Where To Start With Your Career Goals
Okay, great. So you have a general idea of where you want your career to go. But first, here are a couple suggestions before we put them to paper: .. Make sure your career goals are for YOU. In other words, your career goal shouldn’t be too please someone else, or because you think it looks like fun. It should be something you are passionate about. After all, it is difficult to stay interested in something when it doesn’t drive us. .. Seek out a mentor. This is something I would have profited dearly from early in my own career. It would have saved me a lot of time in trial-and-error. Alright, so let’s get started: 1. Career Goals Setting. Decide precisely what it is you want to achieve, and by when you are going to achieve it. Make sure there is no mistake about what your ultimate career goal is. Don’t write down something like, “I want to be well-off.” What’s well-off? It’s a vague figure that is difficult to pinpoint or put a bulls-eye on. Additionaly, affix a deadline, as it will give you incentive to act. So, let’s say your goal is to become a criminal defense attorney, jot down something along the lines of: “I choose to be a practising criminal defense attorney by the age of 28 years.” The career goal is specific, and it is time-bound. Next! 2. Career Goals Planning. Now that we have our end-point, and a time-frame in mind, it’s time to sort out the posts of the journey! What are the main 3-6 roadposts that you will have to pass? Start backwards, as this can often be easier. Work backwards with the main steps, and then within each add 1-3 smaller steps as well. It can be helpful to write out a list of the things you will need to carry out your career goals. Things like education, specific training, and any other kind of resource you will requre. With these two lists you should now have a list of short term goals, and medium term career goals. Be aware that this plan will almost certainly change as you progress through it. Life changes and so do we with it. Opportunties will come that you didn’t see coming, and challenges you couldn’t have predicted will arise. The key is to be aware of this from the outset. Embrace the fluidity of your career goals plan. Be willing to flexible, but don’t break. 3. Career Goals Execution. By now you should have your career goals written out. Two lists of smaller goals that will take you step-by-step to the ultimate achieviment of your career goal. The next, and most important part – is ACTION. Do not wait for next week to get started. Do not wait for tomorrow, and for goodness sake don’t ever wait for “someday.” Start today. Pick up
