Toscana Lifestyle A WORD FROM THE LIFESTYLE DIRECTOR
TL
By Chris Reeder, Lifestyle Director
When I was a kid growing up here in Phoenix, we knew all of our neighbors and hung out with them ALL THE TIME. It was fun, and helped build a sense of community. These days it’s understandable to feel hesitant to exchange personal information with every single neighbor, I’ve felt that way before. I was fortunate to have found a few neighbors who feel like we relate easily and over time we have become more than just neighbors; we are good friends who have each other’s best interests at heart. If you’re one of the many with no idea who their neighbors are, I would like to suggest some benefits of befriending them- AND how your building can easily build a “neighbor network”. 1. It is far more peaceful to live among neighbors that like and respect each other, especially when living in close proximity. Respectful neighbors are less likely to invade personal space, be loud and rowdy, and make overall daily life stressful. For example, it’s so much easier to call your neighbor and ask them to turn their surround sound down than it is to sit and stew about “how loud they are”. On the flip side, it’s nice to know if your surround sound is too loud and bothersome. 2. Sharing common space- Neighbors with a friendly connection can more easily enjoy common space together. Perhaps your neighbor has just had a surgery and would love help moving a lounge chair by the pool. 3. Are you heading to Costco? We only have so much storage space- splitting a package of 8 boxes of tissue frees up space. Back up shopping and errand combining are also great ways to help
your neighbors…or receive help when it may be needed. 4. Business networking and connecting people. Even if you aren’t in the workforce at the moment we all have family we can refer new business contacts or possible mentors to. 5. Emergency contact and package helpYou may want to exchange keys and become each other’s “emergency contact” in the Dwelling Live system. That way if there is an emergency such as a flood in your downstairs neighbors unit, your emergency contact can let maintenance into your unit to complete necessary repairs (Let us know at the office if you would like to add an emergency contact into the system). Additionally, how awesome it is to have a neighbor to feed your pet while you are out of town or pick up a package.
How can I foster better resident connections within my building, you may ask? Building 15 has set a wonderful example for us all; The first Monday of every month residents hold a resident mixer/potluck. All building residents are welcome to meet in the building lobby, share snacks and have a chat. The association sends out a targeted email to the building residents reminding them of the mixer. If you are interested in organizing a building specific program, we would be happy to help- just let us know!

Toscana’s group of ladies, Toscana Five, enjoys exploring different restaurants in the valley and is happy to provide unbiased lunch reviews from the various spots in the valley. Vincent Market Bistro located on 3930 E. Camelback Road #204 in Phoenix is a cozy, chic bistro serving a French fare. The restaurant features Parisian décor and ambience. Luncheon prices are from $8 to $16. Their Four Cheese Ravioli with light tomato basil sauce was excellent! BBQ Chicken Pizza was very flavorful and their Coq Au Vin with gratin Dauphinoise was also a delicious option. One of the ladies ordered Herb Crepe filled with shrimp and served with avocado corn salsa – no disappointment here! While they were celebrating two birthdays, the server brought in a complementary dessert for each person at the table, including Crème Brûlée and a Warm Chocolate Tart. Overall experience at Vincent Market Bistro was truly terrific.

New Unit Remodeling Policy At the last Board of Directors Meeting the Board approved a new Unit Remodeling Policy which can be found at www.toscanaliving.net. As the buildings age and new owners are moving in the Board has seen a number of architectural requests for remodels being submitted. As a result, this new policy was put in place to protect the association, set reasonable time frames for completion of the project and make sure that work is being done at certain times of the day. Some of key items addressed in the policy are as follows: • Time for Completion: All approved projects must be completed within 30 days of the project start date listed on the application, unless otherwise approved by the Board. • Deposit: There is a required deposit in the amount of $500.00 that shall be used to pay for cleaning costs and damages incurred by the Association, if any, as well as to pay any violation fines imposed by the Association for non-compliance with this Policy or any of the Association’s Governing Documents. The deposit is refundable to the extent it is not used to pay the foregoing costs, damages and fines. • Noise; Hours of Remodeling/Construction: Noiseproducing work, such as hammering and drilling, within a Unit shall be done only on weekdays and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and in accordance with all local ordinances. Noise-producing work is prohibited on Sundays as well as Federal and State Holidays. • Hallway Use: Hallways may not be used for storage of any materials or tools. A protective barrier must be used in the hallways when moving materials into the unit and daily cleanup of the hallways must be completed, ie. Dust/wipe down the surfaces and vacuum if needed. • Elevator Use: Elevator pads must be placed on all surfaces of the elevator prior to moving any large
items, equipment, debris, or anything that could scratch or otherwise damage the elevator. • Dumpster Use: Contractor’s dumpsters may be considered if requested in writing with the application; specifying the number of days the dumpster will be on premises. Such requests require the approval of the Association in advance. • Parkade Use: Contractors may not park their vehicles in the parkade at any time. UPDATES FROM YOUR MAINTENANCE TEAM By Frank Young, Maintenance Supervisor Your Toscana maintenance team removes about 20 cubic yards of trash and recyclables every day. To help with this effort we ask that items be placed in the proper bins for disposal. Below is a handy guide of what can be recycled and what should not, followed by a Q&A provided by Republic services. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at fyoung@toscanaliving.net or call 480-585-0808 ext.225. 1. How can I tell which plastics are recyclable? Republic services accepts numbers 1-7. 2. How clean do containers need to be before I toss them into the recycling bin? We certainly appreciate if you can rinse the containers! A little bit of dried substance is ok. The cleaner the container is, the easier to recycle. 3. Do I need to take the labels off jars and cans? No need to waste water and energy struggling with stubborn, gummy labels. They will be burned off during the recycling process. 4. Can caps and lids be recycled? Yes, and removing bottle caps and lids is a good recycling habit because they are a different material than the bottle. It also makes the recycling facility a safer place too; the pressure that builds up in a sealed plastic bottle can blow a whole bale of plastic and potentially injure workers. 5. Can plastic bags be recycled with plastic containers? We can accept the plastic bags that hold your recyclable items. Most plastic bags can be accepted separately if you’re willing to take them to a drop-off location. Most every grocery store has a plastic bag collection station.
7. If something is made from recycled paper or plastic, can it be recycled again? Yes!! For example bottles and jugs may become food and beverage containers again, they might become carpet or stuffing for sleeping bags. Milk jugs are often made into plastic lumber, recycling bins and toys. 8. If a glass or plastic product doesn’t have a recycling logo on it, can it still be recycled? Possibly. If you’re not sure if something is recyclable, it’s probably better to put it in the trash than in the recycling bin. This eliminates extra sorting time for the workers at the recycling facility if it is a non-recyclable item. 9. How do I find out what to do with hard-torecycle items? A surprisingly wide variety of products are recycled by various organizations for free or with a small fee. Computers, CDs, cell phones, cooking oil, phone books, foam peanuts, light bulbs, batteries and even clothing are just a few of the items you can recycle with very little effort by taking them to a drop-off center — instead of throwing them away. For dropoff centers in your area, visit earth911.org or check with your local recycling, solid waste, environment or public works department.

In and Around Toscana KEVIN’S KORNER By Kevin Wiegel, Administrative Assistant
Another month has passed and I’m happy to say I’m still very much enjoying my job at Toscana Command Central. I’m trying my best to remember everyone’s name as I meet them, but don’t be offended if I forget yours; dozens of people stop by my desk everyday so it might take a while. We just received the new shredder so we shouldn’t have any more problems with paper jamming. And to answer a few business center questions I always get….yes, the big copier in the hallway does scanning and will scan documents directly to any email address. The printer in the Business Center can also print wirelessly from your smart phone or laptop.

For those of you residing in buildings 1, 10 and 11, the hardware controlling the parkade entrance under building 10 has been updated and will now allow entrance using the DwellingLIVE access devices (windshield stickers and handhelds). Keep in mind that not all residents have yet been programmed for the RUD, but we are earnestly working through the programming to get everyone in these buildings on board. I’m very happy to help you with this access issue or any other DwellingLIVE concerns. We’ve had a few recent sighting of native wildlife in the community- coyotes, javalinas, and a possible bobcat spotted. We all should remember that we live in their desert and to just keep your distance if you see one of the furry creatures. Which is a great segue to remind you that the maximum leash length is six (6) feet—keep your pets close to you, for their protection!

MOVIE REVIEW: FENCES By Gil Berkowitz WASHINGTON AND DAVIS OSCAR WORTHY PERFORMANCES “Fences”, is the film adaptation of the Broadway play written by August Wilson. The film is produced and directed by Denzel Washington who also stars in the movie with Viola Davis. The two of them won Tony awards for their roles on Broadway back in 2010. They are both outstanding. The movie is a family drama that takes place in a rundown black working-mans neighborhood in Pittsburgh around 1950. “Fences” is about the struggling Maxson family and their Patriarch Troy Maxson (Denzel Washington). Troy is a garbage collector. Every evening he returns from work and holds court in the back yard of his home that he shares with his wife Rose (Viola Davis) and his son Corey (Jovan Adepo). He brings his coworker Bono (Stephen Henderson) home with him. He likes to drink and pontificate. His friend and the bottle are great listeners as he spins his tales and stories of anger and regret. Troy once had a chance at sports fame in the negro baseball league, but there was room for only one black star to rise to the major league and he was overshadowed by Jackie Robinson. He never got another opportunity because of segregation and got into difficulty. As a result of an altercation and self-defense he
committed a murder and served a fifteen year prison term. Troy hides his deep rage and anger behind a combative, loud and harddrinking countenance that keeps his friends guessing what he will do next. He is a bully and enjoys demeaning everyone. Troy has some dark secrets that eat away at him. His wife Rose has stood by him through the highs and lows of their marriage. Her eighteen years with him have been disappointing. Their marriage is showing strain and stress. Corey, their son is eligible for a football scholarship, which irritates Troy so much it brings out his anger and regrets that he has been stifled for years. Troy does everything he can to to prevent his son from becoming the failed athlete that he was. In addition to preventing Corey from playing football Troy has kept a secret from Rose. He has a mistress
who is having his illegitimate child. Tensions mount, Corey and the long-suffering Rose clash with Troy. Rose finally explodes and the screen trembles with her passion and anger. After all the years of keeping the family together and acting as a buffer between Corey and Troy she finally through tear-choked words asks: “What about my life, what about me?” It is a heart breaking scene. “Fences” is about how our environment shapes and molds us and how members of the family affect each other. Washington and Davis will be nominated for best actor and actress and the film will be nominated for best picture. The film is showing in Harkins theaters throughout the valley and is rated PG-13 for language and suggestive references. It runs for 138 minutes.
