Design a film festival honoring the films of a director of your

communic ations

choice. Identify a common thread that connects and runs through all the director’s films, and create deliverables based on that thread. These deliverables include a poster, catalog book, DVD packaging, tickets, and packaging.

_solution I chose John Hughes as my director for this project. I wanted to showcase his iconic teen films from the 1980s in my film festival. After researching and watching Hughes’ films, I realized that the common thread running throughout was that everyone in his films goes through a journey and comes out of the journey with a better frame of mind. I created deliverables that reflected the subject of high school, including a backpack, pencils, and a trapper keeper inspired catalog book. I also created deliverables that were inspired by 1980s items like VHS tapes and cassette tapes.

_solution Gibson Greetings is a greeting card company that began in the late 1800s as a printing company. It became the third largest greeting card company in the United States, but Gibson lost business in the 1990s with the rise of online communication. Taking the Gibson Greetings core essence, which was to cherish and celebrate the personal connections people treasure most, I transformed the brand from a greeting card company to a personal connection company. Deliverables included a book series, cafe, and home store.

Create a twelve-month calendar with a specific theme that carries on throughout each month. The calendar can be any size or format. Be sure to experiment with typography, color and materials. The calendar should be a design artifact and not

c h er i g ray _solution I created an astrology calendar. After researching historical constellations, I started designing. Each month displays a different constellation, along with a description on the top of the page. I wanted this to be a calendar that people can write notes on, so I designed space on the side with rules for notes and special dates. Wanting to create a natural, light and airy feel, I used materials including newsprint, vellum and silver wire binding. There are also details that show the different phases of the moon.

lian ng _solution I created a camping survival guidebook for city girls who have never gone camping before. I researched other camping survival books and pulled together a book I thought many female camper beginners would enjoy reading. This book includes beauty tips, cooking recipes, campsite setup instructions, and checklists at the end of each chapter. Each checklist includes a post-it with the same information so that the camper can bring it with her anywhere. I used newsprint to suggest the outdoors and ruggedness of the subject matter.

c h er i g ray _solution I created a fashion magazine called This/That. I did a lot of research, looking at many magazines that were published in the United States and in Europe. I decided to design a large format magazine that was clean and uncluttered. I wanted to create an enjoyable experience for the reader, as well as enhance the subject matter in the magazine with beautiful typography. Using color and type, I created a personality at the beginning of each article that carried into the following spreads. When creating this magazine, I let go of what I was used to seeing in magazines and applied what I wanted to see.

It is a positive brand that wants to make the world a happier place. I took in all of these elements, combined with the simplicity of their product designs, and incorporated them into my posters. _solution I chose the topic of bacteria for this class. Being a person who was scared of bacteria, but wanting to learn more about which bacteria are good and which are bad, I decided that this was a good topic to explore. I decided to take a scientific and unbiased approach to my design, which helped me present my research in a clear and direct manner. I also did extensive research on how society views bacteria, the health effects of the mishandling of bacteria and antibacterial products, as well as good and bad bacteria.

People wash their hands all the time to prevent themselves from getting skin infections or from getting sick. I have seen and heard people say that one needs to wash his or her hands for at least 20 seconds to get most of the germs off of them. Even though clean water and proper sanitation has led to a major decrease in water-borne epidemics, In a time where clean water is becoming a resource that is depleting, the question of how much water is wasted on trying to protect ourselves from bacteria is an important one to reflect seriously on today.

Considering that the large majority of antibacterial products come in plastic packaging, there should be a big effort to recycle them. There are antibacterial products on the market that are recyclable, but there are still some that are not. But perhaps that larger problem lies in people not thinking to recycle antibacterial products. As mentioned previously, all of my focus group participants have used or use antibacterial products, but none of them have ever thought to recycle them.

These materials include information about the types of germs, good germs, bad germs, and how to protect oneself from harmful germs. _solution I wanted to create useful educational materials that would help parents and children make healthy decisions related to germs, but I also wanted to make these materials fun and visually pleasing. In my research, all the educational materials about germs I found were text-heavy and visually displeasing. I decided to make my educational materials visually focused, with lots of illustrations, and fun to read. I created deliverables that include a germ guidebook for parents, a children’s picture book, a series of educational posters, and a Web site that provides information about germs.

there are many good germs. many billions of years ago, germs actually converted the earth’s atmosphere from nitrogen-based to oxygen-based, which made it possible for life to evolve. without germs, the earth would basically look like the moon, empty, with no animals, humans, or plants.

There are germs that live in the soil that protect plants from the harmful diseases and pests. Germs also help convert good nutrients, such as nitrogen, into forms that plants need to grow.
