Visions of Computational Architecture

AI In ArchItecture

Computation is entrenched in our lives. What happens when architecture pushes computation to design? What will the results be? In a process of rather than designing ourselves but letting computation -- ChatGpt and Midjourney -- to design, complex aesthetics are in a result, one that has no clear answers as to what it is.

Beginning as a basis, our site was in the Highgate Station in London,UK.Basedonourfindings, thefarmingsystemsofthe UK are insufficent, which thus resulted in a programatic need for new ways of farming. Through an exploration of perhaps usingcomputationtodesignafarm, weresultedinaconsensus of using computation, AI, to farm. What this means is that everything in the farm will be computational base, hands will bedrones, irrigationsystemswillbecomputationallydesigned, sorting of produce, everything is all based on computation, fromthesoiltothegreenhousethatistopologically-optimized.

Where does us designers however come in? As designers, we decided to intervene in this computational farm to exhibit the complex aesthetics computation has presented/ designed for the farm. Through a linear approach, a user will exprience seven “rooms”, each showing off different types of what we think computation will design. digital media: https://youtu.be/W7mTZvlV2bQ

E-Racing

In the first part of the project, a social media platform and a community within it was chosen to explore and base a design around. I chose Twitch with their F1 racing game (e-racing). Through researching the wireframes of Twitch and the game (which resembles a lot on the actual sport itself) came to be a masterplan, and eventually a small specific area of design.

What began as a masterplan with a grid system made of circles to create natural potential areas for programs led to programs organized from a circulation system extracted from twitch’s wireframe and the F1 racing game. From the masterplan I selected an area to design in detail: a specific area to play racing simulation games.

ARC 307’s studio design is focused on housing. In particular, the program of housing my section’s professor chose is flexible housing. Our goal was to design housing that can be highly adaptable (capable of different social uses) and flexible (capable of different physical arrangements). In particular, my concept came in a parti idea for users. Based on an open plan at unit levels, a set of panel systems is devised for owners to create their own walls that divide up a space to be corridors, rooms, entryways, etc... The units are also able to expand and connect--- two units can become one or three units to be one, and continuing on as amount of units are expanded horizontally. Furthermore, our studio integrated IBC, LBC, and Zoning criterias into our design.

REUSABLE WATER SYSTEM takes greywater and runs through multiple filter system. The steps we have researched have told us that water is collected through some sort of gutter system - we have a sloped roof that leads water down to a pipe like pathway that doubles as a storage tank for the water. Then as it goes down it reaches a filter system - typically it is an inlet filter which filters particles that come from the water. After in the storage tank the water stays until it is used. When it needs to be used, there is a valve system that turns on the pump and an addition purification filter for the water to be cleansed through.

CONCEPT: using a sloped roof to direct filtered snow and water into a storage area under ground for reusable water.
