PAS 4445 project overview

A PAS is a sponsored fast-track standard that is developed through a consensus-building process facilitated by BSI Standards Limited. A PAS should not be regarded as a BS, EN or ISO standard. Identifier

Background and aim Background BEIS, as it was, ran a call for evidence and a study to better understand if government should enable or require industrial boiler equipment to be hydrogen-ready. One of the results of this was a commitment to sponsor a PAS for hydrogen-ready industrial boiler equipment. Aim The aims of the project are: •

to align the hydrogen-ready large equipment market,

create a shared definition for hydrogen-ready large equipment, and

• give confidence to end-users that this equipment enables faster and cheaper fuel switching to hydrogen than would otherwise be the case. Scope This PAS provides recommendations on general safety, design, construction, testing and performance requirements for large hydrogen-fired equipment, which is either purpose-built to use hydrogen, or is designed to be converted to use hydrogen. The PAS covers hydrogen-fired equipment used in industrial and commercial settings, excluding equipment nominally rated below 70kW. It covers the functional specification of hydrogen-fired equipment, which is either purpose-built to use hydrogen, or is designed to be converted to use hydrogen. It includes specific advice on the demonstration of safety, including reasonably foreseeable conditions to stress the appliance in excess of that which is likely to be experienced in normal service, both before and after conversion to hydrogen

For Review Panel PAS 4445 project overview Date issued: January 2024 This PAS is intended to be used as a supplement to existing standards and generally assumes that any default performance requirements align with those of an equivalent 2nd family gas-fired equipment unless specifically stated otherwise. This PAS does not cover equipment nominally rated below 70kw. It is applicable to OEMs and systems designers of large hydrogen-fired equipment, equipment operators and installers, commissioning, and maintenance service companies. It might also be of interest to notified bodies, insurers/underwriters, natural gas or hydrogen-network operators and UK competent authorities. Responsibilities of the Review Panel (RP) The RP is a wide formation of organizations and individuals representing those stakeholder groups that may be affected by the implementation of a PAS, even if only peripherally affected. Consultation with the RP is vital in terms of building consensus in the development of a PAS. RP members will be invited to submit comments electronically during a public consultation via the BSI Standards Development Portal in w/c 22 July 2024). There are no RP meetings. Due to the time constraints of the project, comments received after the deadline or in any format other than online via the Portal cannot be considered.
