WELCOME TO THE WEEK Welcome to the 2015 Higher Education Careers & Industry Week at Blackpool and The Fylde College.
Careers, Volunteering and Progression Fair
We would like to thank employers, business owners, volunteering organisations, our partner universities and alumni for supporting this event.
The fair is planned for our University Centre on the Thursday during the week. A range of organisations promoting graduate careers and voluntary work opportunities will be attending the fair with promotional stands and representatives will be available to talk to students to provide information and advice.
The HE Careers and Industry Week aims to provide HE students with the opportunity to meet representatives from companies and organisations from a wide range of industry sectors to learn more about potential future careers options and current volunteering opportunities. Whatever your subject area and future ambitions, there should be something here for you during this week and we encourage all students to make the most of the opportunities to attend the guest lectures and activities promoting progression to post graduate study, careers and work experience.

Federation of Small Businesses – Guest Speakers Gary Lovatt – Director, FSB Recruitment Ltd Anisha Hansrod – FSB member and small business owner Subject Area - of interest to all students who are interested in working for themselves, starting their own business or are already a small business owner. The Federation of Small Businesses is the UK’s largest campaigning pressure group promoting and protecting the interests of the self-employed and owners of small firms. Partners for Success Job Search and Application Workshops
Partners for Success will be providing a selection of workshops over the week relating to graduate job-seeking. These will be available at Bispham Campus and the University Centre and will be of relevance to all HE students looking to improve their skills in applying for graduate vacancies. These will include:• Researching effectively for employment opportunities • Winning ways with your written applications (CVs, applications letters) • Managing your on-line profile • Time Management to meet recruitment schedules • The power of presentation skills in getting that job Details of times and rooms and how to book onto a session will be available through your group reps via Moodle before and during the week. School of Creative Arts & Digital Industries Monday 19th January John Slater, Think Tank (international design agency based in Blackpool) – Guest Speaker Subject Area – Graphic Design John has worked as a graphic designer all over the world including Europe and the Far East. He now runs ‘Think Tank’, a creative advertising agency who have produced work for clients such as Thomas Cook and Volvo. Alex Epstein, CEO of Concoction (Semi-Finalist - The Apprentice) – Guest Speaker Subject Area – Design Alex was a semi-finalist on the TV show The Apprentice. Since then he has gone on to set up his own business producing hair care products marketed through shopping outlets including Boots. Alex will be discussing how to develop and market a business idea and will give a unique client’s perspective on what is involved in commissioning packaging and promotional material from creative agencies. 2.00pm – 3.00pm, Lecture Theatre (UNPA006), Palatine Building, University Centre

As well as being a great source of entertainment, YouTube offers very unique opportunities for marketing, advertising and self-promotion. Being self-employed has many advantages as well as many pitfalls. Paul talks about starting up in business, registering for tax, setting up as a sole trader, a partnership or as associates. Phil Brown, Broadcast assistant – Guest Speaker Subject Area – Media Phil is a final year media degree student who also works as a Media Assistant in television. Robert Weir, Dubbing Mixer – Guest Speaker Subject Area – TV/Music/Audio for TV Robert is a sound engineer working on TV and music on location and in the studio. Thursday 22nd January Michael Trainor, Creative People and Places, Leftcoast – Guest Speaker Subject Area – Art Michael is an accomplished artist who has taken large-scale art commissions for public spaces, including the famous mirror ball on Blackpool’s Golden Mile. Andy Walmsley, Managing Director at Wash Design – Guest Speaker Subject Area – Graphic Design Wash is a leading Graphic Design agency based in Preston. Andy is an inspirational speaker who talks openly about the difficulties he had on the way to creating one of the North West’s leading agencies. 1.45pm – 2.45pm, Main Theatre, University Centre
Dr Gillyanne Kayes – Workshops Subject Area – Singing Gillyanne is a writer, researcher, teacher and singing voice expert. She graduated from York University with a BA in Music and subsequently worked as a professional chorister in London, and as a lieder and early music specialist around the UK. Working with actors at The E15 Acting School was a watershed in Gillyanne’s teaching career and fired her interest in vocal function. Gillyanne trains teachers and performers from all over the world, troubleshooting and mentoring singers in any genre and has numerous clients working in professional theatre, film and the recording industry. School of Engineering and Computing Wednesday 21st January Robert Holbrook, Environmental Investigators – Student Activity Subject Area- Marine Biology Robert is a PhD student at Lancaster University, investigating effects of diet on insect immunity with a focus on the use of biopesticides. Simon Bennett, Environment Agency – Guest Speaker Subject Area – Marine Biology Simon is the Catchment Co-ordinator for River Lune / River Wyre and has a role in Integrated Environment Planning. Scot Tudhope – Active Fitness – Practical Session Subject Area – Sports With over 15 years’ experience in martial arts, Scot has been training professionally throughout the country’s most prestigious independent schools and universities. He is also the chief instructor and founder of ‘Ronin Ryu Atemi Jutsu’, which is part of the Eurobudo Martial Arts Association. Wednesday 21st January Nick Cunliff, Kicks Blackpool – Guest Speaker Subject Area – Community Sport Nick will be discussing the award winning Blackpool FC Premier League Kicks project. Subject Area – Criminology & Criminal Justice Margaret is the chairperson of the Hillsborough Family Support Group. She will be discussing the media coverage on the disaster and how this had an impact on legal cases. Karen Waite, Founder of Leap Like a Salmon - Guest Speaker Subject Area – Electronic Continuous Professional Development (ECPD) Karen has over 15 years’ experience of teaching and developing people and has run her own management consultancy business during this period. Rachel Sykes, Blackpool Council (Blackpool Museum Project) – Guest Speaker Subject Area – History & Heritage Rachel is one of our college alumni having studied the Foundation Degree and BA Honours Degree in History and Heritage Management. She also studied FE programmes at the College so is a real ambassador and success story of a student who has achieved a job in the history and heritage context as a result of her knowledge, attitude and qualification. School of Society, Health & Childhood Monday 19th January Julie White, Nature to Nurture – Guest Speaker Subject Area – Early Years/Entrepreneurship Julie, an Early Years practitioner, will be providing a talk on the inspiration for starting her own Forest School and how she successfully developed the business. Tuesday 20th and Thursday 22nd January The Challenge, National Citizen Service - Guest Speakers and Recruitment Drive Subject Area – Working with Young People and Health & Social Care Representatives from The Challenge, facilitating the National Citizen Service will be providing a talk regarding the role of the NCS and the philosophies that lie behind it. They will also be conducting recruitment activity including, advice on how to complete applications and providing first-stage talks with student applicants. Roles include seasonal youth worker posts that run over school holidays and permanent roles.
