The purpose of this “core is to serve as a greenhouse during the winter period in addition to a breezeway throughout the summer months. During the cold days, sun rays penetrate the argon-filled double glazed panels allowing heat to enter and remain within the space. The heat is stored within the concrete floor mass to be distributed throughout the home at desired times of the day.

In hopes of minimizing carbon emissions from residential construction and usage of the home, this house is intended to respect its natural surroundings while maintaining thermal comfort within the living environment. In order to achieve this goal, we integrated a central space into the house to naturally cool and heat the home while providing a direct connection to the beautiful outdoors of Pamo Valley.

For summer periods, the core can be shaded through use of a fire retardant fabric with low heat gains. All glass wall panels of the core are tucked into wall pockets to provide a breezeway for natural ventilation. While misters from above provide direct evaporative cooling to reduce indoor air temperatures and reach desired thermal comfort levels. This core is a dual system working to naturally capture the required elements to accommodate the users by combining the home, resident and environment into a single entity.

USER GROUPS & UNIT TYPES

Whittier is mainly composed of residents within the middle-aged group. In order to expand the demographics, the site will attract young working professionals to boost the city’s economy. This group includes artists, tech savvy, consumers, business owners, and entrepreneurs. They can add liveliness to the site while 1 Bedroom Loft building a sense of community.

The intent in this project is to develop an urban space that enhances the community utilizing recreational and cultural elements that explore the assimilation of art and technology.

Historically the site has been exclusive of the general public, allowing only the occasional use of filming productions. Behind the walls the site continues as a mystery to most residents unfamiliar to the area. To those who know the history, the site remains a desolate area once utilized for the retention of criminal juveniles.

In this design, our team proposed to completely open the site and invite the public in to explore and reclaim the land. Our team intended to convert the site into a regenerative space for the community. While the city initiative allowed for a two-phase redevelopment, our team chose to combine the phases as a single entity. We believed that dividing the lot limits the full use of the site.

By combining the sections into a single part the master plan is allowed the free flow of pedestrians and vehicles throughout the space for full interaction.

Facade Module Detail

In the design for Hotel Aurelia, the structural systems highlight the main aesthetic qualities of the building. The structural strategy is composed of three main systems: the exterior diagrid, three mega columns, and a supporting tension wire system. These elements allow longer spans, elimination of interior columns, a free plan, and a level of transparency desired for coastline architecture. In accordance to the coastal region, the use of a hotel program satisfies as both a daily lounge and dependable refuge site. Material selection is vital to ensure the structure’s durability in the occurance of a tsunami. Consequently, the strength and density of concrete make it the ideal material to construct a building needed to withstand the force of a tsunami. Modularity is key to provide utmost facility in transportation and construction of the elements. As a result, elements are precast and sized to fit within the limits of a shipping truck. Following the need for modularity, rooms and features are prefabricated in glass and acrylic to provide a contrast to the concrete materiality of the building. The two bottom floors use similar modules in a cross-bracing, or “weaving, format providing enough strength and rigidity to withhold impact loads and forces caused by a tsunami. The diagrid module allows for the expansion of floors in two story increments. Repetition of the modules provides enough redundancy for the structure to stand if some modules were to fail in the course of a tsunami. Consequently, the bottom two floors are left fairly open so water may flow through, while the third floor serves as a lobby and tsunami shelter when necessary. The lobby level can be appropriated based on the inundation level of the site.

Unit Configurations Loft Type A-1

Within the vicinity of a major public transportation infrastructure, the city of El Monte contains the dilapidated promenade of Valley Mall. UE Housing serves as a gateway for the city of El Monte’s revitalization efforts. Along its primary busy streets, UE maximizes the visibility into the historic promenade, while on the opposite side a large cascading plaza connects visitors along multiple levels of the site. Conducive of social interaction, informal program such as farmer’s market, flea market, art display, festivals, and performance areas generate gathering along the cascading plaza.

With over 45 units and more than 2.5 times the required parking, the project supports the anticipated growth of the Valley Mall promenade. Housing ranges from lofts to four bedroom apartments to accommodate for the varied demographics and user needs. In addition to a private patio serving as a privacy buffer to the public open space, residents have a direct connection to the courtyard and streets through the double-oriented units. Double height spaces expand the visual periphery onto the courtyard and allow direct sunlight into every room. Dividing the site into aerial building, buried building, and intermediate void as explored in Rem Koolhaas’ Maison de Bordeaux, and in the tradition of piano noble, the building stratifies public and private program. The housing layer is read as a solid device floating over a transparent non-housing layer, where the service areas are buried below. In addition to solid, translucent, and hidden layers, a fourth layer of open social space perforates the volumes as void. 17 >>
