STEPS THROUGH THE HARBOUR FRONT The goal of this project is to solve the lack of connection between communities, location, and architecture by using sustainable solutions with the help of technology. I selected the Harbourfront as my potential site because it is in the core of Downtown Toronto, and it is right by the lake which is a natural resource in the city. I decided to use stairs as my intervention because it creates transition between spaces and movement within its structural form connecting buildings and landscape as one. I connected the existing buildings through the use of small steps that creates the landscape form. These steps get higher as it approach the new intervention, a building mimicking the surroundings. In one side of this construction, the amphitheater was placed, half cover and half expose, this allows public access and proper use of it all year around using as much natural light as possible. On the other end facing the lake, the dining/lounge area is found with large amount of windows to allow light to penetrate almost all day and prevent wind from coming inside. This area provides a total view of the site while been inside creating a different experience for the user.

PRAGMATICS AND AESTHETICS:

Stairs had been used for many cultures for different reasons, one of the most important ones in terms of this project is the use of them to create transitions between spaces. By creating movement with its structural function, it provides to the user a smooth transition between the busy Queens Quay, the Main Building, the Amphitheater, the Lounge area, and the lake itself. Making this not only a physical transition, but a psychological change from the stress to the harmony and peace that nature brings.

WHY STAIRS?

The stairs can be display with different dimensions to create communal seating areas

It can also create interior spaces within its negative space

In past cultures and religions stairs were also used for creating a phenomenological approach to a template or an important structure of the same magnitude. In the pyramids or the Maya’s structures we find stairs that were used as portals that allows passenger to travel beyond the present world, where they projected spiritual rise or created an entrance to the under world. For this thesis, I wanted to propose the feeling of balance between our world and the natural world that can be achieve by climbing up; and I also wanted to create a more deeply connection between the structure and the beautiful lake that surrenders Toronto which will be achieve by following the stairs underground. Another reason why the creation of stairs for this site is so important, is health. We find ourself surrounded by traffic, stress, and work in a big city like Toronto; for this reason, I wanted to create something that can attract people also for how beneficial it can be for them. By climbing stairs, it is scientifically proven that it help us protect against high blood pressure, and it helps exercise our bonds and muscles improving strength and most importantly improving mental health.

PRAGMATICS AND AESTHETICS: CONNECTIONS When living in a big and busy city like Toronto, we tend to concentrate only in our small bubble of work, friends, and family; leaving outside the beauty that this city can bring us in terms of architecture and landscape. Through my years wondering around the city, I realized the lack of physical communication between spaces within the city and how pushed away is the nature of the lake that surrounds Toronto. I wanted to approach this issue through Interconnections because it can be one of the most natural and dynamic ways of involving society into the landscape. To achieve this I needed to consider: 1. A space to encourage communication or interaction between strangers 2. A space that can provide a sense of comfort and safety 3. A reason for people to visit the space 4. A reason for people to stay in the space 5. A space that is welcoming and accessible for everyone Following these guides I though of a mechanism of stairs that can connect all the environments provided by the site and creating joy and wonder at the same time. I also wanted to add an indoor-outdoor amphitheater to attract viewers to the space during summer and winter season by allowing them to see the beauty that Toronto has to offer and not enclosing them. In addition, this site needed a space that force people from all ages and communities to mix, this would be the bases for the creation of a restaurant that provides an excuse for interaction between users.

THE SENSE HOTEL

CAD•REVIT•PHOTOSHOP

For this project it was required to work in pairs and renovate a building in Queen St. to fit the standards of a Hotel. Because this is such a busy street and Toronto has many Hotels, we wanted to create a get-away space that invites not only the tourism, but also the locals that are looking to relax without leaving the city. This “white hotel” consists of many spaces that are shades of white and off-white to create a calm and serene feeling. Other areas of the hotel focus on a certain sense, such as sound, sight, smell, taste or touch. The intricate facade plays with light and shadow to render exquisite patterns on the hotel interior throughout all 3 floors. The entire third level is dedicated to the Spa and outdoor patio used for the public and the people staying in the hotel as well.

BREATHING HOUSE

CAD•REVIT•PHOTOSHOP

This project was inspired in the concept of Breathing as a method of relaxation. The client used for this project suffers from Social Anxiety, which created a conflict between the psychological issues of this illness and the busy street where the house is located. Breathing is something that allow us to live, and its one of the most important parts of Yoga as a discipline. To achieve this sensation in the design of the house, I used a system created by a group of Industrial Designers from University of California that uses an element called Bio-Metal. This material which joins two main metals, Copper and Steel, is very flexible and reacts with heat and wind. Bio-Metal expands when temperatures go above +10C, and contracts when it goes below 10 degrees. Using this material and technique, I designed a skin that surrounds the house creating this dynamism of movement within a rigid structure. This house was analyzed from a design aspect and a construction aspect following the building code regulations in Ontario.

OFFICE RENOVATION

CAD•OBC

This project focused on OBC matters and proper installation of power controls and air conducts in commercial buildings. The office space takes place on a building in downtown Toronto where renovations where required for better understanding and planing within Ontario’s matters. All the equipments and light appliances where classify and selected following realistic quotes and specifications. In addition to mechanical charts and information, OBC tables and analysis was required.

GOLF COURSE RENOVATION

CAD•REVIT•PHOTOSHOP

At Niche Decor, I worked along side with Jean (main designer of the firm) to create a good proposal for the renovation of this Golf Course in King City, Ontario. The client wanted to renovate the two main event rooms, the grill and bar area, the outdoor bar, and the roof. I took the part involving the interior renovation where the need of materiality knowledge as well as space planing was required. For this interior area, we tried to maintain a low budget without compromising the design; we decided to create a wood pattern along the walls of the main event room, to look more sophisticate and appropriate for weeding and business events. We also decided to create a manly elegant environment for this room to change the industrial feel that the rest of the building has. For the grill, we tried to play with the natural light provided and bring the design to a more industrial and simple style because this grill would only be used for those who are playing or watching golf and need to take a break and relax. This project was successfully approved and started the renovations last spring of 2016.

RESIDENTIAL BATHROOM RENOVATION

CAD • 3DS MAX • PHOTOSHOP

A residential project at Niche Decor where Jean (main designer) and I were involve in all the aspect of design and finishes selection of this two bathroom renovations. The client was located in Pickering, Ontario, and had a house that was built in the 2000 with a Colonial Spanish style. Her goal for 2016 where to start advertising the house for sale, but it needed to be upgraded to fit today’s style. For the powder room, we created a warm neutral palette of colors to fit better the living and kitchen area that wasn’t going to be renovated. The space was very limited, so we needed to design an appropriate vanity and shower that perfectly fits the space and makes it look bigger than it is. For the master bathroom, we had freedom in terms of color palette and finishes because the client was planing to also renovate the bedroom at some point, so we decided to go with a cold neutral palette, simple edged finishes, and italian appliences. This project was successfully approved and started renovating in December 2015.

COMPILATION OF PLANS

DON MILLS HOUSE

REVIT • PHOTOSHOP

The project was started and produced between Jentry, Jessi, and myself as a team proposal to be offered to developers to renovate this potential area from old to new without demolition. We found a house that was been sold for $900,000 and renovated it to bring it into the market at over 1.2 million. The materials used to renovate this house were selected by us taking in consideration Scandinavian style; one of the companies selected was Tilco used in tiles around the exterior and interior space. We wanted to give a modern Scandinavian aspect to the interior to be evaluated higher than the houses surrounding the area, as well as, to provide more visual space and natural light to the interior. The proposal was done in September of 2015, and approved in October of 2015.

LEXUS COMPETITION

RHINO • PHOTOSHOP

This competition was lounge along all Canada were one student from each university was going to be selected and send to the semi-finals. The design had to fit with the modular space in the Car’s exposition display in 2016 Montreal. The module had to show and emphasize the beauty of RX500, and it had to be designed at a low cost of no more than $5,000. I designed this module following the shape of Lexus (L), and accentuating the modern designs of the car in the background by the use of boxes 3d displayed. The colors selected were inspirited in their first car lounge of the RX500 where the exterior was white and the interior had a red leather finish.
