Theprojectisknownaspurepresence,andit seenasawaytocaptureadesignstrategy thataimstomakeserene,functionalareas thatareneverthelessstronglyrootedinthe humanexperiencewhichdepictthecultural heritageoftheCubanMambo.
Site Context
Thesiteislocatedonthewaterfront ofDowntownKingstonwithviewsto theoceanandiseasilyaccessibleto thepublic.ItisborderedbytheDigicelfoundationbuildingtotheeast andtheCraftMarkettotheWest.The designapproachistocreateaperformacetheatretopreservetherich culturalhistoryoftheCubanMambo.
Concept Development
Symbiosisisatermdescribingany longtermrelationshipbetweentwo dissimilarorganisms.Intheinstance oftheMambo,thetwoorganismsare thepersonsinolvedinthedance.The CubanMamboisoneofthemost vivaciousofalltheLatindancing styles.Itischaracterizedbystrong hipmovements,rhythimicalbodyaction,quickfootworkanduniquearm wrapsandturns.Thetermmambois alsoknownas“conversationwiththe Gods”wheretheywoulddanceuntil theywereinahypnoticstatewhere theycancommunicate.
DeconstructivistApproach.
Inthemostliteralsense,thedeconstructivistapproachmeansto dismantleortakeapart.Theimplementationofthedeconstructivismwithinthedesigncanbeseenasthefluidmovementsof theCubanMamboarebrokendownintoindependentmasses andthencombiningthesemassesaltogethercreatingdynamic thresholdswherethesemassesintersect.

ThesiteislocatedinDowntownKingston, Jamaica.DowntownKingstonisknown asaculturalMeccaandthehomeof Reggae.ItwasDeclaredasUNESCO cityofmusic.OrangeStreetisknownas beatstreetknownforitsstreetdance andsoundclashcultureaswellasthe originallocationoftheTuffGongStudio foundedbyBobMarley.OnthecontraryKingsStreetstemsfromthecolonialdaysandwasnamedaftertheKing Charles.Thesetwojuxtaposingconcepts iswhatgivesthebuildingit’sfundamentalpurpose.Topreservethecultureof reggaeandthemessageitstandsfor. Combiningmoderndayandfuturistic technologyshowingthejourneytofreedomthroughtheExodusMuseum.
Concept Development
TheinspirationcomesfromtheAfrican adinkrasymbol‘Fawohodie’whichmeans freedom.
Wethenseparatethemasses usingtheconceptoftherigidityof thejudicialsystemvsthefreedom thatreggaegives.
Wethenflipthemassestocreate ajuxtaposedharmony amidstthe differencescreatinganexperience withinthethreshold
