The Norwegian Timber Council (NTC) Office building is a mixeduse high rise located in the Barcode District of Oslo, Norway. It is the headquarters of the NTC, and the use of mass timber and wood reflects this. The building features a public art gallery, auditorium, and cafe space, with businesses above. Business

also spaces

feature that

provide a connection with each pair of floors. Passive design strategies were an important part of the design; Double skins on the east and west facades, and light shelves on the south, control light and heat infiltration.

CANFIELD COMMUNITY RESILIENCE HUB 4405-4011 CADILLAC BOULEVARD, DETROIT, MI 4TH YEAR PUBLIC INTEREST DESIGN STUDIO 16

The

Canfield

Community

Resilience Hub is a mixed-use resource center for the Canfield corridor

of

the

Goodstock

neighborhood in Detroit. The residential context and existing aesthetic

of

the

Goodstock

neighborhood was key in the design. This was made easier by the reuse of two existing abandoned homes. Using community input, food insecurity was found to be a key issue the neighborhood wanted to tackle, so a market and cafe are

the

central

commercial

programs of the building. There are

also

public

and

private

meeting rooms that can act as social and educational spaces. These educational spaces are useful for adults who may not have access to technology at home, as well as schoolchildren from the adjacent Detroit Lions Academy and nearby Barack Obama Leadership Academy.

meeting

point for residents of the area, with large spaces for residents to use for group activities. Three structures function

as

smaller

communities within the larger project, with two connected via bridges on the residential floors. Each unit has access to a balcony, and each building invites users to participate in the central courtyard. The courtyard of the Woodward Development directs the eye across to the landmark Cathedral, and the street crossings were redesigned to be more pedestrian-friendly.
