Hip Hop Albums
A Tribe Called Quest – Midnight Marauders • A Tribe Called Quest changed the hip hop game forever with the release of Midnight Marauders (and basically every other piece of music they have released), a concept album based on the program dubbed mighnight marauders, A Tribe Called Quest implemented groovy jazz baselines and an array of abstract sounds to formulate their tone.
Jurassic 5 – Power in Numbers • Power in Numbers by Jurassic 5 may be one the epitomes of hip hop albums. Thumping Jazz bass lines and simplistic rhythms paired with the groups hard politically charged rapping style put Jurassic 5 at the top of 90’s hip hop.
Notorious B.I.G. – Ready to Die • Biggie’s Ready to Die symbolizes the mark of an end of an era of hip hop. After the hip hop album came out, no one stood a chance to make a comparative album of the same fashion. • The era of G rap/ hip hop had died. We will never again see the likes of a rapper as aggressive, real, and powerful as Biggie Smalls. RIP.
Run the Jewels – Run the Jewels 2 • Run the Jewels 2 might be one of the most interesting hip hop albums out right now. The combination of Killer Mike and El-P creates luscious flows and hard thumping beats for listeners to groove to. • Run the Jewels 2 may not be the most typical hip hop album, but the unique sound sets a new bar for other artists to strive for.
Kendrick Lamar – To Pimp a Butterfly • As far as hip hop albums go, King Kendrick took the rap game by storm with the recent release of his To Pimp a Butterfly album. • Kendrick took on a partial neojazz style for his new rap music, invoking past greats for funky bass lines.
Kanye West – The College Dropout • Kanye West might not be a new rapper, but he is definitely one of the best rappers in the game right now. • The College Dropout put Kanye into another stratosphere of rap music. The insane production value of the album may shape the way new rap music is produced in the future. • Kanye took the production of hip hop albums a new direction with skits and other bits and pieces of outros and intros to make a complete feel to a hip hop album.
Joey Bada$$ - B4.DA.$$ • Joey Bada$$ is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with in the rap game. • B4.DA.$$ gave Brooklyn another strong player in the new rap game for 2015 • Joey Bada$$ draws upon classic g-rap styles, with the streets at the heart of the style and the flow, but having a more over all positive vibe on his new rap music.
Big Sean – Dark Sky Paradise • Big Sean appears as another rapper in the game putting out an abundant amount of new rap music into fans airwaves. • Big Sean was discovered by Kanye himself, given a minute to impress the Chicago native, Big Sean didn’t disappoint. • The hip hop album, Dark Sky Paradise, took Sean’s talents to a new height with moving songs like “One Man Can Change the World”.
• Started from the bottom now he’s here, well maybe not the bottom, but Degrassi isn’t far off for a rapper. From roots in teen acting, Drake has made his presence known repeatedly and doesn’t seem to be stopping soon. • I have no idea where he finds the amount of time to make all the songs, while featuring on everyone else’s tracks, but he does. Drake even surprised the world with a spontaneous new hip hop album If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late. • Drake’s latest hip hop album shows how the rap game is evolving and creating a more collaborative environment for all involved.
Drake – If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late 2015’s #1 rapper
