Visual Narratives A Story Untold OUIL405 – Alice Garrard
When I went home for Christmas, I had moved to a new house. In this new village I came across a castle situated five minutes from my house, hidden and tucked away by hundreds of trees it. Curious as to what the history and story behind it I decided to do some investigating. Recently sold to its new owner for 20million the castle is known as one of the romantic castles in England, due to being so secluded and the lake being shaped into a heart. I later found out from a local the story behind the lake.
Legend has it it that that former owner from around 1825 Mr. Hussey-Hunt fell in love with a women, and decided to celebrate his marriage by building a heart shaped lake. Not long after his wife fell ill and shortly passed away, in his despair he built a teardrop lake alongside the heart. Inspired by this story I felt this would be a perfect narrative for my picture book; I wanted to

Artist research – Lucy Driscoll I came across Driscoll’s work when exploring different collage approaches, I fell in love with the simplicity of her work and how she's used mixed media of collage creating depth and atmosphere. She’s inspired me to use textured images to enable detail and layers.
Liesl Pfeffer After deciding I wanted to use textured paper to create my collages I came across pfeffer, his use of hard angles and shape with texture creates such interesting images yet at the same time so simple. This is definitely a style that I want to experiment with.
Here I have been playing around with different textures, and started constructing some of the figures for my book. Below I have also tried using emulsion printing to create an external texture.
A few final ideas
Format, Layout & Structure I have decided to make my picture book A5, I feel if the book was any bigger then the images may distort and use of negative space around them would become too big. I have now recently decided that I want to incorporate some text, below you can see some of the styles I have been practicing, I would preferably like to write the text myself then scan it in, however it all depends on whether I get the collages done on time. I have also included the use of of symbols instead of just making figures, I feel it creates a better flow of the love story. As seen below this is a near to finished rough of my storyboard.
To the right is the final hand drawn text by myself for the book, I used such a scripted text to enforce the romance of the book, although it took a long time I’m happy with the results. On the right is a few of my final collages for the picture book, the color has come out darker from the scanner, however I will be putting all my images onto Photoshop to match the coloring and size.
