A MESSAGE FROM

OUR CHAIR

The United Way of the Eastern Panhandle, Inc. Board of Directors meets quarterly.

Board Officers Charla Cody

Josh Householder

Vice President, Bank of Charles Town United Way of the Eastern Panhandle, Inc. Board Chairman, 2014

Our objective at United Way is simple – to improve the lives of our Eastern Panhandle neighbors. United Way works collectively with businesses, individuals and government entities to address our community’s most pressing needs. We do this by supporting programs that are building blocks for selfsufficiency - education, income and health. Our volunteers then honestly evaluate the effectiveness of these programs to ensure that our donors receive the highest return on their investment. This year, our United Way allocated over $250,000 in critical funding to the programs of our non-profit partner agencies within our community. Through our Annual Campaign, we provided over $260,000 to many other non-profits in the region. However, the requests for funding this year exceeded $600,000. The residual impact of a soft economy continues to be seen. Many of our friends and neighbors find themselves in a position of needing the support of one of the United Way funded agencies. The funds you contribute to United Way play a vital role in creating a better life within our community by providing a safe environment to a victim of domestic violence, delivering early childhood education through our day care collaborative, or offering financial counseling to a recently unemployed mother, and so much more. Your donations, volunteer support, and advocacy support much needed change throughout the Eastern Panhandle. As we embark on our 2014-2015 United Way Campaign, we thank you for your contributions in years past. And, we ask that you consider increasing your investment in our community this year. We welcome and encourage you to join us to: GIVE Today, CHANGE Tomorrow! You’ll be glad you did.

OUR MISSION: The mission of the United Way of the Eastern Panhandle (UWEP) is to mobilize the community through volunteerism, advocacy and resource development to improve the education, income and health status of residents in Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan Counties. UWEP achieves its mission by serving as a community leader that builds and strengthens partnerships with service providers and other sectors of the community to address our most pressing health and human service issues.

YOUR DOLLARS AT WORK The United Way of the Eastern Panhandle continues to operate in a solid financial position. Our fiscal year ending June 30, 2014 produced a total community campaign that netted $834,000 from the generosity of our community at large. Community Donations are designated to the Community Solutions Fund, which includes Basic Needs and Community Impact grants. In addition, donations are utilized as specific Agency Distributions or other United Way expenses in the areas of marketing, management, fundraising, and contract administration. This allows for the strategic development of effective community solutions and initiatives that make a lasting change in the areas of education, income, and healthcare stability.

OUR CEO Pete Mulford

President/CEO

Last year, I stated my excitement at the selection of our 2013/14 Theme of “Making a Difference”. It was based upon the knowledge that all we do at our United Way is intended to make THAT difference for the thousands of people served by the activities our volunteers and partners. The efforts of our own staff, community leaders, and the thousands of citizens that support us in fund/friend raising, volunteering, and advocating for important causes are working! I can now offer a very big, and heartfelt, THANK YOU to everyone who has been part of this important year. Notably, we not only reached, but exceeded our Community Campaign Goal, having raised over $820,000! It took a real great TEAM, challenged by previously tough economic times and results, to step up and set new, higher, and more compelling goals. And we did it! Likewise, the results of the campaign have enabled a great group of community volunteers to carefully evaluate and increase the grants that we provide to our non-profit agency partners.

IT STARTS WITH YOU and the best part:

99% raised here, stays here in Berkeley, Jefferson, and Morgan Counties!

The Emerging Young Leaders (EYL) program we started this past year is a huge success, again thanks to many young professionals that have led the charge. We know we can do much more. So we challenge ourselves to think “What If?” What if everyone working in the Eastern Panhandle stepped up and contributed only one hour pay to our Community Campaign, or through their Combined Federal Campaign. What if everyone volunteered to join a local non-profit and helped work on the many service gaps that exist in our communities? What if we all stood up to advocate for the needs of others? This coming year will provide the opportunity to do just that. Remember that 99% of what we raise stays in our community, and 100% of what we volunteer and advocate for resonates right here! Join us by staying engaged, energized, and excited about what we can do together to improve our community. LIVE UNITED!
