oing more with less… it’s a phrase we’ve all used, especially in recent months, but how often do we actually put those words into practice showing measurable results?
At KIT, the 2008-2009 fiscal year personified the phrase, “doing more with less.” At a time when many non-profit organizations were closing their doors or compromising their missions to keep their heads above water, KIT recognized the importance of deepening the impact of its mission and met that challenge with great success. Now more than ever, families need opportunities for their children to access out-of-school time programs because both parents find themselves working to meet the demands of an unstable economy. This means KIT has to reach out to greater numbers of providers and train them on innovative strategies to create inclusive environments so that all kids, regardless of their abilities, can be included.
sionals increased by 102%, resulting in a 46% increase in the number of children with disabilities served over the previous year. This measurable and demonstrated increase in our service delivery is clearly a testament to the dedication, determination and drive of our Board of Directors, staff, and you, our investors. Thank you for continuing to believe in the importance of KIT’s mission and for helping us bring that mission to life in communities throughout San Diego County and across the nation.
To remain fiscally viable in FY ’08-’09, KIT reduced its annual budget by over $150,000 from FY ’07-’08. In spite of these reductions, the number of trained youth development profes-

hat an honor it has been to serve KIT as President of the Board of Directors this past year. Before accepting this role, I thought deeply about the challenges we might face this year and was prepared to face some obstacles. I look back on the year now and I am so pleased at what we have accomplished together as a team. Throughout this experience, I have had the pleasure of watching this team in action and, believe me, they are movers and shakers! It is clear that each member of the KIT team is focused and passionate about our mission and the future of our organization. This has been a very difficult year in our community and the KIT staff, Board of Directors, and our investors have realized that our efforts are even more crucial in these tough times. Children need our services more now than in previous years as community resources continue to decline. Our staff was committed to serving even more organizations than it had ever served before and we accomplished this goal. Our Board of Directors was focused on spreading the good news and recruiting incredible new board members who share our passion. The energy on our team was even more power-
ful than the previous year as goals were set and far exceeded. Simply put, this is a result of your dedication to enriching lives. When I see other organizations floundering around us, I take a look inward into our organization, and I am in awe. I think of all of the children we have impacted this past year through our services and I am so pleased with our results. Our outreach and ability to design innovative technological opportunities this year have captured a new level of excitement and has set us far apart from other organizations. This will lead to a brighter future for all of the lives that we will touch in the coming years. On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you. Thank you for your belief in what we do each day. Thank you for allowing us to make a difference in so many lives. Above all, thank you for accepting disabilities as a natural part of life. President, KIT Board of Directors Jan&Jane

In 2008, KIT debuted its new eLearning program which provides a series of self-paced online training modules to child and youth development professionals. The modules are based on KIT’s Opening Doors to Inclusive Programs curriculum, and were developed in a partnership with San Diego State University Interwork Institute Center for Distance Learning. Since April 2008, over 5,000 people from around the world have created eLearning accounts. Over 97% of eLearners report that they feel more confident in their ability to serve all children as a result of KIT’s online training. From April-June 2009, KIT partnered with the California Department of Education (CDE) After School Programs Office to provide online training on inclusion to 1,200 staff from all over the state. This training was part of a larger effort on the part of CDE to ensure that children with disabilities are being served in programs funded by 21st Century Community Learning Centers, the After School Education and Safety Program (ASES) and After School Safety and Enrichment for Teens (ASSETS).

KIT received generous support from the National Foundation for Autism Research (NFAR) and the Special Hope Foundation in 2009 to create training booklets to complement KIT’s curriculum. NFAR’s support allowed KIT to create a print booklet titled Supporting Inclusion for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders in Community Programs, which was distributed at KIT trainings throughout the year. The Special Hope Foundation provided funding for KIT to create a new training module and accompanying booklet titled Supporting Children with Developmental Disabilities, which debuted at KIT’s 2009 National Conference on Inclusion.
In April 2009, over 200 people from across the globe convened at KIT’s home in Liberty Station to participate in the 5th Annual National Conference on Inclusion. Teenager Tyler Greene traveled from Iowa to share his message of inclusion and “throwing away can’t” with participants. Paralympic Gold Medalist April Holmes shared her life story with humor, presenting the inspiring keynote. The Journey to Inclusion Awards Luncheon recognized Ingrid Kanics, OTR/L of Ohio as the second Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation Inclusion Champion.
Over 20 workshop sessions were presented by top professionals in the field at the 5th Annual KIT National Conference on Inclusion. Visit kitonline.org to view the virtual conference.

KIT expanded its training delivery repertoire this year by presenting bi-monthly webinars on inclusion-related topics. Delivered in 30 minutes using an internet connection and a phone line, webinars were an efficient use of training time for KIT’s audience. Topics included Understanding ADHD, Motivating Your Summer Staff and Friendship: From Interaction to Connection. Over 1,100 people from all over the world have participated in KIT’s webinars. Visit KIT’s website to view archived webinars on selected topics. “The meeting was insightful and I intend to use the bulk of what I have learned today.” said Michael Bolus, of The After School Corporation, New York City.
In May 2009, KIT’s Director, National Training Center on Inclusion, Torrie Dunlap, participated in an Inclusion Strategy Summit at the National Education Association in Washington, DC. Leaders from youth development and disability service agencies came together around the documentary film, Including Samuel, to discuss ways of promoting the message of inclusion. The summit was led by staff from Working Films, located in North Carolina, and Dan Habib, filmmaker-in-residence at the University of New Hampshire and writer/director of Including Samuel. Several of the key strategies from the summit, including a Youth Summit on Inclusion, will be implemented in 2010.
In July 2009, KIT staff members Torrie Dunlap and Alissa Lavelle traveled to Philadelphia to present a workshop at the US Army Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) Manager’s Conference. At the event 100 EFMP managers from around the world heard KIT’s message of inclusion and received practical strategies for supporting children with disabilities in inclusive settings at their installations. The session, titled Talking About Inclusion with Kids Included Together, was very well received.

2009 saw the successful conclusion of the first year of partnership between KIT and the US Navy Child & Youth Programs. Highlights of the year included creation of new training materials, site visits to 5 installations to present training and consultation, and revision of Navy Child & Youth Program policies and procedures related to inclusion. A key feature of the partnership is a staffed Helpline where child and youth development professionals can call in with questions related to inclusion in their specific setting and receive customized strategies and support.

Over the Edge WITH TWO FEET OVER THE EDGE, TWO HANDS ON THE ROPE AND ONE DEEP BREATH, MAKE A GRAND ENTRANCE
On October 17, 2009, the spectacular Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego, the west coast’s tallest waterfront building, was the setting for a unique fundraising event never before experienced in Southern California: Over the Edge for KIT. Participants enjoyed a breathtaking 360 degree view from the top of San Diego and pushed themselves to the limit by rappelling from the 33rd story of the Manchester Grand Hyatt to raise funds for Kids Included Together. TWENTY ONE
40 rappellers from the community and local media rose to the challenge to support inclusive out-of-school time programs, raising over $50,000. In addition to the rappel, Justin Hines performed at the Birch North Park Theatre the night before the event and celebrated with supporters at the day-of Landing Party.
