The new des ig n drew s ig nificant ly o n an exis t ing art erial c o r r i d or; t he co rrido r was ext ended and s played o pen t o draw light to th e heart o f t he ho us e. As t he co rrido r o pens , it creat es a new fl o w o f s paces t hat co nnect t he inhabit ant s t o t he g arden beyo nd. I n te g r at ing int erio r s paces wit h t he g arden was a principal feat ure o f th e pro po s ed des ig n. Primar y living s paces blend s eamles s ly w i th th e lands cape blurring t he s eparat io n bet ween ins ide and o u t. F o r th i s pro ject , I was invo lved in init ial des ig n as well as g raphic vi s u al i s at io n. This included building phys ical and virt ual mo dels o f th e des ig n, creat ing renders , draft ing and put t ing t o g et her i n s p i r at io n bo ards fo r client s t o unders t and t he lo o k and feel o f th e i r d es ig n.

T h e C oo ba rural s t udio was my final underg raduat e des ig n s tu d i o at U N SW and was t aug ht under t he aus pices o f G lenn Mu r c u t t . The s t udio invo lved a fo ur day camp at o ur s it e, a larg e p r o d u ct ive farm in Co o ba, N SW. O ur brief was t o des ig n a rural r e tr e a t acco mmo dat ing a capacit y o f 24 ( s ix fo ur-man cabins ) , a s mal l res t aurant and t he infras t ruct ure fo r a wo rk ing o live farm i n c l u d i n g g ro wing , pro ces s ing , t as t ing and s ales . Facilit at ing s o c i al int eract io n was co rners t o ne in my des ig n bet ween bo t h i n h ab i ta nt s and t he hars h Aus t ralian lands cape we wo rk ed in. The d e s i g n is built alo ng a s ing le co nt o ur t o enable eas y mo vement ac r o s s t he s it e while act ing as a plat fo rm fro m which t o view t he g r e ate r lands cape. T h e b u i l d i n g fo rm pus hes t o wards t he majo r fo rces o n s it e: t he creek rock f ace, Coob a m o u n t a in a n d th e g e n tl e n o r th e r n s l ope g ent ly s ug g es t ing and revealing t he lands cape. This pro ject t o o k place in D ung ai, a remo t e villag e near the Annapurna mo unt ain rang e. O ver a perio d o f 15 days , o ur tea m w o r k ed alo ng s ide lo cal N epali t rades man t o co ns t ruct a t o ilet bl ock fo r t he villag e primar y s cho o l. The blo ck was larg ely dr y rock co ns t ruct io n ( s t o ne co llect ed o n s it e) and t imber framing w i th c o rrug at ed met al s heet ing . The blo ck included fo ur privat e t oi l ets co nnect ed t o a s ing le s ept ic s ys tem . Fo r t he durat io n o f o ur pro ject we camped in t he s cho o l g ro u nds and were co ns t ant ly acco mpanied by t he lo cal mo t hers ’ g roup, yo u ng children and villag e animals . The experience was incredi bl y eye o pening and educat io nal in a number o f ways . I n s uch a r e mo t e part o f t he wo rld, we had a rare o ppo rt unit y t o co mple tel y d i s c o nnect fro m o ur ho mes and beco me immers ed in an area not o fte n s een by fo reig ners . Pract ically, it pro vided me wit h a physi ca l u n ders t anding fo r s o me o f t he co ns t ruct io n t echniques t aught i n u n i v ers it y while allo wing me t o wo rk alo ng s ide a t eam o f builders, tr a d e smen, s t udent s , archit ect s and client s ( mo t hers and childr en). 35
