Greetings from the HEAD OF SCHOOL
Dear Members of The Cathedral School Community,
“
This is an incredible school. I am so proud of all our students and our wonderful families who believe passionately in what we do.
M A RSH A K. NEL SO N
a few weeks ago, a small group of our
most recent graduates came back to visit The Cathedral School. They caught up with friends and faculty and posed for photographs on the porch, a joyful ritual that plays out every summer and fall at our school. What struck me most was not that these young people remain deeply loyal and attached to Cathedral. Of course they do. More remarkable is their overwhelming enthusiasm for their new schools. Without exception, these students love the day and boarding schools they are now attending, and they are confidently embracing the challenges of high school. Cathedral prepared them to

be scholars, critical thinkers, compassionate citizens, leaders, and good friends. The Class of 2015 is thriving. These talented alumni are testaments to the rigorous education and caring community that are the hallmark of a Cathedral education. This is an incredible school. I am so proud of all our students and our wonderful families who believe passionately in what we do and who show their support through gifts to the Annual Fund. Last year, 100% of families gave to the Annual Fund! As you know, gifts of every size are vital to The Cathedral School’s mission and make a genuine difference. We are, by design, a small school, allowing a greater focus on every child. Therefore, each and every dollar raised is critical to educating our students, supporting our teachers, and upgrading our facilities. Your generous contributions also allow us to innovate, to create robust new academic and co-curricular programs, and to lead the way among our peer independent schools. I am thankful every day to be a member of this warm and truly unique community. It is indeed my privilege to share this 2014–15 Annual Report, which acknowledges our generous donors and volunteers. Thank you for your ongoing support of The Cathedral School. With gratitude,
Marsha K. Nelson Head of School

Report from the BOARD PRESIDENT
“
Cathedral… has grown…remaining true to our mission while innovating and serving students in new ways to prepare them to make a difference in a 21st century world.
K RISTIN KEA RNS-JO RDA N
as i write this letter, the last for me in the role
of Board President, our family is in the exhilarating – and a little bit exhausting —process of finding a high school for our son Leo. These transitions are a wonderful prompt to reflect on how much our children have grown as individuals and the role that Cathedral has played in that growth. Cathedral’s mission is to prepare articulate, confident, responsible citizens of the world. As I watch this class of eighth graders leading within the Cathedral community and exploring their high school options, I see articulate, I see confident, I see responsible. Cathedral students’ exemplifying the mission is not new—each class of eighth graders has impressed me with their scholarship and their citizenship. This time, though, I am observing the eighth grade with vivid memories of these school leaders as kindergarten urchins. I see them rolling down the hill in the small playground. I picture their Weekend News reports with the adorable phonetic spelling. I remember one of them being pretty nervous about approaching the very tall salad bar in the dining room. How grateful I was when Leo’s lunch server went with him to the salad bar one autumn day and helped him to get comfortable making a ham sandwich.
04
Cathedral, too, has grown in its academic and extracurricular program since these 8th graders were in kindergarten, remaining true to our mission while innovating and serving students in new ways to prepare them to make a difference in a 21st century world. All of the progress that happens at Cathedral flows from clearly articulated goals, which flow from the mission. Some of the changes over the last nine years were relatively small. In order to make lunchtime less stressful for our youngest community members, the school commissioned kindergarten-size salad bars and moved kindergarten lunch into the classroom. Some advances were bigger. In order to better allow for deeper learning and to give students opportunities to seek individualized instruction from their teachers, a six-day rotating schedule was rolled out four years ago. To make space for the kinds of curricular and extracurricular projects that both capture the imagination of students and integrate the content of the various disciplines, we have renovated and refreshed our building and taken steps to capture more square footage for the future. As we become more analytical about our performance, we have begun to assess our degree of success in helping students to develop a set of capacities essential to success in high school, college, and career: resilience, creativity, ethics, teamwork, curiosity, and time management. We are also redoubling our focus on measuring achievement in the more traditional academic disciplines and students’ success when they reach high school. With the school strong and moving forward in so many areas, it is a great time to transition the Board President role to an outstanding leader, Angie Karna. Angie, mother of two Cathedral students and Managing Director and Head of Global Markets Legal of Nomura, brings a deep commitment to the school’s mission, along with legal and financial expertise. Since joining the Cathedral Board in 2011, she has focused with extraordinary dedication on advancing the school’s quality, socioeconomic diversity, and sustainability.

Report from the BOARD PRESIDENT
Over the last two years, Angie and I have worked in collaboration with the Cathedral Church’s team to ensure that the school’s needs and those of the Cathedral are advanced in tandem. This strong working partnership with the Cathedral will afford us opportunities that we could never achieve on our own. Angie takes the helm at a moment when both our independent work inside the school walls and our collaboration with the Cathedral are entering an exciting next phase. Congratulations, Angie, and thank you. With leadership from a talented team of administrators and teachers, a dedicated board, active alumni, and current and future eighth grade students, the Cathedral community is building our future. That future will stand on the foundation of Cathedral values, most notably our commitment to equity and excellence, and will require our broader community to be engaged and involved. I am so proud to be a part of this community and invite you to join me in support of the school we all love.

history of conservative, mission-driven financial management during the 2014–15 school year. Working with our partners in the administration, the Finance Committee has striven to maintain a strong and strategic financial model that fully supports the academic program of the school and our socioeconomically diverse community. This past year, the school’s operating revenue totaled $10.9 million. Tuition and fees represented 87% of revenues and remains a continuing focus for the Committee as we review data to better understand trends in tuition rates and demographics in the New York City area and throughout the country. The school spends $10.7 million in operating expenses. Of that 70% was spent on salaries and benefits, as we endeavor to compensate our splendid teachers, administrators, and staff in line with their extraordinary efforts.
Over the past seven years, The Cathedral School community has funded $10.4 million in improvements to our 100-year-old building, including new science labs, a beautiful kindergarten center overlooking Morningside Park, and a state-of-the-art kitchen for the preparation of family-style lunches. We look forward to exciting new projects that will further enrich the student experience and add value to the Cathedral Close. The school offers far more financial aid than our peers, giving our student and family community a depth and variety few other schools can approach. Ensuring that this mission can be sustained for decades to come is a top priority. To that end we are working diligently to understand the changing economic landscape and to develop ever-sharper modeling tools. We believe that with careful management, development of new revenue streams, prudent investment, and the continuing generosity of our fantastic families, The Cathedral School’s mission can thrive far into the future. Thank you for your continued support.

is a very special place. Our community lives out the School’s commitment to developing articulate, confident, responsible citizens of the world. Cathedral’s strong academic programs, championship-winning sports teams, longstanding dedication to diversity, equity, and justice, and active parent body make it one of the most unique schools in the city. Sound finances are key to Cathedral’s success. The Institutional Advancement Committee of the Board of Trustees assists in the fundraising efforts of the School. Such efforts are crucial to maintaining Cathedral’s current financial health, as well as planning for its financial future. 2014-15 has been an exciting year for the Institutional Advancement Committee, and I’d like to share some of the highlights with you. One hundred percent of Cathedral families contributed to the 2014-15 Annual Fund. The
Annual Fund helps close the gap between Cathedral’s operating budget and revenue from tuition. Our dedicated Annual Fund co-chairs, Deb Brown and Mendy Gonzales, led the past giving season with energy, not to mention a creative, funny, parent-produced video encouraging our community to give. With the help of parent volunteers who personally solicited pledges, and the generosity of the Cathedral families and friends who gave, the Annual Fund raised more than $694,900, a 12% increase over the year before. The facilities updates made possible by the Inspiring Spaces, Inspiring Minds Capital Campaign are the most tangible proof of generosity to our School. Over the past five years, the campaign has raised more than $6.2 million and funded a beautiful Kindergarten Learning Center, state-of-the-art science labs, renovated art classrooms, and a commercial kitchen, among numerous other improvements. In order to maintain the structural health of our beautiful, historic school building and continue to advance our academic programs so Cathedral students can meet the demands of an ever-changing global landscape, we must strengthen our capital and endowment capacity with major gifts. The success of the Absalom Jones Benefit is critical to Cathedral’s commitment to socioeconomic diversity (as compared to other New York City schools, Cathedral gives twice as much financial aid to twice as many students). This year’s Absalom Jones Benefit was a great success. Co-Chairs Shameka Brown

Barbosa, Amanda Oberg, and Elizabeth Stein skillfully planned a fun-filled evening of food, drink, fellowship, and giving. With the help of 60 volunteers and more than 342 attendees, this year’s Absalom Jones Benefit raised $260,000, enough to support 6.5 full tuitions. The Faculty Professional Development Fund rounded out the year’s advancement successes, raising more than $39,000 to support the continued learning of our teachers and staff. Each year 100% of Cathedral faculty members are offered professional development dollars, a unique benefit that ultimately enhances our children’s educational experience. Cathedral’s finances are strong, our students are thriving, and our community is active and committed. Thank you to all who contributed in any way to Cathedral’s advancement goals. Nothing we do would be possible without the support of Cathedral’s families and friends. You are very much appreciated!

Suported by the Parents Association and the Student Council, the graduating 8th grade class raised funds to secure an important and lasting gift to the school—bleachers for the Crypt Gym. Long on the school’s wish list, these bleachers are retractable, safe, and comfortable and make the best use of the gym’s floor space. We thank the donors listed below for their generosity and the inspired leadership of the Eighth Grade Class Gift Co-Chairs Hailey Kim and Martha Escobar.

ABSALOM JONES BENEFIT
Absalom Jones Benefit each year, the Absalom Jones Benefit furthers The Cathedral
School’s endeavor to maintain a rich, socioeconomically diverse community. All proceeds go to financial aid, which is given to 34% of our student body. The 2015 Absalom Jones Benefit drew a crowd of more than 342 parents, alumni parents, alumni, grandparents, and faculty members to 583 Park Avenue on February 27. More than $260,000 was raised for financial aid. Contributing to the wonderful support of our school’s socioeconomic diversity was the student-inspired and student-driven Hoops from the Heart initiative. Co-Chairs Shameka Brown Barbosa, Amanda Oberg, and Elizabeth Stein led a vibrant committee of dedicated volunteers. We thank them for devoting their time, talents, and energy to a cause that changes students’ lives.

Call from the Heart At the end of each year’s live auction, guests are asked to ponder the unique nature of The Cathedral School during a moment known as Call from the Heart. During this time, the auctioneer’s efforts are directed not at securing the highest single bid for a particular item, but at channeling the love we all have for Cathedral into cash donations (made at all levels of giving) to the school’s financial aid fund. Without the money raised during Call from the Heart, our school would not be able to provide such a substantial amount of financial aid. CALL FROM THE HEART DONORS

Hoops from the Heart Founded in 2014 by two seventh graders who felt strongly about making the Cathedral experience possible for all students regardless of their ability to afford tuition, Hoops from the Heart raises funds to support the Absalom Jones Benefit for financial aid. On a Saturday before the Benefit, the gym is transformed into a lively free-throw competition; every basket the students, faculty, and alumni have made equaled dollars donated to Cathedral by our generous families. In just two years, participants have raised more than $42,000. Hoops from the Heart, with its mission of equity, compassion, and good sportsmanship, epitomizes the true essence of Cathedral School.

Report from the PARENTS ASSOCIATION
SATR INA BOYC E + LUCY C U LVER
2014–2015 PARENTS ASSOCIATION Officers Satrina Boyce and Lucy Culver Co-Presidents Rachel Strickland Upper School Vice President Laura Gallo Lower School Vice President Diana Leddy Vice President of Communications/ Secretary Susan Volante Treasurer
the cathedral school Parents
Association seeks to build a strong sense of community in ways that actively support the school’s educational mission. Our motto— “Be Involved”—activates that strong sense of community among parents, students, faculty, and administrators. The PA’s mission is three-fold: • To facilitate open and constructive communication among parents, faculty, and administrators; • To host community and fundraising events that build social bonds and foster trust and dedication; and • To support the fundraising and other goals set each year by the Head of School and Board of Trustees. To this end, the PA sponsors educational and fundraising events to support our school and acts as a liaison between parents, faculty, and administration. The PA co-presidents also serve
28
as members of The Cathedral School’s Board of Trustees. Each class has one PA representative (two per grade) who works with teachers to keep parents up-to-date on classroom activities, school-wide events, and any issues affecting the students. Class representatives also organize parent social events and act as communication links for their class parents to the PA Executive Board and school administration. The PA’s mission repeatedly came to life during the 2014–15 school year through the many events we hosted, opportunities brought to the community, funds raised, and support given to faculty, staff, administrators, and families. Highlights include the following: • During two weeks in November, 11 celebrated authors and illustrators visited The Cathedral School as part of our 2014 Book Fair. These authors and illustrators regaled Cathedral students with readings, writing workshops, productions, discussions, and personalized books. In December, parents enjoyed an evening of shopping and socializing as the Book Fair Parent Cocktail Party, held at The Cathedral House. More than 100 volunteers ensured that this premier event nourished families’ minds while raising over $2,600. • Thanks to more than 275 parent, student, faculty, and staff volunteers, our beloved Spring Fair transformed the Close on May 30 into a festive celebration of our community. Cathedral families, friends, and an unprecedented number of alumni enjoyed a day of games, music, rides, karaoke, dunk tank, Second Hand Treasures sale, Run for Fun, and our unbeatable homemade food. The Spring Fair raised approximately $4,000. • Thanks to our two Used Uniform Sales, families got some amazing deals on uniforms for their children while cleaning their closets. Approximately 20 volunteers collected, sorted, set up, and sold donated used uniforms and winter clothing to the Cathedral community. Unsold items were donated to the Cathedral Community Cares. Thanks to the efforts of our volunteers and families who donated or purchased uniforms, more than $3,700 was raised.

Report from the PARENTS ASSOCIATION
• T he winter holidays were celebrated in grand style, beginning with our merry band of approximately 25 “elves” who transformed the first floor into a winter wonderland. The delight and awe on the students’ faces when seeing the transformation made all of the weekend hours volunteers spent working worth every minute. The winter celebration continued with Winterfest, our annual school-wide holiday party. Thanks to more than 90 volunteers, the Cathedral community enjoyed an afternoon of holiday music, games, crafts, food, and general merry-making. Proceeds from the sale of poinsettias and baked goods at Winterfest enabled us to make a $1,000 donation to Cathedral Community Cares. • Enrichment opportunities were offered to the community, including a PA-sponsored evening of conversation with Lisa Friel, Vice President of Sexual Misconduct Consulting and Investigations at T&M Protection Resources. This discussion gave parents an overview of how to keep children safe through best practices of dealing with harassment. • The PA partnered with the school’s Diversity Department and POSOC to host a Cathedral Parent Identity Workshop entitled “Connecting the Dots: Equity, Justice, Identity, and Affinity at The Cathedral School.” • Community enrichment opportunities continued through the PA’s partnership with organizations, including Parents in Action, the New York International Children’s Film Festival, and The Parents League. • We debuted a new “fun”-raising event in February by hosting an All-School Ice Skating Party at Lasker Rink in Central Park. Cathedral families of all ages turned out for an evening of winter fun on the ice. Due to the enormous success of the event, the All-School Ice Skating Party is now an annual PA event. • In the spring, the PA organized a family photographic fundraiser by offering Cathedral families the opportunity to be photographed on the Close at a discounted rate by professional photographer Nicholas Mrnarevic. Approximately $2,000 was raised as 50% of
the session fee and 25% of the print/product fees went to the PA. • Cathedral-branded gear was sold throughout the spring as the PA answered families’ requests for school logo items. Approximately $1,200 was raised. We fostered community spirit with other “fun”-raising events such as all-school picnics, class parent cocktail parties and dinners, Upper School Donut Day, and 8th grade graduation gifts. Once again, the PA partnered with graduating eighth grade parents on its gift to the school— new retractable bleachers for the Crypt Gym. The PA made a generous donation to the Faculty Professional Development Fund and underwrote expenses associated with the Absalom Jones Benefit. Cathedral faculty, administration, and staff were feted at the annual “Thank You” party with cash gifts. When Cathedral faculty and staff were met with personal challenges during the year, the PA assisted with support by making memorial donations to various charities, including purchasing books for the Cathedral library. Open communication between the school and parents is also a key function of the PA. Parents received weekly emails from their class representatives that highlighted important school announcements. The PA News was emailed throughout the year. The PA Executive Committee met monthly with senior administration to discuss issues important to parents and students. Constant communication between parents, faculty, staff, and administrators strengthened our community and led to greater understanding and collaboration among all constituencies. It is clear that parents play a vital role in our community. All of our “fund” and “fun” raising activities couldn’t happen without the involvement of our families. Many thanks to all of our dedicated parents who volunteer their time, talent, and energy to The Cathedral School Parents Association. 2014–15 was a banner year for The Cathedral School community, and we look forward to another exciting year ahead!

Report on CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
Ways to Give EVERY GIFT TO CATHEDRAL COUNTS. Listed below are options to consider when making your gift.
CASH Gifts may be made by cash, check, or credit card. For your convenience, you can give online at www. cathedralnyc.org/giving. STOCKS OR SECURITIES A gift of appreciated stock generally offers a two-fold tax saving: avoiding capital gains tax on the increase in value of the stock and providing an income tax deduction for the full market value of the stock at the time of the gift. Gifts of stock are valued at the median price on the date of transfer to The Cathedral School. To donate appreciated long-term securities, please contact Yelka Kamara at ykamara@cathedralnyc.org. MATCHING CORPORATE GIFTS Many employers will match employees’ donations. This opportunity presents an additional
source of income for The Cathedral School and an easy way to leverage your gift into a larger donation. To find out if your company participates in a matching gift program, check with your Human Resources Department or log on to www. matchinggifts.com/cathedralnyc. Donors must initiate the Matching Gift process, so be sure to secure the proper forms to forward with your gift to the School. Donors to Cathedral are given credit for both their original gift and any Matching Gift they secure. GIFTS-IN-KIND Items such as computers, software, professional services, and athletic equipment that provide operational savings and meet specific needs may be donated to The Cathedral School. The school does not assign a dollar value to gifts-in-kind.
PLANNED GIFTS Donors may consider giving through such means as life insurance, bequests, or charitable trusts. Gift planning can be a way to reduce or avoid estate and inheritance taxes. We encourage you to speak with your financial planner when considering any type of planned gift. The school is pleased to provide you, your attorney, account, or tax advisor with additional information and assistance. Keep in mind that this information is general in nature. Always contact your professional tax advisor to learn how this general information relates to your individual circumstances. We are most grateful for your philanthropic support. FOR MORE INFORMATION, please contact Jennifer Rhodes at 212-3167509 or jrhodes@cathedralnyc.org.
