Welcome! My name is Alice Fang and I am a junior in Architecture, minoring in Business at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I was born and raised in Sao Paulo, Brazil. My love for Architecture started at a really young age. Favelas are slums in Brazilian urban areas where the human right of health and well-being is certainly not achieved. The image of favelas has always stuck in my mind growing up in Sao Paulo. Therefore, creating a place for people worth living, whose human rights have been denied, has always been one of my life goals. Initially, I moved from Brazil to study Actuarial Sciences, following my parents’ recommendation and my interest in sciences. However, I soon realized that these were not enough reasons for me to pursue a career as an actuary. What I really want is to impact people’s lives, develop my art, creativity, and fully dive into my passion for invention. Therefore, I made one of the most important decisions in my academic life during the second semester of my sophomore year – to deviate from what my parents want for me, and decided to change my career path, pursuing my dream of becoming an Architect.

Memories of a Traveler
“To wander is to be alive” – Roman Payne.
WANDERING PATHS PROMPT Kickapoo State Recreation receives one million visitors every year to take advantage of the scenery and outdoor activities the park has to offer. The park currently does not have any permanent structures for overnight camping and seeks long-stay opportunities for park visitors.
APPROACH Nowadays, people spend their time in a stressful, and sedentary lifestyle. The goal of this project is to provide a relaxing and healthy experience to visitors by providing a space where they can spend time in nature. With this concept in mind, making the visitor feel immersed in nature is essential to achieve this experience, which was captured in the language of the buildings that mimics the trees. This language unifies the complex where sitting surface becomes a sleeping surface becomes an eating surface becomes a walking surface. This walking path successfully induces people to spend more time in nature due to its nonlinear shape. The path leads to a bridge that not only serves as a connector of private-public space, but it also allows the visitor to stand at a unique spot to enjoy the breathtaking landscape of the park. Finally, the meeting room and the fire pit are where people gather as a community, which symbolizes “the heart of the camping.

THEATRON
PROMPT The proposal for Theatron is a space where the Champaign farmer’s market can be held on the weekends and another program can also be held at the same space on other days. After some research, the citizens of Champaign feel the lack of an icon for the town, a place where they can meet, relate, and feel the sense of pride and ownership. The goal of the Theatron is to create a space where everyone from diverse background can gather and feel included.
INSPIRATION The inspiration for Theatron is the amphitheater from the ancient Greeks. The shape of the amphitheater creates an interesting change in the flat topography of downtown Champaign.

THE LYRE HOUSE
PROMPT From previous exercises of analysis of lightness vs heavyness, students were asked to choose one of the languages and translate it into a 800sft dwelling. The Lyre House is an expression of lightness. It is private house in Miami for a couple who has a very active lifestyle, which is reigned by 3 aspects: Health, work, and fun.

DRAPPUS
PROMPT Abstract Spatial Construct: Students need to investigate form and space through digital and physical modelling. The project need to use elemental architectural components, such as lines, planes, and volumes, to create multi-level habitable spaces. The students also are required to think about how circulation, enclosures, and semi-enclosures can leverage conceptual ideas about space and form.

COLORS OF IMPRESSIONISM
ABOUT THE PROJECT The series of paintings are an exploration of the of the impressionism style based on Claude’s Monet’s drawings and how the colors influence the paitings to create a certain feeling to the viewer. The exploration also include the fine line between tradition technique and spontaneaty in the strokes. Painting requires notions similar to Architecture, such as color composition and background/mi-ground/front-ground.

MEMORIES OF A TRAVELERVV
ABOUT THE PROJECT Traveling has always been a passion of mine. It allows me to explore new cities and their culture. It improves me as an architect by exposing me to rich diversity of architecture and its impact. Memories of a Traveler is a narrative of remarkable memories from my travels through sketching, drawing and photographs. For this porfolio, it was selected cities in Brazil and in Europe.
