INTRODUCTION Martinhal Beach Resort and Hotel in Sagres, Algarve has all the elements for a great biking holiday – while Northern Europe goes into deep winter, the region enjoys many sunny days and the season can only be described as “Autumn going straight into Spring”. In a joint venture with Algarve-Cycling-Holidays onsite we are going to host our 10th Martinhal Bike Week as a very special road cycling event. Algarve-Cycling-Holidays is bringing a whole new concept to road cycling to the Algarve. Use the opportunity to ride with the newly crowned Belgian CHAMP Jens De Busschere and other Belgium pro cyclist, Jürgen Roelandts, both from team Lotto Belisol. This package is designed to develop and improve your riding capabilities whilst enjoying Portugal’s leading family resort. There are many things to do like complimentary kids clubs, yoga, fitness and Spa that can be used by your family while you are pushing the pedals. In addition to riding in the beautiful Algarve landscape under the November sun we will be providing evening workshops hosted by Dr. Aerenhouts, a well-known professor at the VUB (Vrije University Brussels) he will be covering information on training principals, exercise physiology, sports nutrition and much more. The seminars will be delivered in English finishing with a Q and A session allowing you to design your own optimal training program. It will be a cycling experience you will never forget with professional cyclists riding with YOU at your pace.
CONCEPT We have a full week program designed to give you a complete cycling and training experience including: • 5 road tours hosted by Jürgen and Jens, ranging from 60 - 120km throughout the week and Strava challenge day; • bicycle exercise test with training advise from Dr Arenhouds; • Après bike with the pro’s; • 2 seminars covering training principles and sports nutrition;
Check out our latest bike week videos with Marcus Burghardt, BMC and André Greipel, Lotto Belisol.
SPECIAL GUESTS
Jens Debusschere Jens Debusschere is a new breed of Belgian rider who started to perform at a young age by taking the title of Belgian junior national champion and winning the tour of Flanders in 2007. Lotto Belisol have taken him under their wing to kick start his professional career. In 2013 he showed the sponsors his value by taking his first professional victory in winning the championship of Flander Koolskamp. He continued to deliver that season by winning the EuromĂŠtropole tour and the Sluitingsprijs Putte- Kapellen. After taking the sprint finish from Tom Boonen at the nationals this year he is awarded the title of Belgian Champion.
Jürgen Roelandts Jürgen Roelandts was one of the biggest professional starters in his first year showing fantastic performance with no opponent getting in his way. The following season he suffered from some bad luck but still managed to win the Ghent- Wevelgem and the world championship in Copenhagen. Since 2013, he rides for the Lotto Belisol team and is showing good shape by winning a stage in the Tour Méditerranéen and after riding an impressive Tour of Flanders in the spring he took third place. Put them both together and you have one of the unique and best riders out of Belgium.
SPECIAL GUESTS
Dirk Aerenhouts Dirk Aerenhouts has a PhD degree in Physical Education and Movement Sciences. His PhD thesis dealt with the nutritional needs and physical development of adolescent sprint athletes and how this development influenced the sprint start and acceleration. Currently, his research focusses on talent detection, the determination of body composition and energy expenditure during different types of activities. Dirk Aerenhouts works at the Free University of Brussels, the University of Antwerp and the Erasmus University College Brussels where he teaches different courses to the students of Physical Education and Physiotherapy including Biology, Biochemistry of Exercise, Sports Nutrition and Fitness & Health.
SEMINAIRE SESSION 1 An informal presentation covering training principles and exercise physiology, including guidelines for optimal preparation, performance and recovery. Training intensity, frequency and duration, how to make a training program for cycling and biometric parameters that may offer an advantage in cycling will also be discussed. How much high intensity training is good and how much rest do you need to optimally take advantage of the super compensation effect? What are the differences between the specialists in time trial and climbing? What type of cyclists are more suited to perform in the heat and what is the importance of acclimatisation? SESSION 2 An informal presentation covering nutritional guidelines for optimal health and performance. Comparing an athlete to sedentary people, an athlete has increased needs for energy, macro- and micronutrients. We will explain how to calculate nutritional needs for the individual athlete and optimal hydration for an athlete as a small degree of dehydration has a negative impact on performance. We will discuss how carbohydrates are necessary for high intensity performance whilst protein needs are increased to repair tissue damage, proteins serve as tissue building blocks and support the immune system. Also, how minerals and vitamins have an important role in metabolic pathways (how our macronutrients are broken down to deliver energy to the working muscle) and act as anti-oxidants. Is it possible to have sufficient dietary intake of these micronutrients or is it necessary to take food supplements? We will suggest some foods that can influence performance.
