EDDIE HOWE This afternoon we welcome Dick Advocaat and his Sunderland squad to Vitality Stadium. Dick did a fantastic job when he joined Sunderland last season and kept them in the Premier League. We also welcome Jermain Defoe and John O’Shea back to the club today and remember the impacts both players had during their respective loan spells all those years ago. Our last home match before the international break against Leicester ended up being a difficult afternoon. In a short space of time we lost Charlie Daniels, Tyrone Mings and Max Gradel, with the latter two sustaining serious, long-term knee injuries. Our thoughts are with both Tyrone and Max, who have been operated on and now start the journey back to full fitness. We will support both players and look forward to their return.
Last Saturday we were disappointed with the result against Norwich. Our performances have been consistently high so far this season, so it was a reminder of what happens in this league when we drop below those high standards. One hallmark of our squad over recent seasons has been their collective ability to respond to setbacks. So when results go against us, we work even harder in training and try to respond in the right way. With your incredible support we will do everything possible to continue this.
With only a small amount of time left before the transfer window closed, we were delighted to add both Glenn Murray and Joe Bennett to the squad. Glenn is someone we’ve admired for a long time and he brings Premier League experience and an excellent goal scoring record, while Joe provides another quality attacking full back to our ranks.

JEFF MOSTYN I would like to extend a very warm welcome to the directors, players, staff and supporters from Sunderland, our visitors this afternoon. The latest ground improvements are now in place and you will have an opportunity this afternoon to see the permanent television studio and our new state of the art LED floodlights. In comparison to our previous lights there is every possibility the new lights can be seen from space! Lets all hope they shine favourably on the team this season.
This is the first contest between the clubs since the Division Two match in 1990. Our last home game against Leicester City now seems a distant memory with an international break and an away fixture away at Norwich in between, so it is great to be back at Vitality Stadium for this afternoon’s match. May I take this opportunity on behalf of everyone associated with the club to wish Tyrone Mings and Maxi Gradel a full and speedy recovery following their horrendous injuries in our last home match. Following the closure of the transfer window, I would also like to take time to wish all of our new players every success at the club. We are delighted to have you on board and wish you all every success in our quest for an accomplished debut season in the Premier League. Our gratitude of course goes to our owner Maxim Demin for his incredible support backing Eddie Howe throughout the transfer window. I am asked frequently how difficult is it attracting players to the club and completing a deal. With the club’s footballing philosophy, Eddie Howe’s leadership and our envious location, attracting players is easier than closing a deal, as proved to be the case on the final day. You would only have to ask Richard Hughes, Neill Blake, Eddie and Jason and they will testify to just how stressful and time consuming the whole process is.
The Premier League has once again proved that no team can take any opponent for granted, with five games completed every matchday has produced surprises and we know from our own opening games that unless you are at your very best it is difficult to get positive results. Today will be no exception; I know that the boys will show great character this afternoon and, with your incredible support, turn in the kind of display we are all used to seeing. Please get behind the boys from start to finish. Enjoy the game. Kindest regards,

TOMMY ELPHICK Good afternoon and welcome to Vitality Stadium for the visit of Sunderland. It is good to be back at home after a disappointing return from the international break. After analysing the game at Norwich as a group last week, we were all of the same opinion that the performance of the whole team was very, very flat compared to our usual high standards and we can’t wait for today’s game to put that right and hopefully get a positive result.
could be a real force in this league and our early season form highlighted that. The past five games have been examples of how we are going to have to deal with the highs and the set backs in this league - we have to stay mentally strong as a group and remain focused together to achieve what we all want to this season. It’s easy to get lost in the hype when you win and even easier to lose confidence when you don’t get the results or performances quite expected, but we have managed these situations well in the past and have to remain constant throughout the season, always wanting to work hard and get better no matter what.
It was good for the group to see Glenn Murray and Joe Bennett added to the squad on deadline day and they have both settled in really well - hopefully they will both enjoy success with us this season. Having played with Muzzer before and against Joe last season they will both bring lots of quality to the team. A lot is being made of the fact that this is a must win game for us with Sunderland being below us, and of course we want to maintain and even extend that gap, but this is one of 33 games left and it’s still very early in the season with plenty of points to play for. Sunderland have a lot of talent and proven players at Premier League level that we will need to pay respect to, but as always we have to stamp ourselves on the game and the major factor from last week will be getting back to our high tempo with and without the ball right from the start and you fans will play a big part in this.
The response has definitely been there on the training ground this week and now it is time to transfer what we have practiced this week onto match day and get back to the high tempo and energy style which will hopefully bring a classic Bournemouth performance to the front. Enjoy the game.
When we hit those high standards that we’ve become accustomed to we feel we

SUNDERLAND
By Richard Jones
Boosted by Dick Advocaat’s decision to continue as manager and a generous transfer fund, Sunderland will be aiming higher this year. Last season, in the club’s eighth consecutive campaign in the top-flight, fans were left to sweat as the Black Cats left it late to retain their Barclays Premier League place. The arrival of experienced former Rangers manager Dick Advocaat in March vastly improved Sunderland’s fortunes, after inspiring a strong finish to the season.
12 points in the final eight games, including victory over local rivals Newcastle United meant Sunderland secured safety with one game to spare. The 67-year-old originally turned down a contract extension this summer, but persistence by the club’s chiefs and a healthy transfer fund soon swayed Advocaat. The Dutchman wasted Page 14
no time, with eight sound squad additions to ensure Sunderland will be aiming higher than relegation this season. A slow start may have frustrated fans, but once the highly-rated additions, who include Jeremain Lens, Fabio Borini and Younes Kaboul gel within the team, expect good things from Sunderland.

QUINN DEFENDS SUNDERLAND PROGRESS
American defender DeAndre Yedlin has signed for Sunderland on a seasonlong loan deal from Tottenham Hotspur, after the deal for Nicolas Lombaerts reportedly fell through due to the Zenit St Petersburg defender failing his medical. The 22-year-old right-back became the second Spurs player to join the Black Cats this summer, after fellow defender Younes Kaboul signed permanently in July. Yedlin arrived at the Stadium of Light following his appearance in the USA’s friendly match defeat to a strong Brazil side.
Sunderland have strengthened their strikeforce with the addition of Fabio Borini from Liverpool on a four-year deal. The Black Cats fought off competition from Inter Milan, Fiorentina and Watford for the Italian striker’s signature. Borini originally turned down a permanent deal with Sunderland after a successful loan spell two seasons ago in which he scored seven goals in 32 appearances.
Sunderland legend Niall Quinn has leapt to the defence of the club’s owner Ellis Short. “I think it’s very unfair,” he said. “I think he came in at a critical time in the club’s history. This man came in a stranger to the area, and he’s put more than just a pile of money into it, he’s put his heart and soul into it at times.” n

MAKING CONNECTIONS
with Mark Mitchener
The teenager who hit 10 in a row Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe can expect a warm reception today – nearly 15 years after he first hit the national headlines wearing the red and black of Bournemouth. He came here on loan from West Ham aged 18, lodged with his ex-Charlton youth team-mate Jason Tindall and instantly made his name by scoring in each of his first 10 league games, sending the media scrambling for their record books after he made it 12 in 10 in a 2-0 win at Cambridge in January 2001. With Defoe T-shirts being sold in aid of the Cherries’ new stadium appeal fund (the man himself even revealed one under his Bournemouth shirt after scoring in one game), England’s hottest teenage prospect spent the rest of the season at Dean Court in a very effective combination with his strike partner (and
on-pitch bodyguard) Steve Fletcher, eventually finishing with 18 league goals from 27 starts, his best league goalto-game ratio at any of his clubs, as Sean O’Driscoll’s side narrowly missed the play-offs. The Premier League beckoned as Defoe spent the next few years banging in the goals for West Ham, having two spells at Tottenham either side of a year at Portsmouth, and briefly joining Major League Soccer side Toronto
Page 20
FC before returning to the UK with Sunderland in January. Internationally, he has scored 19 times for England in 21 starts and 34 substitute appearances, including a goal against Slovenia at the 2010 World Cup and a hat-trick against Bulgaria later that year. But to Bournemouth fans, the chant “We’ve got Jermain Defoe – he scored 10 in a row” will always remind them of their one-season teenage hero.
Cherries loanee to Sunderland's Wembley skipper
A year earlier, Bournemouth were graced by another future Premier League regular. Manager Mel Machin’s friendship with Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson had proved fruitful, both in terms of pre-season friendly visits and loan players. But while striker Graeme Tomlinson somehow injured his back sleeping on a waterbed, and midfielder Paul Teather’s loan spell was cut short by a fractured cheekbone, future Sunderland captain John O’Shea had a much more successful stay here. O’Shea made his United debut in the League Cup in October 1999. Three months later, the teenage centre-back joined Bournemouth on loan, making his league debut in a 3-1 defeat at Colchester. He partnered Ian Cox and then Eddie Howe at the back during his two months on loan at Bournemouth, making 10 league appearances and scoring in a 3-1 defeat at Millwall.
He spent part of 2000-01 on loan at United’s regular “nursery” club Royal Antwerp, his Republic of Ireland debut followed that summer, and he finally broke into United’s first team in late 2001. His versatility saw him deployed in several positions in the next few years – even including a seven-minute cameo as an emergency goalkeeper. In a medal-laden Old Trafford career, O’Shea won the Premier League five times, the FA Cup once, played in two winning League Cup final sides and was an unused substitute as United won the Champions League final in 2008. But after nearly 400 first-team games, he moved to Sunderland in 2011, and captained them in another Wembley showpiece when they lost the 2014 League Cup final to Manchester City. Waterford-born O’Shea has also won more than 100 caps for his country, playing in all three of the Republic’s games at Euro 2012.
In reserve for Cherries and Black Cats
Drogheda-born goalkeeper Nick Colgan who spent a year at each club, a decade apart, but had similar experiences at both clubs. The Cherries signed two keepers in the summer of 1998 – Colgan from Chelsea, where he had been loaned out to five clubs in six years, and the late Mark Ovendale from Barry Town. The pair competed for the number one jersey in pre-season, with Ovendale getting the nod – and he maintained form and fitness throughout that season, remaining ever-present as Colgan had to be content with “sub not used” appearances in cup competitions where five substitutes were permitted, rather than the three allowed in the league. Leaving Dean Court in the summer of 1999, Colgan found first-team football over the next decade, chiefly at Hibernian and Barnsley, also featuring for the Republic of Ireland. He was Barnsley’s hero in the 2006 play-off final, saving a penalty to ensure promotion to the Championship. Colgan returned to the Premier League in 2008 by joining Sunderland – but as at Bournemouth 10 years previously, he sat on the bench a number of times but failed to make a firstteam appearance and left at the end of the season. After a spell with Grimsby, the final club of his playing career was Huddersfield, where he remains as goalkeeping coach. n

SHIRT TALES Matchday’s resident replica kit expert Gareth Davies explains that despite having an unpredictable Premier League stay to date, those inconsistencies haven’t always extended, thankfully, to the confines of Sunderland’s kit cupboard.
SHIRT OVERVIEW
IN THE BEGINNING
Whilst the English national side were becoming nearly men at Euro 96, Sunderland were preparing for life in the top flight. However, as is the case with many newly promoted sides, their maiden campaign was difficult and only lasted a year. The Black Cats bounced back two seasons later thanks to the potent strike force of Kevin Phillips and Niall Quinn. This resulted in consecutive seventh-place finishes whilst wearing a glut of magnificent kits, as made by Asics and the world’s biggest sports brand, Nike.
In March 1995, with relegation into the third tier looming, Peter Reid was appointed as manager of the Mackems. Reid’s remit was simple: avoid relegation. The following year, his side defied expectations and were promoted into the Premier League for the very first time. With a new ground being constructed on the former Monkwearmouth Colliery site, that forthcoming term would also be the last at Sunderland’s famous Roker Park ground.
1996-2015
This conveyor belt of wonderful outfits continued, but on the pitch, by 2004, Sunderland were playing in the newly named Championship and alternated between the top two divisions until Roy Keane led them back into the Premier League during 2007. In the seasons that have followed since, ensembles produced by Umbro and Adidas have always stuck to the clubs traditional red and white striped formula, although this hasn’t resulted in any prolonged periods of success.
HOME 1996-97
Sadly, the Roker Roar’s final crescendo wasn’t enough to save Sunderland from the drop, but this aside, there were positives from a season of firsts and lasts, most notably the playing attire worn by the Black Cats. A wonderfully minimal home shirt was unveiled and used for just one solitary year too, thus giving a unique commemorative feel. The design was simple, as is normally best when striped offerings are concerned, but despite an uncomplicated appearance, it was magnificent nevertheless. The bold neck, Page 24
cuff detail and no superfluous trim saw a real throwback to days gone by; meaning that kit manufacturer Avec gave Roker Park the send off it deserved.
DESIGN DISASTER AWAY 2015-16
MAGIC MOMENT HOME 2013-14
Although Sunderland’s maiden trip to the newly rebuilt Wembley ended in a 3-1 League Cup final defeat to Manchester City., they claimed some notable scalps en-route to a first knock-out showpiece since 1992. Both quarter and semi-final wins over Chelsea and Manchester United respectively came with Gustavo Poyet’s team wearing that season’s home shirt, made by Adidas.
When a shirt like this is revealed, supporter opinion is understandably polarised. Either you love it because of the individuality shown, in this instance because of the colours used, or you hate it, well... because of the same reason! Now you may think that sounds a bit peculiar but read it again, look at the visiting team’s ensemble and you’ll see what I’m getting at. Unsurprisingly, I’m firmly within the category that loathes creations like these. Those that view it positively will say this demonstrates kit designers still do know what the word contemporary means, but surely something like Sunderland’s original colours of blue and black would have been better suited to such a design? There’s always next year Adidas.
MODERN ICON HOME 1999-00
It’s one of the kit world’s great mysteries. Why didn’t more than just a handful of clubs use Asics to produce their apparel during the ‘90s? It puzzles many replica enthusiasts greatly, as their time in association with Sunderland is a stand out example of just how good they were. Whilst the first post Roker Park shirts were innovative, Asics’ second set were the exact opposite. The away top was brilliant as it encompassed home colours in the shape of a chest band over navy, but the home offering raised an already high bar even further. Containing exemplary facets like a retro collar and subtle black cat on one sleeve; even local sponsors Reg Vardy made it feel utterly magnificent. n
Whilst no real fault could be found with the main design, the German’s second primary outfit for Sunderland didn’t alter much from their first, a real problem when clubs use a unique arrangement like stripes, change kits every season, but employ an off the peg template, something which is likely to continue with Adidas in charge of the Mackems’ kit productions until 2020.
CREST USED FROM 1991 TO 1997
Mackems are renowned for being fervently traditional, something that’s clearly evident when looking at all the crests that have been used by Sunderland. This particular example paid homage to Wearside’s ship building industry and was showcased on the club’s first ever Premier League kits. Follow Gareth on Twitter @garphied

The diminutive Irishman went right in at the top, coming straight out of school to join Premier League side Everton. But under the strict eye of David Moyes the fairy-tale illusion of life as a footballer was soon snatched away from him. Let go by The Toffees due to his physicality rather than his footballing prowess, 19-year-old O’Kane was suddenly left staring into the abyss. He knew the chilling facts: 98 per cent of academy players who fail to break into Premier League first-teams never complete the return journey. “That was the first time that I saw the other side of the game,” he tells Matchday. “You don’t usually hear the word ‘rejected’ used in football, but that’s what happened. Up until then it had all been easy. You train, you play, everything is great and you have a nice life. “But instead of dwelling on the negative, I threw myself into finding out where my next step would be. I wanted to prove that you don’t need to be 6ft4 plus to play in the Premier League.” Trials came and went for the talented youngster, but treading water in the daunting chasm between
success and failure was never part of his modus operandi. O’Kane soon returned to Derry to seek the support of his family. But life didn’t get any easier back in his homeland. “Reality hit me when I got home,” he explains.
“
You don't usually hear the word rejected used in football, but that's what happened.
”
“I had never considered doing anything outside of football before, but suddenly I needed a means of income to live. So I went to work on my uncle Martin’s building site constructing a new ASDA outlet. “I didn’t begrudge it at the time, it was just what I had to do and I can see the benefit
Page 35
of it now. When the alarm goes off for training I often think back to waking up at 6am to get onto the site. “It gave me a great grounding and an appreciation of money. I now know I can’t just take for granted everything that comes with being a professional footballer.” Income from the site was topped up by a humble £60-a-week contract with semi-professional side Coleraine. It was a far cry from the cosy setup that he had enjoyed at Everton, but it provided O’Kane with a platform to attract possible suitors. Soon a move back to England was on the cards. “John Yems was involved with Torquay United at the time,” he recalls. “And he suggested that the manager there, Paul Buckle, should have me down on trial for a week. “I remember on my first day we had to shovel snow off the pitch before we could train. I was looking around and thinking ‘this isn’t how I remember it in England’. “After just three days there they offered me a six-month contract. It was shorter than I’d hoped for; it felt like I was really just
[ Hardly a fairy tale ]
being given an extended trial. But I had to take it, it was my way back in.” Despite The Gulls suffering back-to-back play off heartache in his opening years, O’Kane soon became a fans’ favourite at Plainmoor. He also earned a place in the 2012 PFA League Two Team of the Year. That particular gong attracted interest from a number of clubs, and the then-22-year-old was eventually brought to AFC Bournemouth by Paul Groves. Things were looking up, but another set-back was waiting just around the corner. Groves departed Dean Court 12 games later. O’Kane was left to prove himself all over again. “The manager change was hugely frustrating,” he explains. “It makes you question where you stand. What happens if the new gaffer doesn’t rate you? I had to be really patient under Eddie [Howe] and show him that I was good enough. I had to wait for my chance. “But once I eventually got into that League One team I felt quite settled. I had signed a three-year contract, so that was an opportunity for me to put some roots
down here. I remember buying a house and thinking that things finally felt like they were coming together.” Having taken his chance to impress, O’Kane enjoyed a regular starting slot alongside Harry Arter as the Cherries marched to promotion in League One.
“
I had never considered doing anything outside of football before, but suddenly I needed a means of income to live.
”
The next step seemed just as simple, the Irishman took to the Championship like a duck to water. But his second year was to be somewhat different. Andrew Surman’s deadline-day arrival and an ill-fated ankle injury forced him to watch the majority of the club’s
Page 36
historic Championshipwinning season from the sidelines. The memory of which drives him forward to this day. “As a footballer you want to train in the week and play on Saturday. Every week,” he starts. “So last season was tough for me. The lads went on a 19-game unbeaten run, so it’s impossible to knock on the gaffer’s door and ask for a chance. You don’t really have the right. “Then when I finally started to get a foot in the door there was the injury against Watford. That was a massive kick in the teeth. You put in all the work to be ready and then it’s taken away from you so quickly. “But I use that frustration from last year to put an extra spring in my step. Coming into this season I was so ready to play and thankfully I got my chance against Liverpool on the Monday night.” O’Kane’s starting berth at Anfield meant more than just a debut in the top flight of English football. It was a vindication of what he had believed six years earlier: he could play in the Premier League, and, more importantly, he would. Though the competitor

in him won’t allow it to be recalled with too much misty-eyed romanticism. “As a Liverpool fan growing up, Anfield was always the one ground that I wanted to play at,” he explains. “It took a lot of sacrifice over a number of years to get to that point. It’s the stuff that a lot of fans don’t see. It’s about how you live your life away from the pitch. The small things that most people take for granted. “Of course it was a nice way to make my full Premier League debut - I couldn’t have picked anywhere better. But it will always be bittersweet for me, because we didn’t get the result.”
“
I use that frustration from last year to put an extra spring in my step.
”
Now with a growing Premier League pedigree and having enjoyed his first international call-up, one might suggest that O’Kane has finally left his troughs behind him. It’s surely a safe and steady incline from here on in? He, however, sees things differently.
Page 41
“We’re on a level at the moment, about midway,” he says sincerely. “I didn’t have the best of games last Saturday against Norwich and I am annoyed with myself. I didn’t play anywhere near the level I know I can achieve.” And then a pause to stop, and a shift in tone. “But it’s nothing too dramatic,” he continues. “Just another moment that I have to pick myself up from and get on with.” n

CLUB NEWS KERMORGANT SIGNS A NEW CONTRACT AT AFC BOURNEMOUTH Yann Kermorgant has signed a contract extension which will see him stay with the Cherries until the summer of 2017. With the transfer window closed, the club moved quickly to secure the services of Kermorgant, who was part of the 25-man squad submitted to the Premier League earlier this month. “I am really pleased with the new contract,” Kermorgant told Cherries Player HD. “I want to end my career at Bournemouth if I can, so having the opportunity to stay here for the next two years is the best feeling for me. “A lot has changed since I joined the club. There are still things to
improve on, but we are going in the right direction.
Championship as the Cherries set a record-high finish of tenth.
“I haven’t played a big role in the Premier League yet, but I know I will do. If I am not playing I will always be pushing hard to get in the team and to push the other players around me.”
The 33-year-old then underlined his value to the side with crucial goals against Middlesbrough and Brighton & Hove Albion on his way to collecting a winner’s medal last season.
The striker has made a significant impact since his arrival from Charlton Athletic in January 2014, and become a firm fans’ favourite in the process.
Kermorgant, who opened his account for the campaign in the Capital One Cup tie at Hartlepool United, made his Barclays Premier League debut against Aston Villa on the opening weekend of the season.
He added a new dimension to Eddie Howe’s team on the club’s return to the Sky Bet
WARD JOINS HUDDERSFIELD TOWN ON LOAN
CORNICK EXTENDS LOAN AT YEOVIL TOWN FOR A FURTHER MONTH
Elliott Ward has signed a 28-day loan deal with Sky Bet Championship side Huddersfield Town.
AFC Bournemouth’s Harry Cornick has extended his stay with Yeovil Town for a further month.
Ward overcame injury problems to become a regular member of the matchday squad during last season’s run-in, and added a winner’s medal to his collection following promotions with West Ham United and Norwich City.
Cornick joined the Sky Bet League Two side at the start of the season and made an instant impression with a goal on his Football League debut.
“I have spoken to Chris Powell and it’s a good opportunity for all of us; he said that they needed a centre-half and I need to play games so it’s a good fit,” Ward told htafc.com.
Last season’s under-21s player of the year, who is currently at Huish Park with Cherries team-mate Josh Wakefield, also made an appearance in the Glovers’ Capital One Cup tie against Queens Park Rangers. n
“Pre-season has gone very well, I haven’t missed a minute of training and I feel really strong and fit. I am more than ready to play straight away.”

PROGRAMMES FROM THE PAST
by Gareth Davies
Injury hit Bournemouth were dragged closer towards a Division Two relegation battle as Harry Redknapp’s beleaguered squad suffered another demoralising home defeat at the hands of Sunderland.
SATURDAY 17TH MARCH 1990 - BARCLAYS LEAGUE DIVISION TWO
AFC BOURNEMOUTH 0 SUNDERLAND 1 When Luther Blissett scored all three goals to defeat Ipswich at home in mid January, Bournemouth sat exactly halfway up the Division Two table. Like the previous season, there was talk from the South Stand regulars of another play-off push. However, fast forward to four days before the official start of spring and the mood around Dean Court had changed, dramatically, to one which saw those same supporters now muttering a word that seemed inconceivable just two months earlier: relegation. Despite fears of the drop growing, only four places and six points separated Bournemouth and Denis Smith’s Sunderland, who made the long trip south desperate to get their season back on track after a wretched sequence of results that had yielded just one maximum league haul in 1990. Their main reason for this loss of form, similar to Bournemouth’s, stemmed from one thing, a lack of goals from their striking talisman. Early season wins had seen Sunderland marked down as promotion contenders with Marco Gabbiadini free scoring and into double figures before Christmas, but like his
Cherries counterpart Blissett, when the goals dried up, so did Sunderland’s results. There were signs however that a corner may have been turned when the previous week, Gabbiadini did find the target in a 2-2 draw with Leicester. Ominous signs for Bournemouth and their manager Harry Redknapp continued as the former York striker had already netted in the reverse fixture at Roker Park, a game which the home side won 3-2. A lack of goals was obviously a concern for Redknapp, but equally disconcerting was how his players tasked with keeping them out at the other end, had been spending more time in John Dickens’ treatment room than actually out on the pitch. The latest and arguably most devastating casualty was Shaun Teale, one of many bargain buys from the Cherries wheeler dealer extraordinaire, out for the season with damaged knee ligaments. This meant untried utility player Denny Mundee would continue at right back, with Kevin Bond moving to partner Paul Miller in the centre of defence. The new look home backline took to the field in front
Page 48
of 6,328 supporters, with a healthy following from the north-east present. Sadly both the Cherries failings came to roost in a drab game as visiting stopper Tony Norman had a relatively quiet afternoon, whilst counterpart Gerry Peyton was by far the busier as Gabbiadini’s prowess returned and he registered the game’s solitary goal. It was another worrying setback for Redknapp’s team who had yet again demonstrated how woefully out of form they were in the attacking third and dreadfully short of numbers in defence too. Ultimately these factors would cost Bournemouth their place in the division come the final standings, whilst Sunderland were promoted to Division One after Swindon were denied a top flight place due to a string of financial misdemeanours.
GOALS GALORE FOR GABBIADINI Not only did Marco Gabbiadini score in both league encounters with Bournemouth during the 1989/90 season, he also found the target in two Littlewoods Cup games against the Cherries also. A third round match at Roker Park saw the sides finish all square with Peter Shearer’s late leveller meaning a Dean Court replay.
As in the league game that was played the following March, Gabbiadini was the difference between the teams as Sunderland prevailed and they would go onto round five before losing at Coventry.
DEADLINE DAY DEPARTURE FOR MOULDEN As Bournemouth looked on with envy at teams like Sunderland and how they seemed, in the latter part of the season, to make scoring look easy, it was a curious decision by Harry Redknapp to let a striker depart just prior to transfer deadline day in March.
Paul Moulden, a player forever associated with an outrageous chipped goal against Newcastle, was sold to Oldham and was never replaced, thus meaning an already depleted squad further relied on loan signings and untried youngsters to avoid relegation.
REDKNAPP MAKES FULL DEBUT IN HAMMERS LOSS With numbers so thin on the ground, Harry Redknapp was forced, a little earlier than he had perhaps expected, to give his 16-year-old son Jamie a full debut in a must-win match at West Ham. The intimidating Upton Park atmosphere didn’t overawe the manager’s son despite a 4-1 thumping for his side.
Page 49
Jamie would continue to feature regularly in his father’s squad post relegation, turning in a number of eye-catching displays before being sold to Liverpool in January 1991 for £350,000. n

MAKING THE GRADE Matchday spends Monday morning with the under-21 squad to talk training, loans and new languages. WORDS: ALEX SMITH IMAGERY:: AMY MAIDMENT
Page 77
[ Making the grade ]
It’s just before 9am when the first members of the under-21 squad arrive at the Hamworthy Club on Monday morning.
The chances are none of them had heard of Iheanacho a few days earlier, but they know who he is now.
Goalkeeper Pat O’Flaherty and midfielder Ben Whitfield take a seat at a table, with Jordan Lee soon joining them.
The City midfielder is promising, talented and, most importantly, just like them – a youngster at a Premier League club.
It’s not long until all 14 players, including trialists Alessandro Cannataro and Jeremi Kimmakon, who will train around an hour and a half later, are all gathered round. Having trained on Saturday morning and enjoyed the following day off, they have plenty to catch up on and talk soon turns to the weekend’s events. Jonathan Muleba and Callum Buckley review Anthony Joshua’s latest fight, Sam Matthews discusses Ian Wright’s analysis of Theo Walcott’s finishing on Match of the Day and Jake McCarthy brings up Kelechi Iheanacho’s winner for Manchester City at Crystal Palace.
“We were told at the start of the season that promotion has changed things for us,” Matthews tells Matchday.
“
We're eligible to play all through the season and there is always that possibility.
”
Football is a game of ups and downs though, meaning life for a young pro at a top club isn’t always as glamorous as it sounds. At times, there are doubts and frustrations,
Page 79
but, as Iheanacho proved, there is always hope of the life changing opportunity to perform in the world’s most watched competition.
“The squad is finalised after the transfer window closes until January, which could benefit us. “No one likes to see players get injured but it happens. If that’s the case, the club can’t go out and bring someone in on loan. “We’re eligible to play all through the season and there is always that possibility. If that doesn’t happen though, we are still in a good place here. It’s about developing and progressing and seeing where it takes you.” It’s now 9.45am and the group is divided to take part in a prehab session taken by sports therapist Chris Jenkins. These sessions are put on as part of their injury prevention work.
Page 80
[ Making the grade ]
After a few minutes, the second group make their way downstairs and run through the same exercises on the squash court. It isn’t a state of the art or purpose built facility, but the court is more than adequate. The players and staff get on with it, making the most of what’s around them. Preparation complete, the squad then head back down Magna Road to train on the club’s academy pitches at Canford Arena. There they find coach Stephen Purches and sports scientist Phil Keehne, who have been busy laying out mannequins, cones, bibs and balls ahead of the players’ arrival. Having played alongside Eddie Howe and Jason Tindall, Purches understands their philosophy inside and out, but he also has access to each session they take with the first team squad. Their drills are recorded and stored to be reviewed by Howe, his staff and players, also providing inspiration for the next session for the under-21s. “When I’m back at the stadium I will watch what the first team did that morning and speak to the gaffer, Jason and Tinners (Simon Weatherstone),” he says. “You have to make changes because of the numbers, but it helps me give the players the best opportunity to be prepared if they train with the first team.” Meanwhile, Brandon Goodship is completing the latest step in his recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament injury over on the far side of the pitch. He’s been out
for 14 months, had his setbacks but now feels much more positive and stronger following an encouraging few weeks back out on the grass. An hour long session is enough for him at this stage and he heads back to the changing rooms, where he reflects on how the under-21 set-up has evolved since it began in the summer of 2012.
“
Hopefully Matt Butcher making his debut goes to show what we are doing here is right.
”
It was perhaps one of his closest friends, and new housemate, Baily Cargill who changed how it was perceived from those on the outside and the players within the squad. Named as the club’s first under-21s squad player of the season in 2014, Cargill went on to enjoy a breakthrough year, complete with a first team debut and England under-20s call-up. “Baily’s a great example,” Goodship says. “He came through the youth team, made the step up and is now part of the first team. Page 81
“He’s shown what can be done and that it is achievable if you put the work in. Getting the call-up from England was amazing and he should be really proud of what he has achieved so far. I’m sure he’s only got more good things ahead of him.” Goodship’s team-mates still have work to do and move on to a small sided game, with Purches pulling on a fluorescent green bib to join one team and even up the numbers. A little past 12.15pm and the session comes to an end. Without exception, all the players help collect the bibs, gather the balls and load up the van which is used to transport their equipment. “The players all have jobs and they wash their own kit,” Jenkins explains. “We make sure they chip in and it’s not a case of setting up training and then they leave once we’re done. It’s important they know about their responsibilities. “It’s something that starts in the youth team, where they have more jobs and if they make it to the first team, then they don’t have any. But for now they all chip in and even helping find all the balls at the end of training is important.” Monday is one of the two allocated gym sessions for the week and the squad complete their exercises under the guidance of Keehne back at the Hamworthy Club. The next match in their schedule is the Under-21 Premier League Cup tie against the Cherries’ counterparts at Gillingham, but the overall aim is to be prepared for a
[ Making the grade ]
first team match, whether that’s in domestic action or cup competitions. “If the lads are called up, they need to fit straight in and meet the demands of what they’re being asked to do,” Keehne, who gained experience under former Cherries player turned sports scientist Scott Guyett at Crystal Palace, adds. “We need to make sure they’re training at the correct intensity, so if they do step up, they don’t look out of place. “We’ve seen that with Matt Butcher just a few weeks after coming into the under-21s set up. The manager has given him his debut and wants him to train with the first team, which is brilliant to see. “Hopefully it goes to show what we are doing here is right.” Butcher is one of three members who is absent due to training with the first team, with new signings Filippo Costa and Tomas Andrade also involved.
“
They all chip in. Even helping find all the balls at the end of training is important.
”
Between them they represent the latest stage of the evolving under-21s set up – the homegrown talent determined to seize his chance alongside the promising international additions. The 20-man squad is made up of 14 players who have come through the youth team, as well as Harry Cornick who was released from the academy and made his way back via local nonleague side Christchurch. Prospects who grew up in Bournemouth, Southampton, Page 82
Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight are playing with those from Australia, Argentina and Italy. Fortunately, Costa speaks good English, while Andrade has some work to do on his new second language. In the case of trialist Kimmakon, once of Paris Saint Germain, he is able to rely on Muleba, who learnt French through his Congolese parents. “It’s something I was used to at Chelsea,” he explains. “Having a lot of international players there, I helped communicate with some of the French speaking players. “I didn’t expect that when I came here, so it did catch me by surprise. I’m glad Jeremi is here though because if you don’t use a second language you can get rusty. “It’s important because I have been away to play with Congo before and all the others were really fluent, whereas I’m not. I wouldn’t say I felt segregated but it was a bit overwhelming.
GOALKEEPER: PAT O'FLAHERTY
“If you come over and can’t speak the language, it can be tough. I’m just glad I can help out.
Can you explain how you came to the club? I was released when I was 14 and then went away to play for various non-league clubs, such as Winchester and Poole Town. Last pre-season Chad Collins, the goalkeeper at the time, was injured and they needed someone for training.
“I would love to learn Spanish (to help Andrade), but two languages is enough for me at the moment. Maybe I will pick it up if I have time in the future.”
I knew Neil Moss from continuing to go to his goalkeeping school and he dropped me a text. He asked if I could help them out and it went from there. I was at Brockenhurst College at the time and was just happy to be training with the club.
Following lunch the players await their individual reviews, which take place every six weeks under the guidelines set out by the Elite Player Performance Plan.
I stopped that for a month to concentrate on my college work and then one day Purchy phoned my dad for a meeting. He offered me a contract there and then.
They are called into a separate room one by one to go through their technical and physical progress, with the aid of video clips provided by analyst Patrick Montgomery.
How would you describe life as a young goalkeeper at the club? I enjoy it. It can be tough because of the way we play – you need to be good with your feet and your hands. The older goalkeepers are really good with us and it’s a good club to be at. Do you get the chance to work with the first team goalkeepers? The goalkeepers do extra sessions with Mossy three times a week. We get the chance to train with goalkeepers such as Ryan Allsop and learn from them. We have their input too and when Lee Camp was here, he helped me and Jordan (Holmes). They share their experience and show us tricks of the trade.
Close tabs are also kept on Cornick, Josh Wakefield, Josh Carmichael, Jayden Stockley, Mason Walsh, Jack Simpson and Joe Quigley, who are all away on loan.
What is the best advice you have been given? It was probably from Campy. He would always tell me to be aggressive and that’s something I have taken on board.
The subject of loans for young players at Premier League clubs is sometimes Page 83
[ Making the grade ]
a controversial one and an issue Muleba has seen firsthand at former club Chelsea. “It’s no secret that they have 33 players out on loan,” he starts. “Being out on loan at Bournemouth is different – it’s an opportunity to show what you’re about and that you’re ready to step up, rather than getting you out of the way. “If there are loads of players out, you don’t feel any different to anyone else because everyone is doing the same thing. You can become a needle in a haystack and that’s difficult. It’s much more positive here.” Loans at Football League clubs for Cornick, Wakefield and Stockley have certainly encouraged their team-mates and those who have been
in the under-21s squad for longer than others, such as Jake McCarthy, are setting their sights higher than before. “If you see one of the lads
“
You can become a needle in a haystack at a big club. It's much more positive here. get called up to train with the first team or go out on loan, you want them to do well,” he offers.
Page 84
”
“You always send them text messages to wish them good luck, congratulate them or tell they deserve what they’re getting. “Everyone is striving to improve and you want that person to be you, but we are all in this together. “We are a Premier League club now and for the lads looking to get out on loan, we can maybe go to a Conference or League Two club, maybe even one in League One. “One good loan spell and you can get your name out there. Play well in front of the right people and you never know what could happen.” With their first Final Third Development League and Under-21 Premier League Cup matches completed, the season is finally underway
for Purches’ squad. It’s difficult to predict what the next eight months will hold for his players, but there are undoubtedly few better opportunities for young players than theirs. “We’ve had to evolve quickly,” he concludes back in the players’ lounge at the training pavilion, which is just a short walk from the office he shares with Montgomery and goalkeeping coach Neil Moss. “The first team have moved on at such a pace and I’m pleased with what we’ve done, but there’s still more we want to do. “The biggest thing we have done is linking the under-21s and first team set up. Anyone who wants to develop here needs to understand how relentless the first team model is and what is expected. “They won’t always have the best game but they should think, ‘I worked hard’. They should always be able to say they worked hard and gave it their best.”
ANALYST: PATRICK MONTGOMERY What are your main responsibilities? My main duties are to analyse training sessions and matches. Along with Purchy, I help to provide feedback to the players on how they have performed. I try to be a connection between the players and Purchy by providing feedback both ways. What do you do after a game? Once we are back at the ground, I use software called Amisco to clip any of the footage which we think is important to share with the players. That could be from a team perspective, such as pressing or shape, but we can also do individual clips. We give the players the option to have their clips emailed to them after the game or they can come to the stadium to watch them back. What is your background and how has it helped you get to where you are now? I was at Crewe’s academy from an early age up until 18. Unfortunately I didn’t quite make it and decided to study sports science at Loughborough University. I kept on playing before I focused on analysis in my final year. Would you change anything you’ve done? I think everyone wants to be a footballer. I’m not the only one though and only a select few make it. If I couldn’t make it as a player, I wanted to make it as analyst or perhaps a coach in the future. Does having played help with your job now? I think so. I’ve been in the players’ positions and can relate to them without saying anything wide of mark. Equally, they know I’ve had similar experience to what they’re having now. n

THE BRITANNIA STADIUM Built only 18 years ago, the Britannia Stadium has an all-seater capacity of up to 27,743 supporters on a match day. Previously Stoke City played all of their competitive matches at the Victoria Ground, and enjoyed a lengthy 119-year residency there from 1878-1997. The Britannia was constructed in just 10 months at a cost of £14.7m, before England and Stoke City legend Sir Stanley Matthews officially
opened it in 1997. After passing away at 80 years old, his ashes were buried under the centre circle. The Potters first game at the Britannia was against Rochdale in the League Cup, which ended in a 1-1 draw. In their first year at the stadium, the club were relegated from the First Division. Page 90
Back in 2008, the Britannia Stadium was crowned the noisiest ground in the Premier League, with an average of 101.8 decibels per game. Coupled with being one of the windiest grounds in the league, a popular phrase ‘but can you do it on a cold rainy night in Stoke?’ has been coined by many a pundit.
OPPONENTS: STOKE CITY KICK-OFF: SATURDAY 26TH SEPTEMBER 2015, 3PM CAPACITY: 27,743 How to get there: Via rail: Stoke-on-Trent station is just over two miles away from the stadium, but there are shuttle busses from the train station. Head down Station Road, turn right down Leek Road and go straight across the A500 dual carriageway onto Glebe Street. Via car: Leave the M6 (Junction 15) and go across the roundabout onto the A500.
POST CODE FOR SAT NAV: ST4 4EG NEAREST TRAIN STATION: STOKE-ON-TRENT COACH TRAVEL SPONSORED BY AFCB.VITALFOOTBALL.CO.UK: THE SUPPORTERS' COACH LEAVES VITALITY STADIUM AT 8AM, WITH PRICES SET AT £38 FOR SEASON TICKET HOLDERS AND £40 FOR NON-SEASON TICKET HOLDERS. Leave the A500 at the slip road and turn right at the roundabout (still A50) and move into the second from left lane (signposted Britannia Stadium). The stadium is on the right. Page 91
Parking: Car parking at the stadium costs £5. Alternatively, Screw Fix Direct site offers an additional 300 spaces, the postcode is ST4 8GR.
Eat and drink: If arriving by train then the Terrace Bar on Leek Road has been designated as an official away fans pub and offers simple pub food. Alternatively there is a Harvester next to the stadium. n

UNDER-21S MONKEY AROUND AT Go APE The squad channelled their inner Tarzan during a team outing to the unique tree-top adventure playground at Moors Valley. Following on from an opening day defeat to AFC Wimbledon, Stephen Purches’ side took on a challenging team-bonding activity to rejuvenate the camp. The players crossed swinging platforms suspended 20feet above the forest floor and headed through the trees on zip-wires all in the name of team building. “We do a lot of these kind of activities throughout the year,” explained event organiser and under-21s sports scientist Phil Keehne. “It’s all about creating a good atmosphere and team mentality. We are always trying to strengthen our team bond, and sometimes it’s best to do that outside of the usual football environment. “Some of the lads were a bit apprehensive about the height of the course at

GoApe, so we wanted to see how they would respond.
“Not only did they all stay in their groups and encourage one another, but they also had a lot of fun. It’s important that they can forget football for a while and just go back to being normal teenagers.”
A number of the under-21 squad are currently out on loan gaining valuable Football League experience. That, however, did not exclude them from coming back to be involved with the team. Page 104
“Harry Cornick and Josh Wakefield were able to make it and the way that they fitted straight back in is testament to our team spirit. “There was also the challenge of the new players who don’t speak much English. But it was great to see the existing lads taking them under their wings. “Obviously the language barrier is a new challenge for the existing players as well. Having to communicate in different ways is a test, and then to take them completely out of their comfort zone, where they have to communicate, really pushes them to work together.” n

Surridge happy after free-scoring start to the season. After contracting glandular fever at the end of last season, striker Sam Surridge has put his bright start to this campaign down to hard work. Having scored six goals in the South West Youth Alliance League, and one for the under21s squad this year, Surridge has made an impressive start. “At the end of last year I contracted glandular fever, so it affected the tail end of the season and the start of this year,” Surridge told Matchday. “It was frustrating for me as the team were playing so well, and I wanted to add a few more goals to my name after such a good season. “It meant that during the off and pre-season I’ve had to work extra hard to come back to the standard expected at

regain the title again this year, he’s hesitant to put any targets on his own season.
“I know I have worked harder than any of the other pre-seasons I’ve had at the club, but I couldn’t really afford to have a break like the rest of the players.
“In terms of the team, our ultimate aim is to win the league; I think it’s the minimum that is expected from us,” he continued.
“The manager and medical team have been careful bringing me back, and put a lot of effort into monitoring my workload in training. I’ve had to miss a few sessions due to fatigue and tiredness, but I’m recovering well.” Whilst Surridge is aware of the youth team’s aim to Page 106
“From a selfish perspective, I want to score goals, but I don’t want to set myself any targets as I feel it adds pressure to my game, but thirty plus would be nice. “I know I’ve had a good start to the season, and I just want to keep level-headed and keep developing as a player as the club progresses.” n

LONG SERVING GEORGE PASSES AWAY AFC Bournemouth is sad to report the loss of a matchday stalwart of many years, George Brown, who sadly passed away recently. Apart from serving in the Parachute Regiment during the Second World War, George spent almost his entire working life at Underwoods Garage but also found time to assist the club on matchdays for around 30 years. He started in the 1970s by working in the counting house and in later years he also manned the ticket office. A real gentleman, he gave great service to the club and was a popular figure with staff and supporters. AFC Bournemouth sends its condolences to Georgeยนs family and friends at this sad time.

[ The journey ]
THE JOURNEY
WITH ANTON ROBINSON Matchday catches up with Anton Robinson to talk about his two and a half years with the Cherries. The club’s situation wasn’t great when I signed, but I knew what I was getting myself into. Although I had offers from teams in comfortable positions in League Two, I believed we could get out of trouble. We were all so emotionally invested in the Great Escape. The pressure was immense and it would keep some of us awake at night thinking about the consequences. I think those experiences defined me as a man. I’m speaking for myself but I think the other lads will agree that coping with those situations and coming out the other side makes you a stronger person. I remember we had a crucial game at Exeter City and when we came back the gates were locked up and there was a winding up order waiting for us. Jeff Mostyn had to pay so that we could get our cars out of the car park. You need people who will make light of the situation. It’s easy to let the off the field problems drag you down, but people like Warren Cummings were good at helping ease the pressure. Eddie and Jason are great at developing players and I’m proof of that. I have so much to thank them for.
Losing in the play-offs was a horrible experience. Hitting the bar with my penalty and then leaving on that note will always stick with me. I can’t change what happened though and I have to be thankful for the good times. Some players go through their whole careers without experiencing some of what we enjoyed in my few years at the club. If most people were in my shoes, they would make the same choice as I did when I left. I was engaged, had a daughter and had to do what was right for my family and my career. I almost came back. There was a deal in place and I wanted to return, only for the fee to become a stumbling block. My only regret was not forcing the move through. There are different ways of doing it, but it’s not in my make up to do that. Perhaps if I had, I could have played a part in what the club have done in the past few years. I have retired from football now and run a property development company. The business is about building and renovating houses to then rent them out.
There were never any politics in the team selection, which suited me. If you trained and played well, you knew you would start next weekend.
It’s hard to meet up with the lads I played with but I stay in touch with them. I speak to Shaun Cooper, Jason Pearce, Rhoys Wiggins, Danny Hollands, Ryan Garry and Michael Symes. Liam Feeney stays with me during the international breaks too.
I thought we were good enough to get promoted in my final season at the club. A lot of the boys were playing in the Championship the following season and we were unlucky to finish in the play-off places.
That shows how close we were. We have all gone our different ways and a lot happens in football in a short space of time, but I don’t think I will experience anything like the togetherness we had.
