COMENIUS PROJECT 2012-2014

Wake up, shake up! Sport/ Health/ Citizenship

England –Estonia—France—Lithuania Poland—Romania—Spain—Turkey

ENGLAND Queenswood School Comenius Visit to Estonia In May 2013 some of the members of the Comenius project flew to Estonia. We stayed in a hotel with our teachers. I really enjoyed the whole trip especially playing in the pool in the hotel. We flew to Tallinn, the capital city of Estonia, from Manchester airport. We had breakfast at the airport before flying to Estonia. Tallinn airport is quite small but had plenty of shops. We arrived in Tallinn and had to find our way to the bus station. The taxi ride was fun! When we got to the bus station lots of us had to go to the toilet and we nearly missed the bus! The journey to KohtlaJärve took about 2 hours and when we arrived we were met by some of the Estonian teachers who took us to our hotel. The hotel was very nice and the beds were very comfy and I liked the bath as well. We took part in many activities; going to the Science Museum

throwing event which was more difficult than it looked. One of the French teachers threw the wellie so hard it went up into the air and came down some centimetres behind him – we all laughed. We had a lot of fun even though the weather wasn‘t kind. We all received medals for taking part and had a nice meal to warm us up afterwards. By Richard John Goode (Year 5) The visit to Kohtla-Järve was super. It will be a journey I remember for a long time. We all had a good time and everybody was really nice and we had a good time. The hotel was brilliant and we went in the pool nearly every night. There was a play area too, which had a very large swing. The bit I didn‘t like was the mosquitoes – which are very BIG in Estonia!

My Visit to Kohtla-Järve School The trip to Estonia was great. We had a lovely hotel and the activities at the school were brilliant. On the day of our Olympic event, it was pouring down. The teachers were dressed in Union Jack outfits to cheer us along. The events were many. I remember the wellie

Sporting fun

Britain’s Favourite Sport Rugby League by Leo Ives & Lola Phelps Rugby league is a sport played around the world but mainly in Australia, New Zealand and Britain. The simple aim of Rugby League is to score more points than your opponents A Rugby League match lasts for 80 minutes (two 40 minute halves). Timekeepers monitor this and sound a siren or hooter as a signal to the ref when the game is over. There are two teams of 13 players with four reserves on the interchange bench. Each team can make a maximum of 10 changes involving any position of players. The ball has to be passed backwards. It can be passed as many times as you like until a player is tackled in possession. You are allowed a maximum of 6 plays to try and score or to regain position .

The history of rugby league as a separate type of rugby football goes back to 1895 in Huddersfield, Yorkshire when the Northern Rugby Football Union separated away from the first Rugby Football Union to administer its own competition. Similar things occurred later in Australia and New Zealand in 1907. Gradually the rugby played in these breakaway competitions evolved into a distinctly separate sport that took its name from the professional leagues that administered it. Rugby league has many leagues in England such as Super League, Championship1 and

Championship2. Some of the best teams are Leeds Rhinos, Bradford Bulls, Batley Bulldogs and Wigan Warriors. The different cups in England are Challenge Cup and the Northern Rail Cup.

National Sports Personality Mo Farah by Cameron Taylor Mohamed (Mo) Farah was born March 23, 1983. He is a double Olympic champion and the UK's greatest ever distance runner - a far cry from his humble beginnings in Somalia. Mo arrived in London from Mogadishu at Mo also has achieved a National accolade of CBE and he was awarded it in the New Year‘s honours list. In April 2010, Farah married his long-time girlfriend Tania Nell in Richmond. Farah has a stepdaughter from this relationship called Rihanna. He and his wife also have had twin daughters born in August 2012, named Aisha and Amani. In 2005, Farah moved in with Australian Craig Mottram and a group of Kenyan runners that included 10,000 metres world number one Micah Kogo. "They sleep, eat, train and rest, that's all they do but as an athlete you have to do all those things. In July 2006, Farah clocked a time of 13 minutes 9.40 seconds for 5000 m to become Britain's second-fastest runner after Dave Moorcroft. On 4 August 2012, Farah won the 10,000 m gold in a time of 27:30.42. This was Great Britain's first Olympic gold medal in the 10,000 m, and came after two other gold medals for the country in the same athletics session. His training partner, Galen Rupp of the United States, took second place. Both runners are coached by Alberto Salazar. Farah stated that he would observe his Ramadan fast later in the year. On 11 August 2012, Farah made it a long-distance double, winning the 5000 metres in a time of 13:41.66.

Queenswood’s Favourite Food Chicken Pie Recipe by Bethany Hartley Chicken pie is a favourite dish of the pupils at Queenswood School. The recipe of which is top secret but you might like to try the one listed instead!

8. Bake the pie in the preheated oven for about 25-35 minutes. The top should be nicely browned and the filling piping hot. Remove and allow to cool slightly then serve.

Ingredients • 1 medium green pepper, sliced • 50g/20z button mushrooms • 10g/ ½oz butter • 400g/14oz cooked chicken, shredded • 225g/8oz puff or flaky pastry (ready-made is fine) • 1 egg, beaten For the sauce • 25g/1oz butter • 25g/1oz flour • 150-200ml/6-7fl oz chicken stock • 2-3 tbsp double cream • a squeeze of lemon juice • a sprig of fresh tarragon

Preparation method 1. Preheat the oven to 220C/425F/Gas 7. 2. Blanch the pepper for 2-3 minutes in a saucepan of boiling salted water, then drain, refresh in cold water and drain again. 3. Wipe the mushrooms and cut into quarters. Sauté in the 10g/1/2oz butter for 2-3 minutes then set aside. 4. For the sauce, melt the 25g/1oz butter in a heavy-bottomed saucepan, add the flour and cook slowly over a low heat until the mixture is straw-coloured. Pour in the chicken stock, turn up the heat and stir constantly until simmering. Add the cream and reduce until the sauce has a syrupy consistency. Add the lemon juice and tarragon. 5. Turn off the heat; add the chicken, peppers and mushrooms to the pan. 6. Butter an ovenproof dish large enough to hold the chicken pie mixture with room to spare. Add the chicken mixture to the dish. 7. Roll out the pastry on a floured work surface, to a thickness of about 0.25in/1cm. Place the pastry over the filling and carefully trim the edges. Use the trimmings to make cut-out shapes to decorate the surface of the pie. Cut a couple of air holes with a knife to allow the steam to escape. Brush the pastry with the beaten egg.

Full English Breakfast by Holly Witchell & Holly Wilson (1 serving) • 2 rashers of smoked bacon • 2 Cumberland sausages •2 eggs • mushrooms • 1 tomato • tin of baked beans • 2 rounds of bread • black pudding • 2 hash browns • cooking oil • salt - to taste • brown sauce (look for HP brown sauce) Slice the mushrooms thinly. Then slice the black pudding into rounds of about 1.5cm. Cut the tomatoes into half. Empty the tin of beans into a saucepan. Don't use a microwave as this takes a lot of the liquid and taste away. Grill the sausages, bacon and halved tomato to suit your taste. In England, there are many schools of thought on what is the best way for bacon to be cooked, but we prefer it to be lightly grilled. Add a little oil into a frying pan and fry off the black pudding and mushrooms together. They are ready when the mushrooms turn a golden brown. Move these into a heat proof dish and place in the bottom of your oven to keep warm. Start to gently simmer the pan of baked beans Don't overcook them as they will go hard. Add more oil into the pan (around 2 table spoons) and place a round of bread in and fry until golden

brown - repeat for the second slice and then keep warm. Next, fry 2 eggs to suit your taste. In England, we only fry one side and love them to be runny! Finally, serve everything on the plate together, make a nice cup of English Breakfast Tea

Reflections Upon a Journey When the idea came to try to introduce a bit of internationalism into the lives of our pupils, I don‘t think anyone thought it would be as successful as it has been! From the onset, with the first visit to Queenswood School by 3 members of what-would-become our Lithuanian partner school, our pupils have exhibited an interest to learn about other nations. The striking similarity between our school colours and that of our international partners has acted as a starting point for international exploration.

Since those first curiosities occurred our pupils have approached activities with a concluding comment of ―When‘s the next activity going to be?‖ thus demonstrating the positive effect of this collaborative learning journey. The trials and tribulations of the visits have only served to strengthen a wish to develop partnerships and embed an international flavour into our curriculum. For all the highs, the lows, the perseverence, the determination, the hardwork I thank each and everyone who has played such an active role in making this project such a success. May the future bring more…..

A Short Presentation about Yorkshire by members of the Student Council of Queenswood School

Yorkshire is a historic county of England, centred on the county town of York. The region was first occupied after the retreat of the ice age around 8000 BC. ESTONIA HEALTHY FOOD STORY We live in a world where people are always in a hurry and don‘t have enough time to eat healthy. Healthy eating is very important for every person. Wise people say ‗‘Health is wealth‘‘. For example vitamins and minerals make people‘s bodies work properly but you don‘t need to have too much cholesterol in your blood. That‘s why, it is better to avoid foods containing fats. We also need to limit sodium, and sugar. To pay attention, too much candy can provide you with large amounts of unhealthy substances, such as sugar and fat. Eating lots of vegetables and fruit is healthy. Eat fish, seafood, eggs, seeds and nuts. Don‘t eat junk food. Junk food is bad for your health. It‘s very important to eat right. It means we need to eat at certain times. For example, breakfast at 8 am, lunch at 1 pm, snack at 4 pm and dinner Along with healthy eating, physical activity is important. Try to keep fit by doing exercises, cycling, spending less time in front of the TV and don‘t smoke. KARINA VASYUKEVITSH AND ANGELINA GORODETSKAYA, KOHTLA-JARVE SLAVIC BASIC SCHOOL

ROMANIA

SPORTS DAY Motto: “Take care of your body. It's the only place you have to live.”(Jim Rohn)

Playing sports helps you stay in shape, gain skills, teaches you how to organize your time, boosts friendships and builds relationships. It is well–known that participating in sports improves your health in many ways. The pupils of our school take part in many sports activities, both during the regular classes or during their extracurricular activities. We have the best basketball team, both girls and boys, the best speed skaters, who won many medals and the best gymnasts. Besides these, many pupils practise other sports during their leisure time.

The basketball team of our school won the first place at the County Championship. They train every day after classes and they all say that sports force them to organize their time so that they can both practice their favourite sport and finish their homework for the next day. “The key is finding a balance”, says the team captain. ”If you can learn to organize your time then you can succeed in both”.

Healthy Food Day Motto: “To eat is a necessity, but to eat intelligently is an art." La Rochefoucauld “The only way to keep your health is to eat what you don’t want, drink what you don’t like and do what you’d rather not.” Mark Twain

TIPS FOR HEALTHY EATING Don‘t skip breakfast Don't get thirsty Get active and keep a healthy weight Eat less salt Cut down on saturated fat and sugar Eat more fish

CLEANLINESS DAY Maintaining cleanliness is considered to be the first step towards living a healthy life. Cleanliness means the absence of dirt, including dust, stains, bad smells and garbage. Purposes of cleanliness include health, beauty, absence of offensive odour, avoidance of spreading the dirt. Having a clean environment protects us from diseases.

Tired but pleased to see everything clean, at the end of the activity.

We decided to dedicate a whole day to clean the surroundings next to our school. Your surroundings show who you are…

…and the responsibility to keep the school and its surroundings clean belongs to all of us …as you can see in the photos!

―Leisure time‖, generally means the time when you are away from work. A hobby can be part of your leisure time. Leisure time is not spent on things that you have to do, like work, studying, housework, etc. Going out with friends A leisure activity can be a hobby: gardening, painting, knitting, cycling, collecting, fishing, etc. are often hobbies. These are things that one does in his/her leisure time. Leisure time can also be used to relax. Sleeping, watching TV, etc. are all leisure activities.
