In the second grade in High school the physics lessons turned interesting when I for the first time tried my skills in practice. I had decided to build an electric motor. I bought all components separately and put them together in our garage. The excitement was great when I turned the switch for the first time – nothing happened, but I did not give up. After a few adjustments I tried again. The situation was comparable to the acceleration of a steam train. It starts slowly and heavily but the more speed it gets, the more effortless it seems to run. In a few seconds the coil was spinning at full speed. The sound was music to my ears. The copperplates scratched against each other, small sparks were created when in a fraction of a second the comutator shorted the power supply. The feeling was great. I had created something, a machine that worked, I had turned electrical energy into mechanical energy. This was a feeling I wanted to experience many times again. My interest in creating does not only include technology. Aesthetics, functionality and practicality are likewise things that I pay great attention to in developing products. Allready in the beginning of my studies at Helsinki University of Technology, I knew that I wanted to integrate art in my studies. My interest in design had woken up through my drawing hobby. As years went by, my interest has grown and after completing my minor subject at University of Art and Design Helsinki (UIAH) I was through the application process accepted as a degree student at UIAH’s industrial design program. I had found my place. A combination of technology and art was perfect for me. I see both of the fields as equally important. Simplified I see it like this; the technology studies give me knowledge, the design studies gives me skills to use this knowledge in a creative way.

6-2014 Can boating be more effortless? The 52° N concept proposes a different way of conquering the seas by combining two existing hull designs in a new way to create a smoother, more comfortable ride while retaining the thrill of boating. The hydrofoil provides sideway stability and suspension whilst the narrow displacement hull provides back and forth stability and a natural platform for propulsion. The combination of these two hulls not only smooths out the ride, enabling a greater focus on navigation, control and comfort, but it also proposes an exciting new architecture for boat design. The idea with this project was to create a concept that expands on boating usability and experience to in turn appeal to a greater user base that might not have taken to the seas before. The focus was on the actual driving scenario and the goal was to solve usability issues by keeping the experience extreme. This new extreme freedom should appeal to both experienced boaters and beginners.

Fiat flex interior 1-2013 For many youngsters, earning your own money means freedom. But still without an education and lack of time, earning a little extra is not always an easy task. The Fiat flex concept is a car that serves as a platform for creating your own little business. It is a service that involves the car manufacturer and companies that are signed up for the program, companies that can provide easy tasks for the youngsters. A car enables you to do so much more. It enables you to transport people, goods and yourself. Companies that sign up for the program and in that way get affordable labour, are supporting the car manufacturer to produce affordable cars. The project was done as a group project with three group members. Jannis Carrius was responsible for the exterior designs, Gemma Wagget for the materials and me myself for the interior design. The idea with the interior was to create something flexible that suits as many purposes as possible still being appealing to the demanding youngsters taste. The seats are therefore made out of a multi usage element that you can turn into a bag or a hammock if you like. The dashboard is a big touch screen computer on which you can manage your business’ “paperwork” on.

Back to basics 1-2014 The concept of the car is old. The first cars were horse carriages with engines fitted on. Although the cars look very different today, the main concept is still the same; the car body with four wheels and an engine . The shape of the car has changed over time, moving from the carriage like style all the way to a modern mono body car. It has been refined and improved, a great heritage exists in the product. The development continues still. As vehicle design students, we are urged to find new interesting shapes, find the shapes of tomorrow. Sometimes the focus however moves away from the main concept of the car, targeting only the surfacing of the car body. For me a car is a product like any other product where the main concept is most essential. The best products are the ones that are honest, everything has a reason. Every line, shape, material, function exists for a reason.

Greater awareness 1-2013 This project is all about light and safety. Making the car more noticeable in traffic, still not making it a distracting lightshow, you could avoid accidents. Higher speed, higher acceleration means more light. The light moves around the car accordingly to g-forces which makes it possible for a bystander to predict the car’s behaviour. The awareness theme does not only include the exterior. The light strips can be seen from the inside as well. Here they indicate the outside movement, warns if something is closing in potentially crossing your path. The idea around the concept was a result of a group project, the design is my own.

Electric formula racer

5-2013 What advantages does an electric race car have over a traditional combustion powered one? This is what we’re urged to find out in the Drayson racing project where the goal is to design car concepts for the new electric formula class. Aerodynamics is a hot topic in the racing world and with looser constrains than we have in petrol powered car design we can stretch the boundaries even further. I am looking at structures of airplanes. They are stiff, light and have a low drag. Features I would like to bring into my design.

1-2013 The delivery vehicle operates in the busy city centre where traditional vans are too big and clumsy. The cargo space is in the front and the driver stands in the back. An upright standing posture makes it possible to have a higher and shorter vehicle. The back wheel is a free turning sphere and the front ones have their own electrical engines integrated in the wheel mechanism. You turn by adjusting the speed of the front wheels. In this way, a separate steering mechanism is not needed and the manoeuvrability is very good. You can turn the vehicle on the spot. The cargo capsule is exchangeable, which makes it possible to build up a more flexible delivery system. For instance, a truck could bring ready packed capsules in to the city centre where Express it-units deliver the parcels to their final destination. The frame also fits a standard euro palette.

Tender 52 9 - 2013 The aim with this project was to create a 52 foot tender on a given hull with a cabin that you can close. A closed cabin does not only protect you from wind and water, it also enables heating. The roof slides forward, tilts down and meets the windshield that slides backwards and tilts up. Fabric slide doors cover the back and side openings. This project was done for a Swedish client.

Starting point

5-2010 Autopilot-service is a future public transportation concept designed for Helsinki city center. Many people find public transportation unattractive and prefer private motoring. The problem lies in the inflexibility and inconvenience of traveling with public transportation. The Autopilot service combines the advantages of public transportation and private motoring. The service consists of a squad of fully automatic driverless vehicles. They use the same roads as cars. With the help of magnetic sensors they follow an electric wire that is embedded into the road. This technology (for example used in factories by automatic trucks) will make sure that the vehicle stays on track.

When you need a ride, you just send a text message of the address of your destination to the Autopilot service. The nearest vehicle will pick you up and drive you to your destination. It gets information about the starting point by localizing your cell phone and a text message with an address along the wire where the vehicle will pick you up will be sent back to you. This message also includes a code which is used for accessing the vehicle. The range of the service would be downtown Helsinki. The Autopilot Service would replace a major part of the tram-, bus-, subway- and car traffic in Helsinki. The amount of Autopilot vehicles in the city centre would be a few hundred. Aluminum frame

The vehicle is fully automatic and elctric powered. It follows the wire that is embedded into the road with the help of a magnetic sensor that is placed in the front of the vehicle. A radar senses the surrounding traffic. In this way the vehicle reacts quickly if something gets in its way. The vehicle is programmed to be able to pass other vehicles. This is necessary when vehicles are picking up or leaving customers. Navigation is made possible by GPStechnology.

The folds of the chair are of two separate types. Both ways include cutting but from different sides. Most of the folds are made by removing a slice of the liner (the outer layer of the board) on the inside of the fold. The fold of the backrest is cut from the outside by cutting through everything else except the liner on the inside.

smart toothbrush A project by Alexander Brink & Vilma Issakainen 12-2009 The manufacturing of simple electronic components is so cheap nowadays that it is possible to integrate electronic into very cheap products. This toothbrush would not cost much more than an ordinary one although it has some special features. This toothbrush warns you if you’re brushing too roughly and tells you when you’ve brushed long enough.

The neck of the toothbrush will light up when you Are pressing too hard against your teeth

The toothbrush does not have to be switched on. The charge censor starts the timing automatically which measures brushing time. The led light in the tip of the handle lights up when you have brushed in three minutes. If you’re brushing to roughly the stretch strip on the printed circuit board in the neck censors it and the led light in the neck lights up until the bending angle of the neck returns to allowed values. The toothbrush gets the energy for the electronics from a piezo strip in neck that produces energy when the neck bends. A small condensator stores the energy. When manufactured, the electronic componenents are placed in the mold before the plastic is pressed into it.

Semi displacement shapes 1-2014 With growing fuel costs and greater environmental concerns, the demand on yachts consuming less energy is emerging. This conpet is a proposal of a semidisplasment boat with an attempt to remain the appeleang aesthethics of a fast boat. The aim was not to make “fast” shapes on a slower boat, but to prove that a slower boat can be cool by still being honest to it’s nature.
