The Presidio Neighborhood Presidio of San Francisco is an old suburban neighborhood currently with an estimated population of 3,315 people. Over the decades, the Presidio has transformed, offering residents an urban suburban mix with the inclusions of coffee shops, bars and restaurants. Many residents in the Presidio rent their homes and they consist of young professionals and families. This mixture of commercial and residential complexes are accompanied with stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco Bay and Pacific Ocean. Nearby Attractions consist of museums and venues such as the Walt Disney Museum, Presidio Theatre, Crissy Fields, and the Palace of Fine Arts. The Presidio also contains many open green spaces that are often used for numerous events such as food trucks, races and gatherings.

ODYSSEY
| reflection | A voyage that transcends you into the natural wonders of our world, guided by curiosity. The thrill towards field trips, museums, parks when our minds were young and our curiosity at its fullest should not die off because of old age and experiences. For some, experiences like these help us discover who we are. National Geographic represents exploration and protection of our planet, which includes us. Inspired by the Natural Wonders of the World and our innate characteristic, curiosity, I approached the design concept to invoke desire for information.

LOBBY DESIGN
ABOVE: FINAL RENDERING OF LOBBY
I approached the lobby design to spark anticipation, to seek beyond. In order to emphasize the passage into the wonders of the space, I designed the lobby as the start of a voyage. The design of the reception desk and reflective qualities guides you from the entrance to the passage. The dark atmosphere with low lighting and small space help create an intimate moment by establishing the mood that pairs with that of the exhibition as the exhibition is the next immediate space you enter. I looked towards characteristics of caverns to help create the overall design. The entrance beyond the lobby mimics the start of a natural exploration.
18
National Geographic
RIGHT: FINAL RENDERING OF LOBBY
The floorplan encompasses four main spaces, each with different functions; the lobby to guide, exhibition to inform, retail to trade and cafe to enjoy. The exhibition has an open space plan that is flexible for different display layouts. It is also located in the North West, which has lesser natural light. The retail and cafe are both adjacent to each other on the South East side of the building, the most natural light. The change in natural light allows a change in atmospheric ambience and mood. The restrooms are located at the end of the exhibition, towards the back of the building. To help develop the experience of a voyage, I created a central pathway that connects these spaces. Additionally, there are multiple flooring materials for different functionalities.
19
National Geographic
Wayfinding Design Approach The central path is used as an element of wayfinding and is designed as part of the exhibition. Inspired by the Grand Canyon, the central path resembles an alcove. The path is separated from the space by different flooring material, wood flooring, and highlighted with the lighting design that is consistently used throughout the design. The path circles around the spaces, providing a sense of direction of what to do and how to do it; traditionally starting at the exhibition to the retail and ending at the cafe. An experience anyone can follow but also allows the freedom to enter any space individually without traveling through any of the other spaces. The central wayfinding is a solution to connect the spaces in terms of access while allowing them to be independent; all while creating a memorable experience.

A Natural Wonder Design
To establish an intimate and quiet setting similar to that of the lobby, the exhibition does not differentiate in design. I kept the black material to keep a quiet atmosphere and I decided to blockout natural light from the windows, which has unfavorable views. The exhibition also draws inspiration from the Grand Canyon, featuring an alcove. The main design element that continues from the lobby into the exhibition is the epoxy flooring. Epoxy flooring is a suitable material selection for heavy foot traffic while allowing creative design solutions. The flooring design is fluid.
23
RETAIL
The retail store of National Geographic continues the use of materials to that of the lobby and exhibition but on a different scale. The ceiling design of the central path is continued into the retail to provide a sense of continuity as well as the epoxy flooring. To make use of the abundance of natural light, I took away the opaque black and and replaced it with translucent reflective black, glass material. The store in this area features books and large magazine posters. I emphasized light and reflection by having large light columns to help display merchandise and reflective design elements.. The ceiling lighting design, flooring and reflective qualities of the retail space help create an illusion of a man-made cavern.

The second floor features the offices of National Geographic. The reception mimics the lobby, featuring the unique desk design and epoxy flooring to establish unity within the headquarters. The reception is adjacent to the conference room for easy access and additional seating. The private offices and workstations are on opposite sides of the building. Each space is unified by the wayfinding design that is reflected from the first floor.

CLIENT PROFILE This residence consists of the Mom, Maria, daughter, Simona, and grandfather Frank. This is an extended family. Maria, 45, operates a home business. She specializes in photography. Simona is a 16 year old teen and attends San Francisco University High School and participates in extracurricular activities such as dancing. Frank is a retired songwriter and lives with his daughter Maria and granddaughter Simona. He is an elder at the age of 75. The space is home to several generations of unique people; the design is intended to connect the family as their personal lives may divert them, creating a shared environment that caters to their personal dilemmas. They all have their own personal interests, but they still are a family. The space is designed to accommodate the personal interests of the family and the family’s unity. By manipulating space to encourage a sense of privacy and form to encourage personal interest. Even though this is a family, it is still very home to creative individuals. The mom’s home business is a key factor in the design; Combining her home business with the family, then how individually each one can use the space. The design focuses on organic materials to encourage movement throughout the house, physical and mental. Finding a balance between their personal lives and the family as a whole.

ABOVE: FINAL RENDERING OF KITCHEN
As a combined space, the kitchen and dining are located alongside the sunniest side of the building; therefore, having the opportunity to watch the sun emerge or disappear from the horizon. To take advantage of the views, I placed the dining area perpendicular to the window. For functionality, the kitchen has built-in storage along the end of the kitchen. This allows the kitchen design to be open to possibilities. To emphasize the art of cooking, the kitchen is located towards the middle of the space rather than alongside a wall. Additionally, with ample counter space the space feature a bar area with pendant lighting.

Bathroom Suite To present the bathroom as a space of tranquility, I took away hard edges by rounding off the corners creating a dome shape. Additionally, each wall serves as a gate, each with their own purpose. The flooring is continued onto the wall to help unify the space and also draw attention to the bathroom suite feature: freestanding tub, walk-in shower and his & her sink.

To divide the private and public spaces, the home office in pair with the living room are located away from the bedroom; at opposite sides of the building. Home Concept Design As PSA aims to improve life, AVE envisions our efforts to move towards an urban lifestyle where accessibility is the driving force. The home is a 3 level unit that follows the principle of urban centers, setbacks. The setbacks allow natural light to fill the community as well as allowing additional room on each floor for an exposed patio. Additionally, the central staircase wraps around an indoor lift. The glass walls of the lift can trap heat providing effective cooling and heating of the building.

The urban design defines the PSA lifestyle alongside past principles and newly developed principles on how to manage the city life and its infrastructure. The cart here is used as an accessory, a tool. Highly density populated areas will soon render the idea of individual transport obsolete, but the individual needs will always be in need. The concrete jungle of urban centers that was once suited for automobiles will turn into our environment alongside nature.

PROJECT BACKGROUND Home Free Five Keys is a transitional housing program helping women experience freedom for the first time in years. The women who will call these projects home come from a extensive background that ranges from emotional and physical abuse alongside unjustly serving time to be forgotten in the criminal justice system. Five Keys collaborated with AAU students to help design these new homes. The students were then divided into teams. Team Terra consisted of the following individuals: Alfredo Silva-Iglesias, Maria Yajure (3D renderings), Morgan Sandusky (watercolor renderings).
