DESIGN BY

This portfolio collected my past 5 years work including product design, packaging design, graphic design and event planning. It is part of my grow. I remember one professor told us "Design is love". That's one of my favorite sentence. Because of love, we can design from user’s point of view and come up with a better design to slove the problem, to make people live better. That's what I believe and how I design my product, my work.

The bathroom occupies less space in the house. However, in our particular perspective, the bathroom plays an important role in the family. In addition to bathing, and dressing, there is more equipment beyond your imagination. It’s not just the place in which all toilet accessories are placed on, but also a place that you can groom yourself. Therefore, in addition to usefulness, we hope that the user can enjoy the visual and tactile pleasure. We also hope that the user can start a wonderful day during their morning wash.

MOTIVATION Not everyone can have a large space or the picturesque scenery in the house, not to mention the bathroom. To have an luxurious or relaxable bathroom is always accounted for a large space. That is the reason why we hope the sink can have we extend the table so that more items can be placed on it. Also, the light shining create the atmosphere of the whole space at the same time.

INSTRUCTION SWAN’s leaf is design to make each leaf can be rotated independently. The leaf can be storage by rotating when the user is making up or dressing up. This function can let user’s body be closer to the mirror so that the user no longer bends over backwards. Moreover, because the leaf can be stored, the using space is increased so that we can also receive water when we use the longer container.

ONE STEP User Observation

“One Step” is a chair design based on human nature reaction. I found out when people have no free hands to do thing they always use lags to help. So by this nature reaction I designed this folding chair, “One Step” , to slove the inconvience, such as need to use both hands and takes time to fold it.

The speed of using the pencil is much faster than a tree grows. The resources consumption is times more than our imagination. However, to protect and treasure those nature resources is everyone’s responsibility. I hope by this design we will not only learn how to treasure the gift that we have now but also develop the a proper perspective of cherishing resources.

It’s always difficult to hold a short pencil, so we throw it away. The new pencil design “ ∞ ” can be connected each one together. To connected is also very easy, you only need to put the raise side into the concave side. By this function the new pencil can connect together with the old one (short one) to increase of length and make the pencil can be used again when the pencil become to short to be held.

1 100 KM

AWAY FROM DESIGN

What if designers leave design behind? What if designs get rid of urban life? Let’s go back to natural life and low-tech living to enjoy the human nature and real human living. The Wu-Wei Gang Eco-community is far away from Taipei city 100 km. Such distance reserves the natural, optimistic and hopeful human live. During the workshop, the students will stay at homestay family. The students can experience the real Taiwanese family culture. Starting with the tour of the Wu-Wei Gang Eco-community, including how they stick with eco-friendly life style and sustainable development of their community. The grandpa’s craft factory and grandma’s kitchen represent the core values of Wu-Wei Gang Eco-community. Each family creates a chair for their own use. Each family cooks one dish sharing in the weekend. Using the driftwood as materials to develop either furniture or public art, that speaks to the way we live and how they will express the spirit of eco-friendly and sustainability. We will be exploring the practice of culture through the lens of local activity and culture. We will then explore how different cultures make difference, with attention to how designs suggest their meanings and how appearance have been adopted, interpreted and expanded. We will explore the design method and problem solving to help students and residents visually communicate their idea. The interaction between students and residents play another important role in this workshop. The final design works will be very well integrated with the local belief.

78

Wu Wei Gang PACK IT Wu Wei Gang PACK IT offers a viable means of generating income for the community using available materials, resources and manpower. This eco community’s main resource is driftwood and objects washed up on the beach. PACK IT is interactive the people that buy it make the objects and aims to create products that will appeal to a contemporary design market. The grandmothers and grandfathers of the village collect, clean and package beach flotsam selectively. A consumer network created via Facebook provides an ongoing customer base. Interest and momentum for the product and by extension for the community is generated through on going competitions and open source information. The group has engineered a design program that respects low tech village life and exploits high tech networking to bring Wu Wei Gang to the world.

Wu Wei Gang BETTER LIFE Wu Wei Gang BETTER LIFE is a concept that plays on the availability of drift wood and the importance of it to the community. The group reimagines this in its purest form to highlight future potentials. In sketches and models the village is entirely and happily made completely from driftwood. The students’ enthusiastic approach and willingness to embrace artistic blue sky thinking while remaining grounded in the material world has produced a lively and ambient sketch of what could be. What will be is suggested in the details – new products and DIY events that can create a new appeal for Wu Wei Gang in the region.

Wu Wei Gang ESSENTIAL Wu Wei Gang ESSENTIAL started with the premise that the community needed to define an essential quality and element that would reinvigorate activity and wider interest. The group observed the beauty of stone and driftwood and how they combined in their natural state and noted the importance of each in the original building materials of the village. The group aimed to develop a small collection of products that relied on the juxtaposition of stone and driftwood in new and abstract ways. Their efforts suggest a new branding strategy for Wu Wei Gang and elegantly demonstrate the beauty of the materials available in the area.

Wu Wei Gang 風箏 Wu Wei Gang 風箏 takes as its starting point the need for the community to create a sense of connectivity and cooperation between like eco communities in Yilan County in order to build a critical mass that can increase regional tourism. The kite is a universal symbol and important in many cultures. For the group, the setting and the availability of beach bamboo provided inspiration for the development of a series of kites. These playful examples produced by students from Japan, Taiwan and the Netherlands represent many possibilities for the community including ongoing DIY events, a greater attraction for younger generations, and, most importantly the reimagining of a more universal symbol for Wu Wei Gang.

79

The Exhibition

The core values of workshop are to make friends, communicate with others and develop clear concept based on team work. Working with Miss Patty Johnson, this workshop totally fulfills these three core values. The students in this workshop come from Taiwan, Netherlands, Japan and South Africa. In the beginning, the students are naturally grouped with those from same country. In order to reach the objective of making friends and communicating with others, Miss Patty Johnson forces students into the group based on different culture and language. This made the students need to deal with the culture difference and language difficulties. During the discussion, the students used sketch and body language to communicate. Through five days being together, it can be seen that the students from different countries are getting familiar with each other’s culture and they overcome the language difficulties.

We Learn We Play We Love

In the first two days, the tour of Yilan county and Wu Wei Gang were given. The students can understand the local culture and tourism industry. In addition, the students realize the difficulties of balance between being green and economics. Accordingly, the students determine using design method to purpose design solution assisting them to develop not only the eco-friendly economics but also sustainable living environment. The results are fruitful. The students in this workshop became good friends. Based on good communication, a good teamwork was induced to develop several clear concepts which merge various culture backgrounds.
