Chairperson’s Message Through the implementation of Sport NSW’s strategic plan Sport NSW seeks to build the profile and capacity of sport in New South Wales through collaboration and partnerships that will ensure the New South Wales community benefits from opportunities in organised sport at least equal to those in other Australian states and territories. We acknowledge with thanks the contribution of the NSW Government and The Hon. Stuart Ayres MP, Minister for Sport and Recreation and previous Minister for Sport and Recreation and now Minister for Family and Community Services, The Hon. Gabrielle Upton MP for the support provided in advancing the cause of Sport NSW. Through the newly formed Advocacy Committee Sport NSW looks to crystalize its key messaging and work closer with government to increase the core funding of sport peak bodies – which is currently proportionally lower than any other Australian state, improving systems of delivery through a whole of government approach, and improved equity of opportunity to ensure all sections of the community benefit from community sport participation. Sport NSW acknowledges the funding received through the auspices of the Office of Sport, Sport & Recreation Division including the additional support provided during the year to support the Community Sports Volunteer Awards and governance training. Sport NSW also acknowledges our sponsors OAMPS Insurance Brokers, NSW Sporting Injuries, Sydney Olympic Park Authority, eCorner, Pitcher Partners and Meltwater Group, and partner organisations Lander and Rogers Lawyers, Australian Institute of Company Directors, Sports Community, Australian Sports Commission and University of Technology, Sydney. We recognise the achievements of member organisations during 2013-14 and extend our appreciation for support of Sport NSW and the initiatives therein. Congratulations are also extended to those associated with the successful delivery of the Sports Awards Dinner and the Community Sports Volunteer Awards Presentation. These signature events provide opportunity to celebrate and recognise the achievements of athletes, officials, coaches, administrators and organisations across the past 12 months. I congratulate the Sport NSW Board for its commitment to the promotion of sport in New South Wales and its preparedness to pursue standards of the highest order. In particular I pay thanks to outgoing Deputy Chair Carolyn Campbell and Director Michelle Hanley who have served the Federation over the past six years and a very personal thanks to Frances Crampton AM for her most valued assistance during the transition between CEO’s. Our warm thanks go to Chief Executive Cheryl Battaerd for her contribution to the Federation and sport in New South Wales as the Federation prepares for an important year. Chief Executive Officer’s Report It is a privilege to have been offered the opportunity in October 2013 to lead NSW Sports Federation as right from the early days of my sports management career, the NSW Sports Federation had a very positive impact on my own professional growth, in the development of valuable networks in the sport sector and ultimately on the organisations I managed. I truly believe in the worth and importance of the

Collaborative Partnerships

Federation for organisations and individuals in the

Delivering services in today’s ever changing environment requires us to be strongly engaged in collaborative partnerships, with other agencies, government and with our members and businesses. In November 2013 our strengthened partnership with the Office of Sport, Sport and Recreation Division was endorsed through the awarding of a contract to coordinate a series of governance training courses delivered by the Australian Institute of Company Directors and with joint delivery of other forums designed to support growth and optimise the business of sport.

New South Wales sport and active recreation sector. I also have a great deal of optimism that the value will continue to increase through our service areas of advocacy, knowledge share, and recognition and networking. This annual report publishes our highlights and achievements. For me, it is also an opportunity to celebrate the commitment and dedication of our small team, our Board members, volunteers and our partners in their support of our governance, strategy and service delivery. In the first half of the 2013-14 financial year there were some challenges facing the Federation, however with the expert guidance of the Federation’s Board and the skills and experience of Life Member, Frances Crampton AM acting in the CEO role, it was a period of consolidation that presented a perfect platform for change, growth and building of partnerships in the second half of the financial year. One of the early changes was to trade under the name of Sport NSW. We are still incorporated as NSW Sports Federation however the Board decided that the contemporary name was in line with renaming of other sporting peak bodies and represented the fresh approach to the business of representing and servicing our members and in building the profile of sport in New South Wales.

Other organisations we worked with in the delivery of information sharing and networking events included; the Australian Sports Commission, NSW Sporting Injuries, Lander and Rogers Lawyers, Smart Connection Company ‘Power of Sport Conference’, Sports Community and the Australian Institute of Company Directors with their Sport Breakfast events. Working with the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) has provided the opportunity for 10 of their students to get valuable work and project experience in the sport sector which in turn provided significant benefits to our organisation and in due time to our members when our Members Only Intranet and the projects they are working on are finalised. A strategic and collaborative approach is necessary to address the factors that affect participation in community sport in New South Wales and investment is required in the building of capability of sport organisations to increase participation and ensure there is equity in access for the people of New South Wales. We will be advocating and working with our members, partners and the Government to ensure that more people, more often, derive the benefits of community sport in this state.

Governance and Performance

Governance Training

A key focus for Sport NSW in 2013-14 was to concentrate on governance processes, our strategic priorities, building value for members and effective relations with key stakeholders.

The Board Director Education program was designed to enhance the board directorship skills of current and future state sport organisation board members. The courses were customised by the deliverer, the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) for the Not-for-Profit Sports Industry and funded through a grant from the Office of Sport, Sport and Recreation Division. Seventy five sporting directors participated in the courses; One Day Governance for Not-for-Profit Directors which covered the fundamental compliance and performance related roles and responsibilities of directors, Three Day Foundations of Directorship provided participants with an understanding of fundamental compliance and performance related roles and responsibilities of directors, specifically in the areas of governance, risk, financial performance and strategy, The Role of the Not-For-Profit Chairperson course provided an in-depth analysis of the Chairperson’s accountabilities and relationships with other board members and the Chief Executive Officer. This presented an excellent opportunity to discuss common issues such as board selection, board processes, communication, CEO succession planning and the unique challenges facing Not-For-Profit boards, with fellow Chairs.

Forums and Seminars Sport NSW Members’ Forum: covering Social Media, Supporting Your Clubs – Resources and Training, Workers Compensation Reforms and an NSWIS Update, Sport Integrity Forum and Panel session in partnership with Lander & Rogers Lawyers, Power of Sport Expo; facilitated the conference’s Driving Participation and Innovative Sports Programs streams, Growing

Board of Directors The NSW Sports Federation’s Constitution sets out that the Board is comprised of seven Elected Directors and three Appointed Directors. At the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in October 2013, two new Directors were elected to the Board, Nicola Bethwaite, CEO of Women’s Bowls NSW and Greg Meagher, CEO Athletics NSW. We are appreciative of Cheryl Williams who served the Board well but retired due to work commitments prior to the AGM. After ten years and a significant contribution to the governance of NSW Sports Federation, Peter Tate also retired from the Board. Following the AGM the appointed directors; Paul Tubridy, Paul Bruce and Phill Bates AM also retired. All three men have made a considerable contribution to the organisation and the Board and staff are grateful for their service and support of the NSW Sports Federation. Phill Bates AM was the founding Chairperson of the NSW Sports Federation in 1991 and served on the Board for 16 years, his passion and dedication to sport in New South Wales is second to none. In April 2014 three new appointed directors Fay Calderone, Megan Lavender and Katherine O’Regan joined the Board bringing extensive skills, experience and networks in the legal, corporate, government, sport and non-profit sectors.
