STORY WRITING

The Interview From Hell EVIL TAKES MANY FORMS

The apocalypse looms and a board of managers from Hell Incorporated have been tasked to find Hell’s most evil demon. Will they find the agent of armageddon they need,or will the incompetance of the applicants bring out the demon in the interviewers?

LEONARD DAMIENS Leonard Damiens is 38 demon years old (380,000 human years). He is the Manager in the Department of Spiritual Recruitment and Demonic Promotions at Hell Inc. He is the model of a modern demon who always makes sure he is sharply dressed. However, the many years of apathy, disillusionment and stress over his position at Hell Inc. has made Leonard a morose and dolorous demon. His humour these days takes the form of cynical sarcasm. It’s hard to say if he’d consider his comments witty. He just sees a mean comment as a normal interaction. Now he works with inadequate and witless colleagues. His anxiety and stress have turned him into a shadow of his former demonic self. A permanent personal hell is what Leonard Damiens must now suffer. He and his board of recruitment agents must conduct interviews to a seemingly constant horde of spirits and demons, of whom only seem to get exponentially less evil and more annoying every year. Perhaps humans don’t need demons anymore? Is the world becoming a better place? Or are the mortals doing a pretty good job at being evil all by themselves?

OHLMEC SOULSTEALER Ohlmec Soulstealer is 45 demon years old (450,000 human years). He is the Assistant Manager at the Department of Spiritual Recruitment and Demonic Promotions at Hell Inc. Unlike his more modern-adjusted peers, Ohlmec is a classic demon. He’d be far more comfortable in a torturous dungeon than an office cubicle, but Hell Inc. is moving with the 21st century and so must he if he wants to hold down a job.  Ohlmec is by no means a wordsmith, as his English is rather broken, (communication is more of a mortal thing anyway) but his hands-on, brutal practicality makes up for his limited communication skills. Sometimes his natural instinct for murderous carnage can get the better of him and this instinct has been known to cause minor disruptions in the workplace. His higher-ups have put him on a mandatory prescription of LRM (LiveRat Mutilation) therapy in order to subside his primal rage.

LILITH LUCILLE Lilith Lucille is just a few years off retirement, at the age of 59 demon years (590,000 human years), don’t let her age fool you though, she’s incredibly naive and generally just a bit simple. Her innocence is incredibly uncharacteristic of an average demon, to the point where one must doubt if she’s even got a shred of evil in her? This probably explains why she’s never really moved up the ranks at Hell Inc. and has remained a recruitment officer her entire life. Her innate kindness and blissful ignorance makes her a pretty awful demon, and even worse at scouting for new demons to be employed by Hell Inc, which is a constant nuisance for her managers. They would fire her but at this point it’s just easier to let her carry on with her job until she retires in another couple hundred human years.

SUCKLEBERRY SUGARPIE Suckleberry is 16 demon years old (16,000 human years). She loves skipping, candy and causing mischief. Do not be mistaken by the innocent and unassuming appearance of Suckleberry; a lot more lies under this ball of fluff than meets the eye. She is a candidate for the new job opening into the first circle of hell. Although she may not have much previous experience, her references are sure to blow away the board members. There’s a lot of potential in this one‌perhaps too much.

Employee Psychological Review [conducted by Dr. Brainbreaker]

Employee Psychological Review [conducted by Dr. Brainbreaker]

At the start of the review Mr. Damiens showed an uninterested and apathetic composure, not engaging in any direct conversation or eye contact when asked about his working environment.

At the start of the review Mr. Soulstealer showed positive feedback by dismembering and consuming one of the mortals that the Practice had deliberately disguised as a demonic psychiatrist.

Participation in the peer review was minimal. When asked about his coworkers on the board for Spiritual Recruitment and Demonic Promotions, Mr. Damiens’ answers were scurrilous and uncivil towards his peers. In what is assumed to have been a clerical error, there was no evidence or record of an S.E.A (specialisedevil-ability). When questioned about this, Mr. Damiens became irritable and stubborn to answer. He further questioned the legitimacy of this Practice. Standard practices at Hell Inc. require all heads of department to provide an honest evaluation of the executive management. Mr. Damiens displayed high levels of stressrelated anxiety, when questioned

about his superiors. His response to one of the questions could possibly be the cause of his change in demeanor. When asked: “Do you believe in the company ethos at Hell Inc?” he responded: “In an age where less and less humans believe in Hell, why should I?” before returning to impertinent comments about the legitimacy of this Practice. These disturbing answers and behaviours show signs that Mr. Damiens is quite possibly on the verge of a demonic breakdown. ITFWD (Independent Thought and Free Will Disorder) is a possible prognosis. This Practice recommends that an undisclosed investigation into the department should be carried out, with the assessment of Mr. Damiens’ management capabilities and demonic sanity being a primary focus.

Being an ancient demon, conceived and birthed by way sorcery, Mr. Soulstealer’s intellect and communication skills are lower than average. It was encouraging to see that despite his disabilities, Mr. Soulstealer’s traditional and practical approach to demonic behaviour still enables him to differentiate between mortals & demons and more importantly, function as an assistant manager. Participation in the peer review was minimal. When asked about his co-workers on the board for Spiritual Recruitment and Demonic Promotions, Mr. Soulstealer’s answers were vulgar and obscene. Alarmingly, some of his comments, although vile, did not appear to have the same levels of conviction as others. The inconsistency of his ultra violent vows of death

towards his fellow board member, Mrs. Lucille, were concerning, as they left suspicions of dishonesty. At the mention of his manager, Mr. Soulstealer returned to his previous state of blood-thirsty rage. Although Mr. Soulstealer appears to be a good judge of demonic character, (with his S.E.A being the detection and destruction of mortal beings). Some further tests have shown that he may be prone to mortal-like fears, this is unsuitable for a demon of his position and needs to be investigated further. However any attempts to do so thus far have resulted in more fatalities at the Practice. This Practice recommends that Mr. Soulstealer be obliged to undertake LRM (Live-Rat Mutilation) therapy in order to subside his primal rage and investigate his mortal phobias further.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

Employee number: 0999 Name: Lilith Lucille Gender: Female Date of death: 25th March 586,982 BC Employee Psychological Review [conducted by Dr. Brainbreaker] Mrs. Lucille has caused concern in this practice by the fact that she is less than a year from retirement and there appears to have been no previous records of the Practice ever conducting a psychological review of her. Unfortunately, as the practice tried to make up for many years of lost analysis, it appeared that Mrs. Lucille was perhaps the worst psychological case at Hell Inc. Participation in the peer review was met with cooperation and kindness. When asked about her co-workers on the board for Spiritual Recruitment and Demonic Promotions, Mrs. Lucille’s answers were actually sentiments of good will. The practice momentarily took solace in the possibility that this may have been a trick, due to her half-witch ancestry. Disturbingly, upon more mental probing, we found all of Mrs. Lucille’s answers to be true. The practice deems Mrs. Lucille to be the most dysfunctional demon

we have ever encountered. It is impossible to explain how Mrs. Lucille has managed to hold onto her position as a recruitment officer for so long, and may explain why the level of evil at Hell Inc. has been steadily decreasing over the past century. The practice would normally recommend that Mrs. Lucille be immediately terminated from her position at Hell Inc. However, with the department of Spiritual Recruitment and Demonic Promotions conducting their interviews for new employees, in the coming months. It may be more fiscally beneficial to let her reach retirement, at the end of the business year.

4 WEEK PRE-PRODUCTION SCHEDULE [SEM 1] The schedules kept the whole team on track throughout the project. We lost a few weeks to rigging and animating took a bit longer than expected but we managed for most of the time to keep to the schedules. Once things got close to deadlines we moved into a four week schedule so everyone was aware of what needed to be done for pre production hand-in. Key dates were noted out at the beginning of Production so that we could attend lectures accordly and things like Motion North and MAF to have chance to network with people in the industry. Although we did have a daily schedule for 2nd semester, shot lists were a lot more effective for time keeping.

PRE-PRODUCTION PIPELINE

POST PRODUCTION PROCESSES The pipeline process included a mixture of programs; this was important to retain as much quality as possible while still having the accessibility to alter the shots at later points, if necessary. Because of this, it meant we could break down the scenes into layers (typically; character, background, assets) and colour correct and grade them indivudally. The scenes were first exported from Toon Boom with their corresponding layers made visible as .mov output with .PNG compression and a bit depth of Millions of Colours+ to ensure the transparency is carried through the export. These .mov files were then imported into Adobe After Effects straight and exported as .PNG image sequences into sub-folders within labelled whole-scene folders. This organisation ensured that the scenes could be kept intact with all its layers. Converting the shots this way was time consuming and took roughly 5 days in total to be completed, but it was worth it to keep the quality; thankfully the 5K resolution of Harry’s backgrounds and this pipeline meant the film can be converted from 2K to 4K for a better shelf life. The various layers were then precomped in a separate project in Adobe Premiere, ready to be copied straight into the main composite project and have the timings matched up with the mastered audio. A H.264 codec render was saved for the final render of the completed film before being encoded to .mp4 format with Adobe Media Encoder; this makes the film ready for submission into many of the festivals on our festival strategy.

FINAL IMAGE SEQUENCE

MAF PITCH BIBLE We decided that MAF is a very important place to get our Animation Project seen or at least get people talking about it. We decided to create a Mini-Pitch Bible, which included our synopsis, character designs, bios, turnarounds, backgrounds and social media. We had 20, A5 booklets to hand out at Northwestivus and MAF as a whole. Not only was this a great way to get our work seen but also gives us the confidence to talk to industry and go in with something to show. As a group we got the chance to give out these booklets to people from ‘The Line Animation’, ‘Brown Bag’, ‘Flow Creative’ and ‘Ritzy London’. This was a realy accomplishment as a group and people seemed very interested in how the project progressed. So hopefully we can these people back for end of year show.

MERCHANDISE GUJ made multiple shirt designs for the franchise to be advertised. We conducted research on the most cost-effective shirt printers based in the UK and came with the up with the results below. We found that printers are willing to discount the price, but only when printing a multitude of the same design. Digital printing was the cheapest option on all websites, and the best way to achieve multiple colours. We looked into screen printing to see if there would be a price difference when having a template made up and only utilising one colour. This resulted the cost increasing by 50 to 100%. Vistaprint is a very well reknowned company, so we initially assumed it would be the most expensive for it’s outstanding reputation. However, it turned out to be the most cost effective and qualititive of all the other businesses. Independent printers from eBay were considered, however, there were barely any images that held enough evidence of the printer being of acceptable quality.

We thought this shirt was most appropriate to wear as a group for our end of year show as it presents the gorey nature of the animation but also would clearly single us out as a team to people who may attend the event. We also have plans to have life size prints of the main characters at the event so that poeple can have a photo taken with them and we can post a lot of this on our social media.

SOCIAL MEDIA STRATEGY Our Social Media presence was started in late ocotber. We started out wiht Instagram then Twitter and then moved onto LinkenIn. We built up a decent follwing but hope that this will become bigger once we have had a few screenings in festivals of our animation. We kept our social media quite professional showing finalised artwork and keeping to set days to post like ‘St. Patricks Day’, ‘Valentines Day’ etc. Our stories on Instagram were mostly presenting us working or the processes we were doing at the time such as recording Audio and Animating.
