I started making collages when I was in elementary school.

I would make pictures, mix type--everything I owned was made with found paper. When middle school came along, all I wanted was the “Razr” cell phone, because you could edit pictures on it. My family was always very supportive of my whims, and cultivated my creativity. My passion for photography was there before I even realized. The bond that I shared with my family and friends and the adventures we had, were things I wanted to document. It was a jagged line that led me to design, but all roads led to the same destination. My journey to document people, places, and feelings is what makes me tick. There is an authenticity to photography; an ability to bottle something that could otherwise be unexplainable. When you combine these two powerful forms of art together, it’s golden. I pull my inspiration from photography, Dada, double exposures, film photography, collages; and apply it to graphic problem solving. These are a few of my favorite things.

Project: Boutique Hotel Art Direction: Sean Bacon & Candice Lopez

Frank’s is a place for all things Halloween. You arrive at a smartly decorated hotel filled with things needed to celebrate the best holiday of the year. This is a place where you can bring your upper middle class family, and savor the season year round. There’s a retro horror aspect that’s appeals to Mom and Dad, with animated favorites like “Nightmare Before Christmas”, for the kids. Trick or treating 365 days, parties and costume contests, are all part of what makes Frank’s so tempting. Many enter, but few can leave. I wanted to design a hotel that was fun and scary for the kids, but where parents would also have a blast. I used vintage photography from horror films and paired them with scary cartoon looking type.

Project: Car Emergency Kit Art Direction: Sean Bacon & Candice Lopez

Spark is a car emergency kit with everything needed for roadside drama. The inspiration for the name and pattern came from lightning, and the concept of jumper cables, for a fast fix. Not only is this emergency kit purposeful and compact, it’s easy to look at. I wanted Spark to stick out on the shelves at an auto supplystore. The target market for this project is 16-30 year old men who demand the best for their car, with a little edge. The graphic language speaks to this demographic with it’s strong, masculine approach. I chose blue because it’s not commonly used and wanted this product to stick out, both on the shelves and in your car.

PRL Project: Knitting Magazine Art Direction: Sean Bacon & Candice Lopez

Purl is a magazine that speaks the language of knitters. Purl reinforces the fact that their genre of craft is important, the layout is very youthful and playful. Size is everything and I wanted it to be convenient and travel friendly. Purl is a tool to promote passion for the touch of the hand. I hand rendered the logo and then digitized it. I wanted to appeal to a younger audience than the average knitter, middle-income women ages 15-25. Readers will be excited to open a current magazine with articles that pertain to knitting and crafting things they would actually want to wear. Purl has all the hipster girls wanting more.

Freak Show is a tattoo convention that takes place in Los Angeles California. It is based on of the famous “tattooed women” and other such “freaks” of the mid 16th century. Combining vintage photos of sideshow performers with a fresh calligraphic font, marries the old and new. I hoped to make tattooing more accessible, and relevant to a larger audience. I wanted all the “swag“ from the event to be branded very intentionally so that people who didn’t understand tattoo culture completely, felt like they belonged. So many tattoo conventions are designed in a cliché way and I wanted to make sure this was different and unique. I went back to the essence of the culture rather than taking a very literal approach.

PLEASE

Project: Gluten-Free Bakery Art Direction: Sean Bacon & Candice Lopez

Gluten Free Please is a baking company devoted to crafting modern day treats in a gluten free way. It might be health reasons, or personal choice, but nothing is more satisfying than enjoying your favorite sweets. The hand drawn patterning is pulled from the Victorian era, but adds a modern twist. The branding is definitely geared to upper-middle income 20-35 gluten-free individuals with a sweet tooth. The client wanted something youthful, with a brand that could be expanded into more than just pastry boxes. I chose mint for whimsy, gray as it’s counter and used a clean typeface that still hinted at the Victorian era but wouldn’t take away from the pattern.

Project: Museum Posters Art Direction: Sean Bacon & Candice Lopez

Radicondoli is a small quaint hill town in Italy. Their Geothermal Museum is noteworthy, yet needs more publicity in order to attract tourists and visitors to this Tuscan region. The concept was to use old photos of Radicondoli townspeople, then repurpose them with modern geometric shapes. These posters are double sided and have information on the back that communicates what geothermal energy is, as well as the location of the museum. With a helpful energy sponsor, they can be put in classrooms or informational places to promote the rich resources close to home. The design was meant to evoke old memories. I wanted people to feel like the museum belonged to them again, by using photography of their own hometown. I applied other graphic elements, such as geothermal graphing, to give it the technological feel needed to legitimize the museum.

To mark 100 years of success, San Diego City College needed an alumni book to feature past students and their accomplishments. I was enlisted to shoot a set of portraits for the project and wanted to show the whimsy and celebratory aspect of this downtown institution. The book will showcase why donors should support students and how scholarships and funding are making differences in and beyond the classroom. We asked students to come have a party with us. I wanted the shots to be candid and fun, as well as have portraits for all of the bios in the book. We used black and white photography with the City colors and Whitney as our font. The point was to make the book feel like it was officially City College, but stylistically more youthful.

Project: Guerrilla Gallery Marketing Art Direction: Sean Bacon & Candice Lopez In 2014, San Diego City College celebrates it’s centennial with many new buildings including a fine art gallery. 1313 Gallery is the college’s new fine art gallery for contemporary art. In an effort to recruit the well-known street artist Shepherd Fairey to come and be the first featured artist, our team decided to invite him in a very creative way. After many conceptual directions we decided to appeal to the Constructivist nature of his works. My partners and I covered a blank set of Russian nesting dolls in his art and used them to carry the invitation. Together we hand delivered the project in an old crate to his studio in Los Angeles and I documented the event with photography.

Project: Sketchbook & Process Art Direction: Sean Bacon & Candice Lopez

I always have a sketchbook on me. You’ll find them sitting on a shelf in my room, and they are all an authentic record of my process. Sketching is something incredibly important to me, because it helps me think things out on paper. These books become a visual journey, taking the viewer through the twists and turns of my design thinking. Many of the doodles represent actual projects, or the beginnings of one. They document where all the magic happens.

I think I’ve always been a visual person, I prefer an image over the 1,000 words that it’s worth. Photography is tangible and good photography can make you taste and feel, it evokes emotion. The first camera I remember owning and using was a Polaroid my Grandpa gave me. I took pictures of everything and was mesmerized watching the exposures appear in the small white frames. I’ve had many cameras since then, always shooting and learning as I went along. The best advice I ever received about photography, was to “always shoot like you’re shooting film, think about your shots, and make them count.” Quality over quantity. In this day in age, where a camera can be available to everyone, I want to capture the moments that matter. Anyone can snap 100 photos, I just want that 1.

To all my friends and family that helped me during this process, you guys are awesome. I’m sorry for all the weird things I made you do at the expense of my portfolio. To my parents, my grandparents, thank you. I wouldn’t have finished without your support. To all the people who allowed me to take your picture, thanks for being so willing. Sean, Candice, where do I start? Thank you for selling your souls for a semester so that we could have the best books possible. You guys are wonderful. I’m indebted to you, and humbled by your example.
