Tribute to Harry Shanz The family of Harry Shanz, plus many friends and former students, arrived at All Hallows on Saturday, April 13th, to pay tribute to a wonderful man and a great teacher who passed away in October 2012 at the age of 89. The 25 member Shanz family contingent combined the All Hallows Reception with a family reunion. Many hailed from the tri-state area, but some from as far away as Florida, California, Virginia and North Carolina. Mass was officiated by Father Jim Gardiner ’60 followed by a tour of the school and a reception at which many expressed fond remembrances of this “larger than life” man and what he meant to their lives. One of the most touching memories came from a letter which was sent by Andrew Lluberes ’79 who was unable to attend the event. In it he said he first met Harry 50 years ago when he was a freshman. For all that time Harry remained a giant in his life and a dear, dear friend always willing to listen and always so proud of the “All Hallows students he took under his wing.” During the reception the first Shanz Scholar, Anthony Solas ’16, was introduced. He thanked the group for the opportunity to attend All Hallows. There was also a reading of the “St. Crispin’s Day” speech from Henry V, performed by senior Christian Viera ’13 of the All Hallows Players, something that would have been dear to Harry’s heart as the school’s longtime drama coach. Harry was a great teacher and humanitarian. Said Frederick Jaeger ’64, “Harry wanted us to regard history as something that was not just a subject, but something we should participate in throughout life.” Harry’s legacy can be summed up by a comment from Frank Giannectino ’65, who said, “He always had an ear to listen and a heart to care.” If you wish to make a contribution to the Shanz Scholarship, you may do so Online or send a check payable to All Hallows in memory of Harry Shanz.

Drama Club Presents: Henry V On Friday, April 19th and Saturday, April 20th the All Hallows Players presented Henry V. Written by William Shakespeare and set in the fifteenth century, the play deals with young King Henry’s efforts to live down his wild adolescence, unite England against civil war, and conquer France against incredible odds. The All Hallows Players teamed up with students from Cabrini to produce this superb recreation. The production was directed by faculty member Paul Michael Fontana. Mr. Fontana has run the School’s drama club since 1996. Henry V was the first play that he directed at All Hallows and that production featured then seniors Kelvin Ramierez and Orlando Brenes. The play entertained two sold-out performances in the Butternut Street Theatre in the Commons.

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT ALL HALLOWS WAY

Senior Retreat 2013 This year’s full-day Senior Retreat was held on Monday, April 29th at the College of Mount Saint Vincent. Speakers, teachers and peer ministers (juniors and seniors trained in ministry) lead the Program which has a consistent theme throughout a year of study. This year’s theme, Walk Humbly with Our God, was incorporated into all workshops and activities including games, dynamic presentations and prayer experiences.

All Hallows Community Gathers for Special Liturgy On Monday, May 20th, the All Hallows community gathered for a special liturgy celebrating one of the largest student groups ever to participate in the Sacramental Program. Forty students from freshmen to seniors, received the Church’s sacraments of initiation at the special Mass celebrated by Bishop Gerald Walsh, the archdiocese’s vicar general. Eleven students were baptized and received Communion for the first time, and all 40 were confirmed. The entire student body was present for the Mass, as were Christian Brothers, board members and parents and other family members of the students receiving the sacraments. During the school year, students who express a desire to receive the sacraments are invited to join All Hallows’ Sacramental Program. They meet during the school day to learn about the meaning and importance of each sacrament. Different teachers discuss the Catholic faith with the students enrolled in the program, which meets weekly. The students built on their faith formation and deepened their spirituality in preparation to receive the sacraments of initiation (baptism, First Communion and confirmation) as well as through a full-day retreat before the special liturgy. “There are many different definitions for evangelization, and this is one of them. This is what our School is all about,” said Paul Krebbs, president of All Hallows.

The Varsity Baseball Team has a record of 19-8 and has advanced to the CHSAA Baseball Championships. The Team went 1-2 on their Florida Trip in April, losing games against the #1 nationally ranked Tampa Jesuits 8-0, and 2009 Tennessee State Champion Knoxville Catholics 9-5. The Junior Varsity Baseball Team lost in the first round of the playoffs. The Golf Team went on a spring trip to the Maryland, DC area. They finished the season with a 4-8 record.

For the past four years, students from All Hallows have been participating in programs sponsored by the National Hispanic Institute. Founded in 1979 in Austin, Texas, the Institute is both national and international in scope. Its mission and purpose is to engage Latino high school youth in critical learning experiences that further their capacities in self inquiry and introspection. This summer 54 freshmen and sophomores will participate in two, weeklong programs sponsored by the Institute. The freshman program, the Great Debate, is held at Villanova University, in PA. The program designed for sophomores, the Lorenzo de Zavala Youth Legislative Session or LDZ, is held at The University of Rochester, NY, and is the most recognized of the high school leadership programs. Luis Rivera, Luis Santos, Jason Rivera, James Melendez and Stephen Hernandez were among those who participated in the 2012 programs at Villanova University, Rochester University and Concelebracion in San Antonio, TX. Through participation in both these programs, our students are provided with the structures and settings to envision themselves as future community leaders, practice their skills in leading and working with others, and engage in critical discussions to define their calling while preparing themselves for the mission of changing lives. Dedication to personal excellence, a strong belief in family and culture, and service to others are the core values and beliefs that drive the work of the Institute and embrace its vision.

MILESTONES AND MEMORIES IN THE ALL HALLOWS COMMUNITY

Remembering members of the All Hallows family Jack Curran ’48, longtime friend and supporter of All Hallows, passed away at the age of 82 on March 17, 2013. For 55 years Jack coached 01 at Archbishop Molloy High School and won nearly 2,000 games in baseball and basketball, a phenomenal achievement. More than that, though, he helped hundreds of students go on to college and to lead more meaningful lives. A native of the Bronx, Curran attended St. John’s University where he studied English and pitched for the baseball team. For three years he played minor league baseball, pitching for teams in the Brooklyn Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies organizations. Although well known as a coach he was also known for his strong Catholic faith and for generous deeds away from the playing field. In 1969 he turned down an opportunity to take the head basketball coaching job at Boston College because of family obligations. According to outfielder Mike Baxter of the NY Mets who played for Jack at Molloy, “He was the most selfless man I know. He was so faithful and he just cared so much about the kids on his team, both on and off the court and field. It really separated him; whether you were playing for him as a junior or a senior or whether you were in college or looking for a job, he would help in any way he could.”
