Design Philosophy

Elegance, sophistication, and beauty are words that describe my designs. However, there is definitely more than meets the eye. Within each project, there is a thought process and a reason why I chose the finishes, furniture, and colors that I did. I strive to make the client feel comfortable and welcomed in their space by adding personal touches to their spaces that are relevant to them. By doing this, I create holistic designs that function well for the client as

well as look pleasing to the eye. In all my projects, you will see that I truly embrace what the client wants and needs in their space while still maintaining an elegant and sophisticated look. Overall, functionality as well as aesthetics are

important aspects that I apply to my designs and projects.

Modern Urban Loft Project Description: The client for this project was a single, 38 year old male in the publishing industry named Andrew who loves modern art and design. He recently moved to New York and needed an existing apartment to be remodeled for his needs. Andrew needed adequate working space and storage as well as an open kitchen and living room for his guests who came to visit. A detailed kitchen plan was required for this project which was important to Andrew because he loved to cook. A modern art piece was first picked to be the inspiration of the space and was to be reflected in the floor plan design.

Modern Urban Loft

The art piece was altered to black and white to fit with the color scheme better. The floor plan was created using the art piece as inspiration which is shown through the curves and straight lines.

A bubble diagram was created to show the flow from public space to more private spaces in the loft. It was important for the client to keep his private space separate.

Arne Jacobsen furniture was used to show the Scandinavian Modern style and bright colors such as the teal and the orange shown were well known during this period.

Modern Urban Loft – Kitchen Plan and Details

A difficult part of planning this kitchen was fitting the necessary appliances in the space as well as keeping the design and functionality in mind. In the end, the island was pushed out more to allow for a comfortable work triangle. The plan and elevation views were made on Revit and the cabinet detail was drawn on Auto CAD.

Advertising Office Project Description:

For an advanced CAD class project, each individual was to create a 20 ft. by 20 ft. small office using Steelcase office systems in order to create at least one private work area and one collaborative area. The concept

of my office was to be a modern advertising office that showcased its work on a plasma TV in the waiting room. The colors were kept simple so as to not distract the workers which allows their work to be the main focus. This office

was built on the 7th floor in a skyscraper building in Chicago, Illinois. Overall, this project allowed for improvement and development of office systems using Sketch Up and 3Ds Max Design. Skills Used: -Sketch Up -3Ds Max Design -Adobe Photoshop

Intergenerational Center Project Description:

The Intergenerational Center of Midland, MI was a project in which an assisted living facility and a daycare were to coexist in the same building. The concept for this project was Native American culture with a mix

of Scandinavian Modern aspects. The color palette was chosen with the senior citizens in mind. As we get older, our eyes begin to have a yellow tint to it so the colors were carefully chosen in order for the residents to still be able to

see the richness of the colors but also was still fun enough for little kids Overall, this project focused on designing for people with special needs as well as children. Skills Used: -Sketch Up -Auto CAD -Revit -Digital Boards

The storage shown is segmented components that can be put together to create a customized space for the resident. The accent wall shown on the left also allows for the resident to pick their own color which makes them feel like this is a place of their own rather than a health facility.

Intergenerational Center – Detailed Plans Electrical Plan Electrical outlets were placed at least every 12 feet and GFI outlets were placed where water will be present in order to avoid shock. An emergency call button and telephone connection were placed next to the residents bed for easy access.

Reflected Ceiling Plan Shown below is the lighting, HVAC system, switching, ceiling grid, and sprinkler system. These were placed according to the necessities of the residents.

Flooring Diagram Flooring was an important part of this facility because of the hazards of tripping as well as falling. Carpet was placed in the residents rooms for comfort and vinyl was placed in the bathrooms and kitchens for easy cleaning.

T. K. YAKI’S – Restaurant Project Overview Project Description:

The concept for this project was to find a historical building and create existing floor plans and a façade for that building. Next, historical aspects of the building were to be preserved as the building was transformed into

a unique restaurant. The building was required to be four stories with the basement included and had to keep the existing elevator, fire stairs, and HVAC shafts. Finally, a unique bar was to be showcased and detailed plans were

required as well as special lighting effects. Overall, this project helped cover all aspects of restaurant design as well as historical preservation. Skills Used: -Sketch Up -Auto CAD -Photoshop -Digital Boards

T. K. YAKI’S – Concept and Facade The façade for T.K. Yaki’s was based off of the Hutching Sealy building shown to the left which is located in Galveston, Texas. The night view below features up lighting which makes the building look like it is on fire.

T. K. YAKI’S IS A JAPANESE GRILL AND BAR RESTAURANT THAT FEATURES DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES ON EVERY FLOOR. THE OVERALL THEME OF THIS RESTAUTANT IS FIRE WHICH YOU CAN SEE THROUGHT THE LIGHTING, FURNITURE, AND FINISHES. T. K. YAKI’S IS ESTABLISHED IN AN OLD HISTORICAL BUILDING IN TEXAS AND COMBINES THE EXISTING BUILDING FEATURES WITH NEWER, MODERN FURNITURE AND FINISHES.

T. K. YAKI’S – Floor Plans and Section Cut

The unique part of T. K. Yaki’s is that each floor has its own different atmospheres which are shown above. Also, the restaurant comes alive at night as the lights dim and the floors “catch on fire”.

Antique Festival – Midland MI Before

After

Alisha Parlin

This project was a team design competition in Midland, Michigan in which antique furniture was gathered from the festival and a showcase was created to be voted on by both judges and people at the festival. My team and I competed against Michigan State as well as other CMU teams and won second place in the people’s choice category. The painting of Paris was the first item we saw and it became our inspiration for the theme of traveling.

Detroit Children’s Hospital – I-Spy Room Project Description: Former CMU student Brooke Wise started a renovation of hospital rooms at the Children’s hospital in Detroit, Michigan but unfortunately passed away before the project was finished. As an elective class, her dream was carried on. Inspiration came from the famous I-Spy books. Fathead stickers and light panels were created on a tight budget to spruce up the room. Colors were chosen from the hospital’s existing color palette. The bright vibrant colors distract from the medical room feeling and give it a new life. The kids who have treatments in this room can feel a little less scared now because of my design. Skills Used:

Set Design Internship – The Home Shopping Network

Project Description: During my time at HSN, I was privileged to meet with many clients such as Vern Yip, Colin Cowie, and Curtis Stone. My duties as an intern included administrative duties, such as paperwork and emails all the way to set designing. I also organized the prop storage room as well as other tasks my co-workers asked of me. My internship was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I would not trade it for the world. I really enjoyed going into work and I formed great bonds with the other stylists. I will never forget my summer at HSN. Skills Used:

Artwork The Disney inspired art piece below was created to illuminate the contrast between light and dark colors and to explore the hue and tint of colors as well as showcasing the movement and pattern elements of design.

To the left is a chandelier made from pop tabs. This project was assigned as a part of my lighting class and we were required to make it ourselves entirely by repurposing items that are not recycled and we required to produce technical drawings of our fixture as if it were to be sold in a catalog.

The concept of this project on the right was to use shading to create movement and depth within a 2D space. The contrast of black and white found in zebra stripes helped this concept come to life in this piece.

48 bags of skittles were used to make this purse and real skittles are in a plastic tube in the handle of the purse. The purpose of this project was to create something useful out of something that would normally be thrown away.
