Sostenibilità, etica, benessere animale, parità di genere, biodiversità, inclusione sociale e non solo…. Grazie anche alla community dei social media, il mondo intero, e nel nostro caso non solo quello degli “horse lovers” è ormai perfettamente connesso con temi di così grande attualità.

Convegni e seminari con focus questi argomenti sono all’ordine del giorno anche nelle stanze dei bottoni delle più accreditate Federazioni e Associazioni che governano a livello internazionale e nazionale il mondo degli sport equestri.

Il 2024 è l’anno olimpico e come ciclicamente, e purtroppo esclusivamente, avviene per tutti gli sport cosiddetti minori in occasione dell’appuntamento a cinque cerchi, le tre discipline dell’equitazione saranno oggetto di una non certo abituale attenzione mediatica e televisiva.

A fine gennaio la disciplina del completo ha saputo che non ha ancora una formale conferma d’inserimento nel programma dei Giochi di Los Angeles 2028 e che deve proporre ulteriori modifiche al suo format. Questo è un forte segnale sulla necessità di maggiore attenzione per presentare al CIO ed al grande pubblico quanto di meglio è nelle corde delle discipline equestri olimpiche.

Mentre addetti ai lavori e stakeholders si stanno mobilitando e, unendo le forze con la FEI, sollecitano per una forte azione sul benessere dei cavalli (proprio questo sarà uno degli argomenti all’ordine del giorno del Forum FEI 2024 di fine aprile): un primo importante segnale di attenzione sul loro ruolo nell’ambito dello sport è arrivato proprio dall’Italia.

La FISE, con il Presidente Di Paola in prima linea, si è battuta perché i cavalli iscritti nei registri dei cavalli sportivi fossero riconosciuti legalmente, al pari di uomini e donne, come veri e propri atleti. La normativa italiana adesso lo afferma inequivocabilmente, dopo che il Decreto Legislativo di riferimento (art.22 D.lgs 26/2021) è entrato in vigore nel settembre scorso.

La notizia che il nostro Paese sia stato il primo a raggiungere questo traguardo, come conferma la rassegna stampa estera, è stata accolta dai paesi ippicamente più progrediti con grande interesse ed è considerata un esempio da seguire.

Un grande passo verso un buon futuro. Viva lo sport, i cavalli e chi li ama!

Sustainability, ethics, animal welfare, gender equality, biodiversity, social inclusion and more.... Also thanks to the social media community, the entire world, and in our case not only the world of “horse lovers”, is now perfectly tuned to such topical issues.

The major Federations and Associations governing the world of equestrian sports at the international and national level are indeed organizing a series of conferences and seminars on these themes.

2024 is the Olympic year, and as is cyclically and unfortunately the case for all the so-called minor sports on the occasion of the five-ring event, the three equestrian disciplines will be under an unusual media and television spotlight.

At the end of January, it came out that eventing had not yet been formally included in the Los Angeles 2028 Games program and that it had to propose further changes to its format. This was a wake-up call to pay more attention to showing the IOC and the public at large the best that the Olympic equestrian disciplines can offer.

While insiders and stakeholders are mobilising, joining forces and urging the FEI to take a strong stance on horse welfare (one of the items on the agenda of the FEI 2024 Forum at the end of April), the first important sign of the crucial role horses play in the sport came from Italy.

FISE, spearheaded by its President Di Paola, has fought to ensure that horses registered as sports horses be legally recognised as real athletes, on a par with men and women athletes. This is now the unequivocal wording of the Italian legislation, after Law Decree no. 26/2021 came into force last September.

The news that Italy was the first to reach this milestone, as confirmed by the foreign press review, was greeted by the most advanced equestrian countries with great interest and is considered an example to follow.

A great step towards a good future. Long live sports, horses and horsy people!

Vive a Barcellona, da bambina disegnava cavalli, ma presto è passata agli studi di legge, diventando avvocato, giudice e docente associato presso l'Università Rovira i Virgili per dieci anni. Ora è una donna d’affari e un’istruttrice equestre diplomata, ma fin da piccola ha portato la sua macchina fotografica quasi ovunque. Il suo primo lavoro part-time da adolescente fu in un laboratorio fotografico e nel 1990, all'età di undici anni, la sua prima fotografia equestre fu pubblicata su una rivista. Il suo spirito avventuroso l'ha portata a rinunciare a tutto nel 2012 per realizzare il suo sogno di viaggiare per il mondo per più di sei mesi. Quando finalmente torna è per immergersi nelle sue passioni: la fotografia e l'equitazione. A quasi quarant'anni inizia il corso federale per diventare istruttrice e si iscrive anche al Master in Fotografia e Design di Elisava perché se una cosa le è chiara, è che si vive una volta sola.

Based in Barcelona, as a child she used to draw horses, but soon she moved on to study law, becoming a lawyer, a judge and associate lecturer at the Rovira i Virgili University for ten years. Now she’s a businesswoman and a licensed equestrian instructor, but from a very early age she has carried her camera nearly everywhere. Her first part-time job as a teenager was in a photography lab and in 1990 at the age of eleven, her first equestrian photograph was published in a magazine. Her adventurous spirit led her to give up everything in 2012 to fulfil her dream of travelling around the world for more than six months. When she finally returned, it was to immerse herself in her passions, photography and horse riding, at almost forty years of age she started Federal Course to became a trainer and she also enrolled in Elisava’s Master of Photography and Design programme because if one thing clear to her, it is that you only live once.

Silvia Pallottino, romana e appassionata di cavalli sin da ragazza, è affermata interprete di conferenze organizzate ai massimi livelli istituzionali sia di livello nazionale che internazionale. Capo equipe per la traduzione simultanea delle conferenze del G20 ospitate sotto la presidenza italiana e language coach, ha iniziato a montare a cavallo nella più famosa scuola di equitazione della capitale, la Società Ippica Romana, dedicandosi inizialmente al salto ostacoli. L’amore per la natura e gli spazi aperti l’ha in seguito “dirottata” sulla disciplina del concorso completo di equitazione e più recentemente sull’endurance, specialità che tutt’ora pratica, non più a livello agonistico ma con grande passione, nei ritagli di tempo che l’attività professionale le consente.

Silvia Pallottino, born and raised in Rome, has been passionate about horses since she was a girl. She is an established conference interpreter at the highest institutional levels both nationally and internationally, including her role as chef d’equipe for the simultaneous translation of the G20 meetings hosted under the Italian presidency, and a language coach. She started riding in the capital's most famous riding school, Società Ippica Romana, initially devoting herself to show jumping. Her love for nature and open spaces later veered her towards eventing and more recently to endurance, a speciality that she still practises, no longer competitively but with great passion, in the spare time off her professional activity.

L'Italia sulla rotta per Parigi

Parigi val bene un’Olimpiade. Dal 26 luglio all’11 agosto la capitale francese sarà sede della più grande manifestazione sportiva per la terza volta, dopo averla ospitata nel 1900 e nel 1924. A distanza di un secolo esatto, i cinque cerchi tornano quindi nella Ville Lumière e gli sport equestri lo faranno in una fantastica location, davvero unica al mondo: la Reggia di Versailles, dove si disputeranno tutte le specialità olimpiche (salto ostacoli, completo e dressage), seguite dal dressage paralimpico dal 28 agosto all’8 settembre.

L’Italia si sta preparando al grande evento, nel quale sarà rappresentata da un binomio a titolo individuale nel salto ostacoli, dalla squadra nel concorso completo e nel paradressage.

Sulla trasferta olimpica e paralimpica è concentrata ovviamente la massima attenzione dei tecnici che dovranno stabilire quali saranno i cavalieri e le amazzoni che vestiranno l'azzurro. C’è ancora tempo per la definizione dei nominativi ma nel frattempo, nella conferenza stampa FISE di presentazione dei programmi 2024, i vertici FISE hanno fatto il punto sull’iter di avvicinamento al traguardo di Parigi e sui grandi appuntamenti che l’Italia si prepara ad ospitare nella stagione iniziata che è peraltro quella che chiude il secondo quadriennio di presidenza per Marco Di Paola. «Sono stati otto anni di grande soddisfazione sia in termini di risultati sportivi ma anche per il forte efficientamento della federazione sia numericamente che per risultati economici. Il merito della qualificazione per i Giochi di Parigi è tutto dei ragazzi ed è a loro che deve andare il nostro riconoscimento e quello di tutti gli appassionati».

Su questo aspetto ha posto l’accento anche Francesco Girardi, direttore sportivo della FISE dal febbraio 2017, responsabile del dipartimento del completo e in precedenza due volte in gara in questa disciplina alle Olimpiadi (Seul 1988 e Barcellona 1992). «La qualificazione per Parigi non è un risultato scontato: negli ultimi anni negli sport equestri c’è stata la crescita di numerose altre nazioni che nel tempo sono diventate particolarmente competitive. I cavalieri e le amazzoni e i loro team che contribuiscono alla costruzione del risultato, meritano un grande plauso».

Girardi ha illustrato anche l’avvicinamento azzurro di salto ostacoli e completo all’appuntamento olimpico.

«La qualificazione è un punto di partenza, adesso c’è da completare il lavoro per arrivare al meglio a Parigi, in ogni specialità. Nel salto ostacoli, disciplina che fa registrare l’ultima presenza di una squadra ai Giochi nell’ormai lontano 2004 (Atene), la qualificazione individuale è arrivata con Emanuele Camilli, primo nel ranking FEI B. Il tecnico selezionatore, Marco Porro deciderà in base ai risultati della stagione e allo stato di forma dei cavalli se sarà lui a staccare il biglietto per Parigi, monitorando i risultati in una serie di gare 5*. Tra queste ci saranno sicuramente i concorsi di Piazza di Siena e Falsterbo».

Nel completo tutti i cavalieri dovranno completare la qualifica ultimando almeno un 4* entro giugno. «Cercheremo di sfruttare soprattutto gli appuntamenti italiani, ai Pratoni del Vivaro e a Montelibretti. All’estero invece le due sedi di osservazione saranno Saumur e Luhmühlen. Dobbiamo pianificare singolarmente gli impegni perché la maggior parte dei nostri atleti opera stabilmente all’estero. 2024 OLYMPICS ITALY ON ITS WAY TO PARIS

Paris is worth an Olympics. From July 26 to August 11, the French capital will host the top sporting event for the third time, after the 1900 and the 1924 editions. Exactly a century later, the Five Rings are back to the Ville Lumière, and equestrian sports will be there too in a fantastic location, truly unique in the world: the Palace of Versailles for all the Olympic disciplines (jumping, eventing and dressage), followed by the Paralympic dressage competition from August 28 to September 8. Italy is preparing for the big event, where it will be represented by an individual combination in jumping, and by an eventing team and a paradressage team.

The Olympic and Paralympic trip is obviously the focus of the chefs d’equipe, set to choose the riders who will wear the blue colours. There is still time to present their names, but in the meantime, on the occasion of the FISE press conference for the presentation of the 2024 programs, the FISE top representatives took stock of the progress towards Paris and discussed the major events that Italy is preparing to host in the season that has just begun, which is also the one closing the second four-year mandate of its President, Marco Di Paola.

«Eight years of great satisfaction with sporting achievements but also with the considerable improvement in the efficiency of the federation both in terms of figures and economic results. The credit for the qualification for the Paris Games goes to the riders and we and all the fans must pay tribute to them».

La squadra del paradressage ovviamente ruota intorno alla nostra stella indiscussa: Sara Morganti.

«Questa è una disciplina – spiega Girardi – che ci ha dato finora tantissime soddisfazioni: su tutte i due bronzi olimpici conquistati da Sara a Tokyo 2021 con Royal Delight. L’aspetto più importante è che intorno a lei si stia costruendo una squadra molto competitiva, con la quale sì partecipare a Parigi ma puntando a risultati di rilievo. I nostri atleti avranno peraltro modo di sfruttare due appuntamenti casalinghi per la giusta preparazione, con due CPEDI a Ornago».

A proposito della Morganti, per l’azzurra nel frattempo c’è stato un importante riconoscimento extra agonistico. Già presidente della Commissione Nazionale Italiana Atleti del nostro Comitato Paralimpico, Sara è infatti da poco entrata a far parte dell’European Paralympic Committee, il consiglio europeo degli atleti paralimpici.

«Qualifying for Paris is not to be taken for granted: in recent years, equestrian sports have witnessed the growth of many other nations that have become particularly competitive over time. The riders and their teams that contribute building the result deserve great praise», he says.

Girardi also illustrated the preparation of the Italian jumping and eventing riders for the Olympic appointment.

«The qualification is a starting point, now we have to finalize our work to arrive at our best in Paris, in each speciality. In the jumping discipline, represented by an Italian team at the Games last time back in 2004 (Athens), the individual qualification was obtained by Emanuele Camilli, first in the FEI B ranking. The selecting coach, Marco Porro, will decide whether he will be the one to take the ticket to Paris on the basis of the season's results and the horses' fitness, monitoring the results in a series of 5* competitions. These will certainly include Piazza di Siena and Falsterbo».

In the eventing specialty, all riders must complete the qualification by finishing at least one 4* by June. «We will try to exploit above all the Italian events, at Pratoni del Vivaro and Montelibretti. The two observation competitions abroad will be Saumur and Luhmühlen. We have to plan our participation individually because most of our athletes work abroad on a permanent basis. The FISE representatives (Katherine Lucheschi and Giacomo Della Chiesa, alternating as chefs d’equipe, the veterinary doctor Marco Eleuteri, and the young riders’ chef d’equipe Jacopo Comelli, who has been made available for additional technical support) will be present at all competitions.

«Il merito della qualificazione per i Giochi di Parigi è tutto dei ragazzi ed è a loro che deve andare il nostro riconoscimento e quello di tutti gli appassionati».

The paradressage team obviously revolves around our undisputed star: Sara Morganti.

«This is a discipline,» Girardi explains, «hat has given us so far so much satisfaction: above all the two Olympic bronze medals won by Sara in Tokyo in 2021 with Royal Delight. The most important aspect is that a very competitive team is being built around her, indeed to participate in Paris, but aiming for top results. Our athletes will also be able to take advantage of two competitions at home for their proper preparation, two CPEDI in Ornago».

Speaking of Morganti, in the meantime, the Italian athlete has received an important extra-competitive recognition. Sara already serves as president of the Athletes' Council of the Italian Paralympic Committee, but she recently joined the European Paralympic Committee Athletes’ Council.

Campioni, vittorie e un ciuffo d'erba

Il 2023 è stato un anno da incorniciare per Sabina Cartossi, l’appassionata proprietaria ticinese che da dieci anni ha trovato in Steve Guerdat un cavaliere perfetto per i propri cavalli e una invidiabile intesa nella loro gestione.

La passata stagione le ha portato la medaglia d’oro individuale del Campionato d’Europa a Milano con Dynamix de Belhéme e la vittoria della prestigiosa Rolex IJRC Top Ten a Ginevra con Venard de Cerisy. Segue i suoi cavalli in tutti i concorsi più importanti distinguendosi sempre per eleganza, passione e riservatezza. Per lei il passaggio al ruolo di proprietaria è arrivato per necessità e non per scelta ma ovvio che, se si guarda alle soddisfazioni che ha avuto modo di collezionare, non può che essere al settimo cielo nel considerare i traguardi raggiunti.

«Ho trasferito a mia figlia Isabel la passione per i cavalli che sin da piccola mi ha fortemente coinvolto – spiega Sabina Cartossi. Lei, esattamente come io avevo fatto con mio padre quando aveva poco più di 5 anni, mi ha chiesto durante le vacanze estive di poter iniziare a montare a cavallo.

Eravamo in Engadina sulle sponde del lago di St. Moritz. É lì che lei ha iniziato la sua carriera ed è lì che io ho invece ripreso quella che avevo iniziato quando abitavo ancora in Italia, il mio paese di nascita, sul lago Maggiore.

Ci eravamo trasferiti con la famiglia da Monaco di Baviera a Lugano e quindi al rientro dalle vacanze abbiamo cercato lì il centro che sarebbe poi stato il nostro quartier generale. Nel giro di sei mesi avevo già cinque cavalli oltre al pony di mia figlia. Devo riconoscere che avevo una grande passione e determinazione ma quanto a talento non potevo minimamente paragonarmi a Isabel.

Per lei tutto veniva molto facile tanto che è entrata nel mirino dei selezionatori della fascia giovanile che già all’età di undici anni l’hanno inserita nella squadra della federazione svizzera.

Quello stesso anno è arrivata per lei la medaglia nel Campionato d’Europa Children. In quella fase ho iniziato a passare a lei i miei cavalli migliori e lei ha fatto molti risultati importanti».

Isabel ha però smesso di montare a cavallo quando aveva quindici anni e Sabina Cartossi, che nel frattempo aveva realizzato il suo sogno di avere una scuderia di famiglia, la C.H.C. Horses La Fattoria a Sementina, ha scelto di non vendere i cavalli bensì di affidarli a un cavaliere per continuare a valorizzarli.

«L’incontro con Steve Guerdat è avvenuto tramite Thomas Fuchs che era il trainer di Isabel e dunque molto vicino alla nostra famiglia. Ho mandato i cavalli da lui e suo figlio Martin ha iniziato a montarli. Thomas ci ha segnalato che in società con Steve aveva comprato Corbinian (il cavallo con cui ha vinto la FEI World Cup 2016: n.d.r.) e che cercavano un comproprietario per affiancarli. Un proprietario che non fosse interessato ad un’operazione di commercio ma un sostegno per la crescita di un soggetto che dimostrava a suo avviso e come effettivamente è stato, di avere tutti i numeri per una carriera importante »

CHAMPIONS, WINS AND A TUFT OF GRASS

2023 was a year to remember for Sabina Cartossi, the passionate owner from Ticino who, ten years ago, found in Steve Guerdat a perfect rider for her horses and an enviable agreement on their management. Last season he brought her the individual gold medal in the European Championship in Milan with Dynamix de Belhéme and a victory in the prestigious Rolex JIRC Top Ten in Geneva with Venard de Cerisy. She follows her horses to all the most important competitions, always with elegance, passion and restraint.

For her, the transition to the role of owner came out of necessity and not by choice, but looking at the satisfactory results she has been able to obtain, she is clearly over the moon when considering her achievements.

«I transferred the passion for horses that I have nurtured been since I was a child to my daughter Isabel - explains Sabina Cartossi - the summer holidays, she asked me to let her start riding horses, just as I had asked my father when I was just over five years old.

We were in the Engadin, on the shores of the lake in St. Moritz. It was there that she began her career and it was there that I instead resumed what I had started while still living in Italy, my birthplace, on Lake Maggiore.

We had moved with our family from Munich to Lugano and so on our return from the holidays, we looked for a facility there that would later be our headquarters. Within six months, I already had five horses in addition to my daughter's pony. I must admit that I had great passion and determination, but I couldn't even compare myself to Isabel talent wise. It all came so easy for her that she attracted the attention of the junior riders’ selecting team who included her in the Swiss federation team when she was eleven. In same year, she won a medal in the European Children Championship. At that stage, I started to pass my best horses to her and she achieved many important results».

However, Isabel stopped riding when she was fifteen and Sabina Cartossi, who had fulfilled her dream of having a family stud farm, the C.H.C. Horses La Fattoria in Sementina, chose not to sell her horses but rather to entrust them to a rider to for their further development.

«I met Steve Guerdat through Thomas Fuchs, who was Isabel's trainer and therefore very close to our family. I sent my horses to him and his son Martin started riding them. Thomas told us that he had bought Corbinian in partnership with Steve (the horse with which he would go on to win the FEI World Cup in 2016: editor's note) and that they were looking for a co-owner to join them not as a business transaction but to support the growth of a horse that, in his opinion and as indeed was the case, showed t he had all the traits to have an important career».

So, Sabina Cartossi's new career as an owner began with the purchase of Corbinian, who is now enjoying a well-deserved retirement at C.H.C. Horses La Fattoria. «This is how we got to know each other with Steve and started to build a relationship that I can honestly say goes far beyond a sheer professional partnership. Steve will never ask you on principle to buy a young horse for an exaggerated amount of money. Together with my partner Gianluca Agustoni, who was himself a top rider, we only buy young horses as Steve prefers. He is a wonderful person: the epitome of fairness to humans and horses. He believes in the sport and the basis of our relationship is sharing the values he promotes in his horsemanship».

Con l’acquisto di Corbinian, che ora si gode la meritata pensione, è dunque iniziata per Sabina Cartossi la nuova carriera di proprietaria. «É così che abbiamo cominciato a conoscerci con Steve ed a costruire un rapporto che mi sento francamente di dire va ben oltre la pura professionalità. Steve non ti chiederà mai per principio di comprare un cavallo giovane per cifre esagerate. Insieme al mio compagno Gianluca Agustoni, che è stato a sua volta un cavaliere di alto livello, compriamo solo cavalli giovani come piace a lui. É una persona meravigliosa: l’emblema della correttezza con gli esseri umani e con i cavalli. Crede nello sport e le basi del nostro rapporto sono la condivisione dei valori che lui promuove nel suo essere cavaliere».

Il 2024 è l’anno olimpico e i due cavalli su cui conta Guerdat sono proprio Venard de Cerisy e Dynamix de Belhéme. «I cavalli di Steve godono sempre di lunghi periodi di riposo. Dopo Ginevra Venard è ancora al prato mentre Dynamix ha da poco ripreso a montarla e l'ha portata a fine febbraio in Spagna ma solo per lavorarla e riproporla con molta calma. La loro stagione inizierà più avanti, con primo evento importante a Windsor ai primi di maggio. I suoi cavalli sono tutti molto sereni».

Sabina Cartossi vive da vicino tutti i grandi appuntamenti e l’emozione del Campionato d’Europa l’ha ancora tutta sulla pelle.

«Steve in ogni concorso è ovviamente molto concentrato ma riesce a gestire perfettamente lo stress ed è sempre tranquillo. L’Europeo a Milano l’abbiamo vissuto quasi con incredulità. Lui usciva dal campo dicendo «Dynamix più le cose sono difficili più ti dimostra quanta classe e mezzi ha e quanta partecipazione mette impegnandosi al massimo. Percepisco chiaramente che lei è partecipe e che in gara si diverte». Il rapporto con noi proprietari anche durante i concorsi è magnifico forse perché essendo veramente gente di cavalli sappiamo mantenere una condotta appropriata. Vedere i cavalli in concorso la emoziona a dismisura e c’è un rito scaramantico è diventato d’obbligo nella routine. «Vado quasi sempre sulla tribuna kiss&cry ma non seguo mai i loro percorsi. Dopo che hanno superato l'ostacolo numero 1 chiudo gli occhi. C’è sempre qualcuno che con un ok mi porta a seguire il percorso salto dopo

Venard is still in the fields after Geneva, in Steve's centre in Sementina, and he has recently resumed riding Dynamix. He took her to Spain at the end of February, but only to work her and to very gently get her into shape. Their season will begin later, with the first important event at Windsor in early May. Sabina Cartossi eagerly participates in all the big events and she still feels the thrill of the European Championships.

«Steve is obviously very concentrated in every competition but he is perfectly able to manage stress and is always calm. We experienced the European Championships in Milan almost with disbelief. He used to come out of the arena saying “With Dynamix, the more difficult the competition is, the greater the class and means she shows you to have and how committed she is by giving it all. I clearly sense that she is participating and having fun all along”. The relationship with us, the owners, is magnificent even during the competitions, perhaps because we are real horse people and we know how to behave appropriately».

Seeing her horses competing is so exciting for her and she follows a superstitious ritual that has become a must for her. «I almost always go to the kiss & cry stand but I never watch them when they are jumping their courses. I close my eyes after they jump fence number 1. There is always someone who leads me with an OK to follow the course jump after jump. I open my eyes again before the last jump. When the horses come out I am always there waiting for them with a tuft of grass in my hand which I hand to the groom to give it to them. Sometimes, especially during indoor competitions, grass is not easy to find but I try hard and I have always succeeded».

salto. Li riapro solo all'ultimo. Quando i cavalli escono sono sempre lì ad aspettarli con un ciuffo di erba in mano che consegno alla groom perché glielo dia. A volte, nei concorsi indoor specialmente, non è facile trovarla ma mi impegno nel farlo e ci sono sempre riuscita».

Signora... del Sole

Di solito le bambine sognano il Principe Azzurro. «Io invece sognavo il cavallo del Principe». Bè, il desiderio di bimba è diventato realtà e Isabella Asti Bezzera è ormai Nostra Signora... del Sole.

Con il 2024 completa i quarant’anni da titolare di un allevamento ormai storico del galoppo italiano, la Razza del Sole appunto. E si avvicina ai cinquanta di matrimonio con Guido Bezzera, con il quale condivide la passione dei cavalli e delle corse in un modo particolare, decisamente singolare.

«Abbiamo cominciato insieme, nel 1985, con una società unica che comprendeva la Razza del Sole per l’allevamento e la Scuderia Blueberry per le corse. Però si discuteva troppo, a cominciare dalle scelta degli stalloni per le fattrici, ed era uno sfinimento. Così abbiamo separato Sole e Blueberry, facendone due società distinte: le mie fattrici sono quelle del Sole, le sue sono Blueberry, i puledri Sole che non vendo corrono in affitto alla Blueberry. Ognuno fa le sue scelte, magari ci scontriamo in pista, con una sana competizione, e che vinca il migliore! Lui complessivamente ha ottenuto risultati migliori, perché ha più fattrici e non vende i prodotti, ma va bene così».

Gli allevamenti in realtà sono due. Oltre a quello della Razza del Sole a Vinago di Mornago, non lontano da Milano («Si chiamava già così, quando l’abbiamo comprato: il nome mi piaceva, il sole è simbolo di vita e allegria, e così non l’ho cambiato. Ce lo segnalò Emilio Puricelli, grande cavaliere e nostro grande amico»), c’è l’Old Buckenham ad Attleborough, nel Norfolk, in Inghilterra («È la nostra base da quelle parti, per fattrici e puledri»).

I cavalli in allenamento («Blueberry è una scelta di Guido: stava mangiando dei mirtilli, a lui piacciono molto e trovò che suonasse bene per il nome della scuderia, come pure l’abbinamento di verde e blu per la giubba») sono quasi tutti in Italia, divisi tra Bruno Grizzetti e Stefano Botti, e solo qualcuno all’estero (da Marco Botti in Inghilterra e da Alessandro Botti in Francia, rispettivamente fratello e cugino di Stefano). «Siamo fedeli, ai nostri allenatori. Possono esserci periodi storti, che però capitano a tutti, e alla fine la ruota gira sempre.

Ha poco senso cambiare alle prime difficoltà, contano anche i rapporti personali che si sono consolidati nel tempo».

Tornando alla bambina e al cavallo del Principe Azzurro, da piccola Isabella chiedeva al padre di portarla al cinema per i film western, accontentandosi di vederli lanciati al galoppo sullo schermo. Il primo contatto con un pony avvenne ai giardini di Porta Venezia, nella sua Milano: «Avrò avuto 4 o 5 anni: mi misero in sella a Dolly per una foto-ricordo, io invece avrei voluto passeggiarci. Dopo aver stressato a lungo i miei genitori, a 11 anni ho iniziato a montare al Centro Ippico Lombardo, vicino

OUR LADY... OF THE SUN

Usually young girls dream of Prince Charming. «Instead, my dream was the Prince's horse». Well, the little girl's wish has come true and Isabella Asti Bezzera is now Our Lady... of the Sun. In 2024, she celebrates forty years as owner of the Razza del Sole stud that is by now a historical part of Italian thoroughbred racing. She is about to celebrate fifty years of marriage with Guido Bezzera, with whom she shares her passion for horses and racing in a special and decidedly unique way.

«We started out together in 1985 with a single company that included Razza del Sole for breeding and Scuderia Blueberry for racing. But we argued far too much, starting from the choice of the stallions for our mares, and it was exhausting. So, we separated Sole and Blueberry into two distinct entities: my mares belong to Razza del Sole, his mares to Blueberry, the unsold Razza del Sole foals are leased to Blueberry to race. Each of us is free to choose, maybe we race against each other on the racetrack in a healthy competition, and may the best win! He has obtained better results overall, because he has a higher number of mares and doesn't sell his horses, but that's OK».

There are actually two breeding farms. In addition to Razza del Sole in Vinago di Mornago, not far from Milan («It was already called like that when we bought it; I liked the name, the sun is a symbol of life and joy, and so I didn't change it. Emilio Puricelli, a great horseman and friend of ours, pointed it out to us»), there is Old Buckenham in Attleborough, Norfolk, England («It is our base there for brood mares and foals»).

The horses in training («The name Blueberry was chosen by Guido: he was eating blueberries, he likes them a lot and found it sounded good as the stable's name, as well as the combination of green and blue for the jacket») are almost all based in Italy, some trained by Bruno Grizzetti and others by Stefano Botti, and only a few are based abroad (trained by Marco Botti in England and Alessandro Botti in France, Stefano's brother and cousin respectively). «We are faithful to our trainers. There can be bad periods, but they happen to everyone, and in the end the wheel

always turns. It makes little sense to change at the first difficulties, the personal relationships that have been strengthened over time also count».

Returning to the little girl and to Prince Charming's horse, as a child Isabella used to ask her father to take her to the cinema to watch Western movies, happy to see the horses galloping on the screen.

Her first contact with a pony took place in the gardens of Porta Venezia, in her city, Milan: «I must have been 4 or 5 years old: they put me on Dolly's saddle for a souvenir photo, I wanted to ride it.

After having stressed my parents for a long time, at the age of 11 I started riding at Centro Ippico Lombardo, near the San Siro racecourse, and at 15 Dad gave me my first horse, all mine. I competed in show jumping until I was 55, when I realised it was getting harder and harder to compete against much younger opponents.

I had a second-degree licence, I also competed a lot abroad».

In her love life, galeotto was Circolo Ippico Lombardo. Guido too used to ride there, a member of a historical family of Italian industrialists. His grandfather Luigi patented the espresso machine in 1901, which was exhibited at the Milan International Fair in 1906, when, first Luigi and then Rosita, Guido’s father and mother, took over the management of the company. In 1961, at the tender age of 19, Guido was in charge of re-launching Bezzera company, especially by finding and conquering unknown markets. Guido's son Luca, the current CEO, has also played an important role in the company since 2001.

«But he has never wanted to have anything to do with horses», explains Isabella. «As a reaction to our boundless passion, he has always kept out of breeding and racing. But now, according to the law of retaliation, his daughter Maya is already crazy about horses at the age of 10. I would be happy if she carries on our racing business in the future».

Since 1985, the year of the first broodmare («Wodonga: we bought her after an experience with friends in Hallmark, a stable named after my first show jumping horse»), four successful decades have passed for the Bezzera family all over the world, as breeders and owners.

Some of the family jewels, or at least those not sold for budget reasons («If you want to invest, you have to sell and make ends meet»), happily spend their old age on the lawns of Vinago di Mornago: Alabastro is 31, Nordhal 25, Fair Nashwan 'just' 22. In the meantime, Isabella is busy with after fifth term as president of thoroughbred breeders (ANAC) her four terms from 2006 to 2017, and is overjoyed at the birth of Aria Importante's first foal, a colt by Kingman.

She is also raising yearlings destined for the 2024 sales. Who knows, they might do better in England than the 300,000 guineas paid by Godolphin in 2017 for a colt by Mia Diletta, or return to the top price in Italy after the four consecutive ones obtained from 2012 to 2015. Even though for Our Lady of the Sun, letting them go is always a pain.

Nell’amore, galeotto fu il Circolo Ippico Lombardo. Montava lì anche Guido, che rappresenta una famiglia storica dell’industria italiana. Il nonno Luigi nel 1901 brevettò la macchina del caffè espresso, esposta alla Fiera Internazionale di Milano nel 1906. Da allora alla direzione della ditta si sono avvicendati prima Luigi e poi Rosita, padre e madre di Guido che nel 1961, appena 19enne, si occupò del rilancio della Bezzera soprattutto con la scoperta e la conquista di mercati fino ad allora sconosciuti. Dal 2001 con Guido ha un ruolo importante in azienda anche il figlio Luca, attuale amministratore delegato. «Ma lui dei cavalli non ha mai voluto sapere – spiega Isabella – Come reazione alla nostra passione sconfinata, si è sempre tenuto fuori da allevamento e scuderia. Però adesso, per la legge del contrappasso, c’è sua figlia Maya che invece a 10 anni stravede già per i cavalli. Sarei felice se fosse lei in futuro a dare continuità alla nostra attività ippica».

Dal 1985, anno della prima fattrice («Wodonga: la comprammo dopo un’esperienza con amici nella Hallmark, scuderia che portava il nome del mio primo cavallo da concorso»), per i Bezzera sono trascorsi quattro decenni di successi in tutto il mondo, come allevatori e proprietari.

Alcuni dei gioielli di famiglia, o almeno quelli non sacrificati nel nome del bilancio («Se vuoi investire, devi vendere e far quadrare i conti»), si godono la vecchiaia sui prati di Vinago di Mornago: Alabastro ha 31 anni, Nordhal 25, Fair Nashwan “appena” 22. Nel frattempo Isabella, impegnata con il quinto mandato da presidente degli allevatori di galoppo (ANAC) dopo i quattro dal 2006 al 2017, è felicissima per la nascita del primo prodotto di Aria Importante, un maschio da Kingman. E intanto cresce i puledri destinati alle aste del 2024. Chissà che in Inghilterra non facciano meglio delle 300.000 ghinee pagate nel 2017 da Godolphin per un figlio di Mia Diletta o che in Italia tornino a realizzare il top price dopo i quattro consecutivi ottenuti dal 2012 al 2015. Anche se lasciarli, per Nostra Signora del Sole, è sempre una sofferenza.

Motori e cavalli, due grandi passioni

Dal Desmoquattro, il motore della svolta corsaiola della Ducati, ai Desmocavalli… Massimo Bordi, 75 anni, è l’ingegnere che ha tracciato la strada verso il successo per la Rossa a due ruote. Sì, proprio quella che nella MotoGP ha portato al titolo iridato Casey Stoner nel 2007 e Francesco “Pecco” Bagnaia nel 2022 e nel 2023 tra i piloti e cinque volte il marchio tra i costruttori.

Il Desmoquattro dei favolosi anni ‘80 ha lasciato il posto al Desmosedici, il motore che ha definitivamente portato la Ducati Corse da Borgo Panigale, Bologna, in cima al mondo. E Bordi, che nel frattempo è passato per altre importanti esperienze

ENGINES AND HORSES, TWO GREAT PASSIONS

From Desmoquattro, the engine of Ducati's racing turnaround, to Desmocavalli... The 75-year-old Massimo Bordi is the engineer who traced the road to success for the two-wheeled “Rossa”. Yes, the very one that brought to the MotoGP world title Casey Stoner in 2007 and Francesco "Pecco" Bagnaia in 2022 and 2023 among the riders and gave five victories for brand among the manufacturers.

The Desmoquattro of the fabulous 1980s gave way to Desmosedici, the engine that definitively took Ducati Corse from Borgo Panigale, Bologna, to the top of the world. And Bordi, who in the meantime has had other important work experiences,

continues as a consultant to collaborate with “private equity funds “ for the recovery and relaunching of companies, but above all, he manages to more concretely devote himself to his great passion, to horses, precisely, and in particular to sport and show jumping horses.

The Umbria (Bevagna)-born Massimo graduated in mechanical engineering from the University of Bologna in 1975, with a dissertation on the design of a four-valve cylinder head with desmodromic control for engines.

Before his employment with Ducati, his ties with Umbria often brought him back to his region. However, horses did not interest or intrigue him, and it was only out of pride that he once accepted the challenge from the brother of his then girlfriend. «I was 25 years old, and in order to avoid being teased, I took up the challenge and as soon as I was in the saddle I galloped away over a field full of stones. Well, I have never been off the saddle since then. In those days, I used to ride every time I came home; with the first salary, I had earned at Ducati, I bought a horse of my own. His name was Elcamo, and every day after work, I went to ride him just outside Bologna at a riding school where Agostino Barbieri, a professional photographer who had been encouraged by Mauro Checcoli to become an instructor, was based».

Work has always kept the engineer very busy: at Ducati until 2000 (he left as general manager after having also been technical director), as managing director of SAME Deutz-Fahr (agricultural tractors) in 2001, as vice-president of MV Agusta (motorbikes again) in 2010, and finally as managing director of Maschio Gaspardo (agricultural equipment) since 2015, always with important results in each of these companies. And always, Bordi has taken his horses with him in his different business locations.

Elcamo was followed by Malina («I took her when she was one year old and I raised her, together with my daughter»), Duello («Broken in by Gianni Govoni, that stayed with me until he was 29 years of age, the first one with which I jumped 1.40 metres, I even took him with me on holiday to the sea at Punta Ala») and Corneille («At that time, being in Varese for work, I lived in a house inside the riding school of Marco Biasia, the event rider»). Now there is Déjà vu («An eight-year-old Belgian who jumps

Umbro (è nato a Bevagna), Massimo nel 1975 si è laureato in ingegneria meccanica all’Università di Bologna sviluppando la sua tesi sul progetto di una testa di motore a quattro valvole per cilindro con comando desmodromico. Prima dell’assunzione in Ducati, il legame con l’Umbria lo riportava spesso nella sua regione. I cavalli però non lo interessavano e non lo incuriosivano, e fu solo per orgoglio che una volta assecondò il fratello della fidanzata dell’epoca.

«Avevo 25 anni, per sottrarmi alla presa in giro raccolsi la sfida e appena in sella mi lanciai anche al galoppo su un campo pieno di pietre. Bè, da allora non sono più sceso da cavallo. A quei tempi ero in sella ogni volta che tornavo dalle parti di casa, ma con il primo stipendio guadagnato in Ducati comprai un cavallo tutto mio. Si chiamava Elcamo e tutti i giorni dopo il lavoro andavo a montarlo appena fuori Bologna in un maneggio dove c’era Agostino Barbieri, un fotografo professionista, diventato istruttore sotto la spinta di Mauro Checcoli».

Il lavoro ha sempre impegnato molto l’ingegnere: fino al 2000 in Ducati (lasciata da direttore generale dopo essere stato anche direttore tecnico), poi dal 2001 a.d. di SAME Deutz-Fahr (trattori agricoli), dal 2010 vicepresidente di MV Agusta (di nuovo moto, quindi) e infine dal 2015 a.d. di Maschio Gaspardo (attrezzature agricole), con risultati sempre importanti in ognuna di queste aziende. E sempre, Bordi, si è accompagnato ai cavalli nei diversi cambi di sede.

Dopo Elcamo ci sono stati Malina («L’ho presa a un anno e l’ho tirata su io, anche con mia figlia»), Duello («Domato da Gianni Govoni, è rimasto con me fino all’età di 29 anni: è il primo con il quale ho saltato un metro e 40, me lo portavo dietro anche in vacanza al mare a Punta Ala») e ancora Corneille («In quel periodo, essendo a Varese per lavoro, vivevo in una casa all’interno del maneggio di Marco Biasia, il completista»). Adesso c’è Deja Vu («Una cavalla belga di 8 anni che salta splendidamente e che forse potremmo destinare alle gare, dopo che finora l’ho utilizzata solo io») e Bordi se la monta e se la coccola a Basiano.

Da un po’ è infatti questo il nuovo centro del suo mondo equestre: ha ritrovato l’istruttore Carmine Miceli e soprattutto ha… scoperto Francesco Turturiello e Linda Bratomi, il braccio e la mente di B&T Stables a Basiano. «I risultati parlano per Francesco, persona deliziosa, di grande empatia. Insieme sono proprietari di quelli che sono i cavalli più importanti di Turturiello: «Made In’t Ruytershof, grandissima valorizzazione di Francesco, è stata alla fine venduta, dopo aver resistito a tanti assalti.

L’Italia come squadra è rimasta fuori dall’Olimpiade di Parigi e allora abbiamo accettato l’offerta spagnola di Eduardo Alvarez Aznar, con il quale gareggerà ai Giochi. Il suo sacrificio però ci consentirà di contare su altri cavalli importanti.

È rimasto Quite Balou, con lui ci sono anche Quedira Dw e Quick Nek Eh: con questi tre Francesco disputerà tutta la seconda parte di stagione del Longines Global Champions Tour 2024».

Together they own Turturiello's most important horses: «Made In't Ruytershof, greatly enhanced by Francesco, was eventually sold, after having resisted so many attempts to buy her. Italy team was left out of the Paris Olympics and so we accepted the offer by the Spanish rider, Eduardo Alvarez Aznar, with whom she will compete at the Games. However, her painful sale will allow us to count on other important horses. Quite Balou has remained, together with Quedira Dw and Quick Nek Eh: Francesco will compete with them in the entire second part of the 2024 Longines Global Champions Tour season».

Riparte nel segno dei grandi appuntamenti

A Milano, dal 23 marzo, inizia la 136a stagione di galoppo all’Ippodromo Snai San Siro, struttura di proprietà di Snaitech, uno dei principali operatori in Italia nel settore del gioco legale, che fu inaugurata nel 1920 su progetto dell’architetto Paolo Vietti Violi e che ancor oggi resta l’unico ippodromo al mondo dichiarato ‘monumento di interesse nazionale’.

Per il 2024 ci saranno molte sorprese per il pubblico e le scopriamo con Lorenzo Stoppini, direttore della Business Unit Ippodromi Snai di Milano e di Montecatini Terme.

Dottor Stoppini inizia una nuova stagione di corse all'Ippodromo Snai San Siro. Quali sono le novità?

Partiamo dal lato prettamente sportivo con 55 giornate di corse di galoppo in calendario che iniziano dal 23 marzo e terminano il 30 novembre 2024, con le serali dal 6 giugno al 3 luglio, e poi la pausa estiva dal 4 luglio al 10 settembre.

Tra le giornate della stagione primavera-estate ci sono due appuntamenti da non perdere a giugno: domenica 9 con le Oaks d’Italia, la prova riservata alle cavalle purosangue di 3 anni giunta alla sua 115a edizione; e poi il Gran Premio di Milano, corsa aperta ai cavalli purosangue di 3 anni ed oltre che si disputerà domenica 23.

Entrambe verranno programmate nel preserale dando modo al pubblico di godersi un grande spettacolo ippico grazie all’impianto di illuminazione rinnovato con tecnologia a led di ultima generazione, e uno spettacolo a bordo pista con l’intrattenimento per tutte le età.

SNAI, THE 2024 SEASON STARTS AGAIN IN THE NAME OF GREAT EVENTS

The 136th thoroughbred racing season will begin on March 23 at the Snai San Siro Racecourse in Milan, a facility owned by Snaitech, one of the main gaming and betting operators in Italy. This racecourse, designed by the architect Paolo Vietti Violi, was inaugurated in 1920 and it is still the only racing facility in the world to be declared a “monument of national interest”. Many surprises are in store for the public in 2024, and we unveil them with Lorenzo Stoppini, Director of Snai's Racecourse Business Unit in Milan and Montecatini Terme.

Mr Stoppini, a new racing season begins at the Snai San Siro Racecourse. What are the novelties?

Let's start from the sheer sporting level with 55 racing days on the calendar starting on March 23 and ending on November 30, with evening races from June 6 to July 3, and then a summer break from July 4 to September 10. The spring-summer season features two appointments in June not to be missed: on Sunday 9 with the Italian Oaks, the race reserved to 3-year-old fillies now in its 115th edition; and then the Gran Premio di Milano, a race open to thoroughbred horses of 3 years of age and older that will be held on Sunday 23. Intrattenimento che, da qualche stagione a questa parte, coinvolge sempre di più gli spettatori e le famiglie.

Certo. In tutte le giornate di corse metteremo a disposizione dei servizi con maggiore attenzione ai dettagli: dalla ristorazione al bar, dall’aperitivo all’intrattenimento musicale dal vivo o con il dj-set. Vogliamo condividere la bellezza della nostra location con tutti i presenti, bambini compresi. I nuclei familiari potranno venire all’ippodromo per divertirsi, per assistere allo spettacolo delle corse, per scoprire un luogo in cui l’arte, la storia e la natura sono in simbiosi e, soprattutto, un luogo in cui rilassarsi prendendo un aperitivo o a pranzare o cenare con gli amici.

Insomma un ippodromo sempre più per le famiglie?

Anche per le famiglie, perché noi non dimentichiamo il calore e la passione che ci offre lo spettatore amante dei cavalli e delle corse. In questi ultimi anni i nostri sforzi sull’intrattenimento sono stati destinati a tutti, anche se in buona sostanza sono stati i bambini e le loro famiglie ad apprezzarli maggiormente.

Da tempo abbiamo stretto un rapporto di collaborazione con la Fondazione Francesca Rava NPH Italia, la onlus che aiuta i bambini in condizioni di disagio in Italia e nel mondo, che ci supporta con lo staff di animazione nell’area paddock in cui i giochi di gruppo, i laboratori creativi, la baby-dance e la postazione di trucca-bimbi, e poi gli spettacoli di intrattenimento e di magia, hanno raccolto molti consensi da parte dei genitori. Anche il ‘Battesimo della sella’ sui ponies, destinato ai bambini e ragazzi dai 3 ai 13 anni, con la collaborazione del CIL (Centro Ippico Lombardo) è stato molto gradito dal pubblico.

Una location, l’Ippodromo Snai San Siro, polifunzionale.

Il termine è corretto: polifunzionale. Aperto a qualsiasi attività e manifestazione, pubblica o privata, nelle giornate, e non, di corse. L’intrattenimento all’ippodromo è basilare, soprattutto quando sono in programma le giornate di galoppo.

Non tutti, infatti, sono appassionati di ippica ma allo stesso tempo avrebbero il desiderio di visitare un luogo diverso ed unico nel suo genere e soddisfare la ricerca di esperienze da vivere partecipando e da raccontare.

E per giunta a pochi passi dal centro di Milano! Trascorrere qualche ora in una location in cui è offerta della buona musica, degli spettacoli di intrattenimento per il pubblico, con la marching-band o le cheerleaders è un surplus che pochi a Milano possono vantare di avere.

Abbiamo deciso di non variare la tariffa del biglietto di accesso anche per il 2024. Quindi ticket unico a 5 euro con ingresso libero per i minori di 18 anni e per i portatori di handicap certificati e con un solo accompagnatore.

Da quest’anno sarà disponibile anche un ‘ticket speciale’ per chi volesse visitare le scuderie e vedere i cavalli da corsa durante la giornata di galoppo.

As soon as they cross the gates of Piazzale dello Sport, visitors find themselves in a botanical park with 70 species of plants and shrubs from all over the world, and can freely take the “#scoprisansiro” tour, a route organised in thematic islands that reveals the most evocative and historical places of the facility, including the Palazzina del Peso, the highlight facility on racing days and the Leonardo's Horse area featuring one of the largest equestrian statues in the world which has been towering there since 1999. Will admission to the Snai San Siro Racecourse have a cost?

We have decided not to change the admission fee also for 2024. So, there is a single ticket at 5 euro with free admission for under-18s and people with certified disabilities accompanied by one person. LA PRIMA PRODUZIONE ORIGINALE TELEVISIVA DI EPIQA

Il mitico Varenne, entrato nella hall of fame del trotto mondiale per le sue straordinarie imprese in pista, è il protagonista della toccante prima produzione originale televisiva di EPIQA, società del gruppo Snaitech ed emittente del Masaf, in cui “il Capitano” si racconta…

Un punto di vista inedito, quello del grande campione che, grazie alla voce dell’attore e doppiatore Luca Ward (la voce italiana di Russel Crowe nel film "Il gladiatore"), ripercorre i suoi successi e le sue sconfitte, dalla sua prima corsa a Bologna, il 4 aprile del 1998, quando prese il galoppo e fu squalificato, fino alla stagione 2001, quella della consacrazione tra i miti dell’ippica.

Un viaggio poetico nel passato, grazie alle telecronache delle sue imprese, e nel presente, quello della sua residenza attuale, presso la ‘Tenuta il Cigno‘, nel paese di Villanterio, in provincia di Pavia, dove è come sempre accudito dalla sua lad Daniela Zilli e dove sono state girate le riprese del documentario.

L'anteprima del documentario si è svolta nella iconica sede della Casa del Cinema di Villa Borghese, a Roma. «Sono orgogliosa del risultato finale – ha commentato Maria Chiara Polselli, amministratore delegato del canale dopo la presentazione dello speciale – questo è stato un lavoro corale di tutta la produzione di EPIQA per celebrare una eccellenza del patrimonio italiano».

The legendary Varenne, inducted in the world harness racing hall of fame for his extraordinary exploits on the track, is the protagonist of the touching first original television production by EPIQA, a company of the Snaitech Group and the broadcaster of the Ministry of Agriculture; in this documentary, "the Captain" tells his story... Passione per professione: si potrebbe facilmente titolare così lo stile di vita di Haidé Costa.

Il fascino dei cavalli e l’interesse per la fotografia hanno fatto breccia nel cuore della fotografa di Barcellona praticamente in contemporanea, già da quando poco più che bambina, presentava fiera al suo papà, grande amante della fotografia, i primi scatti realizzati con la macchina da lui ricevuta in regalo.

Col crescere la sfera della passioni della giovane spagnola si è allargata e accanto a cavalli e foto si sono fatti avanti lo studio e la giurisprudenza. Haidé Costa da tempo coniuga infatti con grande passione, in un quotidiano non certamente monotono, due professioni totalmente differenti.

«Sono impegnata part-time - spiega - metà settimana nella mia attività di avvocato e il resto in quella di fotografa. Il tempo è limitato e dunque a quest’ultima dedico anche molti week end. L’attività forense mi piace molto: ho insegnato all’università e per molti anni sono stata impegnata come giudice in tribunale. Quest’ultimo è un lavoro bello ma anche molto duro. Ora seguo esclusivamente l’attività dello studio e fortunatamente ho un fantastico associato e un team davvero speciale che mi consentono di trovare anche il giusto tempo da dedicare alla fotografia». Nessuna esitazione nella risposta di Haidé alla domanda “quale delle due professioni sente maggiormente vicina”. «Penso sicuramente che fotografare è per me una necessità. É qualcosa che ho tenuto da sempre con me ed è parte di ciò che sono io stessa, di come mi sento e di come vedo il mondo: una grande passione al pari di quella per i cavalli».

Haidé Costa ha studiato per diventare istruttrice di equitazione ed è particolarmente fiera del brevetto ottenuto dalla Federazione Ippica Spagnola. «La mia passione mi ha spinto a sviluppare in ogni modo le mie conoscenze sul mondo dei cavalli e dunque a frequentare il corso federale al quale mi sono iscritta quando avevo già compiuto quarant’anni».

Uno degli aspetti che maggiormente l’hanno interessata nel tempo è la doma dei

“Centaurides” si ispira alla mitologia e evidenza come il rapporto uomo-cavallo sia presente nella storia e nell’arte dai tempi antichi ai nostri giorni.

A tell-tale title for Haidé Costa's lifestyle.

The fascination with horses and the interest in photography have made their way into the heart of the Barcelona photographer practically at the same time, ever since she was little more than a child proudly presenting to her father first shots from the camera he had given her as a gift.

The young Spaniard's passions expanded overtime beyond horses and photos into education and law. In fact, Haidé Costa has been combining two totally different professions with great passion for some time now, in a daily routine that is not monotonous indeed.

«I am busy part-time,» she explains, «working as a lawyer for half of the week and the rest as a photographer. Time is limited and therefore I also devote many weekends to photography. I like the legal profession very much: I was a university professor and a court judge for many years. Being a judge is a nice job but also very hard. Now I exclusively work for my law firm and fortunately I have a fantastic associate and a very special team who also allow me to find time for photography». No hesitation in Haidé's answer to the question "which of the two professions she feels closest to". «I definitely think that photography is a necessity for me. It is something I have always kept with me and is part of who I am, how I feel and how I see the world: a great passion on a par with that for horses».

Haidé Costa studied to become a riding instructor and is particularly proud of the certificate she obtained from the Spanish Equestrian Federation. «My passion pushed me to develop my knowledge of the world of horses in every way, even enrolling in the federal course when I was already in my forties».

One of the aspects that has most interested her over time is the taming of horses in the wild, a subject to which she has also devoted several photographic projects.

cavalli in libertà, soggetti cui peraltro ha dedicato diversi progetti fotografici. «Ho fatto molta esperienza e amo questo metodo di lavoro che combina insieme la nostra e la loro psiche. Il concetto di connessione tra cavallo e uomo, il linguaggio del corpo e la libertà, hanno trovato spazio anche nel mio lavoro e ispirato in particolare la mostra “Centaurides” che sto preparando e che verrà ospitata dalla Galleria Pigment, a Barcellona, a partire dal prossimo mese di settembre». Il focus di quest’ultimo progetto è proprio il binomio uomo-cavallo e la loro relazione in un solo corpo e una sola mente. “Centaurides” si ispira alla mitologia e evidenza come il rapporto uomo-cavallo sia presente nella storia e nell’arte dai tempi antichi ai nostri giorni.

Metà uomini e metà cavalli, i centauri hanno il fascino della forza, bellezza, nobiltà di un animale che è al tempo stesso delicato o brutale nei suoi movimenti. Una metafora per l’umanità: l’eterna battaglia tra la civilizzazione e la barbarie.

La fotografia di semplici forme che mescolano uomini e equidi e che scoprono rapporti, sensazioni, contatti, e che ci portano alla memoria la straordinaria forza della loro libertà».

Il lavoro di Haidé Costa spazia tra studi fotografici e natura. «Utilizzo una macchina di formato medio, lenta, che richiede di scattare con molta attenzione, con il pieno controllo di luce e spazio. Amo lavorare all’aperto, in scenari già di per sè affascinanti, al fresco dei prati, cercando nella luce naturale il momento ideale per lo scatto perfetto. Fotografare in natura è una bella sfida perché la luce cambia costantemente. Sono sempre shooting difficili.

Mi piace però molto anche lavorare in studio. Lì, al contrario, è tutto controllato dalle tue scelte e la sfida è che queste siano quelle giuste, quelle necessarie per esprimere la creatività».

C’è sempre un cavallo del cuore nella vita di tutti gli “horse lovers” e Haidé Costa non fa eccezione: «La mia è stata Alcia, una bella femmina saura. Con lei ho condiviso più di dieci anni di indimenticabili galoppi!». E anche, come noi ci sentiamo autorizzati a pensare, sicuramente tanti splendidi scatti.

«I have acquired a lot of experience and I love this working method that combines our and their psyche.

The connection between horses and humans, body language and freedom, have also found a place in my work and inspired in particular the exhibition "Centaurides" that I am preparing and that will be hosted by the Pigment Gallery in Barcelona, starting from next September».

The focus of this latest project is precisely the human-horse combination and their relationship in one body and one mind. “Centaurides” takes its inspiration from mythology and highlights how the man-horse relationship has been present in history and art since ancient times.

Half-human and half-horse, centaurs charmingly feature the strength, beauty, nobility of an animal that is at the same time delicate or brutal in its movements.

A metaphor for humanity: the eternal battle between civilisation and barbarism. Photos of simple forms that mix humans and equids and that discover relationships, sensations, contacts, bringing back to us the extraordinary strength of their freedom».

Haidé Costa's work is created in photographic studios and in natural settings.

«I use a mid-sized, slow camera, which requires me to shoot very carefully, with a full control of light and space. I love working outdoors in already fascinating settings, in the cool atmosphere of meadows, looking for the ideal moment, for the perfect shot in natural light. Shooting in a natural environment is quite a challenge because the light changes constantly. These are always difficult shoots.

But I also really enjoy working in the studio where everything is controlled by your choices and the challenge is to make the right ones, the ones needed to express creativity».

There is always a cherished horse in the life of every 'horse lover' and Haidé Costa is no exception. «Mine was Alcia, a beautiful chestnut mare. I shared more than ten years of unforgettable gallops with her!» And certainly, many wonderful shots as we may be inclined to think.

"deus ex machina" in stivaleria

Molte delle fotografie raccolte dalla famiglia Parlanti negli album in bianco e nero degli anni ’60/’70 ritraggono bomber e centrocampisti che in quegli anni hanno scritto la storia delle due squadre che animano le tifoserie nella capitale ospiti da papà Gianni e mamma Aurelia nel loro negozio. In quelle immagini, che raccontano l’inizio della felice storia del calzaturificio frequentato da volti noti del mondo del calcio e del cinema, fa spesso capolino un ragazzino moro e paffutello.

Oggi, a distanza di quasi cinquant’anni, quel ragazzino è il general manager della Stivaleria Parlanti, una delle aziende leader nel mondo nella produzione di stivali. Daniele Parlanti, classe 1965, (primo lavoro in azienda a 18 anni la preparazione dei pacchi di spedizione) è il deus ex machina dell’azienda che gestisce ora insieme alla sorella Elisabetta e che nella produzione conserva inalterata l’artigianalità. «Mio padre ha iniziato a produrre e vendere scarpe, soprattutto fashion e alta moda su misura, negli anni ‘50. Vent’anni dopo abitavamo e avevamo l’azienda a Frascati. La passione per i cavalli ai Castelli Romani, si sa, è ben radicata e casualmente è venuto un cliente che aveva visto nell’ultima collezione presentata da mio padre, uno stivale da passeggio realizzato prendendo spunto dal classico stivale che in gara

A "DEUS EX MACHINA" IN THE BOOTS SHOP

Many of the photographs collected by the Parlanti family in the black and white albums of the 1960s and 1970s depict goal scorers and midfielders who wrote the history of the two teams that animated the fans in the capital hosted by father Gianni and mother Aurelia in their shop in those years. These images show the beginning of the happy story of the shoe factory chosen by famous faces from the football and cinema worlds; among some of them, a chubby, dark-haired boy often peeps out.

Today, almost fifty years later, that little boy is the general manager of Stivaleria Parlanti, one of the world's leading boot manufacturers.

Daniele Parlanti was born in 1965 and his first job in the company at the age of 18 was preparing shipping parcels; he is now the deus ex machina of the company that he runs together with his sister Elisabetta and that preserves the craftsmanship of its products. «My father started making and selling shoes, mainly fashion and haute couture made-to-measure shoes in the 1950s.

Twenty years later, we were living in Frascati and had our company there. As you know, the passion for horses is deep-rooted in Castelli Romani, and by chance, a customer came along who had seen in the last collection presented by my father walking boots made by taking inspiration from the classic boots riders used to wear with their red jackets in competitions, in black leather with a brown band.

Gli chiese di fargliene un paio per montare a cavallo dandogli un paio di indicazioni utili su che tipo di pellame utilizzare e sulle esigenze tecniche. Il primo prodotto della Stivaleria Parlanti è nato, molto semplicemente, così».

Il passa parola trai cavalieri e la presenza di Daniele ospite fisso in tutte le gare più importanti nel Lazio hanno fatto crescere in maniera esponenziale la notorietà della stivaleria che era ormai divenuta il core business dell’azienda.

Il momento del vero decollo è arrivato quando Parlanti ha iniziato a produrre gli stivali e gli stivaletti con le stringhe che, comodi da calzare e introdotti sul mercato italiano dalla stivaleria Ambrogio Bellazzi, hanno presto rappresentato un irrinunciabile “must have” per cavalieri e addetti ai lavori.

«Nel ‘92 abbiamo introdotto l’uso della cerniera. Anche lì un caso. Un cliente ci portò in riparazione un paio di stivali di Ferrini, il più celebre artigiano di Roma, con inserita una cerniera. L’aveva usata per recuperare uno stivale che era stato tagliato con una cesoia per liberare la gamba che il cavaliere si era malamente fratturato cadendo. Sempre parlando con gli amici cavalieri, e qui ricordo in particolare l’incoraggiamento dell’amico e cavaliere Raffaele Tagliamonte, decisi di metterla in produzione».

I cultori della tradizione storcevano il naso. «Quando avevo occasione di incontrare nei concorsi Piero e Raimondo d’Inzeo continuavano a ripetermi che dovevo proseguire la produzione tradizionale e io, stringendomi nelle spalle anche un po' dispiaciuto, rispondevo loro che questo era quel che mi chiedevano tutti i cavalieri.

«Mio padre ha iniziato producendo e vendendo scarpe, la svolta arrivò dalla richiesta di un cavaliere».

He asked him to make him a pair of riding boots, giving him a couple of useful hints on what kind of leather to use and the technical requirements. The first Stivaleria Parlanti product was quite simply born like that».

The word of mouth among riders and Daniele’s presence as a regular guest at all the most important competitions in Lazio made the fame of their boots grow exponentially; now, they have become the company's core business. The real takeoff came when Parlanti started producing comfortable boots and Jodhpur boots with laces introduced to the Italian market by the Ambrogio Bellazzi bootmaker, and they soon became a 'must-have' for riders and experts alike.

«In 1992, we introduced the use of zips. Here too by chance. A customer brought us for repair a pair of boots made by Ferrini, the most famous craftsman in Rome. He had a zip inserted in one boot that had been cut with a shear to free the rider’s badly fractured leg after a fall. Always talking with my horsy friends, and here I remember in particular the encouragement from my rider friend, Raffaele Tagliamonte, I decided to produce them».

Tradition champions raised their eyebrows. «When I had the opportunity to meet Piero and Raimondo d'Inzeo at competitions, they kept telling me that I had to go on with my traditional production and I, shrugging my shoulders even feeling a little sorry, told them that this was what all the riders were asking me for. Every Saturday and Sunday I was out at the competitions, studying the best tricks we could adopt to make an ideal product in terms of technique and comfort».

The business was always directly promoted around the equestrian competition fields and fairs and quickly expanded from Lazio to Italy and from there across the border. The Parlanti stand at fairs and competitions was always the busiest for orders and measurements. «We participated in the first Fieracavalli in 1990. All the greatest Italian and foreign riders came to us. There was no other way to advertise our products other than being there and I went everywhere in Italy and also abroad. My first trip abroad was to France, to Fontainebleau in 1992, and then I went everywhere: Paris, Wellington, Aachen, Monterrey, London, Helsinki, Oslo, Gotheborg, the Middle East, etc.

The stand featured a giant boot and a jodhpur boot that everyone remembers: the boot was 1.70 m tall with a foot size of 150 and was a coveted and unusual backdrop for souvenir photos, forerunners of today's selfies. Beautiful and also evidently coveted... It was in fact stolen in the mid-1990s. It happened one night in Piazza di Siena, Rome, and we never made it again».

Over time, following the trend of technical sportswear, boot products have steadily evolved and Daniele Parlanti has literally marked the path of this modernisation with his flair and vision in his work.

«Riders progressively asked me for softer and softer leathers. They favour them because they feel more contact with the saddle and the horse's side.

That's why I also started to include elastic materials.

Ogni sabato e domenica ero in giro per gare e studiavo quali migliori accorgimenti potessimo adottare per realizzare un prodotto che fosse ideale per tecnica e comodità».

Il business, sempre con una promozione diretta sui campi di gara e nelle fiere, è velocemente passato dal Lazio al territorio nazionale e da quest’ultimo oltre confine. Lo stand Parlanti in fiere e concorsi era sempre il più affollato per ordini e misure.

«Alla prima Fieracavalli abbiamo partecipato nel ’90. Da noi sono passati tutti i più grandi cavalieri italiani e stranieri. Non c’era altro modo che pubblicizzarsi se non in presenza e io sono stato ovunque in Italia e anche all’estero.

La prima trasferta oltre confine l’ho fatta in Francia nel ’92, a Fontainebleau e poi ho girato ovunque: Parigi, Wellington, Aquisgrana, Monterrey, Londra, Helsinki, Oslo, Goteborg, il Medio Oriente etc. Lo stand era caratterizzato dalla presenza di uno stivale e di uno stivaletto giganti che tutti ricordano: lo stivale era alto 1,70 con una misura di piede 150 ed era un ambito e insolito sfondo per le foto ricordo, antesignane dei selfie di oggi. Bello e anche evidentemente ambito… Ce lo hanno infatti rubato a metà degli anni ’90.

É successo una notte a Piazza di Siena, a Roma, e non lo abbiamo più rifatto».

Nel tempo i prodotti della stivaleria, seguendo il trend dell’evoluzione dell’abbigliamento tecnico sportivo, hanno subito continue evoluzioni e Daniele Parlanti con il suo estro e la sua visione nel lavoro ha letteralmente segnato la strada di questa modernizzazione.

«I cavalieri progressivamente mi hanno richiesto pellami sempre più morbidi e aderenti. Li privilegiano perché sentono maggiormente il contatto con la sella ed il costato del cavallo. É per questo che ho iniziato ad inserire anche l’elastico nei materiali. Altro cambiamento importate è stato quello della scarpa con la richiesta di comodità di un prodotto tecnico da poter indossare tutto il giorno.

Un amico che faceva solo ghette mi ha detto: «Perché non fai uno stivale comodo, sfoderato e morbido con l’elastico dietro?» E io l’ho studiato. Arrivando anche a sostituire le suole di cuoio con il monoblocco in gomma. Per realizzarlo ho dovuto sperimentare un prototipo con materiale fornito dal brand che è il gigante nella lavorazione della gomma: Michelin. É stata una vera rivoluzione.

Per due anni non ha sfondato ma poi è esploso anche lui e ora va per la maggiore». E la storia della Stivaleria Parlanti continua: nel segno delle novità e della tradizione.

«Il passaparola e gli stand espositivi ci hanno fatti conoscere, il boom con l'uso di stringhe e cerniere».

Another important change was that to the shoe to make this technical product more comfortable to wear all day long. A friend who only made riding gaiters said to me, «Why don't you make comfortable, unlined, soft boots with elastic at the back?» And I studied this possibility. I even went so far as to replace leather soles with one-piece rubber ones. In order to make them, I had to test a prototype with some material supplied by the leading rubber brand: Michelin. It was a real revolution.

For two years, these products had a sluggish growth but then there was a boom and now they are all the rage». And the story of Stivaleria Parlanti continues with a view to innovation and tradition.

CINQUE SECOLI DI STORIA I Lipizzani patrimonio dell'UNESCO

Sono otto le linee riconosciute di stalloni di razza lipizzana: sei le famiglie classiche ammesse (Conversano, Favory, Maestoso, Neapolitano, Pluto e Siglavy) e due quelle non classiche (Incitato, Tulipan).

L’UNESCO, agenzia ONU per l’Educazione, la Scienza e la Cultura, è chiamata a tutelare il patrimonio culturale del mondo intero, al fine di preservarlo nel tempo e trasmetterlo alle diverse generazioni. Dal 2003 è stata approntata una Convenzione per la Salvaguardia del patrimonio culturale immateriale ed è a questa che il rappresentante italiano permanente presso l’UNESCO, Pier Luigi Petrillo, unitamente a quelli di Austria, Bosnia Erzegovina, Croazia, Romania, Slovacchia, Slovenia e Ungheria, nel marzo 2020 ha presentato la candidatura de “La tradizione dell’allevamento dei Cavalli Lipizzani”.

L’iter di approvazione si è completato all’inizio di dicembre 2021 e così i Lipizzani sono diventati patrimonio dell’UNESCO, con il loro tipico mantello di peli bianchi su cute nera, la loro armonia, il loro fisico ben strutturato, robusto, poco precoce ma longevo, dal portamento elegante e superbo sia al trotto che al galoppo, molto simile all’Andaluso.

Si tratta di un riconoscimento prestigioso, in quanto l’allevamento lipizzano nel mondo dei cavalli è realmente un patrimonio degno di tutela, grazie a conoscenze e pratiche

tramandatesi in oltre cinque secoli di storia. Ovvero dall’anno 1580, quando cioé questa razza venne ufficialmente creata nella città di Lipizza, nell’odierna Slovenia, in particolare sui terreni che il Granduca Carlo II d’Asburgo, figlio del Re d’Austria e di Spagna, Ferdinando I, affittò dal Vescovo di Trieste.

Il Lipizzano verso il 1700 si separò e si distinse dall’originale razza spagnola, diffondendosi nei vari Paesi dell’Impero Austro-Ungarico. In Italia è arrivato tuttavia solo dopo la Prima Guerra Mondiale, esattamente il 17 luglio 1919, quando cioé 109 cavalli e una copia dei Libro Genealogico viennesi furono consegnati dall’Austria al Regno d’Italia nell’ambito dei risarcimenti di guerra imposti agli sconfitti.

Dopo la Seconda Guerra, e il loro trasferimento a Praga, solo la metà dei lipizzani italiani tornarono nel nostro paese, sistemati prima a Pinerolo e poi a Montelibretti. In quest’ultima località e nella vicina Monterotondo, nei dintorni di Roma, si trovano tuttora le scuderie lipizzane gestite dal Centro di Ricerca Zootecnia e Acquacoltura del CREA, che è il Consiglio per la Ricerca in agricoltura e l’analisi dell’Economia Agraria.

THE UNESCO HERITAGE LIPIZZAN HORSES

UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is called upon to protect the world's cultural heritage in order to preserve it over time and pass it on to future generations. A Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage was passed in 2003, and it is in the framework of this Convention that the Italian permanent representative to UNESCO, Pier Luigi Petrillo, together with those of Austria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Hungary, submitted the candidature of 'The Lipizzan Horse Breeding Traditions' in March 2020. The approval process was completed in early December 2021 and so Lipizzan horses are now part of the UNESCO World Heritage, with their typical coat of white hair on black skin, their harmony, their well-structured and robust conformation with its precocious but long-lived traits, their elegant and superb trot and canter gait, very similar to that of the Andalusian.

It is a prestigious recognition, as Lipizzaner breeding in the horse world is truly a heritage worthy of protection, thanks to the knowledge and practices handed down for over more than five centuries. That is to say since 1580, when this breed was officially created in the town of Lipica, in present-day Slovenia, specifically on the land that Grand Duke Charles II of Habsburg, son of the King of Austria and Spain, Ferdinand I, rented from the Bishop of Trieste. Around 1700, the Lipizzaner breed separated and distinguished itself from the original Spanish breed, spreading across the various countries of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. However, it arrived in Italy only after the First World War, exactly on July 17, 1919, when 109 horses and a copy of the Viennese Stud Books were handed over by Austria to the Kingdom of Italy as part of the war reparations imposed on the defeated. After the Second War, and their transfer to Prague, only half of the Italian Lipizzaners returned to Italy; they were first settled in Pinerolo and then in Montelibretti.

Montelibretti, nearby Monterotondo and Rome, hosts the Lipizzaner stables run by the Centre for Livestock and Aquaculture Research of CREA, the Council for Agricultural Research and Analysis of Agricultural Economics.

Sono cavalli protagonisti anche nell’ambito sportivo.

There are currently 403 Italian Lipizzaners, raised by 164 breeders in line with the studbook kept by ANAREAI (Associazione Nazionale Allevatori Razze Equine e Asinine Italiane - National Association of Italian Equine and Asinine Breeders) in compliance with the Ministerial Decree issued in December 2021 which defined the genetic improvement program of the Lipizzaner horse. There are eight recognised lines of Lipizzaner stallions: six are the admitted classic families (Conversano, Favory, Maestoso, Neapolitano, Pluto and Siglavy) and two are the non-classic ones (Incitato, Tulipan). Among these, the Conversano and Neapolitano lines are of clear Italian descent, as their names clearly indicate.

Lipizzaners are also protagonists in the sporting scene, in particular they are successfully used in the driving discipline. This was also the case at the 2022 World Driving Championships at Pratoni del Vivaro, with the Hungarians Ferenc Galbacs jr. and Istvan Vaczi, the Czech Jiri Nesvacil jr. and the Romanian Gergo Rakoczi who fielded four-in-hands made up entirely of Lipizzaners, some of whom out of the Conversano and Neapolitano lines.

È accaduto così pure in occasione dei Mondiali di Attacchi 2022 ai Pratoni del Vivaro, con gli ungheresi Ferenc Galbacs jr. e Istvan Vaczi, il ceco Jiri Nesvacil jr. e il romeno Gergo Rakoczi che hanno schierato tiri a quattro composti appunto interamente da lipizzani, alcuni dei quali rappresentanti delle linee di Conversano e Neapolitano.

Cartoline da sogno nel segno del polo

La cornice del deserto arabo di AlUla con le sue brune montagne incantate che punteggiano la sabbia dorata e accanto quella del lago ghiacciato di St. Moritz con sfondo le imponenti vette innevate.

Ocra e bianco, sabbia e neve, tanto caldo e tanto freddo.Nel giro di una settimana, a fine gennaio, il grande circus dei polo players ha fatto tappa in due location di bellezza scioccante con tornei alternativi ai tradizionali appuntamenti sugli sconfinati terreni di gara in erba.

Venticinque gradi per la quarta edizione del Richard Mille AlUla Desert Polo, in quella che è diventata la destinazione più gettonata del Medio Oriente per organizzazione di eventi equestri e che si prepara a veder nascere in pieno deserto una vera e propria città del cavallo.

Temperature non propriamente in tema con l’inverno in Engadina per la Snow Polo World Cup, ma pur sempre al di sotto dello zero, per l’appuntamento cult del polo su neve, giunto quest’anno alla sua trentanovesima edizione.

Come stretta connessione tra i due appuntamenti la presenza di polo players decisamente top, eleganza e stravaganza a braccetto nel parterre, accoglienza a sei stelle per ospiti vip in arrivo da tutto il mondo.

Ad AlUla sono arrivati otto polo team, il doppio rispetto al 2023, e il numero 1 del mondo, Adolfo Cambiaso, come sempre è stato impegnato oltre che in campo (la sua squadra, neanche a dirlo, ha alzato il trofeo a fine torneo con i colori di Team Saudia) anche nel ruolo di organizzatore.

Il patron di La Dolfina, riconosciuto come l’icona del campione di questa affascinante disciplina è ormai anche in Arabia Saudita Mr.Polo.

Nel 2020, anno di esordio del polo ad AlUla, aveva giocato con cavalli locali messi a disposizione ma ora, dopo 4 anni e la vendita di quaranta dei suoi cavalli in loco ha potuto scendere in campo con i prodotti del suo allevamento ed il profilo di gioco ha raggiunto ottimi livellli. Ad AlUla ha portato anche tanti amici professionisti di rango come Pablo McDonought, Alejandro Novillo Astrada o Nacho Figueras, quest’ultimo testimonial di Ralph Lauren, e i suoi rampolli Poroto e Mia che stanno seguendo con successo le orme paterne.

Il polo piace ai sauditi e cresce a grandi passi. La RCU (Royal Commission of AlUla), sempre con “Adolfito” capofila, ha infatti previsto, sul modello di quanto fatto per

Ochre and white, sand and snow, so hot and so cold.

In just a week at the end of January, the great circus of polo players stopped in two shockingly beautiful locations to play in a different setting with respect to the boundless grass playing fields. Twenty-five degrees for the fourth edition of the Richard Mille AlUla Desert Polo, by now the most popular destination in the Middle East for equestrian events, set to host a veritable horse city in the middle of the desert.

Temperatures not exactly typical of winter in Engadin for the Snow Polo World Cup, but still below zero for the snow polo cult event, now in its thirty-ninth edition. The link between the two events is the presence of the very top polo players, elegance and extravagance, hand in hand in the parterre, and a six-star reception for VIP guests arriving from all over the world.

Eight polo teams arrived in AlUla, twice as many as in 2023; the world number 1, Adolfo Cambiaso, was busy, as always, not only on the field (needless to say, his team raised the trophy at the end of the tournament with the Saudia Team colours) but also in his role as organiser.

The patron of La Dolfina, recognised as the champion icon of this fascinating discipline, is now also Mr Polo in Saudi Arabia. In 2020, the year polo made its debut in AlUla, he had played with local horses made available to him; but now, after four years and the sale of forty of his horses locally, he has been able to compete with the offspring of his own breeding and the performance in the field has reached excellent levels. He has also brought to AlUla many of his high-ranking professional friends such as Pablo McDonought, Alejandro Novillo Astrada or Nacho Figueras, the latter a testimonial for Ralph Lauren, and his scions Poroto and Mia, who are successfully following in their father's footsteps.

l’Endurance con Gianluca Laliscia, la creazione di una vera e propria “Academy” che possa formare i giocatori locali attraverso l’insegnamento dei migliori al mondo, Trai protagonisti del Richard Mille AlUla Desert Polo c’è anche qualcuno che ha potuto gustarsi entrambe le esperienze e raggiungere St. Moritz direttamente da AlUla. É il caso di Melissa Ganzi e del suo forte compagno di squadra argentino (+7 goal di handicap), Alejandro Novillo Astrada.

Lady Ganzi è una vera istituzione nel mondo del polo a stelle e strisce che la vede impegnata non solo come giocatrice ma anche come imprenditrice, organizzatrice, proprietaria di club e anche sostenitrice di importanti iniziative di promozione e beneficenza per questo sport.

Sino a quest’anno vantava di essere stata la prima e unica donna aver messo, sempre con la collaborazione del fedele Novillo Astrada, la propria firma nell’albo d’oro della Snow Polo World Cup di St. Moritz. Il primato, guadagnato nel 2019, glielo ha sfilato in chiusura di torneo la compatriota Lidia Gaus che, alla guida del team Mackage, con un solo goal di vantaggio, si è aggiudicata la vittoria nella finale contro il Team The Kusmacht Practice, agli ordini del patron brasiliano Eduardo Greghi. Il clima caldo dell’inverno 2024 non ha purtroppo consentito la formazione di ghiaccio ideale del lago (40 centimetri) e garantito quindi una ideale superficie di gioco. Questa circostanza ha costretto Reto Gaudenzi, lo storico direttore dell’organizzazione, ad optare per la formula di gioco dei rigori anziché dei quattro tradizionali chukker. Lo spettacolo è stato comunque garantito e lo straordinario numero di accessi (25.000 nelle quattro giornate) ha confermato ancora una volta che l’appuntamento su neve in Engadina è insieme all’Abierto di Buenos Aires la più bella cartolina del polo nel mondo.

Lady Ganzi is a true icon in the star and stripe polo world, where she is involved not only as a player but also as entrepreneur, organiser, club owner and also supporter of important promotional and charitable initiatives for the sport.

Until this year, she had retained the record obtained in 2019 when she had become the first and only woman to have put her signature on the roll of honour of the Snow Polo World Cup in St. Moritz with the collaboration of her faithful Novillo Astrada. She had to relinquish her record at the end of the tournament to her compatriot, Lidia Gaus, who, at the Mackage Team helm won the final against the Kusmacht Ptactice Team with a one-goal lead, under the supervision of the Brazilian patron, Eduardo Greghi.

Unfortunately, the warm weather in the winter of 2024 did not allow the lake to fully freeze over (40 centimetres) and thus ensure an ideal playing surface.

This circumstance forced Reto Gaudenzi, the longstanding event director, to opt for the penalty game formula instead of the traditional four chukkers. The show was nonetheless guaranteed and the extraordinary number of spectators (25,000 over four days) confirmed once again that the snow event in Engadin is the most beautiful polo postcard in the world, together with the Abierto in Buenos Aires.

Il Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride è molto più di un semplice raduno di motociclisti. Dressage a cinque stelle

Jiva Hill Stables, il centro ippico del celebre e omonimo Luxury Resort sorto nel 2005 e specializzato per la disciplina del dressage, si è guadagnato un posto di rilievo nel panorama degli sport equestri con l’organizzazione di concorsi internazionali di massima levatura.

Siamo in Francia, a Le-Crozet, in un’area verde di 50 ettari, ad appena 10 chilometri dall’aeroporto di Ginevra e dal PalExpo, ma anche dal lago Lemano sul quale si estende la città elvetica. Lo scenario è quello davvero splendido della Riserva Naturale Nazionale dell’Alto Jura con vista sul suo massiccio e sul maestoso Monte Bianco.

Qui il progetto Jiva Hill ha trasformato un terreno agricolo con una posizione eccezionale in un luogo paradisiaco che offre il meglio ai suoi ospiti. Un resort 5 stelle si rivela come una autentica oasi di tranquillità, lusso, riservatezza e discrezione ma anche come una location privilegiata, nella quale è possibile dedicarsi a molteplici attività sportive e dove i cavalli hanno un posto speciale.

Cassandre Allainguillaume, direttrice dei concorsi di Jiva Hill Stables, ha tutte le ragioni per essere molto fiera delle attività in essere e della sempre progressiva crescita del programma sportivo del centro. «Abbiamo per la prima volta ritrovato Jiva Hill nel calendario della FEI con gare internazionali nel 2017. Nonostante gli anni difficili della pandemia abbiamo sempre lavorato per arrivare a traguardi più qualificati.

Nel 2023 abbiamo fatto il primo concorso internazionale 5 stelle con la soddisfazione di un grande successo e una partecipazione decisamente qualificata. É stato necessario aprire ad un numero di cavalieri superiore a quello previsto, arrivando a 25 iscritti. L’ottimo riscontro ci ha molto gratificato. Quest’anno l’appuntamento sarà riproposto su cinque giornate, dal 28 agosto al 1° settembre, tre settimane dopo i Giochi Olimpici di Parigi».

L’impianto è magnifico dal punto di vista delle infrastrutture ma certamente l’ospitalità che può garantire un resort come Jiva Hill è un plus che nessun altro centro può offrire. «Il commento che si sente fare dai concorrenti – evidenzia la direttrice sorridendo - è che “gareggiare qui è come passare una settimana di belle vacanze”. L’atmosfera in effetti è molto diversa da quella dei tradizionali contesti. La ricerca di un continuo miglioramento copre ogni tipo di servizio: per i cavalieri, i groom e, ovviamente i cavalli.

Ci sono grandi nomi del dressage internazionale che gareggiano a Jiva Hill.

«Quando negli ordini di partenza dei nostri concorsi possiamo trovare i nomi di Jessica von Bredow-Werndl, Mathias Alexander Rath e Dorothee Schneider in rappresentanza della Germania, o di Morgan Barbacon-Mestre, uno dei punti di forza della squadra francese o ancora dello svedese Patrick Kittel, è davvero un risultato importante per un comitato organizzatore».

I concorsi di dressage non sono però la sola attività che ha messo Jiva Hill Stables sotto i riflettori. «Lo scorso dicembre – prosegue Allainguillaume – abbiamo ospitato nel maneggio coperto una vendita all’asta per cavalli da salto ostacoli molto partecipata. Nel programma 2024 ne metteremo in calendario altre ed una con la collaborazione di Mathias Alexander Rath, destinata in particolare ai cavalli di dressage.

I nuovi impianti realizzati nel 2023 ci consentiranno di dedicarci a nuovi progetti.

Il 2024 sarà dunque un anno molto impegnativo: ci prepariamo a viverlo con grande entusiasmo». Buon lavoro Jiva Hill Stables!

FIVE STARS FOR DRESSAGE

Jiva Hill Stables, the equestrian centre of the famous same-named Luxury Resort established in 2005 and specialised in the discipline of dressage, has earned a prominent place on the equestrian sports scene by organising international competitions at the highest level.

We are in France in Le-Crozet, a 50-hectare green area just 10 kilometres from the Geneva airport and PalExpo, but also from Lake Geneva around which the Swiss city extends. The setting is the truly splendid Haut Jura National Nature Reserve with a view of its massif and the majestic Mont Blanc.

Here, the Jiva Hill project has transformed a piece of farmland with an exceptional location into a heavenly place that offers the best to its guests: a 5-star resort that is an authentic oasis of tranquillity, luxury, privacy and discretion, but also a privileged venue for many sporting activities and where horses have a special place.

Cassandre Allainguillaume, the director of competitions at Jiva Hill Stables, has every reason to be very proud of the activities in place and of the ever-growing sports program at the centre. «We included Jiva Hill in the FEI calendar with international competitions for the first time in 2017. Despite the difficult years of the pandemic, we have always worked towards more qualified goals. In 2023, we organised the first international 5-star competition, which was very successful and with a definitely qualified participation. It was necessary to open it up to a larger number of riders than planned, reaching 25 entries. Their many excellent feedback was very gratifying. This year, the event will unfold over five days, from August 28 to September 1, three weeks after the Paris Olympic Games».

The facility is magnificent in terms of infrastructure, but certainly the hospitality that a resort like Jiva Hill can provide is a plus that no other centre can offer. «The comment you hear from rider is that “competing here is like spending a nice week's holiday» says the director with a smile. The setting is indeed very different from that of traditional venues. The quest for continuous improvement spreads across all kinds of services for riders, grooms and horses, of course.

There are big names in the international dressage scene who have competed at Jiva Hill. «When the starting order of our competitions features riders such as Jessica von Bredow-Werndl, Mathias Alexander Rath and Dorothee Schneider representing Germany, or Morgan Barbacon-Mestre, one of the strong competitors of the French team, or the Swedish rider Patrick Kittel, it is truly a major achievement for an organising committee».

However, dressage competitions are not the only activity that has put Jiva Hill Stables in the spotlight. «Last December, -Allainguillaume continues- we hosted a well-attended auction for show jumping horses in the indoor riding hall.

In the 2024, we will put more of these on the calendar, one with the collaboration of Mathias Alexander Rath, especially for dressage horses. New facilities built in 2023 will allow us to launch new projects. 2024 will therefore be a challenging year, we are enthusiastically looking forward to it».
