Message from the President, Hong Kong University Alumni Association Congratulations to HKUAA Choir on its 10th Anniversary! The Choir has become HKUAA’s best ambassador whether it is performing as guest group at the invitation of other concert organisers or at self-organised concerts. Thanks to its founder, Lucy Cheung, whose visionary leadership and unwavering dedication made it possible for a singing community to flourish. Extra recognition is also due to the subcommittee members, including the Section Leaders, the Treasurer, the Secretary, the Hospitality Officer and more, who have voluntarily given their time, expertise, and ideas season after season. The Choir would not have drawn and brought together alumni, both new and seasoned, from different academic disciplines to this supportive singing community without their staunch support and diligent labour. No words can express our gratitude for the HKUAA Choir’s music directors. They are the soul and inspiration behind the Choir, helping it grow from its inception to become a recognised ensemble. I’d like to pay tribute to our late and beloved founding music director, Dr. Michael Ryan, a remarkable educator who was inclusive, demanding and always encouraging. He spent more than eight years with us, and those years were dearly remembered. We are also incredibly grateful to Dr. Lesley Chan, our new music director, whose voluntary services mean more to us than we can express. Dr. Chan, an accomplished choral conductor and active composer who is also a HKU alum, is introducing HKUAA Choir to the local music scene. With Lucy and Dr. Chan at the helm and a devoted subcommittee, I wish the Choir to thrive in the upcoming decades, and leave a lasting impression with its excellent performances. Catherine CHEUNG

Message from the Convenor, Hong Kong University Alumni Association Choir Dear alumni, families and guests, As the Convenor, I am thrilled to welcome you to our 10th Anniversary Concert. Tonight, we celebrate not just a decade of music and performance, but also the resilience, dedication, and harmony that have been our guiding lights. Over the years, our choir has blossomed under the exceptional leadership of two music directors. Our founding Music Director Dr. Michael Ryan of whom choir members will always remember since his passing away in 2021! From 2022 onwards we as a choir are very fortunate and thankful to have Dr. Lesley Chan as Music Director who offers his free time on a voluntary basis in coaching and conducting of HKUAA Choir! The passion for music has been contagious, inspiring us to reach new heights in each performance. Our journey would not have been possible without the unwavering support of the HKUAA members. Your faith in us has been the wind beneath our wings, propelling us forward in our musical journey.
We are deeply grateful for our collaborations with the Hong Kong orchestras, various choirs, artists, and musicians. These partnerships have enriched our performances and broadened our musical horizons. As we sing tonight, we not only commemorate our past, but also look forward to many more years of creating beautiful music together. Thank you for joining us in this celebration. Yours sincerely, Lucy CHEUNG

Message from the Honorary Music Director, Hong Kong University Alumni Association Choir It is surely my honour to be part of the leadership team accompanying the HKUAA Choir into its 10th anniversary. Being part of the HKU community, every musicmaking moment at the HKUAA Choir makes me feel like being home with brothers and sisters. For more than a century, the University has been nurturing talents and leaders for the society. The establishment of HKUAA Choir provides a platform for the alumni to gather and share the joy of making music. Tonight’s concert programme relates closely to the Christian repertoire. I am glad that the Pro-Musica Society brings us a taste of Mendelssohn’s popular oratorio, Elijah, in the first half. Together with the HKUAA a cappella singing group, there are a few secular songs to delight the concert audience with some freshness.
The HKUAA Choir hopes to stage Handel’s Messiah in this special occasion, paying tribute to the late Dr. Michael Ryan, the founding Music Director of the HKUAA Choir. Without his dedicated guidance, the choir would not have come through the journey to celebrate its 10th anniversary. Sincere thanks also go to our Assistant Music Director, Ms. Florence Ng, who has been contributing to the choir ceaselessly. The choir is honoured to present Part II of Messiah in the second half tonight with the Pro-Musica Society and three young vocalists - Soprano Helen Te, Tenor Jermyn Li and Bass Aaron Kwan. Last but not least, I would like to extend my wholehearted appreciation to our organist Kenneth Ma who is currently serving as an organist to St. Mary’s Church and Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and is also an organ scholar in Vox Antiqua. Wish you an enjoyable concert experience. Dr. Lesley CHAN

Program Notes: Messiah Part II George Frideric Handel's oratorio Messiah is a magnificent masterpiece that consists of three parts. Part II of the oratorio focuses on the redemptive and exultant aspects of the Messiah's mission. It explores themes such as the Passion, the Resurrection, and the eventual Triumph of the Messiah – "Hallelujah". Part II of Handel’s Messiah takes the audience on a profound and emotional journey, delving into the central theological themes of redemption, resurrection, and triumph. The chorus "Behold the Lamb of God" unfolds the Part, drawing inspiration from the bible. This powerful chorus reflects on the sacrificial nature of Christ, emphasising his role as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. The choral writing is rich and expressive, capturing the introspective and reverent mood of the text.
Then comes the moment that everyone eagerly awaits: the iconic "Hallelujah" chorus. Undoubtedly the most famous and beloved piece from Handel's Messiah, the "Hallelujah" chorus is a triumphant celebration of Christ's victory and glory. The exuberant choral and original orchestral textures and the resounding "Hallelujah" refrain make this piece a true masterpiece. It is customary for audiences to stand during this chorus, a tradition that originated from the first performance in London in 1743 when King George II rose to his feet upon hearing it. Handel's Messiah has endured for centuries as a beloved masterpiece, captivating audiences with its profound musical and spiritual power. Part II, with its themes of redemption and triumph, continues to resonate with listeners of all backgrounds, offering solace, inspiration, and a profound sense of awe in the face of the divine. Dr. Lesley CHAN

The Pro-Musica Society of Hong Kong The Pro-Musica Society of Hong Kong (Pro-Musica) was founded in August 1970. On an annual or periodical basis, it organises choral concerts to present different types of choral works to the audiences. From time to time, the Pro-Musica would also perform with other choirs, orchestras and arts groups with a view to broadening its experience in different realms and at different levels of the choral art. Such performances included the participation in major western operas; overseas performances with an orchestra and a choir; participation in a full-length ballet; and participation in symphony and oratorio performances sponsored by different orchestral companies. Pro-Musica had also arranged exchange visits to Beijing, Xian, Xiamen and Shanghai for its members. Joint performances with the host choirs were arranged during these visits. Pro-Musica appeared frequently in choral performances presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department at various districts in the past decade. It is hoped that these collaborations could help popularise this form of choral art in Hong Kong.
FlashTrack, a cappella group FlashTrack was founded in 2018 by a group of choral singers from the HKUAA Choir who shared the same passion for music and the desire to expand their repertoire and singing abilities beyond traditional choral singing. Over the years, FlashTrack has participated in various concerts organised by the HKUAA Choir, demonstrating their versatility in both mixed voice (SATB) and female (SSAA) ensembles. Under the guidance and coaching of Mr. Raoul Chan, FlashTrack continually strives to enhance their vocal skills and musical abilities. The group welcomes singers who are interested in exploring the world of a cappella singing, irrespective of their affiliation with HKUAA Choir, with the aim of building a harmonious mix of voices and styles.

Member’s Sharing Corner HKUAA CHOIR: Our First 10 Years 2013-2023 The Hong Kong University Alumni Association Choir (HKUAA Choir) celebrates its 10th anniversary on a remarkable note with a series of events and performances that showcase the choir's musical talent and achievements over the past decade. The choir was established in 2013, with the aim of bringing together alumni of The University of Hong Kong who shared a passion for music. The choir quickly gained popularity among alumni and the local community, with its members hailing from diverse backgrounds and professions. Over the years, the choir has performed in concert halls, LCSD performance venues, community centres and churches, spreading joy and inspiration with their musical renditions. Supporting charitable works have also been a major endeavor of the choir. The limelight was Handel’s Messiah Charity Concert staged at City Hall Concert Hall in the spring of 2018, the event of which was graced by over a thousand guests and philanthropists, canvassing financial support for two major charities in Hong Kong! In the past 10 years (except for the COVID-19 years) HKUAA Choir has consistently supported the Child Development Matching Fund (CDMF), staging performances around the territory with the aim of promoting and engaging community support for CDMF and its worthy cause! Moreover, in November this year HKUAA Choir was invited to perform in a joint choir at Hymnos Festival, spreading the Word of God through music and among non-believers in praise of our Lord! Collaboration with community orchestras, choirs, musicians, and artists has also been one of the HKUAA Choirs manifest activities! We were very fortunate to enjoy the partnerships with the Medical Association Orchestra, the Gary Ngan Orchestra, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra plus the SAR Philharmonic Orchestra with three major concerts at Hong Kong Cultural Centre and Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts this year, featuring Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in one concerted effort at fundraising for charities. Throughout the 10th anniversary celebration, our choir members emphasised the importance of fellowship and a sense of belonging, which we believe are at the heart of the choir's success. The choir has been more than just a musical group to its members; it has been a source of friendship, support, and camaraderie, even after graduation. Dr. Michael Ryan, our music director in past years would always be remembered and treasured by all who knew him from his tutelage and coaching of our choir since its inception in 2013 up to his last days! Memories of Dr. Ryan will always remain with us! Again, HKUAA Choir is very fortunate to have our new music director Dr. Lesley Chan since 2022. We are very grateful for Dr. Chan’s voluntary coaching and conducting thus elevating and raising the standard of singing and performing to a new level! In conclusion, the 10th anniversary of the HKUAA Choir is a testament to the choir's dedication to music and its commitment to bringing people together. Over the past decade, the choir has touched the lives of many people with its powerful and inspiring performances, and has established itself as a cultural icon in the community. The choir members and alumni look forward to many more years of musical excellence and friendship, and to continuing spreading the joy of music for generations to come.

Ten Years My choral life began in primary school. A girl walked up the hill to the playground which led to the school entrance, music room on second floor. I’d never know what made it so exciting. In 2013, I joined HKUAA Choir. Every Saturday, I walk along D’Aguilar Street from Central station see the big green rectangular signboard of HKUAA Clubhouse where we meet for rehearsal on sunny rainy cloudy windy days. Sing, sing, sing, SATB singing in the rain. Think of all the things we have shared and seen –

Mendelssohn’s Come, Let Us Sing, Mozart’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah coffee time chit chat It is surely my honour to be part of the leadership team accompanying the HKUAA Choir into its 10th anniversary. Music heals our souls. In this busy and rapidly changing world, it is undoubtedly our best daily partner in which we should indulge. I am sure that we all have different musical tastes. Embracing such diversity in musical preference is a thing that seems obvious in the HKUAA Choir. Among our members, there are HKU graduates of different generations. As such, it is very important to keep in mind to think about the development of the choir, artistically in particular. I hope that the choir will continue growing into a mature and symbolic artistic organisation in its coming anniversary. Lesley Chan, Honorary Music Director

Since joining HKUAA Choir eight years ago, I have been entirely opened up to a whole new world of choral music, recollecting my long-lost passion in various genres of music. I am grateful for the opportunities to deep dive into the sea of beautiful tunes and classical masterpieces through the choir. Let me use the word CHOIR to sum up what the choir means to me. C - for Contentment, Comfort, Compassion and Consolation that music brings us. Lives are always gracious with music. Music can cheer us up, comfort and console us in good times or bad times, for better or worse. H - for Harmony, the tranquility we strive to achieve in music, calm and peaceful. Harmony asks for our ability and eagerness to actively listen and respond, give and take, support and blend into one another, unity in diversity. O - for Optimism, through our music we spread to others. The world is full of weariness and restlessness. With the gift of music, we learn to appreciate beauty and grace. We choristers are designated a mission to bring about and radiate positive energy to our families and friends, our neighbours and our society. I - for Inspiration, Imagination and Invigoration, which we look for in music. The everlasting beautiful melodies from great composers can enlighten our mind, reduce anxiety, refresh and rejuvenate us. Playing music is the best exercise against ageing. R - for Rapport. With alumni across generations and disciplines, we build rapport among us, share with and support one another. Apart from making music, I enjoy the countless moments of making friends and having fun with the amazing characters in the choir, feeling energised on stage with the adrenalin surge and celebrating the collective success after each concert.
Let's continue making music together for another ten years on! Alfred Sze, Bass

I joined HKUAA Choir in 2014 – one year after its inauguration. I was much delighted and very grateful that the then Music Director, Dr. Michael Ryan, accepted me into the alto section after audition – even though I have never sung in any choir before. Learning to sing in a choir is not a simple task for me. With the guidance and support of the section leader and other fellow altos and my hard work, I manage to overcome the challenges and sing with improvement in the choir. Joining the HKUAA Choir not only allows me to learn singing in my retirement years, but also provides me with the opportunity to meet and build friendship with alumni of different ages and professions. In recent years, I also help the alto section leader with miscellaneous tasks and participated in the subcommittee meetings. I look forward to singing on Saturday afternoons, and the various lively and interesting chats with fellow choir members after rehearsals. My retirement life has been much enriched! I wish HKUAA Choir every success in the coming years.

The 10 years as a member of the HKUAA Choir has been a journey of music, camaraderie and new life pattern. We are most blessed to be learning under the tutelage of Dr. Michael Ryan, our late and cherished founding Music Director, and his capable successor Dr. Lesley Chan, who generously donates his expertise. The wide range of repertoire from The Phantom of the Opera to Messiah. Singing in Chinese, German and Russian has broadened my musical experience and sharpened my singing skills. The choir members are all HKU alumni who have a passion for singing, performing and entertaining our audiences. As a result, even though we are all diverse in age, university studies and stage of life, we always feel a sense of camaraderie among us. Over the past 10 years, approximately two thirds of my Saturday afternoons have been devoted to singing practices in the HKUAA Clubhouse in Central. We sang, learnt and networked. After a rehearsal under high level of concentration, I have to admit that the most enjoyable part was when we went to the Lounge for a cup of coffee and some delicious cakes home-baked by our founder Lucy and our Hospitality Officer Connie! The coffee aroma, the sweetness of the bakery, the buzz and laughter made Saturday afternoons the week’s highlight! Catherine Y. L. Cheung, Alto, Deputy Convenor, HKUAA Choir
I joined HKUAA Choir in March 2013. When I took up the role as alto section leader in the second season, I had no idea of my role, so I could only follow my heart and learn by doing. I am fortunate to have a group of very hard working and cooperative altos who have contributed to our learning of the not-so-melodic alto tunes by making rehearsal recordings for practice, organising MP3s and other materials for easy access by members, etc. The altos have also responded enthusiastically to the call for extra practices and part rehearsals. By and by as we support each other in our struggle together, we have made noticeable improvement and have also developed strong camaraderie in the team. The experience in this journey has been exciting as well as fulfilling. After eight years of alto section leadership, I am glad to have Liz, who is caring, capable, and a good singer, to take up the baton. I am really grateful to HKUAA Choir, and especially the alto team, for giving me very memorable times through the years. The Choir has certainly become my second home. Lianne Tai, Alto

The Future Outlook of HKUAA Choir As we approach the end of 2023, it is with immense pleasure and pride that we reflect on the journey of our beloved HKUAA Choir and share our vision for the future. The HKUAA Choir is more than just a group of singers; we are the embodiment of the Hong Kong University Alumni Association's (HKUAA) rich history and vibrant community spirit. Founded in 1930, HKUAA has served as a beacon of camaraderie and fellowship for our alumni, fostering lifelong bonds and nurturing a shared love for music and performance. Since the purchase of our permanent clubhouse in Central, we have been blessed with a dedicated space for catering, meetings, rehearsals, and social gatherings. Over the past decade, since its inception in 2013, the HKUAA Choir has grown from strength to strength, achieving its objective of uniting HKU graduates who share a passion for music, singing, and performing. We have also succeeded in fostering a platform for networking among alumni members, using music as a universal language that transcends all barriers.
As we look to the future, we are filled with a sense of optimism and anticipation. Our expansive alumni community of close to 40,000 members ensures a continuous influx of new talent and robust financial support. This backing is invaluable as it enables us to constantly enrich our choir and broaden our horizons. The future is even brighter with the guidance of our young and dynamic honorary music director, Dr. Lesley Chan. His dedication and commitment to coaching and conducting our choir in his leisure time are a testament to his passion for music and his belief in our potential. We are indeed fortunate to have him at the helm, steering us towards greater heights. In the years to come, we foresee an increasing number of collaborations with philharmonic orchestras and similar choirs. These partnerships will not only enhance our performances but also provide a platform for our members to learn, grow, and share their love for music on a larger scale. As we usher in a new era, we express our heartfelt thanks to all of you for your unwavering support. United by our shared love for music and fellowship, we look forward to continuing our journey, creating beautiful music, and promoting the spirit of HKUAA Choir for years to come. Here's to a harmonious future filled with music and camaraderie! Lucy CHEUNG Convenor HKUAA Choir
