Welcome Welcome to 2018 with the Adelaide Youth Orchestras! This year, we shine the spotlight on a very special, seldom recognised element of our organisation, AdYO’s alumni. In recent years, many talented and exceptional young people have come through our programs. Where are they today? Some have become composers who will be writing new works for our 2018 program – Emily Tulloch, David John Lang and Jakub Jankowski. Some are forging their own careers as professional musicians, including 2018’s guest soloists Simone Slattery, Josh Oates and Pei Sian Ng, principal cellist of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. And this year, we have an AdYO alumnus joining us in his capacity as a conductor – Bryan Griffiths, who also founded the Adelaide Youth Wind Orchestra. They will join our gifted young musicians in a program as varied as it is challenging, with classical favourites including Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, a Bach double concerto and Khachaturian’s ‘Spartacus’ Suite, culminating in Tchaikovsky’s massive, fate-filled 5th Symphony. All this would not be possible without our generous supporters, to whom we extend heartfelt thanks: the James and Diana Ramsay Foundation, The Advertiser, Fisher Jeffries, the Klein Family Foundation, Alfred James, and our donors who are too numerous to name but never too numerous to be remembered with gratitude. Adelaide Youth Orchestras Showcasing more than 250 young musicians in four outstanding orchestras. Selected from a wide demographic, and based on their musical abilities and talent, these young people make a powerful contribution to South Australia’s cultural landscape.

We Are: Adelaide Youth Strings (AYS) A 55-piece string orchestra of enthusiastic primary school students who learn musicianship through their performances of classical, world and popular music. AYS provides a fun and rewarding experience for our younger musicians. Conductor of AYS | Martin Butler London-born Martin Butler received a scholarship to the Guildhall School of Music when he was just 11. After graduating from Surrey University with first class Honours and a Master’s Degree in Music Composition, he worked in a rock band and as a violin teacher before moving to Portugal where he continued to pursue an eclectic musical career, including time as a violinist in the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon, and as one half of a roving gypsy duo. An Adelaide Symphony Orchestra violist, Martin is also a leading music educator, conductor and arranger.

Adelaide Youth Sinfonia (AdSI) A 70-piece orchestra of gifted high school students. AdSI provides an introduction to the thrills and spills of playing in a full-sized orchestra. AdSI performs a range of classical and popular works. Conductor of AdSI | Minas Berberyan Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, Minas was accepted into the Special Music School in Sofia at just nine. After graduating from the Bulgarian National Academy of Music, Minas moved to South Africa where he was concertmaster of the National Chamber Orchestra and Assistant Concertmaster National Symphony Orchestra. During this time, he became involved in education and outreach, particularly among the country’s most disadvantaged children. A member of Adelaide Symphony Orchestra since 2001, Minas is actively involved in the music scene, both as performer and educator.

Adelaide Youth Wind Orchestra (AdYWO) A 40-piece wind orchestra of secondary and tertiary students playing woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. This orchestra performs a rich repertoire of music for concert band and wind ensemble. Conductor of AdYWO | Al Kidney Al Kidney was appointed Officer in Charge-Band of the SA Police in 2011. A graduate of the Elder Conservatorium of Music he has remained actively involved in the local music scene as Music Director of several brass and concert bands, competing successfully at a national level. He has attended the London Conducting Workshop at the Royal Academy of Music under the direction of Neil Thompson and John Farrer and is also Music Director of Fusion Pop Orchestra & Choir.

Adelaide Youth Orchestra (AdYO) AdYO’s flagship orchestra is an 80-piece symphony orchestra comprising South Australia’s most accomplished young musicians. Every year AdYO performs the acclaimed three-concert Maestro Series at Elder Hall. Managing Artistic Director of Adelaide Youth Orchestras and Conductor of AdYO | Keith Crellin OAM Awarded the Order of Australia medal in 2008 for his contribution to music and music education, Keith Crellin is the Adelaide Youth Orchestras’ acclaimed Managing Artistic Director. A founding member of the internationally renowned Australian String Quartet and former Head of Strings and Conductor-in-Residence at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, Keith continues to play viola and is sought after as a guest conductor. He has performed extensively overseas and made numerous recordings. Since 2003, Keith has been Artistic Director of the Adelaide Youth Orchestras and Conductor of the Adelaide Youth Orchestra.

Soloist AdYO Alumnus Pei-Sian Ng Cello

Pei-Sian Ng | Cello | AdYO Alumnus Pei-Sian Ng was Commonwealth Musician of the Year in 2007, winner of the Gold Medal and First Prize at the 55th Royal Over-Seas League Music Competition held in London. He has performed concertos with major Australian symphony orchestras, Singapore Symphony, Malaysian Philharmonic, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Estonian National Symphony, Oulu Symphony, City of Southampton Orchestra, Philippine Philharmonic and the Orchestra of Music Makers and performed around the world in venues including Royal Festival Hall, Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room, Konzerthaus (Berlin), Lincoln Centre and Carnegie Hall. Born in Sydney in 1984, he began studies in Adelaide with Barbara Yelland and later with Janis Laurs at the Elder Conservatorium of Music before winning the prestigious Elder Overseas Scholarship to study at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. Pei-Sian Ng completed his studies under Ralph Kirshbaum during which he was awarded the RNCM Gold Medal, the highest prize given by the college. He has had appearances in important music festivals including the Brighton, Dartington, Edinburgh, Manchester International Cello Festival, Kronberg Academy, Mecklenburg-Vorpormmern Festival and Adelaide International Cello Festival. Ng performed Tan Dun’s Crouching Tiger Cello Concerto with The Festival Orchestra under the baton of the Academy Award-winning composer and also performed with Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble, Cho Liang Lin and Renaud Capuçon. Recent highlights include a performance of Kalevi Aho’s Double Cello Concerto with his twin brother Pei-Jee Ng and the SSO and also the Asian premiere of John Tavener’s Flood of Beauty with the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory Orchestra under Jason Lai as part of Tapestry, A Sacred Music Festival. In November 2016, Ng played alongside Yo-Yo Ma and the SSO performing the fresh and exciting double cello concerto Violoncelles Vibrez! by Giovanni Sollima. Pei-Sian is currently Principal Cellist of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and on the faculty at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, Singapore. Pei-Sian Ng performs on a 1764 Giovanni Antonio Marchi cello, Bologna.

Soloist AdYO Alumnus Joshua Oates Oboe

Simone Slattery | Violin | Director | AdYO Alumnus Australian violinist Simone Slattery is one of the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most versatile young musicians and performers, with a passion for music from a wide range of eras. Her performances nationally and internationally, on both modern and baroque violin, have received critical acclaim. Simone has appeared as soloist, recitalist and chamber musician throughout Australia and overseas, and regularly performs with ensembles including the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Antipodies, the Australian Haydn Ensemble, Ironwood Ensemble, and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. Simone began her formal violin studies at the University of Adelaide Elder Conservatorium of Music, before moving to Melbourne to study at the prestigious Australian National Academy of Music. She is the recipient of awards from the Ian Potter Cultural Trust, the Thomas Elder Overseas Fund, the Australian String Quartet and the Elder Conservatorium of Music. Simone is an Australian Post-graduate Award recipient, undertaking PhD studies at the University of Adelaide, where she is creating editions and recordings of the little known violin works of Ernest Bloch.

Joshua Oates | Oboe | AdYO Alumnus Joshua Oates attended Marryatville High School in Adelaide, beginning oboe lessons while part of the special interest music program. He continued his oboe studies at the Elder Conservatorium of Music with Celia Craig, winning a Helpmann Prize for performance and later graduating with first class honours. Joshua also performed with the Adelaide Youth Orchestra, both as an orchestral member and soloist. In 2014, the Elder Conservatorium awarded Joshua an EMR Travel Scholarship, enabling him to have lessons with many internationally acclaimed oboists including Jonathan Kelly, Nick Deutsch and Nicholas Daniel. While still a student, Joshua began his freelance career with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. Since being a part of the Sydney Symphony Orchestraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Fellowship Program in 2016/17, Joshua has played with many orchestras around the country, including the Adelaide and Sydney Symphony Orchestras and Orchestra Victoria. He has also been invited to play guest principal with Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, and guest principal Cor Anglais and Oboe with the Opera Australia Orchestra.

Bryan Griffiths | Conductor | AdYO Alumnus Born and raised in Adelaide, Bryan Griffiths was an enthusiastic participant in the Adelaide Youth Orchestras, South Australian Music Camp and the Department of Education music programs throughout his youth. After graduating from the Elder Conservatorium of Music in 2010 he joined the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra as a member of the horn section, before taking studies in conducting at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Bryanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s passion for community and educational music has led him to direct a number of local ensembles, including the Adelaide Summer Orchestra, Burnside Symphony Orchestra, and the Adelaide Youth Wind Orchestra. He has also been invited to conduct the Adelaide Wind Orchestra, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and teach and perform at the Federal University of Santa Mariaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Festival Internacional de Inverno in Brazil. Bryan looks forward to working with AdYO in their 2018 season, giving next-generation musicians the chance to learn the skills and experience the excitement of ensemble music-making.

Composer AdYO Alumnus David John Lang

Jakub Jankowski | Commissioned Composer | AdYO Alumnus Adelaide-based composer Jakub Jankowski (pictured left) holds a Bachelor of Music (Honours) in composition from the Elder Conservatorium. He began his musical education on the classical guitar before moving on to the cello as a teenager. Jakub’s music has been performed at a number of festivals and concert series including the Adelaide International Cello Festival (2014), the Elder Lunchtime and Evening Concert Series (2015) and the London International Mime Festival (2016). In 2014 he was the recipient of the Accompanists’ Guild of South Australia’s Composition Award, and in 2016 Jakub was commissioned by Musica Viva Australia to compose a String Octet for the Elias and Goldner Quartets, which concluded the final concert of the 2017 Musica Viva Festival. Jakub has recently completed, to great acclaim, a new cello sonata for German/French cellist Nicolas Altstaedt and Serbian pianist Aleksandar Madžar, as part of their Australia-wide Musica Viva tour in September 2017.

David John Lang | Commissioned Composer | AdYO Alumnus David John Lang (pictured left) is an Australian composer living in Adelaide. He aims to create art that is inventive, thoughtful and heartfelt. His music often reflects his love of storytelling, whimsical sense of humour and instinct for drama. Many different ensembles and artists have performed David’s music, including the Adelaide Chamber Singers, Adelaide Wind Orchestra and the Australian String Quartet. David has received many commissions and awards, and his composing has taken him around Australia for three National Music Camps, and twice to the USA for the 2012 Atlantic Music Festival in Maine and the 2016 Composing in the Wilderness course in Alaska. His composition teachers have included Graeme Koehne, David Harris, John Polglase and Charles Bodman Rae. David played trumpet with the Adelaide Youth Orchestra from 2004–2008. Composition is now his primary pursuit, but he still plays trumpet with the Adelaide Wind Orchestra. He is also active as a conductor and as a writer of concert program notes. David loves reading, walking and eating good chocolate – and often these activities inspire his music.

Emily Tulloch | Commissioned Composer | AdYO Alumnus Emily Tulloch is a South Australian musician working as a violinist, composer-arranger, educator and arts worker, with a passion for the creation, presentation and promotion of contemporary music in Adelaide, Australia and beyond. Emily has been a member of Zephyr Quartet since 2005, and with the ensemble has created critically acclaimed and award-winning shows, performed across Australia and internationally, received two Ruby Awards for Innovation and two APRA/AMCOS Australian Art Music Awards. She has been a core member of the COMA (Creative Original Music Adelaide) committee since 2007, working on the presentation and promotion of original music in Adelaide and helping co-ordinate twice-monthly concert presentations continuously for 10 years. In 2017 Emily took on the role of Music Programs Manager at Nexus Arts, working with the culturally and linguistically diverse, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait artists, in development and presentation programs with this important, driven and dedicated organisation. Emily holds two first class Honours degrees, in violin performance and Spanish, the latter with a thesis on the representation of the city of Merida, on Mexicoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Yucatan Peninsula, through the lyrics of the popular song repertoire of trova yucateca. The connection between music and place is one of her favourite musings.

Community Concerts Presented in and around Adelaide with low ticket costs and free entry for children, these concerts are a wonderful opportunity to get up close and personal with our orchestras. Performed by Adelaide Youth Strings, Sinfonia and the Wind Orchestra the concerts feature everything from well-known classics such as Brahmsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Hungarian Dances through to Stairway to Heaven.

Naomi Crellin | Singer | Presenter Naomi Crellin graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Voice from the Elder Conservatorium of Music and has been a member of many choirs, orchestras and ensembles throughout her career. A founding member of two vocal groups in Adelaide, Naomi has produced CDs for both groups and toured widely both within Australia and in Europe. After joining The Idea of North in early 2002, Naomi quickly became a significant contributor to the groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s repertoire through her writing and arranging and has also utilised her extensive choral training and experience in taking a major responsibility for managing the groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s musical affairs and educational activities. Most recently she has co-written material for Hush 16 with renowned Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin and Melbourne-based singer/songwriter Lior.

Naomi Crellin Singer Presenter

Small Ensembles Adelaide Youth Orchestras also has four chamber music ensembles including two String Quartets, a Wind Quintet and a Brass Quintet. Receiving tuition from leading musicians in the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and the Australian String Quartet these groups perform in schools, retirement villages, community and corporate events along with public concerts.

Senior Heroes Adelaide Youth Orchestras ensembles are thrilled to have the opportunity to perform for older members of the community. Thanks to the generous support of Alfred James Funeral Directors, Official Partner of Senior Heroes, the program is now in its sixth year. This year chamber groups and smaller ensembles will present ten Senior Heroes Concerts at retirement villages across the Adelaide metropolitan area.

Schools Program Each year AdYO visits schools selected in consultation with the Department for Education and Child Development, with the aim of introducing music and adding value to each schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s existing music program. Seeing and hearing peers perform and introducing the powerful sounds of an orchestra, often for the first time, has lasting benefits for both audience and performers. Many students who are learning instruments say that our concerts encourage them to practise more and we hope to inspire others to participate in music in its many different forms. The Adelaide Youth Orchestras Schools Concert touring program is made possible with the support of the James and Diana Ramsay Foundation and the South Australian Governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Department for Education and Child Development.
