DOYLESTOWN HOSPITAL : HEART INSTITUTE Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit

New State-of-the-art center for Heart and Vascular Care addition. An evidence based design process was implemented throughout the project to ensure research focused solutions and an advanced design. The addition includes a bed wing for the CVICU with 30 new private patient rooms that have zoned areas designated for clinicians, patients, and families. Each patient room is designed to be universal, meaning the patient will be in the same room throughout their stay. Nurse stations and other clinical functions are configured to reduce ambient noise.

CISCO

FOX Architects Cisco, an international leader in IT and networking, had recently acquired Sourcefire, a smaller firm with a traditional work culture that utilized mostly private offices. This varied greatly from Cisco’s open office culture. By implementing modular functionality in both individual and collaborative work areas, we balanced elements from each culture and provided options for personal work styles.

KETTLER REAL ESTATE FOX Architects

Kettler, a real estate development and property management company, commissioned FOX Architects to design its new, combined headquarters in McLean, Virginia. We created an open environment, supplemented by intimate work zones and energizing amenity spaces for collaboration and team-building throughout the organization.

ROOTING THE SYNANTHROPE THESIS

PLAQUEMINES PARISH, LOUISIANA - GULF COAST AWARDED: TOP PRIZE: KOSSMAN THESIS AWARD GOSHOW SUSTAINABLE BUILDING DESIGN AWARD

Through the adaptive reuse of an abandoned relic, the oil rig becomes an anchor for the meeting of two ecologies, creating a self referential stabilised system in the exchange of people, oil, food, and energy Architecture too often presumes to permanently change nature, creating a cycle of resistance between the stagnant built environment, and the dynamic natural world. When 4,000 offshore rigs were installed in the Gulf of Mexico, the inertia of the site created a new ecology around the platforms infrastructure. The rigs are now home to thousands of acres of coral reef, transforming the inhospitable muddy bottom of the gulf into a flourishing ecology. 1200 of these rigs are scheduled for removal by explosives in the next 5 years. This destruction not only affects the marine ecology, but also the coastal economy and local communities. In Southern Louisiana, the Gulf of Mexico and the Mississippi River provide all the resources for these fishing communities to live, as well as their sense of purpose.

These rigs can be used in a case-by-case basis, depending on the needs of both the communities, and the marine ecology. In Plaquemines Parish, Fish, shrimp, oysters and crabs keep the fishing communities alive, but because of human induced and natural disasters, they have had to go farther and farther offshore to get their catch. Because of this, their entire industry has changed. For most, the cost of the fuel alone, ends up equaling out the price of the fish they have caught for the day. In this case, the rig is used as a mediation point, as a staging area for the fisherman, to provide a place of rest, refuel, and storage in order to lessen the daily load.

DISCOVERY SPACE RE-VISIT RE-DE FINE RE -D ISCOVER

STATE COLLEGE PENNSYLVANIA The new Discovery Space Museum extends the State College civic district by creating a dynamic open plaza on Allen Street that invites visitors to explore further into the burrow and discover the park that is located down the new pedestrian alleyways. The visitors will follow a stepped pathway venturing through themes of geology, archaeology, astronomy, physics, engineering, technology, sustainability, and green energy. All are part of the scheme to teach about prehistoric, modern day, and future concepts.

NORTH ELEVATION The North facade focuses on the glass curtain wall that directs visitors to reflect back onto State College, and the local community buildings that are visible from our site.

SECOND FLOOR CIRCULATION / EXHIBITION SPACE The central pathway serves as a learning tool to introduce the next level of the museum the visitor is about to see. While the larger exhibition spaces create dynamic and flexible areas for more interactive exhibits.

LONGITUDINAL SECTION The Museum is designed to be a continuous pathway of discovery, allowing for a constant flow vertically as well as horizontally, and is echoed through the ground floor plan.

SECOND FLOOR PLAN SCALE: 1/16” = 1’

WEST ELEVATION The dynamic facade is created using steel ribbons. This emphasizes the pathways through the ground floor, as well as inviting visitors to keep exploring the areas beyond our site.

DUMBO,BROOKLYN :culture district Design Studio, 3rd year Architecture 16 weeks Instructor : Rebecca Henn By connecting two corners across the site, the design begins to break away from the a-typical grid of Brooklyn. Encouraging more efficient circulation across a network of strict linear movement, our site provides a central subway terminal that serves both tourists and the working class of DUMBO. The mixed use site places an emphasis on outdoor social spaces, with respect to the recent influx of techies and artists. The site is designed to encourage collaboration between local artisans and fast paced communities. To do this, we emphasized subway level commercial space as well as street level commercial space. Every street level space on the site is designed as a public investment, each encouraging stimulation and unity within the site.

ARTHUR C. CLARKES THREE LAWS 1. when a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. when he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong.

2.

the only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.

3.

any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. “man must rise above the earth - to the top of the atmosphere and beyond - for only thus will he fully understand the world in which he lives. - socrates in order to understand our place in the stars, we must remember the place which we stand. the mount lemmon observatory is designed to emphasize the sites relationship to the stars we study, creating a context for discoveries. entering the observatory, the two forms cutting through the building create two distinct vignettes : look up and travel to the stars, look down and explore the mountains travel along these paths and the separate vignettes begin to converge until it becomes impossible to separate our feet from our dreams.

NORRIS SQUARE NEIGHBORHOOD Design Studio, 3rd year Architecture 16 weeks The Norris Square Neighborhood Project is a youth center focused on creating an atmosphere that encourages students to pursue their interests in the arts as well as other programs. This project draws influence from Norris Square, as well as NSNP’s community gardens in order to create a space that encourages this community youth interaction. The large atrium is meant to allow for large groups of people, which can be used for farmers markets, t-shirt sales, as well as an assembly space for dance performances.

HAJJAR COMPETITION: GALLERY Competition, 3rd year Architecture 1 weeks This gallery and workshop is designed to showcase a collection of mid-century furniture. The program space for the galleries are split up into smaller rooms in order to better showcase how these pieces of furniture are meant to be seen, in a social setting, realistically set up as the designer intended. In order to make sure each collection is given its own space, each gallery is seperated by a glass enclosed room, that can be used simply as a socialilizing space, or visitors may use the reading areas. This alternation creates a sense that you are seeing different scenes of a play, with intermissions in between.

CENTER

Bald Eagle State Park Design Studio, 2nd year Architecture 6 weeks

The Hydrotherapy Center is located on a beautiful hill overlooking the lake in Bald Eagle State Park. The design of the center began by using the natural contours of the site, and creating streams where water organically flows down the hill. The two main buildings are where these streams intersect. The physical therapy building bridges over the streams, creating a center based on the nature and views of the site.

DESIGN BUILD Stuckeman Architecture Library 1st year Architecture 10 weeks Commissioned by the Stuckeman Architecture Library. There was an exterior and interior project. The interior project is a display wall for book jackets and announcements, as well as hidden storage. The design utilizes magnets embedded into the wood for book jackets, and modular inserts for chalkboard writing, and variations in display. The exterior project consisted of two benches located directly outside of the library doors, and creates an outdoor reading space that is now often used. Both projects are still currently in use every day.
