Scholarship Handbook 2015-2016 Academic Year Santa Ynez Valley Union High School District

Scholarship Handbook 2015/2016 The following pages briefly describe scholarship applications and/or information usually available through the Santa Ynez Valley Union High School Guidance Office. Also included is loan, grant, and other financial aid information. Please understand that the information in this handbook should be used as a guide only, it is not independently verified by our staff and is compiled from information received by our office over the past few years. Most of the scholarships included here are merit-based competitive scholarships but there are some which are need-based. Please read the information carefully and visit the website if possible to ensure that you in fact qualify for any program to which you apply. It is anticipated that most of (if not all) the scholarships will be available again this academic year. Aside from ensuring you meet any necessary qualifications, it is especially important to make note of application deadlines; some applications must be received by a particular date whereas others must be postmarked by a certain date. DATES INCLUDED IN THIS GUIDE ARE APPROXIMATE AND BASED UPON PAST YEARS’ DEADLINES. A general overview of financial aid process can obtained from the student’s counselor or Mrs. Holley. Guidance Office staff is well versed on federal and state need-based aid programs, aid provided by colleges or universities, and many other sources of aid such as the Santa Barbara Foundation Student Aid Program, and the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara’s Educational Fund. Brief overviews and general information regarding these programs are also included in this handbook. All student aid must begin with the filing of a FAFSA or, Free Application for Student Aid. This can be done online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/. Without this application students will not qualify for federal or state financial aid programs at any school. The deadline for the FAFSA is usually March 1st. You should also have your child fill out a CAL Grant GPA verification form before this date as well. The CAL Grant program is basically a state funded student grant program. Both, the Federal Pell grant

Scholarship Handbook 2015/2016 (based on FAFSA calculations) and the CAL Grant awards (also based on FAFSA calculations) are considered free money; they do not need to be paid back (unless your child drops out of school before finishing the term for which they received the funds). The California Student Aid Commission provides California financial aid information via the internet at www.csac.ca.gov. Additionally, an informative web site called “The Financial Aid Information Page” is located at www.finaid.org. It provides a free, comprehensive, and objective guide to student financial aid information resources on the Internet. www.Fastweb.com and www.collegenet.com also offer free online access to scholarship search engines. Any additional scholarship opportunities received throughout the school year will be advertised in the student bulletin. Current scholarships and their deadlines are posted in the guidance office. Please be aware that there are scholarship scams. If you are suspicious of a scholarship “opportunity” please see your student’s guidance counselor or Mrs. Holley in the Guidance Office.
