It has been yet another wonderful half term here at Sale Grammar School.Ourstudentssettledintothenewacademicyearswiftlyand continued to demonstrate their commitment to their learning both insideandoutsideoftheclassroom.Thisnewslettercapturessomeof theopportunitiesthatourstudentshavetakenpartinacrossallyear groups,encouragedbybothyouasfamilymembersandenabledby thewonderfulstaffhereatSGS.Thankyouforcontinuingtowork inpartnershipwithus.

Over the course of the last half term we have been focusing on the virtueof'community'andconsideringwhatitmeanstobeanactive member of both our school and our wider school community. We have also explored this virtue in more detail, considering how the decisions which we make have an impact on both ourselves and others within the communities which we are a part of. We will continue to develop this thinking as we move into next half term, focusingonourvirtueof'kindness'.

Towards the start of this half term we were thrilled to be able to shareourOfstedreportwithourwiderschoolcommunity.AsIsaid inmylettertoyou,thewonderfulcommentswhichwerecontained withinthereportarearealtestamenttotheSGScommunityandall that we seek together to achieve. If you haven't had the chance to read the report yet, then may I take this opportunity to encourage youtodothis.

At the start of each school year we work hard to update staff and studentsonoursafeguardingguidanceandprocesses.Thishalfterm, every year group has had a dedicated assembly which has provided themwithareminderofwhatwemeanbysafeguardingandhowto keepeachotherandourselvessafe.Wealsotooktheopportunityto sharewithourstudentsthetrainingwhichourstaffhavehad,sothat they are aware of how seriously we take safeguarding across our schoolcommunity.

The year group assemblies are just one strand of our safeguarding education. These run alongside our planned curriculum activities, suchasviathePersonalDevelopmentFacultyofferin'SkillsforLife' andthroughformtimeandextracurricularactivities.

Asthesafeguardingteamwetalkopenlytoallmembersoftheschool communityaboutthisbeingournumberonepriority.Thetraining wehavedoneispartofbothknowledgeandconfidencebuildingto ensure that everyone in the community feels empowered to share concernsandunderstandswhatthenextstepslooklikewhenthisis necessary. It means that all members of the community can be vigilant, whether that is to support friends, being an upstander rather than a bystander, reporting incidents or supporting where reportsaremade.

Inlinewithourvirtueswehavetalkedopenlyaboutstudentsbeing kind. In safeguarding terms this can mean having difficult conversations with peers and with staff. We have also talked about the challenges around being too curious. Students know how to reportthroughdifferentroutesandwethenaskthemtotrustusto actappropriatelywhenareportismade,andtheimportanceofnot passingonrumoursorgossipthattheymayhear,buttospeaktous aboutit.

Supportingyourchildinschool

Whilstformtutorsarelikelytobethestudentandfamily’sfirstpoints of contact as they play a key role in safeguarding, providing daily wellbeing checks and pastoral care, each Year Group also has its own dedicated lead. The Heads of Progress and Learning oversees attendance,progress,attainment,personalandsocialdevelopment.

We also have a new addition to the Pastoral Team with Mrs Gbenro takingupournewnon-teachingPastoralManagerposition,providing an opportunity for students to have a non teaching staff member to speakto,shouldthisberequired.OurnewStudentServicesManager, MrsPrichardhasalsojoinedourschoolduringthishalftermandshe bringsawealthofexperiencetotherole.

Overthecourseofthecominghalfterm,studentswillbere-introduced tothesupportmechanismswhichareinplacetosupportstudentswith theirmentalhealthandwellbeingandtherewillalsobeopportunities forstudentstotrainaspeer-mentorsandantibullyingambassadors,so dolookoutforinformationaroundthis.Wewillcontinuetoadvertise our online parenting sessions in partnership with The Anna Freud Foundation,andinadditiontothis,thereisalsoanopportunityforall ourparents/carerstomeetourMentalHealthSupportTeamonFriday 11thNovember.Thelinktosignuptothiscanbeseenintheflyer,and wearelookingforwardtoseeingparents/carersatthisevent.

Over the holiday period, please do use the resources on the school website, should these be required, which provide you with some externalagencieswhichcanbeusedtosupportyoungpeoplewiththeir mentalhealthandwellbeing.

CelebratingEuropeanDayofLanguages

On 26th September, Sale Grammar School celebrated the European DayofLanguages. Studentsweretreatedtoaninternationalmenuat lunchtime, activities took place during form time, students got involvedindifferentcompetitionsandtherewaseventhechanceto learnsomeHungarianduringMathslessons!

As part of the week, we also hosted our first 'European Day of Languages Quiz' which was well attended and saw our sixth form team draw with the staff team! Thank you to everyone for taking partandlookoutforanevenbiggerandbettercelebrationnextyear!

Last summer, young people from across the country were asked to "flip" a narrative and tell a story from a different or unusual perspective-a"TwistedTale". Youcanimagineourdelightwhen12 studentsfromourschoolwereselectedtohavetheirstoriespublished. TocelebrateNationalPoetryDay,someofourYear9studentsjoined Youtube poet Mark Grist for a TEAMS workshop aimed at getting them to share their voices in verse. Students participated with enthusiasmandproducedsomewonderfulworkwhichwillbeentered intothePowerofPoetrycompetition.Topicschosenrangedfrom'An odetogravy'to'howtodealwithchallengingmemories'.

WelookforwardtosharingMark'sworkshopandresourceswithour CreativeWritingclubsoverthecomingweeksandtoseewhatother poemsourstudentscancomeupwith.Wewerealsodelightedtohear thatmembersofourschoolcommunityhavealsobeenengaginginthe Manchester Literature Festival, and look forward to hearing more abouttheirexperiencesofthecourseofthecominghalfterm.

PersonalDevelopment

We are very proud of our Personal Development curriculum and the way in which this is sequenced throughout Years7to13.Themajorityofthecurriculumisdeliveredduringthe'SkillsforLife'lessons,andtheseareusually deliveredbyFormTutors,however,asappropriate,wealsoinviteguestspeakersintoschooltosupportthedelivery ofthiscurriculumarea.

Thishalftermwehavewelcomedanumberofsuperbspeakersintoourschoolcommunity.Theirexpertknowledge, skillandunderstandingsupportsourstudentstonavigatechallenginglifesituationsastheygrowintoadulthood.For example,TraffordDomesticAbuseServices,alocalcharitywhoworkinourcommunity,havebeenworkingwithour Year9studentstodeveloptheirunderstandingofhealthyrelationshipsandconsent,buildingontheirunderstanding ofYear8.Overthelasthalfterm,ourYear8studentshavebeensupportedbyTheRAPFoundation.Thisisacharity whoofferworkshopsandpresentationstoempowerstudentsbyeducatingthemontheUKlawsdefiningconsent andpromotingbothdigital&personalsafety.Allworkandpresentationsfromoutsideagenciesisdiscussedwith organisationsinadvancetomakesurethatitisageappropriate.

AsNovemberstarts,wewillberaisingawarenessofMen'sHealthMonthwithinformtime,butthisworkhasalready started with our Year 10 students having a presentation from an external organisation which promotes the importanceofself-examinationandknowingandunderstandingyourownbody.

Careers

Students are provided with a weekly Careers Focus as part of their form time resources, and these alongside other CareersbasedlessonswithintheSkillsforLifeCurriculum,provideourstudentswitharichexperienceofcareers educationfromYears7-13. Inaddition,wehavealsoinvestedinprovidingallstudentswithaccesstoUnifrog,an onlineplatformwhichwewillusewithstudentstohelpthemthinkthroughdifferentcareerpathoptions.

Inadditiontothis,wehavealsowelcomedournewCareersAdvisor,AlisonProudlovetotheschool.Alisonwillbe initiallysupportingouryear11studentsinthinkingmoreaboutfutureaspirationsandwhatthatmeansintermsof nextstepsafterGCSE’s.StudentsinYears10and12havealsohadanassemblyfrom'OurFutures'launchingour WorkExperienceofferandtheyshouldnowbeintheprocessofsecuringaplacement,asoutlinedintheinformation whichwehavesenthome.

It has been a fantastic first half term for Personal Development at Sale Grammar School. We have embodied our school virtue of Community in many ways including volunteering and raising awarenessoftheimportantroleofcharitableorganisations.

OnFriday30thSeptemberwewelcomedourparentsandcarersinto school to enjoy coffee and cake in support of Macmillan Cancer. EveryoneenjoyedthebeautifulpianomusicfromRhysandJago.We were also so proud of our wonderful sixth formers who created beautifultabledecorations,dressedthehall,servedteaandcoffeeand washed up, whilst also sharing stories and experiences of their journeythroughSaleGrammarSchoolwithourguests!

OursecondcommunityawarenessdaywasonMonday10thOctober, WorldMentalHealthDay.Throughourassemblyandourtutortime programme, we discussed the work that Young Minds do in the communitytosupportmentalhealthandwellbeingofyoungpeople.

Wewereoneofthousandsofschools,officesandcommunitieswho tookpartin#HelloYellow,wherestudentsandstaffwereinvitedto wearatouchayellowwiththeiruniform.

We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of our community, especially through such challenging economic times,asatotalof£1638hasbeendonated.Wearesodelightedtobehavebeenablesend£819eachtoMacmillan andYoungMindstosupporttheiramazingworkthattheydointhewidercommunitiesthatwearealsoapartof.

Ourstudentshavesomanydifferentopportunitiestoenrichtheiracademicstudiesduringtheacademicyear,but onewayisthroughthe'CuriosityTalks'series,whichMissRobinsonleadson.Webelievethatitiscrucialthat ourstudentshavethechancetohearaboutarangeofdifferentsubjectmattertoextendtheirabilitytolinktopics whichtheystudytogether,whilstalsodevelopingtheircuriosity.

Sale Grammar School have been delighted to invite in a number of GuestSpeakersoverthepasthalf-termtoenrichourstudents’startto their academic year. We were pleased to launch of Curiosity talks with Matthew and Abz from UA92. They talked to our students aboutmentalhealthandwellbeing,whichcontinuestobeakeyarea to continue conversations about. Both speakers were fantastic role models for our young people and we were inspired by their own personalexperiences.ThankyoutoMattandAbzfortheirpositive outlook and for encouraging our students to speak out and to embracetheirdiversity!

WealsohadabrilliantCuriositytalkfromourveryownMrs.BoylewhosharedherexperiencesofbeingaLocal CouncillorandtheprocessesinvolvedinlocalgovernmentwithourSixthFormPoliticsstudents.Theygaineda valuableinsightintotherealityoflifeinpoliticsanditwaswonderfulforourstudentstodirecttheirquestionsto someonewhohasbeeninvolvedintheprocessestheyarelearningabout.

Andfinally,wewelcomedDaveGibsonfromtheArchitecturefirmHawkins\Brown.OurKS5Geographystudents attendedthistalktounderstandmoreaboutregenerationandgentrificationintheTraffordandwiderManchester areas.WeareincrediblygratefultoDaveandhisteamforcreatingatalktosupportourKS5Geographerswith theirNEA.Theopportunitytousetheexperiencesofaleadingindustryprofessionaltosupporttheirresearchwill certainlyinspireourstudentsastheyapproachtheirNEAprojects.

Each year, The Art Department take part in 'The Big Draw'. The Big Draw Charity was founded in 2000 by the GuildofStGeorge,TheBigDrawisapioneeringvisualliteracycharitydedicatedtoraisingtheprofileofdrawingas atoolforwellbeing,thought,creativity,socialandculturalengagement.Thecharityleadsadiverseprogrammeof advocacy,empowermentandengagement,andisthefounderanddrivingforcebehindTheBigDrawFestival–the world’sbiggestcelebrationofdrawing.Asaschool,weusetheopportunitytoinviteasmanymembersofourschool communitytocometogethertotakepartinDrawingandthisyearwasnoexception.

Wefeelthatitisimportantthatwecontinuetoprovideopportunitiesforourschoolcommunitytojointogetherin largerpiecesofArtandasyouwalkaroundtheschool,youwillseeexamplesoftheseacrossavarietyofsettings.Our Year12studentshavetheopportunitytoengagein'CommunityArt'aspartofthePersonalEnrichmentcurriculum andthisyearisnoexception.

This year's The Big Draw (www.thebigdraw.org) has focused on colourandhasinvolvedbothstaffandstudents.Theirworkwillbe displayedinschoolverysoon!

Students in Key Stage 3 Art have explored drawing with paint, in response to music, under the theme of 'Come Back To Colour'. Looking at the bright colours and marks of the painter Wassily Kandinskytheywereinspiredtoproduceacollaborative,largescale painting,richwithmarkmaking.

Listening to Wagners Ride of the Valkyries inspired students to createarangeofmarks,matchingcolourstothesoundstheyheard, beforecreatingthecollaborativepaintingswhilelisteningtoCamille Saint-Seans'TheCarnivaloftheAnimals'.

KeyStage3Students

Year7havemadeagreatstarttoDesign&Technology,developingthe skills which they already have from primary to produce more complex piecesofwork.Intextiles,thishasinvolvedusingthesewingmachine, reverseappliqueandembroidery,whilstthosewhohavebeeninvolvedin ResistantMaterialshavehadthechancetobothdesignandmanufacture theirownbox.

InYears8and9,studentshavecontinuedtodeveloptheirskillsandhave been able to produce more complex pieces involving a greater range of techniques. For example, their moving vehicles in Resistant Materials havebeenproducedtoasuperbstandard.

KeyStage4Students

TheFoodPreparationandNutritionclasseshavebeenbusylearning about the science of food. They have then used their scientific knowledge to go on to produce some excellent practical outcomes, andtheirskillsofanalysisandevaluationhavealsobeendeveloping overthecourseofthehalfterm.

Students who are studying Design Technology have also been developing their knowledge and understanding across different disciplines.Theyhavecreateddifferentoutputs,includingafantastic automata. They have had to develop their understanding of mechanismsandlinkagesastheywerechallengedtocreateamoving product.

ResistantMaterialsClub:Year8

Year8ResistantMaterialsclubhasseennumbersrisethishalfterm with20studentstakingpartinextendingtheirskillsandconfidence intheworkshoptocreatetheirveryownbirdhouseduringTuesday lunchtimes. It is great to see the enthusiasm and confidence in the students.Thebirdhousesarealmostcompleteandreadyforhanging inthetrees.Wecannotwaittoseewhovisitsthem!

ResistantMaterialsClub:Year9

Year 9 Resistant Materials club has been all about improving accuracy and quality in products with students learning how to change and set up machines with the depth stop during Thursday lunchtime.Thestudentsaredesigningandmakingphonestandsfor theirdeskswhichrequirethestudentstoworktogethertocomplete thedrillingandfinalmanufacture.Wearehopingthattheywillbe readyforChristmas,somaybelookoutforoneoftheseunderyour tree!

ResistantMaterialsClub:KS4

KS4ResistantMaterialsclubhasalsobeenabusyonethishalfterm with both Year 10 and Year 11 students attending Tuesday after school. The students have all been making for fun, some creating a wooden sweet dispenser, others crafting a wooden box with finger jointsandsomeworkingonprojectsoftheirown.Itisfantastictosee their confidence, independence and skills developing and to see so manystudentsengagedinthesubjecteachday!

Drama:AllSystemsGo

Ithasbeen‘allsystemsgo’intheDramadepartmentsincereturning toschoolthisSeptember,withthreetheatrevisits,fourworkshops,a newpodcastepisodeandthesmallmatterofcastingournewschool musical,MadeinDagenham!

MadeinDagenhamisthetruestoryaboutthefemalefactoryworkers ofFordMotor’sDagenhamplant.Setinthe1960s,theskilledfemale machinists went on strike to secure equal pay to the male counterpartsandwonagainsttheAmericancargiants.Thisyearover 80 cast members from every single year group submitted audition videosandweareveryexcitedtogetpreparationunderway.

Aswemoveoutofthepandemic,theatreshavefilledtheirschedules with lots of exciting productions and SGS saw no less than 3 performancesinthemonthofSeptemberalone.

GSCEandA-levelstudentswereabletotakeinoneoftheirsettexts with Years 12 and 13 watching ‘The Glass Menagerie’ at the Royal Exchange Theatre, whilst Years 10 and 11 travelled to London NationalTheatretotakeintheirnewproductionof‘TheCrucible’. Year11havealsovisitedHOMETheatreinManchestertowatchan exciting piece of Physical Theatre called ‘Kin’ by Gecko. This productionconcludedwithaQ&Asessionbetweentheaudience,cast and artistic director which offered a valuable insight into how performancesarecreated.

Drama:SGSSuggestsPodcastReturns!

Having taken in so much live performance, the Drama department have created a new episode of the 'SGS Suggests' Podcast in which we review all three of these theatre productions. Watch out for its release after the half termholiday.ThePodcastsarestudentled,andenablebothstudentsandstaff to reflect on the theatre which they have seen and to discuss a range of differentaspectsabouteachoftheperformances.

TheatreWorkshopsandExtra-Curricular

GCSEandA-levelstudentshavealsobenefittedfromaseriesoftheatre workshopsthishalf-term.Years10and11werevisitedbytheLowryTheatre wholedthemthroughtheprocessofdevising,whilstYears12and13explored thecreativeprocessofworldrenownedtheatrecompany‘FranticAssembly’.

ThefinalworkshopenjoyedbyourA-levelstudentssawanexcitingtheatre companycalled‘PaperBirds’visitschoolwhodeliveredatwohourmasterclass ingeneratingideasintheirstyle.Bothyeargroupsarecurrentlydevisingin theirstylesothisopportunityofferedavaluableinsightintothecompany’s approach.

KS3Dramahavebeenattendingextra-curricularactivitiesintheirdroveswith Year7DramaClubandYear8and9ImprovClubprovingparticularly popular.ThisyearwehaveextendedourPlayClubtoincludeYear9aswellas GSCEandA-levelstudentsandtheyarecurrentlyenjoyingreadingtheplay ‘Emilia’MorganLloydMalcolm.Allstudentsarewelcometojoinanyofthese activitieswhenwereturntoschoolafterthehalf-termbreak,regardlessof experience.

The French cooking club is back! The club provides an opportunity for students from different year groups to come togethertocook,whilstalsoimprovingtheirFrench!

Wehavebeenlearningthenamesofingredientsandworkhard to follow the recipe in French, playing a variety of vocabulary learninggamesaswego!

Thestudentsweredelightedtomakea'fondantauchocolat'.It was a complete success, so here is the recipe for you to try at homeoverthehalftermholiday:

Préparation

Inthefinalweekofthehalfterm,fivestudentsfromYear9and10chose totakepartintheschoolheatsfortheFutureChefcompetition,which issponsoredbySpringboard.Thestandardofthemainmealsthatthey produced was fantastic and congratulations to Alexis, Aliyah, Ashwin, LaurenandFayfortakingthetimetoplanandpractisetheirdishesfor thecompetition.

Only two students can go through to the local heats in November at ManchesterCollege,wheretheywillbejudgedbyindustryprofessionals. The competition was very tight at the top. The winners of the school heatswereAlexisandFay.Congratulationstothembothandgoodluck!

YoungMusicianHeats

Thistermwehavestartedourmusiclessonsandourextra-curricularprogrammeisbackupandrunning.Students havebeeninvolvedintheYoungMusicianheatsandthefinalistobeheldinNovember.Welldonetoallinvolved, the standard was so very high and we are very much looking forward to hearing the pieces performed to a live audiencethiscomingHalfTerm.

Ourstudentsneverfailtoamazeuswiththeirtalents.Therearesomanystudentswhoentertainusduringassemblies eachweekandwhosetalentsbringrealjoytomembersoftheschoolcommunityonaregularbasis.Weweredelighted to be able to end the half term with a musical evening, and once again, the talents of our students amazed the audience.

TheHallsaredemonstratingarealcommunityspirit!

Every member of our school community is a member of a Hall. Fortnightly Hall Assemblies are held which bring our school communitytogethertocelebratetheachievementsofallthestudents acrosseachofthedifferentyeargroups.Hallchallengesarepostedon a regular basis, and in addition to this, students can also gain Hall Pointsfordemonstratingourvirtuesinaction.

OurHallCoordinators,MrFoxcroft,MissPilkington,MrsWeston and Mrs Coverley have been so impressed with the efforts that our students have put into the many competitions already offered this academicyear.

Wehaveenjoyedlookingthroughthemouthwateringentriesforour annualBritishFoodFortnightcompetition,havebeenproudofthe fantastic contributions that our students made to celebrate Fitness Week,andwearecurrentlyreceivinglotsof'spookyentries'toour Halloweencompetition.

Most importantly, however, the record-breaking number of MVP and superstar nominations which have been awarded this half term are testament to the continued commitment that our young Sale Grammar community are putting into their day-to-day lessons, makingourHallsLeaguetablescloserthanever.

Sports RoundUp

It has been another very busy start for students across all areas of PE and Sport, with lots of competitions and activities taking place during this first half term including football, rugby, hockey, netball, primary festivals and much more. The extra curricular programme for PE and Sport started this term with lots of activities for the studentstogetinvolvedinandithasbeenverywellattended.Aselectionoftheseisoutlinedbelow:

Football

Ithasbeenbothaveryexcitingandanextremelybusyreturntoschoolfootballforallyeargroupsthisterm.Allyear groupshavebeentakingpartintheirlocalTraffordSchoolLeague,theboroughwideGreaterManchesterSchoolsFA CupandthenationallevelEnglishSchoolsFACup.AllyeargroupshavemadeagoodstartintheTraffordleagues andareprogressingwell,withtheYr7Boyshavingmadeaparticularlygoodstartandaresofarunbeaten.Afterthe openingtworoundsoftheGreaterManchesterCupwestillhavethemajorityofourteamsinthecompetitionand makinggoodprogress,asisthecasefortheEnglishSchoolsCup.Ourgirls'teamscontinuetobesuccessfulandweare lookingforwardtomorematchesthiscominghalfterm!

SportsRoundUp Basketball

Extra Curricular basketball started this term and has been very well attended. The Trafford Schools' Basketball leagueswillstartafterhalftermandtherewillalsobeNationalcompetitionsandGreaterManchesterNBALeagues fortheYr7andYr8teamslaterintheyear.

Rugby

AnumberofRugbyfixtureshavetakenplacethistermwithmoreplannedforafterthehalfterm.MrFoxcrofthas been taking various age groups to Trafford Tournaments with AOM, Wellington and Stretford Grammar which havebeentakingplaceatTraffordMVRugbyClub.Thestudentshaveperformedverywellattheeventsandhave enjoyedthemgreatly.

Netball

AllthevariousyeargroupteamshavebeenprogressingwellthroughtheirTraffordleaguefixturesandtournaments withallstudentsinvolvedshowinggreatenthusiasmandcommitmenttobothfixturesandtraining.Thesefixtures willcontinueafterhalftermandhopefullytherewillbemuchsuccessstilltocomeforourNetballteams.

Year4PrimaryFestival

ReadersofourNewsletterwillremembertheexcellentachievementsofourstudentslastacademicyearwiththeGirls' Football Event. Following on from this success, we have engaged a group of our Yr10 and 11 GCSE students to demonstrate their leadership skills whilst delivering a Year 4 multi-sport festival which took place at Brooklands SportsClub.

Ourstudentleaderswereallexcellentonthedayandtheywerearealcredittotheschool.Thestudentshelpedto delivereithersquash,lacrosse,cricketorhockeytogroupsofYear4studentsfromacrossarangeofdifferentlocal primaryschools.ThefestivalwasagreatsuccessandboththeprimarystudentsandourSaleGrammarSchoolleaders allhadagreattime.Welookforwardtohostingsomemoreprimaryeventslaterintheschoolyear.

InterhallSports

AswellastheExtra-curricularopportunitieswhichareavailabletoourstudents,andtheopportunitiesforstudentsto representtheschoolduringschoolfixtures,wealsohaveafullrangeofInterhallSportsforstudentsacrossallYear groupstogetinvolvedinthroughouttheacademicyear.

The Interhall Sports programme started this term with dodgeball and Bench Ball taking place at lunchtime. All students were given the opportunity to represent their Hall in either competition. Each year group had their own competitionforbothactivitieswiththewinnersreceivingaincredible100hallpoints!

Boththeactivitieswereverywellattendedinallyeargroupsandthecompetitionwasfierceintheraceforthe100hall points.Alltheteamsperformedexcellentlyandwereacredittotheirrespectivehallsshowingdetermination,passion andourschoolvirtuesofRespectandPerseverancethroughoutthecompetitions.Weareverymuchlookforwardto thenextroundoftheprogrammewhichwillbetakingplacenexthalfterm.

Students also engaged in the inter-hall fitness competition for World Fitness Day and we loved receiving your photographsandvideosofyoutakingpart!Weencourageeveryonetokeepactivethishalfterm!
