Colour is pretty great. Especially when it’s colour-coding.

Discarded Thoughts

Okay now. Let’s get after this! It’s been pretty fun already, right? Projects are up next.

My outcome was an examination of our world in regards to sustainability and waste. It talks about the relationship between these two things and helps to promote awareness and mindfulness, rather than guilt and shame.

Discarded Thoughts

This project resulted form the first assignment presented in a typography class. Required to look at the surrounding community as a source for unique typography and to take my own photos, I combined these to create a dialogue.

Publication. Hand-made. Combining type and photo. Limitations: photos in black and white, type must interact with images. 2019.

In staying true to the theme, re-purposed materials were used in creating the final piece for this work. An old shipping box was cut down into cardboard covers, random pieces of paper were salvaged from past projects and printed on—sometimes printing over existing textures or content. The only ‘new’ parts used in constructing this item were the thread and packing tape in the binding. These materials added to the overall aesthetic. This project was a fantastic exercise in creativity, and in finding new purposes for used items.

Hey, that was kind of neat. You should check out the next one. I’m kind of excited.

Period Poverty

This project served as an exploration of the many processes involved in taking a concept from initial brief to finished product. Assigned to teams, the task was to develop various visual solutions intended to provide imagery

for an upcoming local campaign that would be promoted entirely on social media. Each group presented mock-ups for the client’s final selection. Our team received second-place honours for our colourful, typographic solutions.

The focus was to begin shifting negative stereotypes that exist around feminine products. This goal would help to encourage comfortable discussion around the topic, as well as to increase donations of these necessary products to the Medicine Hat and District Food Bank. These images would each display alongside corresponding haghtags. The particular designs shown here were my own contributions for the team’s final submission. The feminine products in each example featured commandingly within their individual compositions. They are surrounded by bright, cheerful colours and playful typography.

Alrighty, then. On to the next one. Let’s keep this thing rolling.

In the Two-Rein

Being the first major drawing project in which students were able to select their own subject, I enjoyed the opportunity to focus on passions from outside school. This piece helped me recognize my desire to bring attention to

the finest details. In the Two-Rein is at once a study of value and an exploration of the then-unfamiliar world of art and design. It also serves as a celebration of my cultural background, growing up as a student of the horse.

Drawing. Graphite pencil. Stonehenge paper. 24” x 16”. Western traditions. It’s all in the details. 2015.

She can draw, too? Hmm... What a useful range of skills... Ahem, I mean, I’ll let you decide. Carrying on, then.

Online Form

During my time in the second level web design course at Medicine Hat College, there was a shift in coding from what I had learned earlier. CSS grid was filtering into mainstream use. In order to keep students on the front edge

of technology, the instructor posed a project that incorporated HTML and CSS grid, by way of introducing the mechanics behind creating a functioning online form. My solution also included scalable vector graphics.

Cowboy Wisdom

Production and editing skills were combined in order to accomplish this authentically western, video documentary. The piece showcases the life of today’s modern rancher, focusing on the story behind Clay Ranch Quarter Horses,

In completing this documentary assignment, it was fun to experiment with audio, b-roll and editing techniques. Throughout the project, I really wanted to push myself and my ideas to create interest, while keeping in mind that there should be a distinct agricultural perspective.

Again, again! Come on, flip that page. Keep going, you can do it! I can cheer you on, if you want?

Throughout the semester, the instructor had emphasized thinking outside the box, knowing when to push the boundaries and experimenting with ideas. This two page magazine layout stood out as a unique solution.

Typography. Magazine spread. Print advertising. Limitations: 2 font sizes, 1 font family, 1 colour, 0 images. 2015.

Experimental Type

In order to challenge creativity and the process of developing ideas in a first-year typography course, the instructor provided this as a final assignment, containing some extremely strict limitations on use of type and content.

Based on extensive experience working with the Miss Rodeo Canada Society, I was able to communicate closely with various members of the Board of Directors in order to create a product that was true to their vision.

This real-world project presented a fantastic chance to practice communicating with clients and project management. Content was received in various formats and from multiple sources before being organized into a cohesive layout.

Hmm... That was interesting. A real-life project. It would be awesome to get some more of those...

Clay Ranch

Throughout my education, I’ve made a point of incorporating elements of agriculture and design when possible. Especially where topics are based on student preference, it’s enjoyable to use my family’s ranch as a subject.

For one such project, I created a brand identity for Clay Ranch Quarter Horses. The starting point was a design for an equine freeze brand. That result was interpreted as a logotype before being incorporated into various other materials.

Thank You

Wait, is there more? We’d better check it out. Come on, hurry!

Oh, I guess not. In all serious-ness, though: thank you very much for your time, and all the best. Ali.
