THE BOARD ROOM TAILS FROM THE EDGE Which is the right tail for what I want to do? SQUASH TAIL The squash tail is the most common tail shape on modern surfboards. The design allows for a stable board, yet manoeuverable ride. A great tail shape for any standard of surfer, the squash tail can be used in both small and overhead waves.
ROUNDED PIN TAIL A more rounded version of the squash tail, the rounded pin tail is most effective in medium to large surf. This shape gives more stability and is perfect for rail-to-rail surfing while doing big, powerful carves.
SWALLOW / FISH TAIL Boards with a swallow or fish tail are generally used in smaller waves and offer great drive, control and speed. In the case of a traditional fish, the more pronounced the tail is the harder it becomes to transition out of sharp turns.
DIAMOND TAIL The diamond tail is becoming less common since the rise in popularity of the squash tail. This tail allows the rider to do turns with really tight arcs and was originally designed to be softer than the square tail without losing speed.
OUR FINS ARE TOUGH AND LIGHT TWIN TIP FIN
The Vanhunks signature polycarbonate fin is almost indestructible. These fins are a third lighter than their acrylic counterparts and a sixth of the weight of standard glass fins. Combined with the right Vanhunks board this fin is a winner.
SURF FIN
Glass-fibre fins with a performance honeycomb core reduces fin weight but still delivers the feel of a traditional fibre-glass fin. The narrower base and fin with inside foil technology offers you better hold and faster response through turns with top-to-bottom control and plenty of speed down the line. Flex tips provide give and control at high speeds.
05
THE BOARD ROOM IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS We use only the best materials to create each Vanhunks board. PAULOWNIA WOOD CORE Paulownia is a silky light golden Hardwood. Paulownia wood is very dimensionally stable and is not subject to warping, cupping or splitting even when exposed to outdoor elements. It also has one of the highest strength-to-weight ratios of any wood, which makes it the perfect core.
HAND SHAPED No pop-out moulds are used during the production process, as we feel every board needs the personal touch only a human hand can give. Shapers take precise care of every single board, and this can only be achieved through a hand-glassed layup. Exact measurements are replicated and we adopted an extremely low tolerance factor to the original shape. The glass layup is carefully done by hand, the angles and the tightening of the fabric is carried out with extreme precision to ensure the board has feeling under your feet.
EPS An acronym for Expanded Polystyrene. This is lightweight beaded foam used in the production of epoxy surfboards. We use the best tried-and-tested EPS density foam for the board application. The EPS foam is wrapped in an epoxy sandwich construction, which is then vacuum bagged to ensure no air is trapped inside.
POLYCARBONATE Polycarbonate is a versatile, tough plastic used for a variety of applications. The main advantage of polycarbonate over other types of plastic is its unbeatable strength combined with light weight. Polycarbonate is nearly unbreakable.
BIAX GLASS AND PVC SANDWICH A combination of top quality Biax Glass fabrics in combination with PVC layers on deck and bottom provides optimised durability to reach an excellent weight ratio.
WOOD SANDWICH A lightweight yet robust wood and glass fibre construction with a very high strength-to-weight ratio. This is an extremely durable layup, even for the hardest landings, that still gives optimal flex at pressure zones.

KITEBOARDING
09
When it came to designing our kiteboards, we wanted to create equipment that would allow the rider to get maximum enjoyment and control from the experience. So we designed the perfect surfboard and then reinforced it to compensate for the impacts of kiting. The result – light, high-performance boards that allow the rider to park the kite and actively surf the waves, rather than let the kite do all the work. All our directional kiteboards are designed for both strap and strapless riding. Our directional kiteboards are the perfect travel companion, as they can easily be surfed as a normal shortboard when the swell is up and the wind isn’t.

“Vanhunks is a Cape Town born company. When Table Mountain is covered by the white cloud tablecloth, every kite surfer knows conditions are perfect.”
The legend goes that in the 1600s a man called Van Hunks lived on the mountain. He used to smoke his pipe day in and day out. One day, he was challenged by a man in a dark coat to a smoking duel. Van Hunks and the mysterious man smoked until the mountain was covered in a cloudy haze. To this day, whenever the South Easter blows, people in Cape Town refer to the legendary Van Hunks duelling with the devil again.”
