Amtrak Station Design VI Professor: Matt Leach ZHHNV

The project consisted of a redesign of the existing Amtrack station on Lamar %OYG LQ $XVWLQ 7; &XUUHQWO\ outdated and heavily underused, the station has potential as a method of PDVV WUDQVSRUWDWLRQ ZLWKLQ Austin and the surrounding areas, but its unassuming appearance and completely hidden location makes it an unpopular destination. 7KLV QHZ SURSRVDO SUHVHQWV WKH station as a landmark meeting place for those living in the area; a place for people to gather and enjoy the outdoors on the rolling hills surrounding, ZKHUH IRRG WUXFNV DQG RWKHU vendors can gather and people can relax.

The main structural components are a series of insulated steel ribs that generate DQ DPRXUSKRXV JHRPHWU\ ZKLOH EROGO\ HVWDEOLVKLQJ D VHQVH RI UK\WKP IRU VXFK a place of transit. As the train accelerates, the structural ribs give a visual pace to the process of moving. On top of this, over the public and administrative buildings, sits a sloped roof cladding that transitions into a canopy of frosted sloped glazing.

7KLV JOD]LQJ V\VWHP SURYLGHV SURWHFWLRQ IURP WKH UD\V RI WKH VXPPHU VXQ ZKLOH keeping the space beneath open and bright. This canopy extends past the platform and begins to establish the station’s presence as far as the main boulevard itself. Beyond this, the park extends across to the next block, reaching WRZDUG WKH FLW\ EH\RQG

7KH H[WHULRU ZDOO LV D VLPSOH YHUWLFDOO\ striated board-form concrete, further emphasizing the visual rhythm previously established by the primary structural ribs. These ribs are each made up of a single structural steel member encased on all sides in a layer of thermal insulation to prevent thermal bridging from affecting thermal comfort in the interior. This layer of insulation is then further clad in steel to maintain its clear role as a primary structural element.

The project consisted of the design of a residential block in Paris’s 17th Arrondissment, dominated by a recently completed park. Since the site could just as easily have been chosen to be more park land rather than a residential GHYHORSPHQW ZH DLPHG WR give back as much space as possible to the public. This resulted in the “datumâ€? of the project: a main axis of circulation that soars above the adjacent street, spanning the length of the site. This Ă RDWLQJ EULGJH LV DYDLODEOH WR WKH SXEOLF DQG DOORZV pedestrians to stroll through the tree canopy and take advantage of spectacular YLHZV RI WKH SDUN IURP DERYH Secondary branches of circulation pervade the site sectionally as smaller bridges. Pockets of verdant spaces permeate the site, providing GZHOOHUV ZLWK QDWXUDO UHOLHI from the density of such a program. Vegetation from WKH SDUN FUDZOV XS WKH vertical circulation cores DV ZHOO FRPLQJ LQWR GLUHFW FRQWDFW ZLWK WKH GZHOOLQJ XQLWV themselves.

7KH SURMHFW EHJDQ ZLWK research and mapping of WKH VXFFXOHQW NQRZQ DV thelocactus hexaedrophorus. Abstraction of a gestural study of the plant’s form led to the overall form of the project, and further manipulation of this abstraction at a much smaller scale generated the PRGXOHV RI WKH SDWWHUQ ZDOO 7KLV PRGXODU ZDOO IXQFWLRQV DV D series of planters varying in size WKDW FDQ EH XVHG WR VKRZFDVH the different varieties of species to visitors.

Design for an education and information pavilion at WKH ZLOGĂ RZHU FHQWHU 7KH SURMHFW EHJDQ ZLWK ZLQG VRODU DQG ZDWHU GLDJUDPV DQG FXOPLQDWHG LQ WZR EXLOGLQJV XQLĂ€HG E\ RQH WULDQJXODWHG roof. This roof collects all rainfall LQWR RQH SRLQW VHQGV LW GRZQ a sloped channel and into a SRRO RQ WKH PDLQ ZDONLQJ WUDLO This sloped channel sits on top RI D ORZ ZDOO WKDW SHHOV RII RI WKH PDLQ ZDONLQJ WUDLO LQYLWLQJ YLVLWRUV WR HQWHU WKH EUHH]HZD\ EHWZHHQ WKH WZR EXLOGLQJV Each building directs focus RQ D GLIIHUHQW YLHZ LQWR WKH trees, one horizontal (focusing on canopy) and one vertical (focusing on trunks). The main educational and technological programs are housed in the publicly-focused building and the bathrooms, staff, and storage areas are housed in the more privatelyfocused one.

The project creates a FRQQHFWLRQ EHWZHHQ WKH bustling commercial and business dimensions of Austin in front of the site (along South &RQJUHVV DQG WKH UHVLGHQWLDO neighborhood behind it through a green center that fosters a sense of responsibility in regard to the environment. This connection is achieved LV WKURXJK YLHZ FDQRQV WKDW PDNH XS LWV VHFRQG Ă RRU DUPDWXUH 7KHVH FUHDWH WZR VSHFLĂ€FDOO\ IUDPHG YLHZV 2QH SRLQWV WR WKH (DVW WRZDUGV the park and neighborhood that lie behind the site. The VHFRQG YLHZ IRUPV D OLQH RI VLWH SDUDOOHO WR 6RXWK &RQJUHVV WR WKH 1RUWK 7KLV YLHZ SURYLGHV D GLUHFW YLHZ WR WKH EHDXWLIXO urban skyline of Austin.

When one enters through the South &RQJUHVV HQWUDQFH RQ WKH ZHVWHUQ VLGH WKH cantilevered corner condition is paramount, DIWHUZDUGV RSHQLQJ XS LQWR WKH LQWHUQDO courtyard space that serves as the central hub for all of the building’s entrances and access points. From the eastern neighborhood entrance, one is given the H[SHULHQFH RI D ORZHU VFDOH VHW RI YROXPHV among the trees that are set several feet EHORZ JUDGH 7KLV VFDOH JUDGXDOO\ LQFUHDVHV as one progresses into the hub space, in ZKLFK WKH FRXUW\DUG RSHQV XS DKHDG

Object 3: The third form is a series of sandblasted plexiglass shells. These shells UHVSRQG WR WKH ÀUVW IRUP WKURXJK WKHLU locations; each occurs along a major contour in the cavernous interior of WKH ÀUVW IRUP 7KH\ DOVR IROORZ WKH VDPH construction technique of stacked layers. Luminaire Environmental &RQWUROV , Professor: Keith Simon &ROODERUDWRUV $XVWLQ $EORQ 'RPLQLF Sargeant ZHHNV

Project consisted of the design and fabrication of a OXPLQDLUH IRU D VLWH RI RXU RZQ FKRRVLQJ 7KH VLWH ZH FKRVH LV a picnic table in East Woods Neighborhood Park. The preexisting lighting in our site created an atmosphere that felt dark, eerie, lonely, and unsafe.

Our goals for the project ZHUH WR FRPEDW WKH darkness around the picnic table luminaire that creates ambient light around the table and projects direct light onto the table’s surface. In order WR DOORZ SHRSOH WR XVH WKH table for activities at night, half of the project lights up the greater table area and half provides more direct light to the individuals WKDW QHHG LW $ OLJKW À[WXUH ZRXOG LQ WKHRU\ EH VHFXUHG on each of the tables in the park.
