ARC1011 - ARCHITECTURE DESIGN 1 - MOHOLY NAGY SQUARE : SPACE, MOTION & COMPOSITION

This project was realized in three parts, starting from the analysis of a Moholy Nagy painting. Through the analysis of composition, colors, shapes and transparancy the two dimentionnal work turned into a tree dimentionnal project. This transformation led to a public space offering different possibilities and velocities, the Marry-go-Round. A19 - 1927 LASLO MOHOLY NAGY PROJECT INSPIRATION SOURCE

ARC1011 - ARCHITECTURE DESIGN 1 - MOHOLY NAGY SQUARE : SPACE, MOTION & COMPOSITION A pavillion was then add upon this pubic square to reheinforce possible occupation. This pavilion was to be generated from a 3 m side cube. It was then copied and scaled two times. Resulting in tree pavilions of 3 m, 2 m and 1 m high.

The three pavilions offer different possibilities of ownership and relations to human scale. Counterparts, the Russian Huts invite to play and explore the plaza with different views and orientations.

ARC1012 - ARCHITECTURE DESIGN 2 - LIVING IN GENERIC TERRITORY: COMMUNITY & INDIVIDUALITY

This project is meant to be a reflection on the North American suburbs; about how architecture and living in generic territory could be enhanced. This was done through several steps: research on ancestral, past and contemporary ways of life, exploring relationships between drawn grids and patterns and three dimensional forms, then planning and furbishing three model homes.

‘‘Reclaim Your Horizons’’ is the intended manifesto for a new suburban life. Reuniting with the village philosophy of balance between comunity and individuality, nature and urbanity.

ARC1012 - ARCHITECTURE DESIGN 2 - LIVING IN GENERIC TERRITORY: COMMUNITY & INDIVIDUALITY The final houses are drawn from a single ribbon folded multiple times. They have a similar size and include exterior private spaces. The ribbon thickness is maintained in folded places generating different floor hights. It is streaked with translucent material to assert its porosity and emphasize its orientation changes resulting from folding.

ARC2011 - ARCHITECTURE DESIGN 3 - TOWNHOUSE FOR A COLLECTOR: BETWEEN STREET & ALLEY

This project involves the implementation of a single family home for a collector of drawings and photos of architecture. The implantation site in Montreal is adjoining two existing residential buildings and located opposite to the Canadian Centre for Architecture. The building’s style had to be clearly contemporary but also coincide with the existing buildings facades. The house had to include private exterior spaces and correspond to the level of living expected of the client.

ARC2011 - ARCHITECTURE DESIGN 3 - COLLECTIVE HOUSING: DENSITY CHALLENGES Cross-Geminate comes from a reflection on apartment buildings types in the context of Montreal. The implantation site is rectangular and east- west oriented, making it obvious that the building should make most of the lot depth to benefit from a global throughout the day. In addition, CrossGeminate marries its surrounding landscape by taking a trapezoidal shape flared north for views of the Mont- Royal. Since the project is for a housing building, it seemed important to create an exterior common space to serve as a transition between public and private spaces. Therefore the section included at the center of two leasehold bands became an outdoor central courtyard accessible from a monumental staircase on the Gatineau Avenue. This court is a reminder of the Montreal alley, traditionally a place of exchange , meeting and children play.

ARC2011 - ARCHITECTURE DESIGN 3 - COLLECTIVE HOUSING: DENSITY CHALLENGES Cross-Geminate dynamic and contemporary form seeks to make the sector a new life while fitting elegantly into its historical context. The base is adorned with sandstone echoing the historical institutional buildings sector, while the housing is covered with a metal facing and wooden balconies. EXTERIOR PERSPECTIVE

The accommodations are also strongly emphasized in relation to this common space. First, some units are directly accessible from the latter to the first and second floor. Then the hallways are limited to one every two floor , alternating from one band to the other which allows for dwellings located on two levels, the upper level crossing the band entirely . They are furbished so as to position the kitchen on the side of the central courtyard as a reminder of a traditional type of kitchen in Montreal overseeing the alley. FRONT ELEVATION

Project programme includes commercial tenants and common areas arranged inside a base inserted under housing bands as to distinguish these two volumes with different functions.

MODEL PICTURE - WOODEN BALCONY

INTERIOR PERSPECTIVE OF CENTRAL COURT

The internal organization of Cross-Geminate was designed based on relationships between users and environment. Circulation is treated as a generating element of encounter and discovery. Corridors of access to apartments are arranged around the central courtyard, allowing them outward and thus strengthening the sense of

community centered on the court. The arrangement of vertical circulation follows the same logic of visibility and strengthens the assertion of massing . In addition embedding side stairs inside leasehold bar frees side walls allows for better window opportunities. This also introduces of a threshold at the top of the monumental staircase leading to yard, defining it more strongly.

ARC2012 - ARCHITECTURE DESIGN 4 - SOLAR DEVICE EXPLORATION: AESTHETICS & SUSTAINABILITY The membrane is perforated so as to allow partially in the light. The outer faces are perforated in different ways depending on their orientation. The corresponding face of the sun was at a low level of perforation (5%), while that corresponding to the winter sun at a taut two times higher perforation. We assume manufactured bent metal with a painted matte white outer face (to avoid dazzling reflections to the outside) and a reflective inner surface. This allows the incoming light to be redirected several times before entering the building. The variety of light paths can be expected to generate a mixture of diffuse and direct light into the interior spaces: the overall effect could be likened to reflections in the water.

ARC2012 - ARCHITECTURE DESIGN 4 - 21TH CENTURY PUBLIC LIBRARY: LIGHT, TECTONICS & IMAGINATION Flow. This word implies movement, direction or fluidity. Saul Bellow Library is a tribute to the intimate relationship between the Town of Lachine and the SaintLaurent river. Indeed, several aspects of the project are based on water. As for the rapids that saw a city rise on its edges. The city library Saul Bellow is the source of intellectual, cultural and social development of the people of Lachine. By its location at the heart of the city, the institution becomes a key element, unifying and valuable.

URBAN SETTLEMENT Thus, the envelope of the library consists of wave elements, sometimes cantilevered overhunted, sometimes extrusions of interior floors, and refers to the movement of the waves. This provides some shading for the south facades of the building for among other avoid excessive heat gain in summer.

SITE PLAN

The organic shape of the library floor plan generate diverse outdoor spaces and appears as a direct response to the program. The floors are punctuated by sets of split-level, reached by a long winding ramps. Tectonics of the project takes the idea of a light and flexible envelope. The supporting structure is concealed inside solid elements which appear to be opaque cores shaping circulation like rocks in a river bed.
