William Shakespeare, the most famous dramatist of all time, wrote in one of his plays that “some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them”. Looking at the lustrous career of the reigning Straight Egyptian World Champion Stallion, Naseem Al Rashediah (Al Adeed Al Shaqab x Nabaweyyah Ezzain by Ansata Almurtajiz), I am under the impression that he personifies not one, but all three types of greatness as defined by the famous English playwright. Being one of the most spectacular young stallions of our times, Naseem combines his noble heritage with amazing achievements as a successful show champion and a superb sire. Simply a show horse supreme and already a proven producer at the young age of seven, he seems to have achieved it all. Is there

anything left for this gorgeous grey stallion to prove in the prime of his life? Actually, he does not need to prove anything but he has all the potential to go one step further and make history as the first Straight Egyptian horse in the recent years to successfully compete against the finest horses of mixed origin. As befits a double SE World Champion Stallion in both Junior and Senior categories, Naseem steps into the 2021 show season on a high note, participating in one of the most prestigious championships organised on the Old Continent, The Mediterranean and Arab Countries Arabian Horse Championships held annually in Menton, a fashionable tourist centre in the French Riviera, just a stone’s throw from the Franco-Italian border. However, Naseem is no stranger to the spectacular scenery of the Menton

show, which for the last 30 years have gathered the most remarkable representatives of the Arabian breed. In 2017, as a three-year-old, he became Silver Champion Junior Colt, beating such incredible individuals as the charismatic Cyclone OS (RFI Farid x Inspired Najla by Ajman Moniscione), many times international champion.

This year, Naseem comes back in his fame and glory of the reigning SE World Champion to once again prove that he was born great to become even greater.

to achieve greatness? Is it the exquisite Arabian type, aristocratic refinement, noble presence, commanding charisma, correct conformation or powerful movement?

There is one simple answer: a perfectly balanced combination of all these qualities is the recipe for success in the showring. However, achieving greatness may be much more challenging than it seems, especially for a breeding stallion. Not only does he need to become a recognised show champion, but he is also required to prove himself in a breeding barn by repeatedly stamping

For some, breeding such a horse is just a dream, while for others, it becomes reality.

The determination, engagement and passion of the whole team at the world-famous Al Rashediah Stud in Bahrain and a unique breeding philosophy of Mr. Rashed Abdulrahman Al Jasmi have resulted in breeding an incomparable individual who is on a good path to become a living legend. All the way through, Rashed was fully supported by his father, Mr. Abdulrahman Al Jasmi, who has trusted in his vision from the moment Al Rashediah was established in 2007. Also, the help and dedication of the recently appointed general manager of the stud, Franck Boetto, should not be underestimted or forgotten, as he is the one who takes care of the physical and mental wellbeing of the Al Rashediah priceless pearls. Surrounded by people that love and care about him, Naseem Al Rashediah is much more than a promising young stallion. With his extraordinary record of accomplishment, both in the showring and in the breeding barn, he has already gained a reputation of one of the most sensational and successful young stallions in the Straight Egyptian breeding world. A world that undoubtedly has its challenges and limitations due to a fairly restricted number of existing SE bloodlines.

But the breeder of Naseem, being fully aware of his greatness, have no desire to limit his influence to the SE world alone.

According to Rashed Al Jasmi, Naseem’s greatness needs to be shared with the world as “he has several very important and desirable characteristics that are much needed 32 • Desert Heritage Magazine

in the Arabian horse world, particularly in the Straight Egyptian horse. He is a balanced, correct and complete horse with a heart-stopping charisma, a refined, almost perfectly shaped head and astonishing black skin”. Franck Boetto adds his own opinion on the stallion, saying that “Naseem is the pure essence of the Arabian horse; a unique SE stallion of an extremely refined type, eye-catching charisma, correct conformation and powerful movement, which brings him closer to today’s show horse standard and allows him to compete against the best representatives of the breed”. It would be difficult not to agree with Rashed and Franck. This strikingly handsome young stallion has it all: an authentic Arabian type that goes hand in hand with a harmonious, well-balanced build and an alluring magnetism that captivates both the spectators and the judges. As if it was not enough, Naseem has been blessed with an exotic, perfectly proportioned head

with small, beautifully shaped ears, black intelligent eyes, deep round jowls and dark vascular muzzle, which combined with a long elegant neck, set highly on a wellmuscled shoulder, short back and impressive upright tail carriage, create a picture of an Arabian stallion that is close to perfection.

All these superb qualities Naseem exhibited from the day he was born. This is how Rashed remembers this special moment: “I was so excited when I saw Naseem for the first time! He was one of our first foals by Al Adeed Al Shaqab. More importantly, he possessed all the qualities and conformational traits that we were hoping to get from crossing his sire with his dam. These two beautiful but very different types of SE horses in both conformation and pedigree produced a young colt that not only exhibited the best features of both his sire and dam, but also represented

much needed diversity of bloodlines. He seemed to realize from birth that he was destined for greatness and he proudly showed off his beautiful head with extremely large black eyes and a remarkably refined muzzle. He had an excellent sloping shoulder with a neck that was wonderfully set and shaped. His back was short and he possessed a deep loin and excellent strong hip and croup, topped off with a tail that he held up high and straight. He also possessed all the charisma that could be packed into such a young colt. We could not have been more delighted!”

Just one look at Naseem’s impressive pedigree is enough to understand where his classic Arabian type and distinct desert beauty come from. Without a doubt, his greatness stems from the concentration of legendary individuals in his bloodlines as well as the genetic diversity of his sire and dam. Being a direct descendant of the legendary

Nazeer, Naseem proudly carries on the legacy of Saklawi I 1886, the most significant and successful sire line of today. Sired by the World Champion Stallion Al Adeed Al Shaqab and out of a beautiful bay Ansata Hejazi granddaughter Nabaweyyah Ezzain, Naseem combines the most desirable traits of both bloodlines.

Even though his sire and dam were genotypically and phenotypically different, the final outcome in the form of a gorgeous grey colt proved that this combination was a match made in heaven. Naseem’s unforgettable sire, Al Adeed Al Shaqab, himself the embodiment of an excellent Arabian stallion, was a very successful show horse and a sire of great significance. Many times national and international champion, in 2003 Al Adeed reached for the well-deserved World Champion Stallion title, the most prestigious trophy in his spectacular career. His influence as a breeding stallion should not be underestimated. As the last and, at the same time, the most prominent son of Ansata Halim Shah, he was widely used across SE and non-SE breeding programmes in the Middle East, Europe and in the

USA. Every inch his father’s son, Naseem exhibits many traits that Al Adeed Al Shaqab inherited from his own outstanding sire. Ansata Halim Shah, who is considered one the most influential Straight Egyptian Arabians of the 20th century, was highly admired for his abundant Arabian type and perfectly balanced conformation. An even closer look at Naseem’s lineages reveals the extent of Nazeer’s incomparable influence on both his genotype and phenotype. Ansata Ibn Halima and Morafic, who are considered the cornerstones of the breed as well as Nazeer’s most prominent sons, appear in Naseem’s pedigree several times. With all the unpredictability of breeding, such a concentration of priceless genes must have resulted in a superior individual. The excellence of Saklawi I sire line in Naseem’s genotype and phenotype is further enhanced by his exceptional dam, the reigning queen of the Al Rashediah Stud -Nabaweyyah Ezzain.

This priceless pearl of Bahrain once again confirmed her value as a broodmare during the 2020 Straight Egyptian World Championships, where Naseem’s maternal halfbrother Al Ghazi Al Rashediah (by Jamil Al Rayyan) became Gold Junior Champion Colt.

As a two-year-old colt, he already reached for the highest trophy at the 2016 Straight Egyptian World Championships. He won his class with a very high score of 93.38 points and became unanimous Gold Junior Champion Colt. Only a year after his triumph at the SE World Championships, he proved that he can compete with non-SE Arabians too and achieve amazing success. At the 2017 Menton show, Naseem again stood on the podium as a Silver Junior Champion Colt. However, it was his most recent win during the 2020 Straight Egyptian World Championships in Milan that established him as a showring phenomenon.

With a spectacular score of 93.88 points, including maximum notes for type, head and neck and 2x20 for movement, Naseem remained undefeated throughout the whole show. Not only did he become unanimous Gold Champion Stallion, but he also reinforced his leading position with the unanimous Best in Show Male title.

Rashed seemed very pleased but not overly surprised with the wonderful victory of his stallion: “Overall, Naseem has a sense of confidence about himself and he easily

shows it. He is easy to manage and handle, but in a blink of an eye he turns into a fiery and beautiful show horse that demands everyone’s attention! He is a natural born ruler!”

His most recent presentation confirmed that he is the unquestionable King of the Ring! And he knows it! He carries himself with such confidence and dignity that all eyes are on him when he enters the showring.

As befits a fully accomplished stallion, Naseem rules not only in the showring, but also in the breeding barn. His progeny are the living proof of their sire’s great genetic

prepotency. His fantastic foals follow his lead as show champions, repeatedly winning the highest trophies at some of the most prestigious shows. It is enough to mention the most recent SE World Championships, where two outstanding yearlings by Naseem, an exotic grey filly Ayah Al Fala (out of Zumorroda Al Waab

by Barraq El Aliya) and a handsome grey colt Salam Akmal (out of Salmma BKV by Mouadaar BKV), became unanimous Gold Champion Yearling Filly and Gold Champion Yearling Colt respectively. There is no better way to demonstrate the value of a sire than to Desert Heritage Magazine • 37

have his two foals reaching for Gold Champion titles in the yearling sections at the same time as their father becomes Gold Champion as a senior stallion.

When I asked Rashed about his favourite offspring by Naseem, this is what he told me: “Well, this is a difficult question as my favourite foal by him changes constantly. I am often amazed at the shows when each of his foals ends up beating the next. I will not be surprised if tomorrow my opinion will change again. I shall leave it to the breeders to decide which cross with Naseem works best in their opinion.”

Franck added his own bit to it: “Naseem is already a proven producer, with many outstanding offspring around the globe, all of whom have the same Naseem look, personality and characteristics. This is what the breeders need to change the future of the Straight Egyptian Arabian horse.”

Naseem surely is a remarkable representative of the breed. What is the best word to describe him?

According to his breeder and owner it is “Extraordinary!

There is nothing every-day or ordinary about this stallion.

He possesses that rare combination of a spectacular classic pedigree with excellent conformation and extreme type that he consistently passes onto his offspring. In my opinion, there could not be a more relevant SE stallion in the world today. Due to his diverse bloodlines and excellent refinement and type, he is a sight for sore eyes for breeders that are looking for ways to move their breeding programmes forward.”

Naseem’s undoubtable extraordinariness reinforces Rashed’s confidence in his capabilities to compete and win in Menton. When asked about his feelings regarding this year’s participation, he said without hesitation: “on pins and needles; anxious, nervous, and stressed is exactly the opposite to what I am feeling right now. I am surprisingly calm yet eager and full of excitement to see Naseem do what he does best, which is beating the odds, as he already did as a young colt in the same showring.

However, this time he comes back for the title that he truly deserves, not only in my opinion but also in the view of the wider Arabian horse community. I cannot be more thankful and touched by all the support shown from numerous breeders and trainers who belong to the Arabian horse world that we all truly love and cherish”. After reflecting for a moment, Rashed added: “Naseem‘s participation in Menton shall drastically change the future of the Arabian horse breed, especially the Straight Egyptian one. I think it is about time for the breed to be set on the right course towards a brighter future for all breeders so that this special breed can advance and evolve to the levels we would not

have expected. It has been said that history is written by the victorious, particularly by those who shall not yield until the victory and throne are rightfully theirs. That is Naseem’s road ahead and that is what he will do and he shall so do so righteously and victoriously as he was born great, has achieved greatness, and has had greatness thrust upon him.” Franck Boetto also seemed to be pretty positive about Naseem’s upcoming performance in France: “Naseem is the new generation of Straight Egyptian horse.

With complete conformation and amazing attitude, he is an excellent show horse but, at the same time, he has not lost the typical Egyptian look. He has already proven his value as a show champion winning the 2020 SE World Championships in Milan, which was a dream come true and one of the most emotional moments in my career.”

Is Naseem an ideal Arabian horse? If we ever get to the point where we breed an Arabian horse that has no flaws, the whole idea of breeding will no longer make sense. Is Naseem close to perfection? Both his impressive show career and his successes as a breeding stallion leave no doubt that he sets a standard which reaches far beyond the Straight Egyptian breeding world. Is Naseem the embodiment of greatness? Without a doubt, the reigning Straight Egyptian World Champion Stallion continues to grow more beautiful each year while also becoming invaluable as a sire. Is Naseem ready to claim the throne in Menton? At a very young age, he has already achieved more than most Straight Egyptian Arabians manage to achieve throughout their entire lifetimes or even generations. And that would not be the first time when, against all odds, he makes his mark on the Menton showground.

When William Shakespeare was writing “Twelfth Night” more than 400 years ago, he surely did not expect that his words will be still valid in the 21st century. In his wildest dreams, he could not have imagined that his poetic verses will be used to describe an Arabian stallion.

But this stallion is far from being one of many. He is a remarkable representative of both the Straight Egyptian horse and the entire breed who fully deserves this honour and privilege. Naseem has all the potential to make history; not only his own personal story of success but also the history of the Arabian breed. Menton was a tough competition, many possible champions stepped on the ground of this important arena to win.

Naseem in the hands of Giacomo Capacci has shown to the world its inestimable value, bringing to Menton its unmistakable genetics of Straight Egyptian and the pure essence of the Arabian horse. By winning the bronze medal in Menton and the most beautiful head as a stallion he confirmed that he is an excellent representative of the breed and a winner. With this medal and the special trophy he told the world that a change in the Straight Egyptian world is taking place and that he is the bearer of this change.

The road has been crossed, from now on the honor and privilege that the Straight Egyptians deserve will become a standard because the foundation stone of this road has been laid. By him and by his breeder Al Jasmi Family of Al Rashediah Stud.

Naseem Al Rashediah will forever be credited with setting a standard beyond the world of straight Egyptians. He has years of satisfaction ahead of him and still a road of growth and success. This is just the beginning of his rise.

Monika: We at Desert Heritage Magazine are very happy to do an interview with you about your well-known straight Egyptian Nasmat stud in Colorado. We hope to learn more about your breeding goal. You are a single mother, have 4 children and 40 Arabian horses, how do

you manage it all? Tell us about your life with kids and horses there.

Alicia: Yes, I am a widow since 2014. After my husband’s passing, I did not want to give up on my dream of breeding horses, Desert Heritage Magazine • 61

even though it seemed impossible and ill advised to continue and assume all of the labour as one person, myself. The kids, 4 boys, are great but I don’t push them to be a part of the ranch, I understand this is my dream and they are individuals, I think when they grow up they may appreciate being raised outside of town and some of the unique things they have experienced here. I also breed English Cream Golden Retrievers and Bernese Mountain Dogs, something that started as a one-time project for one of the kids and ended up being something that the kids and I really enjoy.

Monika: We have known each other for many years and I am thrilled by your enthusiasm to continue and to refine your breeding concept, despite many setbacks in the stud. It is great that we can pass on your experience to the readers.

Alicia: I was honored to be offered the opportunity to tell you about my vision, my program, what I am working on currently. I just missed the presentations at Nagel’s Katharinenhof, El Thay and Al Qusar stud, a real disappointment for me to miss presentations at some of the studs I follow so closely, but with the state of the world, and the state of affairs at the ranch I couldn’t afford to leave.

So I find myself here, reflecting, dreaming…this summer of 2021 has been a whirlwind, I have delivered 15 foals, with many injuries and a couple surgeries….I have barely had 62 • Desert Heritage Magazine

time to stop and think, let alone breed…so I guess I’ll have a strange late foal crop next year. As far as the kids, they are good, in and out of school with all the covid dysfunction.

Monika: How did you start to breed and what was your breeding goal?

Alicia: If you ask me to define my program, I will tell you honestly. It is a cross of very well thought out planned breeding’s and a percentage of accidents. Almost every year inevitably, I have young colts that I am still assessing, break out and breed mares. They are all in keeping with my program, and nice enough to be standing here. I am ok with it as I am curious about mare’s choice of stallions, the choices that the horses make and taking small steps outside of my plans.

As far as why I started breeding, I fell in love with a Straight Egyptian stallion, and eventually leased a mare to breed to him. My breeding goal is to create a certain signature type of SE horse, breeding some of the bloodlines, which pull me, move me and inspire me most. Sometimes it is more evident what it is not at first, then what it is…but over the years, I have evolved and shaped my vision, keeping and focusing on the horses that move my vision forward. I have concurrently the majority of my horses here

in Colorado, USA, and a small group of mares that I maintain in Europe and breed to stallions that I cannot access in the USA. Monika: Do you go more by sight when choosing stallions or do you look at the pedigree first?

Alicia: Normally I see pictures of stallions that grab my attention, and then I move to the pedigree to see if it has components, horses that I like. Unfortunately, I have not had the opportunity to see too many of the stallions that I breed to in person, so I have to rely on photos and video, and assessing the stallion’s other offspring to make a decision. I am equally as inclined to breed to a stallion in someone’s backyard as to a show champion. I understand that not many stallions are shown, or have the same opportunity to be a show horse, and then there are pre-determined winners in shows and everything else, so while I love shows, they are fun and beautiful, I do not put a lot of emphasis on them.

Having said that about shows, I loved the Noble Festival 4 years ago in Holland, it was an amazing way to see the visions of different breeders and display their work. It was nice to see the different but signature looks each breeder was representing. I would love to have a showcase like this in the USA for breeders.

Monika: How come that you buy many horses in Europe?

How is the market in the USA today? It was the cradle of Straight Egyptians 20-30 years ago, right after El Zahraa.

What has changed there?

Alicia: I ended up buying a handful of mares in Europe because that is where I found the bloodlines and type that I was looking for to compliment some of my horses here. I am not sure 100 percent on this, but it feels like here in the USA we have lost some of our biggest and most important breeders of Straight Egyptians. There are still a few and more small breeders that breed a few foals every year. I think people stopped breeding because they are afraid of the market, afraid of the economy, maybe they have retired, they sold out to the Middle East, I mean sold their best stock overseas or many other reasons. I think horse ownership in general is exciting to people after Covid lockdown, and a lot of our Straight Egyptians in the lower price points are going into pet homes that don’t have any idea what they are.

Monika: What is the Pyramid Society doing today? It is so quiet on the other side of the Atlantic. Or have the members simply grown old and the young breeders of today are more 64 • Desert Heritage Magazine

Alicia: The Pyramid Society still exists but I do not know what they represent or what any of their activities are. I was a member several years ago and had my contact information published in a book, and attended a meeting and presentation at the Scottsdale Arabian Horse show. I love the idea of the Pyramid Society, where likeminded breeders can share and collaborate and would love to see it become reinvigorated.

Monika: At the moment you are strongly oriented to the stallions in Europe, especially to the lines of Dr Nagel. Are there already results?

Alicia: Very true. I have an obsession with Dr Nagel’s program, and great appreciation for the study and dedication he has put into his herd. Nasmat Nemty by NK Nabhan (out of Al Ilah Taghria by Emiratus B) is the first colt I have here that is a direct descendant of Nagel’s breeding. He was imported in utero with his mother. The fact that Nagel’s stallions are only live cover in Germany has been

a bit of a logistical issue for me, and I want to send the right mares of course. I bred my black DF Nashwan daughter to NK Nizam and waiting to hear on that breeding. My mare Nesma El Mabrouka by Ajmal Tameen has been bred to NK Jamal El Dine and I am waiting to hear if she will be pregnant.

I also have used stallions such as DF Nashwan and DF Malik Jamil to try to incorporate some of the NK Hafid Jamil blood 66 • Desert Heritage Magazine

into my program. Jamal Al Rashediah is out of an NK Qaswarah daughter so there is some influence as well, and I have a Salaa El Dine daughter.

But I have more projects in Europe: This year I bred my mare Najma ADR by Ansata Nile Echo to Majd Al Qusar, he is a son of NK Lotfy, and I’m waiting to hear if my Salaa El Dine daughter Nahlah Ezzain is in foal to him

too. I am also leasing three mares from my friend and fellow breeder Anne Caroline Dyjeker who have all been bred to Hadban Al Naif, this is a project I have been working on for many years and with enough persistence, I hope to add a foal from Hadban to my herd in the USA someday.

Monika: What about your own stallions? Which of your

breeding have you already used successfully?

Alicia: I have 4 stallions. El Zilal Tamar has been an outstanding sire for me and I am now breeding several of his daughters to Jamal Al Rashediah. Tamar’s son, Nasmat Fahdi is now proven to be a great sire adding some phenomenal type to his foals and I am breeding some mares to him again to try to Desert Heritage Magazine • 67

Monika: You have the beautiful Jamal Al Rashediah with you in Colorado, when will there be the first foals from him?

and for this year’s foal crop my goal was to test my stallion Jamal Al Rashediah heavily. Jamal had to take a break from breeding last year as he was away being shown at a couple of the Scottsdale and Breeders Finals shows. He was reserve champion at his first showing, and third in his second showing, competing against mature stallions.

produces a certain type with some of the closer Ansata blood, and produces beautifully with more open Straight Egyptian pedigrees mares. Between outside breedings and breedings here at home, Jamal had nine offspring in 2021, five fillies and four colts. I will be preparing frozen semen from Jamal to ship to Israel and South Africa in the coming months.

Their natural beauty and charisma in familiar surroundings showed once again how versatile Arabian shows can be, because "natural is the new beauty".

The “three studs event” on the weekend of August 14/15, 2021, is sure to be kept in good memory with many breeders of Arabian horses. The location, Großenkneten, would be labeled “a small place in the middle of nowhere” in the rural North of Germany if, 60 years ago, there had not been Dr Nagel who founded his Katharinenhof Stud there. After what felt like almost two years of lock down because of the corona epidemic, it’s about time that the analogous world of horse breeding would open the gates again, fire up the barbecue grills, and have horses of all ages make their visitors’ hearts beat faster. For a long time now, we had to reduce our communications to mailing, blogging, chatting, posting, and googling, we used our smartphones or laptops for filling our Facebook pages or exchanging WhatsApp news – fully realizing that the Internet would and will exploit all of that input without asking, and that we and our horses have become just another resource of the digital world that way. However, the medial feedback and the great number of “likes” for our horses compensated us for that.

Streamed Arabian Shows were also not really enough to cheer us up, as increasingly, the horses’ personalities get covered up with make-up, choking what is real, pushing annoying entertainment to the foreground instead of information about breeding and about the horses themselves.

Many breeders have been discussing the possible alternatives for digital presentations and the commercial shows, but only a few initiatives have left their mark. Then, however, the three breeders in Großenkneten decided to organize this three studs event. Awesome!

Each one of the three events was an impressive one with extensive programs, and with the neighborly mutual help and support deserving compliments. No matter whether it was about organization, accommodating and catering for guests, speakers, or handlers – everybody helped everybody, and all the events ran smoothly.

Der Drei-Gestüte-Event am Wochenende des 14 und 15. August 2021 wird sicher vielen Züchtern arabischer Pferde positiv in Erinnerung bleiben. Grossenkneten würde man als kleinen Ort „in the middle of nowhere“ im ländlichen Norden Deutschlands bezeichnen, wäre da nicht vor 60 Jahren von Dr. Nagel der Katharinenhof gegründet worden. Einige Jahre später kam auch Dr. Tauschke und das El Thayeba Gestüt und im letzten Jahr gesellte sich Al Qusar Arabians von Robert Schlereth und Volker Wettengl dazu. Heute kann man dort im Umkreis von 10km ein Gesamtkunstwerk der ägyptischen Araberzucht besichtigen, das zu einem internationalen Mekka vieler Züchter geworden ist.

Nach fast zwei Jahren gefühlten Lockdowns aufgrund der Corona-Epidemie, wurde es Zeit, dass die analoge Welt der Pferdezucht wieder ihre Tore aufmachte, den Barbecue anwarf und die Pferde aller Altersgruppen das Herz der Besucher höher schlagen ließen. Lange mussten wir unsere Kommunikation auf mailen, bloggen, chatten, posten, googeln reduzieren, wir hingen am Smartphone oder Laptop, um die Facebook Seiten aufzufüllen oder WhatsApp Nachrichten auszutauschen, im vollen Bewusstsein, dass das Internet alles ungefragt verwertet, und dass wir und unsere Pferde in der digitalen Welt zur Ressource werden. Doch das mediale Feedback und die vielen „likes“ für unsere Pferde trösteten uns darüber hinweg.

Auch die gestreamten Araberschauen konnten uns kaum aufheitern, wird doch die Persönlichkeit eines Pferdes immer mehr weggeschminkt und unterdrückt und im Vordergrund steht nerviges Entertainment und nicht die Information über die Zucht und die Pferde selbst.

Lange schon diskutieren viele Züchter die realen Alternativen zur digitalen Präsentation und den kommerziellen Schauen, doch nur wenige Initiativen haben Spuren hinterlassen. Doch dann trafen die drei Züchter in Grossenkneten die Entscheidung, diesen Drei-Gestüte-Event zu organisieren. Voilà Jeder der drei Events war beeindruckend, das umfangreichen Programm, aber auch die nachbarschaftliche gegenseitige Hilfe verdient ein Kompliment. Ob Organisation, Versorgung der Gäste, Speaker und Vorführer:innen, alle halfen allen und die Events liefen rund.

El Thayeba is a name known world-wide, a brand name you might say, representing a certain type of Egyptian Arabians that has been cultivated in this stud for generations and with international success. 25 horses were shown and explained in-hand and running free. “El Thay knows how to do Arabian shows” might sum it up.

The next morning, Al Qusar Arabians opened their gates for more than a hundred guests from many countries. This stud can pride themselves on 25 years of professional breeding, training, and showing of Egyptian Arabians; not a small feat.

Das El Thayeba Gestüt rund um Cornelia Tauschke, Klaus Beste und Kinder machte den Anfang. El Thay ist ein weit bekannter, man kann sagen Markenname und steht für einen bestimmten Typ der ägyptischen Araber, der über Generationen hinweg in diesem Gestüt mit internationalem Erfolg kultiviert wurde. Es wurden 25 Pferde an der Hand und im Freilauf gezeigt und erklärt.„El Thay kann Araberschau“ könnte man abschließend sagen.

Am nächsten Morgen machte Al Qusar Arabians die Tore auf für die über 100 Gäste aus vielen Ländern. Immerhin kann auch das Gestüt auf 25 Jahre professionelles Züchten mit vielen internationalen Erfolgen, Trainieren und Vorführen von ägyptischen Arabern verweisen. Robert Schlereth und Volker Wettengl waren nach vielen Jahren aus der Lüneburger Heide mit ihren Pferden nach Großenkneten gezogen, um ein altes Bauernhaus zu restaurieren, das heute

Dr Nagel’s Katharinenhof was the last stage of the journey. His experimental stud concept is his life’s work and his lifetime achievement, and there is hardly a breeder of Egyptian horses who has not picked up ideas and motivation for his breeding in the course of the 60 years of the stud’s existence. Dr Nagel has steadfastly refused to make use of social media on the internet. Instead, Katharinhof’s Open Day is a long-standing tradition, celebrating the birthday of Salaa El Dine, Nagel’s own birthday, or the publication of one of his books – we very much hope this farm will continue to be a source of inspiration for breeders all over the world for a long time to come.

Sein experimentelles Gestütskonzept und seine Pferde sind sein Lebenswerk und es gibt kaum Züchter ägyptischer Pferde, die dort in den letzten 60 Jahren nicht Ideen und Motivation für die Zucht aufgeschnappt haben. Dr. Nagel hat sich immer geweigert, die sozialen Medien im Internet zu nutzen. Dafür hat der Tag der offenen Tür auf dem Katharinenhof Tradition, egal ob Salaa El Dines Geburtstag gefeiert wurde, oder sein eigener, oder eines seiner Bücher veröffentlicht wurde – dieser Hof wird hoffentlich noch lange eine Quelle der Inspiration für Züchter aus aller Welt sein.

The Corona pandemic has controlled our lives for more than 1.5 years now in a never expected way. Many of us had to accept serious restrictions of their daily lives, work, business or, even worse, their personal health. Till now the pandemic is not over and the future development is hard to predict. Many activities with Arabian horses such as shows, presentations, sport had to be canceled, among them the Egyptian Event Europe at the Kauber Platte and the Noble SE Arabian Horse Breeders Festival at Sham Stables, Lochem, the Netherlands.

We are happy to be able to organize stud visits at the 3 farms which are now located in Großenkneten, as the Corona pandemic situation in this area looks quite positive right now. Al Qusar Arabian Stud had just recently moved from its previous location to Großenkneten and Robert Schlereth as well as Volker Wettengl are happy to show you their new place and the beautiful Arabians of Al Qusar the next day. With great pleasure Dr. Nagel and his family will welcome you at his world-wide well-known Katharinenhof Stud, home of very noble Arabians indeed.

Die Corona Pandemie hat unser aller Leben seit nunmehr ca. 1,5 Jahren in einer niemals erwarteten Art verändert. Viele von uns mussten schwere Einschränkungen des täglichen Lebens, der Arbeit oder aber noch schlimmer, der Gesundheit hinnehmen.

Bis heute ist die Pandemie nicht vorbei und die weitere Entwicklung ist nur schwer vorherzusehen. Viele Aktivitäten wie Schau - und Sportveranstaltungen mit arabischen Pferden konnten auf Grund von Reise- und / oder Kontaktbeschränkungen nicht stattfinden. Viele Veranstaltungen mussten daher gestrichen werden, wie z.B. der Egyptian Event Europe auf der Kauber Platte und das Noble SE Arabian Horse Breeders Festival im Gestüt Sham Stables in Lochem, Holland.

Wir freuen uns darüber die Präsentationen der drei in Grossenkneten ansässigen Gestüte auf Grund der derzeit positiven Entwicklung der Corona Pandemie durchführen zu können.

Der Auftakt zu den 3 Gestütspräsentationen beginnt im Gestüt El Thayeba. Das Arabergestüt Al Qusar ist kürzlich aus der Lüneburger Heide nach Grossenkneten umgezogen und Robert Schlereth und Volker Wettengl freuen sich darauf, Ihnen ihre neue Heimat und die schönen arabischen Pferde des Gestüts Al Qusar vorstellen zu können. Dr. Nagel und seine Familie werden Sie anschließend auf dem weltweit bekannten Katharinenhof mit seinen edlen Arabern begrüßen.

2021 is the year to celebrate El Thayeba Arabian Stud’s Golden Jubilee as the stud was founded by thelate Dr. H.J. Tauschke in Bad Heilbrunn in 1971. In 1978 Cornelia joined him and in 1981 the stud moved to its present location. The breeding program is based on the EAO mares Momtaza (Kohailan Rodan - Bint Riyala), Taghreed (Hadban Enzahi - Venus), Mahiba (Siglawi Jedran - Moniet El Nefous) and Moheba (through Moheba II - Kamla II family and through Malikah - Mofeeda family) of Dahman Shahwan - Halima and has been existing for 6 generations by now.

Two world-wide influential mares were bred and born at El Thayeba. Bahila (Bakria x Ibn Galal 1) who was imported by David Gardener for Bentwood Farms to the USA. She is the dam of such great stallions as The Minstril, Coaltown and Al Khazar. El Thayeba’s foundation mare Mona II (Mahomed x Mahiba) was bred to Ibn Galal and produced Madinah who was sold to Ruth & Prof. Dr. Paufler. For them she produced the legendary Imperial Madheen, Madallan Madheen and Mesoudah - M, the dam of Maydan Madheen and Mishaal HP. Today the group of brood mares includes 6 daughters of the longtime chief sire El Thay Mahfouz and one daughter each of El Thay Mashour, Ansata Selman,

Ajmal Tameen and El Thay Karim Shah. He and his son El Thay Kais Al Sabah and the impressive NK Nabhan by NK Nadeer and NK Nerham of Dr. Nagel’s Katharinenhof Stud were mainly used during the past years.

The stallions, even those who were on lease only, are regularly performing under saddle and even some of the young mares are ridden. Cornelia Tauschke holds a trainer’s license for her own horses by the German English Thoroughbred Jockey Club and she trained and showed her horses at stallion licensing, stallions and mares registration shows, and at national and international shows for Straight Egyptians; and also, for all purebred Arabians before shows and presentation became very professional. Then she stopped showing as she did not want to keep her horses at training centers for several months. Her Straight Egyptian Arabians are her true love and passion.

The Golden Jubilee of El Thayeba Arabian Stud is a good chance to show friends from around the globe how the breeding program developed during recent years.

Die gestütseigenen Hengste, sowie auch zeitweilig an gepachtete Hengste wurden und werden geritten und müssen ihre Leistungsbereitschaft und Willen zur Mitarbeit beweisen.

Zusätzlich werden auch ein paar Stuten geritten. Cornelia Tauschke besitzt eine‘Besitzer Trainer Lizenz’des Direktoriums für Vollblutzucht und Rennen und hat z.B. die selbst gezogenen Hengste El Thay Ibn Halim Shah und El Thay Mansour für die Hengstleistungsprüfung durch Zuchtrennen selbst trainiert und vorbereitet. Zusätzlich hat sie viele Pferde des Gestüts El Thayeba selbst für Körungen, Verbandshengstschauen, Prämienstutenschauen, nationale und internationale Schauen für Straight Egyptians und für alle Vollblutaraber trainiert und erfolgreich vorgestellt. Erst als Shows mehr und mehr von Profis dominiert wurden und vorwiegend Pferde ausgestellt werden, die zum Teil lange Zeit in Trainingsställen leben und dort vorbereitet werden, hat sie sich in diesem Bereich nicht mehr engagiert. Ihre Pferde sind ihre Passion und Leidenschaft und sie hat sie gerne um sich.

El Thayeba feiert in diesem Jahr das Goldene Jubiläum - 50 Jahre El Thayeba Arabergestüt - ein guter Anlass Freunden, Züchtern und Liebhabern des rein ägyptisch gezogenen Arabischen Pferdes zu zeigen und zu erläutern, wie sich das Gestüt über die Jahre entwickelt hat. Familie Tauschke begrüßt Sie hiermit sehr herzlich. The AL QUSAR Arabians stud has a long history behind it, as it transformed over the years from an internationally successful show-training stable to a stud for breeding straight Egyptian Arabians. „Wer Erfolg haben will, muss seinem Zuchtkonzept treu bleiben“ Das Gestüt AL QUSAR Arabians hat eine lange Geschichte, denn vom international erfolgreichen Schau-Trainingsstall wandelte es sich über die Jahre zu einem Gestüt für die Zucht rein ägyptischer Araber. Verglichen mit den beiden Gestüten Katharinenhof und El Thayeba ist Al Qusar mit seinen 24 Jahren der Youngster unter den drei Zuchtstätten.

In the life of Robert Schlereth and Volker Wettengl everything has always revolved around Arabian horses, on the ground, in hand, in the saddle, many kilometres on the road to the shows. Full of hopes, joy, sometimes disappointments, but always with the vision of their own breeding, which was successfully worked on in parallel over the years.

Im Leben von Robert Schlereth und Volker Wettengl hat sich immer schon alles um arabische Pferde gedreht, am Boden, an der Hand, im Sattel, viele Kilometer auf der Straße hin zu den Schauen. Voller Hoffnungen, Freude, manchmal Enttäuschungen, aber immer mit der Vision einer eigenen Zucht, an der parallel über die Jahre hin erfolgreich gearbeitet wurde.

Das Gestüt und der Trainingsstall in der Lüneburger Heide war für viele Züchter eine Institution in Deutschland und für die beiden Eigentümer eine große Herausforderung. Doch irgendwann musste sich etwas verändern, damit es weitergehen konnte.

Robert Schlereth: “We developed more and more away from the shows, because the way you have to train horses to be successful there was no longer acceptable to us. 20 years ago, it was enough to have the horses washed, nicely dressed up maybe and go to a show to perform. A good horse had every chance to win.

But as time went by, it became all about the sponsors, who were more important to many organizers than the horses, who were the real actors of the show.

It was all about the money, to put it briefly. That’s why today we prefer to meet

Robert Schlereth: “Wir haben uns immer mehr von den Schauen weg entwickelt, denn die Art und Weise, mit der man Pferde trainieren muss um dort Erfolg zu haben, war für uns nicht mehr akzeptabel. Vor 20 Jahren reichte es, wenn man die Pferde gewaschen hatte, schön herausgeputzt vielleicht und ist auf eine Schau zur Vorstellung gefahren.

Ein gutes Pferd hatte alle Chancen zu gewinnen. Doch mit der Zeit drehte sich alles um die Sponsoren, die vielen Veranstaltern wichtiger waren als die Pferde, die ja die eigentlichen Akteure der Schau sind. Es ging nur noch ums Geld, um es kurz zu fassen.

Deshalb treffen wir uns heute lieber mit andern Züchtern auf einem Event, wie dem Nobel Festival in Holland oder eben diesem 3-Gestüte-Event, wo es locker zugeht und es nicht nur uns sondern auch den Pferden sichtlich Spaß macht, dabei zu sein.“ Warum habt ihr den großen Hof in der Lüneburger Heide verlassen?

Volker Wettengl: “Nachdem wir uns von den Schauen verabschiedet hatten, blieb noch die Zucht und die Pferdepension, doch wir tendierten in Richtung „Small is Beautiful“. Wir wollten einen kleineren Hof, wo wir uns gezielter der Zucht widmen konnten und nebenbei jeder von uns auch noch ein Privatleben haben kann“.

Robert Schlereth: „Wir sind nicht zufällig hier in dieser Gegend, denn Dr. Nagel brauchte Unterstützung auf dem Katharinenhof und fragte mich, ob ich dort mitarbeiten kann. Ich beschloss, bei ihm in Teilzeit zu arbeiten. Das ist für mich eine neue Herausforderung, die ich sehr spannend finde, wenn ich auch selbst meine eigene Zuchtstrategie auf der Basis unserer Stammpferde habe. Doch mit den Hengsten von Dr. Nagel ist uns eine erfolgreiche Linienzucht gelungen. Auch fühlen wir uns hier sehr wohl, wir haben viel Kontakt mit unseren Nachbarn, es gibt viele Gestüte und Pferde in dieser Gegend und jeder hilft hier jedem“.

Why did you leave the big farm in the Lüneburger Heide?

Volker Wettengl: “After we said goodbye to the shows, the breeding and horse boarding still remained, but we tended in the direction of Small is Beautiful. We wanted a smaller farm where we could devote ourselves more specifically to breeding and where each of us could have a private life on the side.”

Im Gestüt Al Qusar gibt es ein Pferd, mit dem alles anfing. Es ist Teymur B (Assad x 214 Ibn Galal I), den Robert Schlereth als 2-jaehrigen im Staatsgestüt Babolna in Ungarn gekauft hatte. Er ist der Gross-oder Urgroßvater der meisten Stuten auf dem Hof in teils 3. und 4. Generation. Doch nicht nur dass, er hat erfolgreiche Nachzucht in aller Züchterwelt. Der 1994 geborene Hengst zeigte sich dem Publikum selbstbewusst und kein bisschen müde. Auch die Stute Maida Bint Bint Mohssen hatte sich als wertvolle Stammstute des Gestüts erwiesen. Nachdem sie von Sheikh Abdulaziz Al Thani nach Katar importiert wurde und dort eine der Gründungsstuten der Al Rayyan Farm wurde, blieb ihre Tochter Mashahana Al Qusar im Gestüt hat eine eigene Stutenfamilie gründen können.

Robert Schlereth: “We are not here in this area by chance, because Dr. Nagel needed support at Katharinenhof and asked me if I could work there. I decided to work for him part-time. This is a new challenge for me, which I find very exciting, even though I have my own breeding strategy based on our own horses. However, with Dr. Nagel’s stallions, we have succeeded a successful line breeding. We also feel very comfortable here, we have a lot of contact with our neighbors, there are many studs and horses in this area and everyone helps everyone here.”

At Al Qusar Stud, there is one horse that started it all. It is Teymur B (Assad x 214 Ibn Galal I), whom Robert Schlereth bought as a 2-year-old at the Babolna State Stud in Hungary. Robert Schlereth:” “Not through capital, but through hard work with the horses, we were able to realize our dreams and acquire a small group of exquisite foundation mares. It was crucial that we didn’t sell our own first good foal for good money right away, because even if that would have helped us for a moment, we would never have gotten to know if our breeding concept was right that way.”

Mare families are shown individually and in groups with their foals. There is much applause for the beautiful horses. “If you want to be successful, you have to stay true to your breeding concept...” says Robert in response. The end of the show is then taken over by Majd Al Qusar, the young stallion with the big black eyes and the small ears, representing the Dahman Shahwan line of his beautiful dam Mashahana Al Qusar. From his grandfather Teymur B he inherited the gentle character and from his sire NK Nadeer the charisma and great gaits.

“A good character is as important to us as beauty,” says Volker Wettengl. “Our horses are family horses, we like them and their character is very essential to us.

It’s not just about the dish and the beautiful eyes or a long neck, they have to be clear in the head with Arabian flair at the same time” adds Robert Schlereth.

The almost one hundred visitors at the demonstration ring clap enthusiastically behind the last horses and the neighbour who had distributed coffee and cake is satisfied, almost everything has been eaten up. The caravan of guests departs in the direction of Katharinenhof, which is very close by.

Die fast hundert Besucherinnen und Besucher am Vorführring klatschen begeistert hinter den letzten Pferden her und die Nachbarin, die Kaffee und Kuchen verteilt hatte, ist zufrieden, fast alles ist aufgegessen. Die Karawane der Gäste fährt ab in Richtung Katharinenhof, der ganz in der Nähe liegt.

KATHARINENHOF STUD On Sunday afternoon, the caravan of visitors reached the last stop of the Three Studs Event in Northern Germany. This highlight was the Katharinenhof of Dr. Nagel, who can definitely be called the leading Influencer of the Straight Egyptians in the World. He was not only one of the very first of the "new age" to import Arabian horses from the Orient. He was, and is also, a breeder who takes the historical role of these horses seriously. At the same time he has defined his "conservation breeding" scientifically in order to breed successfully for the future. The closed studbook of Katharinenhof is an experiment and its template is the origin of the Arabian horse breeding among the Bedouin tribes of the Arabian Peninsula who used to live in isolation. However, not only genetic aspects and targeted selection count to consolidate the beauty of these horses, the environment in which the horses grow up and how the reproduction takes place are co-responsible for its success.

During the Open House, Dr. Nagel himself will tell the story of his breeding concept, how it works and why, once again this year, a new generation of foals are playing in the pastures with their mothers that you would like to take home right away.

Am Sonntagnachmittag erreichte die Zuschauerkarawane die letzte Station des Drei-Gestüte-Events in Norddeutschland. Dieses Highlight war der Katharinenhof von Dr. Nagel, den man durchaus als den Influencer der Straight Egyptians in der Welt bezeichnen kann. Er war nicht nur einer der allerersten der „neuen Zeit“, der arabische Pferde aus dem Orient importierte. Er war und ist auch ein Züchter, der die historische Rolle dieser Pferde ernst nimmt und gleichzeitig seine „Erhaltungszucht“ wissenschaftlich definiert hat, um erfolgreich für die Zukunft zu züchten. Das geschlossene Stutbuch des Katharinenhof ist ein Experiment und seine Vorlage ist die Entstehung der arabischen Pferderasse bei den früher isoliert lebenden Beduinenstämmen der arabischen Halbinsel. Doch nicht nur genetische Aspekte und gezielte Selektion zählen, um die Schönheit dieser Pferde zu konsolidieren, sondern auch das Umfeld, in dem die Pferde aufwachsen und die Reproduktion stattfindet, sind mit verantwortlich für den Erfolg. Während des Open House Event erzählt Dr. Nagel selbst die Geschichte seines Zuchtkonzepts, wie es funktioniert und warum auch dieses Jahr wieder eine neue Generation von Fohlen auf den Weiden mit ihren Müttern spielen, die man am liebsten gleich mit nach Hause nehmen möchte.

“Everything that relates to Arabian horses ends eventually in their history, a long history, more than thousand years. I was the lucky person when I got interested in these horses, learning much of their history by being engaged in my daily business with the 250-years old State Stud of Babolna in Hungary.

In addition, my profession brought me also to Egypt and soon I found out about the Mecca of Egyptian Arabian horses, the State Stud “El Zahraa”. The German proverb, which says approximately: “first you try and then you study” is not suitable for Arabian breeding at all. This proverb needs to be turned around to avoid unforgivable mistakes. Therefore, I had the chance to meet very experienced horsemen from whom I learned some very basic facts. I studied first the breeding population in Babolna focussed on stallions and sire lines and applied mostly cross-breeding. In the Arab countries and in Cairo the habits are different. The Bedouin breeders have put their focus more on mare lines first, knowing that it would always be known who is the mother (“mater semper certa est”) and secondly, mare lines are the back bone of any population, combined with application of “close breeding”.

In El Zahraa, certain sires’ names keep turning up in breeding all the time, which are Nazeer and his sons. These horses were strongly determinating and creating the typical El Zahraa stock. Many years later, I found Ansata Halim Shah, also a representative of this sire line, in the US. I leased him for my stud and he was an excellent sire for my mares. First in my stud in Germany and later on in many other countries, Ansata Halim Shah’s first generation made a huge impact on Arabian horse breeding. It should be mentioned, that the stallions Maysoun, Ansata Hejazi, Salaa El Dine, Al Adeed Al Shaqab and many other precious stallions are sons of Ansata Halim Shah. “Wenn man sich etwas gründlicher mit Arabischen Pferden befasst, kommt man früher oder später auf ihre Geschichte zu sprechen, es ist eine einige tausend Jahre umfassende Geschichte. Ich hatte das große Glück, dass mich mein Beruf in zwei berühmte und bedeutende Gestüte geführt hat. Beides gab mir die Gelegenheit, die dortigen Pferde gründlich zu studieren. Das deutsche Sprichwort „Probieren geht über Studieren“ passt allerdings nicht auf die Araberzucht. Man muss es umdrehen um nicht unverzeihliche Fehler zu machen.

Das Eine war das 250-jahre alte ungarische Staatsgestüt Babolna. Seine Geschichte basiert auf Hengstlinien, die aus orientalischen Hengsten hervorgegangen sind in Verbindung mit einer einzigartigen Art von Kreuzungszucht.

Das Andere war das Ägyptische Staatsgestüt El Zahraa. Ich arbeitete für lange Jahre mit dem Landwirtschaftsministerium in Kairo zusammen. Dort traf ich Dr. Ameen Zaher, einer der prominentesten Kenner der Araberzucht in Ägypten, der aber auch in den übrigen arabischen Ländern Erfahrungen sammeln konnte. Er war Staatssekretär in diesem Ministerium und gleichzeitig Zuchtberater des Staatsgutes, dem Mekka für Arabische Pferde im gesamten Orient. Im Gegensatz zu Babolna standen hier die Stutenfamilien im Mittelpunkt, ganz entsprechend den Gewohnheiten der Beduinen auf der arabischen Halbinsel, denn man wollte sicher sein, dass die Abstammung des Fohlens auf seine Mutter bezogen, absolut unstreitig war (mater semper certa est). Außerdem ahnten die Beduinen offenbar, dass der Einfluss der Mutter auf das Fohlen größer war, als der des Vatertieres. Dazu kam eine „Reinzucht“ auf Großfamilienbasis. Aus El Zahraa stammen auch meine vier Stammstuten.

In diesem ägyptischen Staatsgestüt triumphierte zu dieser Zeit ebenfalls eine Hengstlinie: Es war Nazeer und seine Söhne. Ohne Frage hatten diese Hengste den Typ und das Erscheinungsbild der Zuchtherde von etwa 60 Stuten maßgeblich mitgeprägt. Viele Jahre später fand ich im Ansata Gestüt in den USA den jungen eindrucksvollen Hengst Ansata Halim Shah, der ebenfalls dieser Nazeerlinie angehörte. Ich pachtete ihn, er passte

Later on, in Egypt and abroad, several breeders made a serious mistake in their breeding when the notion of “Nazeer-free Arabians” turned up and many followed probably this trend for marketing reasons or with the argument that there is too much in-breeding in the El Zahraa horse population. It is difficult today to find a line which was not watered down by introducing again and again stallions of different or not suitable type. Whatever I have studied, I never found anything better or superior than the Nazeer sire line and I have kept my Egypt breeding on that basis ever since.

As to the mares’ side, I decided for some mare lines within the El Zahra population, which were in fact excellent, considering all the points one likes to see in an Arabian horse. No doubt, it makes a huge impact for further breeding when one is starting with mares as correct and suitable as these from the very beginning.

Now, how to combine these two sides, stallions and mares? There is an irritating word, which many people use only in a negative way. It is inbreeding.

I read and studied a lot about this delicate subject, in general, and in particular concerning Arabian horse breeding in the past and of today. By surprise, I never found a population, which could give a realistic answer to all these assumed uncertainties due to inbreeding. In looking at the El Zahraa Stud, there were in the beginning 16 foundation mares, but only half of them founded families lasting up until today. El Zahraa’s brood stock was apparently very limited, but worked properly. In order to find out proper answers, I decided to work from a certain time on with a “closed breeding population” consisting of four families and a total of 16 brood mares and 4 related stallions.

In the past, the first Arabian horses, which were imported into Europe, were used to improve local breeds. Also El Zahraa was founded to improve the local country breeds in Egypt. This aspect of improving was applied for a long time.

äußerlich hervorragend zu meinen Stuten und die späteren Fohlen waren der lebende Beweis, dass meine Vermutung richtig war. Dieser Ansata Halim Shah hat in seiner weiteren Laufbahn einmaliges geleistet. Weltweit gibt es heute berühmte Söhne die die Zucht ägyptischer Pferde einen großen Schritt nach vorne gebracht haben. Weltweit bekannt sind seine Söhne Salaa El Dine, Maysoun, Ansata Hejazi, Al Adeed Al Shaqab und weitere berühmte Hengste mehr. Sie waren ein Beweis dafür, dass es keine zweite Hengstlinie in El Zahraa gab, die der des Nazeer ebenbürtig war. Leider wurde besonders in den USA, aber auch von Deutschland aus eine Forderung nach„Nazeer freien“ Pferden laut. Manche Züchter folgten dieser Richtung, aus Marketinggründen einerseits und andererseits aus der Vorstellung heraus, dass die Herde in El Zahraa durch Inzucht gefährdet sein könnte. Andere Hengste eines anderen Typs und auch aus anderen Herkünften wurden eingesetzt. Leider hat diese Entscheidung die gesamte Population in El Zahraa verwässert und sie hat viel von ihrer einstigen Geschlossenheit verloren.

Die vier Stutfohlen, die ich Ende der 60er Jahre in El Zahraa erworben habe, wählte ich aus einigen Stutenfamilien aus, die ich über drei Jahre hin gründlich studiert und beobachtet hatte. Ich habe sie von solchen Familien ausgesucht, die einen sehr eleganten Typ hervorbrachten, solche wie man sie nicht besser finden konnte. Ohne Zweifel macht es einen großen Unterschied, wenn eine Zucht von Anfang an auf einer vorzüglichen Stutengrundlage basiert.

Wie wurden nun in meinem Konzept Stuten und Hengste am sinnvollsten miteinander kombiniert. Es gibt ein irritierendes Wort, was manchen Züchter sofort mit eine negativen Bedeutung belegen: es ist der Begrifft der Inzucht. Ich habe viel über dieses delikate Thema gelesen und darüber nachgedacht, im Allgemeinen und besonders im Hinblick auf die Zucht Arabischer Pferde und ihrer Geschichte. Ich habe dabei jedoch keine auf sachlichen und realistischen Tatschen beruhende Antwort gefunden. Betrachtet man die Geschichte des Staatsgestüts El Zahraa, findet man lediglich 16 Stuten als Anfangsbestand und nur 8 von ihnen haben auf die Dauer bestehende Familien gründen können. Also eine bescheidene Zahl und doch hat sich eines der berühmtesten Gestüte aus solchen Anfängen heraus entwickeln können.

Ich habe nach einigen Jahren im Umgang mit meinem Zuchtbestand beschlossen eine geschlossene Population zur Grundlage meiner Weiterzucht zu machen. Bestehend aus Desert Heritage Magazine • 103

It was said and believed that the more consolidated genes of Arabian stallions are better and increasing his potency for inheritance. Why, then this aversion for inbreeding? When one is looking for horses with such a genetic make-up and strong prepotency, this can only be obtained by close breeding.

So, I went on with my programme of what I call “closed breeding”. Years later – 20 years had passed – I asked myself how far this close programme was taking me concerning inbreeding. Therefore, I asked the University professor in Goettingen, Dr. Ute von Bostel, to determine my herd’s inbreeding coefficients. This is a statistic / mathematical approach. It turned out that the overall coefficient had risen during this period from 10 to 35 in most of my horses.

Some were less, some were higher. I asked myself: “Is this a correct answer?”

I doubted since I had no indication that anything was wrong or deteriorated in any of my stock, which many people might have expected. I repeated this check-up in a different way and with the help of Prof. Samantha Brooks of Florida University, this time on a DNA-basis. It turned out that the curve demonstrating the inbreeding situation by means of homozygosity was nearly flat. Not any meaningful increase, a big surprise for everybody, when comparing the results of these two studies.

One of the principles I learned in breeding is, before you do anything you have to specify clearly, what you want. Personally, I took the decision to breed “Heritage Arabians”, and oriental desert type like the type I could find in the El Zahraa stud; I saw such horses at that time nowhere else. I preferred a light horse of refined type, wanted them to potentially be fit to return to Arabia

Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts wurden erstmals große Mengen arabischer Pferde aus dem Orient nach Europa gebracht. Es waren überwiegend Hengste, die zur Veredelung der europäischen Landrassen eingesetzt werden sollten. Auch El Zahraa in Kairo hatte zunächst das Ziel, edle arabische Hengste zur Verbesserung der Landeszucht einzusetzen.

Und zwar in Hengstdepots über das ganze Land verteilt. Man sagte arabischen Hengsten eine hohe Präpotenz nach und wollte diese starke Erbkraft in einer Kreuzungszucht nutzen.

Aber woher hatten solche Hengste eine derartige Eigenschaft? Nur eine sehr enge Zucht in ihren Ursprungsländern kann die einzige stichhaltige Begründung sein.

Ich verfolgte mein Konzept dieser geschlossenen Population konsequent weiter und nach etwa 20 Jahren fragte ich mich, ob sich in meiner Herde ein Problem durch Inzucht ausbilden könnte. Ich bat Frau Prof. Ute von Bostel, Universität Göttingen einen Inzuchtkoeffizienten zu errechnen, eine mathematisch statistische Methode. Es ergab sich, dass dieser Koeffizient anfänglich bei der Marke 10 gelegen hatte und in den folgenden 20 Jahren auf einen Wert von 35 auf einer Skala von 1 – 100, bei einigen Pferden mehr, bei anderen Pferden weniger angestiegen war. Da ich jedoch, trotz dieses Anstieges, keinerlei Veränderungen in negativer Hinsicht, also irgendwelche Schäden oder Schwachstellen in meiner Population erkennen konnte, wiederholte ich diese Studie diesmal mittels einer DNA-Analyse, also einem biologisch ermittelten Wert. Frau Professor Samantha Brooks von der Florida Universität half mir und führte diese Studie durch. Die Kurve die vom Ergebnis her die Inzuchtentwicklung darstellte, ermittelt durch Homozygosity, war flach und zeigte nur einen minimalen Anstieg. Es war für alle eine große Überraschung wie sehr die Ergebnisse der beiden Studien voneinander abwichen.

and live there. This means to avoid everything getting them heavier due to better food and management in Europe or due to unsuitable selection of breeding stock. It should be noted that I needed no selection on the size of the horses. In 50 years all horses born remained in the limit between 147 cm and 155 cm, none was taller none was smaller.

Another subject was always occupying my mind. Back in the 1960’s when I started with Arabians, the famous dished heads were nowhere seen in the big European studs or in the upcoming horse shows. They were shown in historical paintings, mentioned in descriptions and definitions about the Arabian breed, but where were they in reality? What had happened since? Now they are very common, propagated and searched for everywhere, but even sometimes in doubtful shapes. The breeding advisor to El Zahraa and Undersecretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Ameen Zaher, explained to me that they breed in El Zahraa two types: an old traditional one and a more modern one. Therefore, I started looking for the old type with refined heads and high tail-carriage, which I had seen the first time within the El Zahraa population and which were reproduced by certain families again and again. I decided to import this type and people asked me later, where I had found them: they were only in Egypt. Dr. Zaher told me this dished head was easily heritable if one works with the right breeding stock. This was a new element for me at that time and I was eager to preserve it in an elegant format. Now I noted very often that this head sometimes turns into an unnatural shape, a deplorable exaggeration.

I like to breed a mare with different sires with the intention to produce variations in my population. This is an important part of my concept. Because of the following: Once I breed all variations out of my stock and I arrive to a total homogeneous population, I am finished as a breeder, as I have reached to pro-

Bevor man sich auf eine solche Zucht arabischer Pferde einlässt, ist es sehr empfehlenswert sich genauestens zu überlegen welche Zuchtrichtung man verfolgen will. Ich entschloss mich eine Erhaltungszucht durchzuführen, das Erbe aus der Geschichte, einen orientalischen Typ zu züchten, der ein leichter eleganter Araber ist und ohne Probleme wieder in sein Ursprungsland zurückgebracht werden könnte und dort ohne Anpassungsschwierigkeiten leben würde. Das heißt, keine Gewichtszunahme, kein abnormer Größenwuchs, hervorgerufen durch Fütterung und Management und keine Fehler in der Auswahl der Nachkommen. Hier muss erwähnt werden, dass in den mehr als 50 Jahren, in denen ich meine Araber züchte und mehr als 500 Fohlen insgesamt geboren wurden, alle, wenn ausgewachsen, ein Stockmaß zwischen 147 – 155 cm erreichen. Keines war kleiner, keines war größer.

Es gibt ein Thema, dass mich ebenfalls zum Nachdenken brachte. Als ich mich in den 60er Jahren für die Araberzucht interessierte, habe ich die typischen so genannten Hechtköpfe vergeblich in Natura gesucht. Auch in dem damaligen einschlägigen Buch von Erika Schiele „Araber in Europa“ waren Pferde mit solchen typischen Kopfformen nicht abgebildet. Geschweige denn sie waren zu finden in den großen Gestüten Europas oder auf den gerade aufkommenden Schauen für arabische Pferde. Heute findet man sie überall und jagt ihnen nach wie nach einem Fetisch. Allerdings manche von ihnen zeigen sich heute in übertriebener Form, unnatürlich und fast unästhetisch, als eine bedauernswerte Erscheinung, die hoffentlich in Grenzen bleibt. Allerdings waren auf vielen historischen Gemälden aus dem 19. Jahrhundert typische Köpfe abgebildet und in vielen Definitionen über das arabische Pferd dokumentiert. Aber dann habe ich in El Zahraa Gestüt diese arabischen konkaven Köpfe gefunden mit einer wunderbaren eleganten Linie, gleichsam einem Kunstwerk. Der bereits erwähnte Dr. Saheer erklärte mir damals, es gebe zwei Typen in El Zahraa, den Alten und einen mehr Modernen. Für einen von diesen sollte ich mich entscheiden. Ich wählte den historischen Typ und kannte bald die Stuten, die Nachkommen eines solchen Typs hervor brachten. Als ich meine Jungstuten dann nach Deutschland brachte, wurde ich immer wieder gefragt, wo ich Desert Heritage Magazine • 109

duce a final product. Therefore, new results and improvements can only result from differences and from variations, not from sameness. So, I have to breed carefully since I want that more progress is achieved.

Katharinenhof Arabians are bred as a close population consisting of ca. 25 stallions and mares. They represent now a perfect model for serious scientific research. According to US researchers, there exists no other population worldwide, which has been bred since 50 years, yielding 5 generations, under such a concept. Another one of this kind would have been welcomed for comparison reasons.

This model, which is delivering year by year a crop of typical and healthy foals, might be also seen as a repetition of historical Bedouin breeding. The harsh environment of the Arabian Peninsula allows also only very small populations, which were mostly isolated from each other due to long distances and due to a certain social behaviour and habits of the desert population. Closed breeding was therefore the usual practice.”

Katharinenhof‘s Araberzucht besteht aus höchstens 20 Hengsten und Stuten, zeitweise etwas mehr oder weniger. Sie sind in den 50 Jahren, mit insgesamt 5 Generationen, eine hervorragende Grundlage für wissenschaftliche Studien geworden. Jedes Jahr kommen Fohlen zur Welt mit einem bestimmten erkennbaren Typ, mit eleganten Köpfen, einer hohen Schweifhaltung und mit leichten schwebenden Bewegungen.

Vielleicht kann dieses Konzept eine Wiederholung der Geschichte sein. Die arabische Halbinsel, geprägt von einer in jeder Hinsicht armen Umwelt, erlaubte nur kleine Tierbestände. Sehr kleine Herden und auch diese lebten wegen der weiten Entfernungen isoliert voneinander auf sich gestellt. Hinzu kamen die Gewohnheiten und das Verhalten der dortigen Wüstenbewohner, der Beduinen. Eine Bevölkerungsgruppe, skeptisch gegenüber allem und streng geschlossen in ihren Großfamilien. Eine enge Zucht ihrer Pferde war die notwendige Folge. Dieser Tradition fühlt sich das Gestüt Katharinenhof bis heute verpflichtet.”

DH: Cosa ha acceso la tua passione per i cavalli?

ORVIETO: A circa 10 anni, avevo già deciso che da grande avrei fatto il veterinario, quando chiesi ai miei genitori di portarmi in maneggio perché volevo imparare a montare a cavallo; i racconti di mio zio sui carabinieri a cavallo, i caroselli a cavallo, i concorsi con i fratelli D’Inzeo, erano veramente entusiasmanti e mi affascinavano tantissimo. I miei genitori acconsentirono credendo che fosse una voglia effimera ma invece piano piano l’equitazione, insieme allo studio, divento’ la mia attività e passione principale per cui abbandonai tutte le altre attività che da ragazzina avevo già intrapreso come il nuoto, il tennis, il pianoforte e poco a poco mi resi conto che il cavallo sarebbe potuto diventare il mio futuro, anche lavorativo. DH: What ignited your passion for horses?

ORVIETO: When I was about 10 years old, I had already decided that when I grew up I would become a veterinarian. I asked my parents to take me to a riding school because I wanted to learn how to ride a horse; there were my uncle’s stories about mounted policemen, horse carousels at fairs, the show jumping with the D’Inzeo brothers, which were all really exciting and fascinated me.

My parents finally agreed, believing it was just an ephemeral desire, but instead, along with studying, riding gradually became my main activity and passion. Therefore, I abandoned all the other activities that I had undertaken as a young girl such as swimming, tennis, and piano, and step by step I realized that the horse world could become my future. quando venne a conoscenza che volevo iscrivermi alla facoltà di Veterinaria tentò in tutti modi di dissuadermi però alla fine conoscendo la mia tenacia e caparbietà mi disse di andare avanti per la mia strada e che un giorno da grande avremmo costruito e fatto qualcosa insieme; infatti fu così che parecchi anni dopo, a solo 27 anni, dopo aver fatto tre anni di apprendistato con una maestra eccezionale come la dottoressa Stefania Bucca, ritornai in Umbria e iniziai a lavorare presso la sua stazione di monta che nel frattempo aveva già 10 stalloni da salto molto importanti ed affermati.

he learned that I wanted to enrol in the Faculty of Veterinary, he tried in every way to dissuade me. But in the end, knowing my tenacity and stubbornness, he told me to go my way and that one day we would have built and done something together; In fact, it was several years later, with me only 27 years of age and after three years of apprenticeship with an exceptional teacher, Dr. Stefania Bucca, that I returned to Umbria and began working at her stud farm, which in the meantime already had 10 important and successful show jumping stallions.

ORVIETO: The first memory I have of an Arabian stallion is linked to a bay stallion that I rode on the occasion of a trip to Cairo, and with whom I took an unforgettable walk in the shadow of the pyramids. Shortly afterwards, I also started working for an important breeding farm of Egyptian Arabian horses, Le Tre Balzane, where I really approached Arabian horses for the first time, as I had never had a working relationship with them until then.

And so I discovered a world that was new to me but full of Desert Heritage Magazine • 121

sime che avevano “fatto”, anzi, erano la storia del cavallo arabo ed ebbi la straordinaria possibilità di essere ospite nei loro meravigliosi allevamenti, dei veri Templi del cavallo arabo come dal Dr. Nagel in Germania, da Nasr Marei in Egitto, da Judith Forbis negli USA e in tanti altri allevamenti in Qatar, Oman, UAE. Dopo qualche anno nacque all’allevatore Walter Betti in Umbria Nil del Guado, un puledro molto interessante che mi colpì subito per le sue caratteristiche. Suo padre, famoso Ibn El Nil RHM dell’allevamento Tre Balzane, era uno stallone molto fine ed elegante quasi femminile nella sua straordinaria bellezza ma nello stesso tempo molto carismatico, che in Egitto aveva addirittura vinto alle corse in ippodromo ed in Europa agli show di morfologia. La madre era Fasyla, una cavalla meravigliosa, vincitrice del Campionato Nazionale Italiano, con movimenti bellissimi, un carattere dolcissimo ed un modello eccezionale. Mi innamorai subito di questo puledrino bellissimo, vispo e curioso, ma passarono diversi anni prima di coronare questo sogno d’ amore.

Infatti quando dopo aver dato all’allevamento Tre Balzane dei bellissimi puledri, Nil del Guado fu messo in vendita ed a quel punto feci la follia di acquistarlo. Nil mi ha sempre colpito perché è un cavallo sotto tutti i punti di vista completo, con tutte le caratteristiche che uno stallone deve avere, un cavallo vero, non un giocattolino da show o un cavallo soprammobile solo da ammirare. E’ molto carismatico, distinto, molto tipico di testa, forte di struttura, con arti corretti, non portatore di malattie genetiche, con movimenti ampi ed elastici, un pedigree molto interessante e che stato anche domato ed è molto piacevole da montare essendo un cavallo di gran testa ed equilibrato.

DH: Che importanza ha per te il tipo del cavallo arabo?

ORVIETO: ll tipo nel cavallo arabo è fondamentale naturalmente, perché deve permettere a chiunque di poter riconoscere da lontano che quello che si sta guardando e’ un Arabo. Anche se spesso ho l'impressione che si stiano selezionando sempre di più cavalli con testa iper camusa, con il rischio di creare cavalli con problemi respiratori avendo la canna nasale molto deviata, perché al cavallo serve un canale nasale libero considerato che non può respirare con la bocca. Da veterinario io vedo

history and culture; I met very interesting people who had “made”, indeed, the history of the Arabian horse; and I had the extraordinary opportunity to be a guest in their wonderful farms, real temples of the Arabian horse such as with Dr. Nagel in Germany, Nasr Marei in Egypt, Judith Forbis in the U.S., and many other farms in Qatar, Oman, and the UAE. After a few years I met Walter Betti in Umbria who had bred Nil del Guado, a very interesting colt that struck me immediately for his characteristics. His sire, the famous stallion Ibn El Nil RHM from the Tre Balzane Stud in Umbria, was a very fine and elegant stallion, almost feminine in his extraordinary beauty, but at the same time highly charismatic; a horse who had won races in Egypt on the racetrack and was a Show Champion in Europe. His dam was Fasyla, a wonderful mare, winner of the Italian National Championships. She had beautiful movements, a very sweet character, and an exceptional body. I immediately felt in love with her beautiful little colt, so lively and curious, but several years passed before I was able to make this dream of love a reality. In fact, years later he sired some beautiful foals at Tre Balzane Stud. When he was put up for sale, I was crazy enough to buy him. Nil has always impressed me because he is a complete horse in all respects, with all the characteristics that a stallion must have; he is real horse, not a show toy or an ornament just to be admired. He is highly charismatic, distinguished, with a highly typey face, strong in structure, with correct limbs, not carrying genetic diseases, with ample and elastic movements, and a very interesting pedigree. He has been broken to the saddle and is very pleasant to ride, being a very balanced horse.

DH: What importance does the type of an Arabian horse have for you?

ORVIETO: The type, in an Arabian horse, is fundamental of course, because it must allow anyone to be able to recognize from a distance that what you are looking at is an Arabian. However, I often get the impression that horses with hyper-dished heads are being selected for breeding ever more often, with the risk of creating horses with respiratory problems because their nasal passages are very much deviated. Horses need a free nasal canal, considering that they cannot breathe through their mouths. As a veterinarian, I see horses, and especially breeding stock, not only from an aesthetic point of view but above all, from a funcDesert Heritage Magazine • 123

DH: Sei stata influenzata da Nil del Guado nel diventare allevatrice di cavalli arabi?

ORVIETO: Non mi posso ritenere una allevatrice di cavalli arabi perché non ho esperienza e non ho studiato abbastanza; ho prodotto con Nil solamente due puledri molto carini, con una fattrice baia figlia di Simeon Sadik del prestigioso allevamento Haldson. Un domani mi piacerebbe ampliare il mio parco fattrici con cavalle egiziane e continuare ad allevare.

DH: Secondo te, come è la situazione oggi in Italia per uno stallone da riproduzione?

ORVIETO: Oggigiorno è veramente difficile la situazione per un riproduttore perché c'è molta concorrenza di stalloni importanti con nomi altisonanti. E’ tuttavia molto importante la pubblicità e il marketing ma io purtroppo non solo non riesco a seguirla come dovrei per i miei impegni 124 • Desert Heritage Magazine

DH: Did Nil del Guado influence you in becoming a breeder of Arabian horses?

ORVIETO: I cannot consider myself an Arabian horse breeder because I do not have a lot of experience and I

have not studied enough; I have only produced two very nice foals with Nil, out of a bay broodmare, a daughter of Simeon Sadik of the prestigious Haldson breeding farm. One day I would like to expand my broodmare basis with Egyptian mares and continue breeding.

DH: How is the situation for a breeding stallion in Italy today, in your opinion?

ORVIETO: Nowadays the situation is difficult for a breeder because there is a lot of competition from im-

ported stallions with famous names. Because of that, advertising and marketing are very important, but unfortunately I am not able to follow that through as I

Una mia grande soddisfazione e’ che chi ha visto i figli di Nil lo ha utilizzato come stallone e alcuni allevatori lo hanno usato più volte sulle loro cavalle, praticamente si fa pubblicità da solo, anche perché ha una alta percentuale di figlie femmine, su trenta puledri registrati, venti sono femmine. Lo stallone importante è solo quello che fa puledri importanti, i suoi risultati in show non sono fondamentali perché gli show non sono organizzati per selezionare i riproduttori.

DH: Che influenza hanno avuto le tecnologie di riproduzione, come congelare il seme, embryo transfer etc. nella tua vita professionale come allevatrice e veterinaria?

TB HILAL (Nil Del Guado x TB Hasna) should, because of my work commitments as a veterinarian, but also because “doing business” is an incapacity of mine.

In fact, this is the reason why Nil is unlucky, from a certain point of view, to have me as his owner, because I do not give him the visibility he deserves, and I might give him more broodmares and the opportunity to bring his offspring to shows in the region to make us known. A great satisfaction of mine is that those who have seen Nil’s progeny have used him as a stallion, and many even several times, on their mares. He also advertises himself because he produced a high percentage of females - out of more than thirty registered foals, more than twenty are females. A stallion is significant only when he is significant in heredity. His results in shows, on the other hand, are not fundamental because shows are not organized to select the best breeding stallions.

DH: What influence did breeding technologies, such as semen freezing, embryo transfer etc, have on your professional life as a breeder and veterinarian?

ORVIETO: Assisted reproductive technologies are increasingly taking over the modern breeding world. The use of Desert Heritage Magazine • 125

ORVIETO: Le tecnologie di riproduzione assistita stanno prendendo sempre di più il sopravvento nel mondo dell’allevamento moderno. L’utilizzo del seme congelato e refrigerato facilita enormemente la diffusione degli stalloni senza bisogno di dover spostare le cavalle. Il seme congelato poi, permette di utilizzare stalloni che si trovano anche in continenti diversi o morti da tempo. L’ embryo transfer va usato invece secondo me con parsimonia, non per produrre troppi puledri dalla stessa cavalla ma per salvaguardare linee genetiche di cavalle anziane, malate o problematiche o che non possono più portare avanti la gravidanza.

DH: Secondo te cosa si dovrebbe cambiare per migliorare la situazione degli allevamenti oggi?

ORVIETO: E’ molto difficile consigliare qualcosa ad un allevatore, se non di allevare bene dal punto di vista sanitario e di cercare di non essere abbagliato solo da quello che va di moda. Puntare sulla qualità dei propri cavalli e non sul numero, mettere in riproduzione solo i migliori. Sarebbe fondamentale selezionare gli stalloni anche per la morfologia, il pedigree, per i requisiti sanitari e i titoli e magari i figli prodotti, in modo tale che non tutti i maschi possano coprire, come succede in molti altri studbook.

Sarebbe bello incentivare l'uso di stalloni italiani con categorie di show riservate a cavalli italiani per permettere ai piccoli e grandi allevatori nazionali di far emergere e dare visibilità ai loro prodotti.

Altro discorso molto importante per me e’ la genetica per cui bisogna fare molta attenzione a selezionare i riproduttori con i test negativi per le principali patologie come la CA, la SCID, la Lavander syndrome e l’epilessia, test che Nil ha tutti negativi, per poter abbassare sempre di più la probabilità di avere puledri malati. Per quanto riguarda la consanguineità, io cerco di fare molta attenzione agli incroci, perché si rischia di tirare fuori tante tare genetiche e l’inbreeding lo lascio fare a chi ha una profonda conoscenza delle linee genetiche con tutti i pregi e i difetti. Perché secondo me è importante creare puledri non solo belli ma fondamentalmente sani e forti fisicamente, tutte caratteristiche che io chiedo a uno stallone di trasmettere ai suoi figli.

DH: Quali sono i tuoi programmi con Nil del Guado per il futuro?

frozen and refrigerated semen greatly facilitates the wide-spread use of stallions without having to move mares. Frozen semen also makes it possible to use stal-

lions that are on different continents or have been dead for a long time. Embryo transfer, on the other hand, should be used sparingly, not to prevent producing too many foals from the same mare, but to safeguard the genetic lines of old, sick or problematic mares or those who can no longer carry a pregnancy.

DH: What do you think should be changed to improve the situation of breeding farms today?

ORVIETO: It is very difficult to give advice to a breeder, except to breed well from the point of view of health and to try not to be dazzled only by what is fashionable.

Focus on the quality of your horses and not on the number, and breed only the best. It would be fundamental to select stallions also for morphology, pedigree, health requirements, and functionality, so only the best males will be permittet to cover, as is the case in many other studbooks.

It would be nice to encourage the use of Italian stallions with show categories reserved for Italian horses, to allow small and large national breeders to emerge and

Another very important issue for me is genetics. We need to pay close attention to selecting breeding stock with negative tests for major diseases such as CA, SCID, Lavender syndrome and epilepsy - tests that are all negative for Nil - in order to lower the probability of having sick foals. As far as inbreeding is concerned, I try to be very careful when crossing, because there is a risk of bringing out many genetic defects. So I leave inbreeding to those who have a deep knowledge of genetic lines with all their merits and defects. Because in my opinion it is important to create foals that are not only beautiful but fundamentally healthy and physically strong, all characteristics that I ask a stallion to pass on to his offspring.

ORVIETO: Mi piacerebbe appunto dargli più visibilità, magari anche dandolo in leasing o addirittura venderlo pur di riuscire a valorizzarlo di più. Io ho sempre meno tempo e non riesco né a montarlo, né a portarlo in show come mi chiedono in tanti. Ma vorrei che avesse una vita più ricca di attività nel suo futuro.

DH: What are your plans with Nil del Guado for the future?

ORVIETO: I would like to give him more visibility, perhaps even let him go for leasing, or even selling him in order to be able to give him more value. I have less and less time and I can’t even manage to put the saddle on him or to bring him to the EE shows as many people ask me to. But I would like him to have a richer life of activity in his future.

The 67th Annual Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show will take place at the City of Scottsdale’s WestWorld, February 17-27, 2022. The largest event of its kind in the world, the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show routinely attracts hundreds of thousands of spectators to experience the passion of the Arabian horse and its versatility at the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show. The show draws more than 2,400 of the world’s finest Arabian and half-Arabian horses for 11 days of thrilling competition, horses travel from around the world in pursuit of the coveted “Scottsdale Champion”title. These magnificent animals and their owners gather to celebrate this exciting show where more than $4,000,000 in prize money is offered, luxurious trophies, and wonderful awards are given to the best in the world. With more than 1,000 colorful classes there is always something exciting to see.

In addition to exciting competitions, gala parties, educational seminars and an international cuisine court, the event features an amazing Shopping Expo with more than 350 commercial exhibitors, offering everything from lavish jewelry, clothing and works of art to boots, saddles and gifts. Guests also can stroll the luxurious, exotically decorated stabling areas in which the horses are housed. Each year the show has a variety of family friendly events, meet an Arabian Horse, behind the scenes barn tours, educational seminars, paint a pony and games to name a few.
