SITE LOCATION: ASU TEMPE NOVUS RESEARCH + INNOVATION

CONTEXT

The site is adjacent to Rio Salado Drive, there is a road with immidiate access from the site, that for now is being referred to as “access drive. The site has a proximity of a 10 minute walking distance to, the APS Ocotillo Power Plant, Tempe Market Place, and the Tempe Town Lake. 04

TEMPE

Fire Station No. 08 is located in Tempe, AZ. The site is know as NOVUS, and is owned by Arizona State University. Previously the site was being used as a golf course that used to bring in visitors and activity to the area. Fast forward 3 years, and the golf course has been bulldozed to clear space for a new building development currently undergoing construction by ASU. As the needs of the city continue to expand and evolve, it is also important to address the need for a new firestation in the area. The site will house offices, recreational programs, parking, among other multi-use program.

SITE INFLUENCES: VIEW CORRIDORS + NEIGHBORING CONTEXT

VIEW CORRIDORS When first getting an understanding of the site and its immidiate surroundings, it was instantly apparent that the site was in a sense “hidden” from surrounding streets. In an effort to make the firestation more sensitive to the context around, I decided to find view corridors that extended from the site and outwards. In a sense “reaching out.” As the project took its form due to program, It became very symbolic the idea of having the structure and program do that as well. The day in the life of a fireman revolves around the community, the building breathes and functions due to it. It is the face of a community in which Fire Station No. 08 will son serve. Although the view corridors might not be anything more than an ordinary Arizona street, it holds a greater symbolic and conceptual meaning for the success of this project. Hernandez_ADE 522
