e are Kids Included Together
(KIT) and we are proud ‌proud that so many organizations across the country are making a commitment to inclusion; proud that the US Navy Child and Youth Programs have made an agency wide commitment to inclusion; proud that our investors believe that supporting inclusion does in fact give them a positive return on investment; proud that KIT is leading the way in empowering others to create inclusive environments within their organizations and communities. For the past twelve years, KIT has pro-actively formed multi-year relationships with organizations that serve youth during the out-of-school time hours. These relationships have resulted in literally thousands of children with disabilities being welcomed, valued and included in programs within their communities. But the process would not be successful if the over 15,000 people that KIT has trained had not made a commitment to make inclusion a way of life for them and the children they influence everyday. KIT is proud to have conducted over 110 training sessions in 2008, empowering change and making a positive difference in the lives of so many. There is an enormous opportunity for KIT to take the process of inclusion to a whole new level. In fact our commitment, expertise and collaborative nature make KIT arguably the best-positioned organization in the country to achieve this. Why? Because we use knowledge to empower people; we build relationships that continually support the transfer of knowledge; we have hands-on experience and know what it takes to produce systemic change in organizations; and we’re innovative, always pushing the envelope to be the best at what we do. We are KIT and we welcome the opportunity to continue to be the change agent as organizations progress along their journey toward inclusion.

near the end of my sechat a year it’s been! AsondI year as President of the
KIT Board of Directors, I’ve been reflecting upon the amazing accomplishments and our path forward. In just the past year, KIT added four new National Affiliates (Blackhawk Family YMCA, Iowa; Camp Fire USA - Heartland Council, Kansas; Imagination Stage, Maryland and The After School Corporation (TASC), NewYork.) and signed a landmark contract to provide training on the best practices of inclusion to US Navy Child and Youth Programs worldwide. From its humble beginnings 12 years ago as a pilot project at the Lawrence Family JCC, KIT has grown into a mature organization. In Spring 2009, KIT will have 10 National Affiliates, 27 local Affiliates and 27 alumni Affiliates. Furthermore, KIT is offering training to staff from 293 different sites in San Diego County and countless others across 24 states. In 2009 and beyond, KIT will be involved in training that indeed spans the globe. Add to this the continued success of the National Training Center on Inclusion, the diverse attendance at the annual National Conference on Inclusion, the vast catalog of materials at the Sophie Brody Resource Library, and the emerging power of KIT’s new eLearning modules and you get a sense of how incredibly busy the past year has been. The key to the success of KIT is the tremendously talented and dedicated staff, an enthusiastic and engaged Board of Directors, generous donors, connected programs and numerous volunteers from the community. Our collective passion and drive for inclusive communities has enabled KIT to reach new heights and achieve limitless dreams. On behalf of the Board of Directors, all of the KIT affiliates, and the countless children who benefit from KIT’s services, I want to salute each and every one of you. Without your incredible effort and personal sacrifices, KIT would not be able to change the lives of so many children with and without disabilities. Well done, it is an honor to serve KIT alongside you.
Brian Trotier
President, KIT Board of Directors

What:
Kofi Annan said “to live is to choose. But to choose well, you must know who you are and what you stand for, where you want to go and why you want to get there.
KIT stands for inclusion, its goals: to enrich the lives of all who participate and to increase understanding and acceptance of disabilities as a natural part of life. What we do is train. We train professionals on the best practices of inclusion and with the help of NTCI, provide support and resources for providers - tools to enrich their professional experience and the well-being of the children they serve.

In 2008 KIT served on an inclusion task-force, led by the Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation. The task force included representatives from the fields of youth development, inclusion and disability services. Together, the task force created a document titled Paths to Inclusion. This 14 page booklet provides resources for including youth with and without disabilities in community life. Paths to Inclusion is available free through the website includingallkids.org, which KIT manages. In 2008 KIT distributed over 11,000 copies of the Paths to Inclusion booklet to 38 different states and three countries.
NTCI Website
Organizational Site License
KIT’s National Training Center on Inclusion website continues to add new features using the latest technology. A searchable knowledge database provides answers to frequently asked questions about inclusion, disability, behavior, program policies and more. Questions come from KIT live training sessions, helpline calls, emails and affiliate forums - all are answered by KIT’s team of inclusion specialists. New questions are added every month. View the feature at kitonline.org/ ntci and click the tab “Database.”
In 2008 KIT launched its Organization Site License, allowing agencies to purchase access to KIT’s state-of-the-art eLearning modules for their entire staff. KIT’s eLearning modules are self-paced and available 24/7. Each interactive module can be completed in approximately 30 minutes. Titles include Introduction to Inclusion, Respectful Accommodations, Supporting Positive Behavior and Partnering with Families. In addition to the eLearning modules, the site license includes all of KIT’s complementary services from conference registration to live technical support with an inclusion specialist. As a site license member an organization becomes part of a national network of out-of-school time providers that believe in inclusion and are working to ensure that all children have access to quality programs.
Other new features include a travel blog written by KIT trainers and recordings of webinars presented by KIT staff.
KIT on YouTube Thanks to the Karl Kirchgessner Foundation KIT was able to produce a video podcast on Accommodations for Children with Visual Impairments. Professionally-produced, the video podcast features presenter Lisa Irving-Ramirez demonstrating practical accommodations that can be used in a recreational or child care setting. Acting students from San Diego Junior Theatre, a KIT Alumni Affiliate, provided on-camera assistance as they demonstrated the accommodations. You can see the video podcast on KIT’s website or by searching the tags “accommodations” and “children” on YouTube. In Spring 2009, KIT will officially launch its YouTube non-profit channel.
Online Instructor-Led Course Expanding its online training series, KIT launched its first instructor-led course in 2008. Strategies for Creating and Sustaining Inclusive Programs was developed in collaboration with the San Diego State University’s Interwork Institute Center for Distance Learning. Taught by Dr. Mary Shea, the six-week course included streaming video, case studies, interactive discussion boards and weekly lectures. The first group of students represented a variety of types of programs from all over the United States. 6
When:
The time for inclusive communities is now. When children grow up in inclusive environments, everyone benefits.
KIT supports Affiliates in achieving natural ratios where 10-12% of the program participants are children with disabilities, the most severe disabilities representing 2-3%.

Where:
Everywhere. NTCI has removed the geographical limitations associated with training on inclusion. No matter where an organization rests on the globe, through eLearning and the creation of National Affiliates, KIT is one step closer to its goals of enriching the lives of all who participate and increasing understanding and acceptance of disabilities as a natural part of life.
C
9
Kids Included Together Annual Report 2007/8
Why:
Despite the passage of The Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990, children with disabilities are still being turned away from out-of-school time programming because staff members are often overwhelmed and under-trained. KIT helps bridge the gap, taking the fear out of inclusion and replacing it with practical strategies and useful tools. The "why" also goes beyond the law. Almost everyone will know or care about someone who has or will have a disability. It is a natural condition of the human experience.

How:
"You get the best out of others when you give the best of yourself." .. Harvey S. Firestone How do we do it all? With the help of many supporters. From corporations and foundations to individual gifts of time and talent; their support, their giving of the best of themselves, allows KIT to finance programs that produce systemic change within an organization, creating inclusive communities.
