Look at my baby. I mean it. Look at him.
See that adorable face? Those chubby cheeks? You don't honestly expect me to put those cute toes in a stroller so I can torture myself on a 10-mile run through Forest Park, do you? Of course, that had been my plan BEFORE Finn was born in 2009. Back in those heady, over-achieving days, I was determined to lose my baby weight AND train for a half-marathon just as soon as my son arrived. Yes, I had motherhood all figured out. Then reality set in. Within weeks of Finn's birth, I was back to rising at 3:30 every morning, hoping to be reasonably coherent by the time I went live on the air two hours later. By mid-afternoon the LAST thing on my mind was a marathon, unless you count the times I was running to the store for baby food. Besides, who has time to exercise when you're juggling work and family? I also craved time for other things I enjoy, such as SLEEP. Exercise? Are you kidding me? I owed it to my myself not to. At least that's how I rationalized the less-than-perfect shape I was in when Finn celebrated his first birthday. Then I learned about 20 Minutes to Fitness, a place where you can supposedly get fit in just 20 minutes a week. I say “supposedly because I was skeptical. It went against everything I have ever heard and believed about fitness. But by this time, my knees hurt and my back ached. And 20 Minutes to Fitness' protocol was, by all accounts, medically based and performed on special physical therapy equipment. I mean, doctors work out there. Long story short: I tried it. And I liked it. Encouraged by my personal coach, I today work harder during those 20 minutes than any other time all week. Afterwards, I also feel better. My muscles are toned. My aches have gone away. My clothes fit better.
Jen Myers, 35, of Y98's Phillips & Co. with her son, Finn. By the way, 20 Minutes to Fitness isn't just for new moms. It's great for anyone who is starved for time: elite high school athletes, busy professionals, car-pool captains. That includes dads, too. Thanks to 20 Minutes to Fitness, we can all spend more time doing the things that really matter. I mean, look at my baby. Then give 20 Minutes to Fitness a call. Tell them Jen sent you.
For more information on 20 Minutes to Fitness, call its studios in Clayton (314-863-7836) or Chesterfield (636-536-1504) or visit www.20minutestofitness.com.

I
t’s hard to believe 2010 is already coming to a close—it’s been an eventful year. At ALIVE, we launched the new ALIVEMag.com after months and months (ok, a year) of planning, we put on our biggest Saint Louis Fashion Week yet and we’re rolling out an exciting new digital product, STL DailyFix, early this month. As we reflect on all our team has celebrated this year with contributors, clients and readers, we can’t help but pinch ourselves and feel extremely lucky to have so many wonderful people who come together as a part of the ALIVE community. For most, the holidays are a time to focus our energies on our families and loved ones, and on preparing for new goals and commitments in the New Year. This year’s “Wish List” feature (p.77), put together by Associate Editor Sheniqua Faulkner, should serve as a helpful resource to you as you venture out to find the perfect gifts for the important people in your life. This month, actor/musician and coverboy Bryan Greenberg brings gifts of his own to his hometown. The Parkway Central Alum and star of HBO’s “How to Make It in America” wraps up a 13-city concert tour at the Old Rock House on December 18. We caught up with Bryan, who shares his thoughts on stardom and songwriting on page 66. Words can’t express what a delight it was to also sit down with Michael Eastman, who graces the back page of this month’s issue. His advice on surviving as an artist, being in the moment and finding beauty in unexpected places was beyond inspiring. Check out this month’s Archetypes Q+A and catch extra tidbits on ALIVEMag.com in the “Slice of Sanity” blog. We hope you join us in celebrating the holidays and another amazing year at ALIVE’s holiday party at Mandarin on December 10. Cheers!

Getting the chance to interview Bryan Greenberg for this month’s cover story was an unexpected and much-appreciated holiday gift for Matt. And since he likes nothing better this time of year than to sit in front of a crackling fire in his fez and smoking jacket with an appropriate wintertime beverage, writing about festive seasonal cocktails (p.34) was an added yuletide bonus. No need for Santa to drop anything off at the Sorrell house this time around! When not banging away at his keyboard for a bevy of area publications, Matt spends an inordinate amount of time searching the South Side for the perfect shot-and-a-beer joint.
This month, contributor Derek Feldman photographed the “Wish List,” (p.77). Derek enjoys doing any type of product photography and was excited to help again with this issue. As a student earning a Bachelor Degree in Photography in the School of Communications at Webster University, he has covered digital, film and even Ophthalmic photography. Derek has freelanced in photography covering fashion, modeling, events, editorial and ad-based settings. He embraces every opportunity as a learning experience to help him grow as a photographer in heart and professionally.

Meka, your new mecca By jill manoff photo by josh kennon A self-described “girly-girl with a love for fashion,” Meg Meyer recently opened Chesterfield-based Meka Boutique (pronounced Meeka) to the delight of guys and gals who love to wear the latest trends. In addition to housing head-to-toe looks for her, including Wildfox Couture tees, Hudson jeans, Mariana jewelry, Old Gringo bags and boots by Zigi NY, Meka also sells a selection of tees and button-downs for him—because manly men love fashion, too (1634 Clarkson Rd., 636.536.6300).

came out to play a part in selecting St. Louis’ best burger at the ALIVE Top Chefs All-American Throwdown. Six chefs brought their best to the second annual event, and in the end, Chef Josh Roland from Wildflower took home the coveted title with a classic take, using all housemade ingredients. “I wanted it to be as All-American as you can get, both traditional, yet refined,” says Roland. The burger included a combo of ground sirloin, chuck and brisket, grilled perfectly and layered with homemade bacon and pickles, chopped greens, tomato confit, smoked cheddar, topped with a slightly zesty black pepper mustard and bacon mayo on a brioche bun from Companion. St. Louisians Sound Off Six well-known personalities share what’s on their must-have holiday wish lists. By CRISTY MILLER | illustrations by sarah quatrano
HEIDI GLAUS NEWSCHANNEL 5, KSDK “I’m a huge Wynonna Judd fan, and on December 4, it will be the 23rd time I’ve seen her in concert. I’ve even traveled to seven states for shows! So the perfect Christmas present would be a one-onone interview with Wy. My birthday is Christmas Eve and that would be one gift I would even accept as a birthday/Christmas gift together.”
SAM BRADFORD Quarterback, ST. LOUIS RAMS “Since I’m away from home, I would like more than anything to spend time with my family for Christmas.”
DEB PETERSON COLUMNIST, ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH “I would love to get the gift of a ‘chef of the month.’ In my fantasy, a chef from one of St. Louis’ great restaurants would cater dinner for me and my family once a month. I would like this for a variety of reasons; mainly so I could sample what’s offered without having to make it a busman’s holiday. With all the going out I do, I enjoy the opportunity to stay home. And I also have to confess, I do not love to cook.”
PAUL HA DIRECTOR, CONTEMPORARY ART MUSEUM ST. LOUIS “For the holidays this year, I think my family is going to try to spend some extra time with my mom. We always visit for a couple of days during Christmas, but she is getting on in her years and I very much want my children to remember her as a vibrant fun grandma. So we’ll be down in the Washington D.C. area for a few extra days.”
NELLY HIP-HOP STAR “Quality time at home with the fam!”
KARLIE KLOSS MODEL “I love to cook, and I especially love to bake! My list includes classes at Kitchen Conservatory in Clayton. I would love to learn culinary tips and techniques from the pros! I can spend hours at Williams Sonoma! Gadgets and tools make the whole process more fun. I’m starting an empire of red KitchenAid tools. I already have quite the collection, but trust me (like shoes), you can never have too many kitchen tools!”

Sautéed foie gras with roasted peaches
A new traditional French restaurant is a charming destination in Chesterfield. By Cristy Miller | Photos by jonathan pollack
> Fancy French restaurants are a rare breed in St. Louis; with the exception of a few contemporary spots, traditional French destinations are few and far between. So I was genuinely interested in getting the scoop on a new bistro that opened in Town and Country in late September. The Space You wouldn’t expect to find a high-end restaurant like Bistro 1130 in a teeny strip mall between a boutique and pet food bakery, but the interior feels like a completely different space; polarized windows keep the lighting low, and black, brown and dark gold hues dominate the 45-seat space. The interior is majestic 32 ALIVE STL DECEMBER 2010
The Fare The menu features all the things you’d expect from a traditional French bistro—sweetbreads, foie gras and French onion soup. Portions are substantial and traditional cooking techniques and flavors carry the menu. For starters, the jumbo lump crab martini offered a light appetizer, with hearts of palm over a vodka tomato gelee. The foie gras is served over roasted caramelized peaches and a crispy potato galette, with mixed greens tossed in a champagne vinaigrette. Entrées are comprised of seasonal, locally sourced ingredients and don’t veer far from the classics—the trio of lamb chops combines pan-seared Colorado lamb, presented three ways; goat cheese, herbes de Provence and Boursin cheese crusted, served with a melt-inyour-mouth potato dauphinoise and traditional ratatouille. The dauphinoise, a rich creation that layers thinly sliced potato with crème fraiche and cheese, commonly Gruyere, also makes an appearance with the spinach and
wild mushroom-filled chicken breast entrée. There’s also a seared veal loin with lobster and leek confit with a white truffle emulsion that adds a nice finish to the hearty dish. On to desserts: Miranne’s father is a pastry chef in France and most of his desserts are passed-down recipes—apparent in their taste, preparation and presentation. The spoken dessert menu features bananas foster and cherry jubilee served tableside, a rich and thick chocolate mousse with Grand Marnier and crepes Suzettete. The two to try are the lemon tart and lavender crème brulée; the first is a delicate mix of lemon custard and crème anglaise in a fresh baked shell and the brulée is vanilla infused with lavender, with a perfectly caramelized top layer and served with two small beignets.

yet cozy—with a floor-to-ceiling wine rack, floral arrangements and a hand-painted gold “grapevine” chandelier. The interior reflects owner Mikki Miranne’s design background; the cuisine clearly reflects her husband’s, Frenchborn and trained chef Eric Miranne.

In the Spirit By matt sorrell | Photos by jennifer silverberg
From pumpkin and cinnamon to nutmeg and peppermint—nothing gets us in the holiday spirit like the aromatic reminders of the season. But you don’t need to spend time in your mother’s kitchen to get a lil’ yuletide fix; just head to your local hot spot where creative cocktails abound with these nostalgic flavors. Like the proverbial Santa’s elves, local mixologists are hard at work, coming up with new and tasty ways to help keep us toasty on those cold winter nights. Consider these flavorful wintertime concoctions from three St. Louis spots.
34 ALIVE STL DECEMBER 2010
1 Chocolate Candy Cane Martini The combination of chocolate and peppermint immediately conjures up visions of wintertime merriment. David Bailey of Baileys’ Chocolate Bar has combined these favorite flavors into what may very well be the liquid embodiment of a sleigh ride, the Chocolate Candy Cane Martini. He takes candy cane ice cream and two types of chocolate liqueurs, then puts them through a milkshake machine to produce the ultimate glass of frosty good cheer (1915 Park Ave., Lafayette Square, 314.241.8100).
1 2 The Gingerbread Man Martini The gingerbread man has come out of the kitchen and bellied up to the bar. Mixologist Dani Davis of Van Gohz wanted to do something different from the usual holiday nogs and ciders, so with Skyy ginger vodka as a base, she came up with The Gingerbread Man. This libation gets its flavorful depth from Irish Cream and Buttershots schnapps, tinged with splashes of Jägermeister and Goldschlager cinnamon schnapps. Add a little nutmeg and you have a new yuletide classic! (3200 Shenandoah St., Tower Grove, 314.865.3345).
3 Pumpkin Buttered Rum Cocktail Terrene is known for using the bounty of area purveyors to create amazing meals. Bar manager (and co-owner) Sunny McElwain has rerouted some of that goodness to the bar to craft a sublime take on a traditional holiday cocktail. Her Hot Pumpkin Buttered Rum incorporates local pumpkin into the butter itself to produce a deep, rich flavor. Then she adds just a touch of Monin pumpkin syrup, often used for specialty coffee drinks, and two types of rum to bump the taste to the North Pole (33 N. Sarah St., Central West End, 314.535.5100).

old-fashioned warm up Warm up with this gourmet take on an old favorite.
Nothing tastes better on a cold day than a cup of good ol’ hot chocolate, and Crepes: Etc., whips up one of the best. No powdered mix here, Chef Eric Kelly’s secret is using discs of Abuelita chocolate, a Mexican variety that melts down in milk just so. Topped with a homemade marshmallow, this drink is guaranteed to transport you back to your childhood. But don’t be afraid to grow up and try the adult version with a drizzle of your choice of Godiva white or dark chocolate liqueur (52 Maryland Plaza, Central West End, 314.367.2200).

At Apple of Your Eye, a store packed with whimsical gifts for every occasion, owner Kerry can take nearly anything in the store and give it a personalized touch. The best part is, she can personalize gifts while you wait; Anything to save time during this hectic season is a plus in my book. I love the store’s selection of holiday ornaments, jewelry and home décor items, all which Kerry can hand paint or etch with a name or special message.
I have a few girlfriends who love to be pampered, and at Bella Capelli Salon, they know how to make a girl (or guy) look and feel good. Their staff of talented stylists and estheticians stay on the cutting edge of the industry and use the latest techniques for cuts and color services. I pick up a few gift cards for the gals. With all of the parties and events coming up, what better gift than a fresh look for the New Year?
At first, Yo My Goodness, a self-serve frozen yogurt shop that opened just a few months ago, lures me in with its bright and cherry lime-green interior. It keeps me intrigued with the 12 flavors of frozen yogurt and over 24 toppings waiting to be sampled. During the holidays, the shop offers seasonal flavors such as pumpkin pie, gingerbread and cranberry. Gift cards and quarts are available for gifting, or simply treat yourself to a cup after a long day of shopping. No guilty conscience here; each four-ounce serving is just 100 calories. What’s more, the yogurt and some of the fresh toppings are sourced locally.

Back in the Saddle Defined by riding breeches, riding boots and blazers that border on show coats, the equestrian trend takes the reins this winter. By Jill Manoff | Photos by carmen troesser
> Right out of the gate, it was clear that designers were riding high on the idea of riding horseback in Fall/Winter 2010—or at least hyping the associated uniform. Models trotted many a February runway in jodhpurs, hacking jackets and redingotes—the likes of which we’ve come to expect from Hermès, Gucci and Salvatore Ferragamo, but it was John Galliano who seemed to lead the pack this lap around. The ever-dramatic designer set the tone for his heavily equestrian-themed Dior collection with a horse’s “neigh” that played at its show’s commencement. The sound acted like a starting pistol, launching a season of stores stocked with saddle bags, breeches and all things horse-bitten—and igniting fashion devotees’ unbridled love for stable-fitting styles. Go With The Faux This season, warm up to fake fur everything—from coats and vests to fluffy extras. By Jill Manoff | PHOTOS BY carmen troesser
With a dress:
Coat
> Few Fall 2010 shows concluded without the appearance of at least one fur-laden model prowling the catwalk, making fur the most ferocious trend to debut on the runways. From patchwork fur vests to plush peacoats to cushy chubbies, the season seemed centered on warm fuzzies—a scenario that could have called for a PETA intervention, but not so. The reason? An abundance of designers, including fashion’s major players, opted to pepper faux fox, sable and mink into their collections, versus the controversial (and more costly; economydriven?) real deal. Karl Lagerfeld, for one, seemed to let the fur fly at Chanel, but as it turns out, utilized imposter pelts to make up everything from a new take on the brand’s classic chain-strapped bag to this season’s bodyencompassing yeti suit. Thanks to the overwhelming number of ways to wear the trend this season, we decided to narrow down the pool to a few top picks; choose a favorite, or go wild and work all three.

Amazing Lace This season, get holey rolling in jewelry’s fabulous filigree trend. By jill manoff | photo by carmen troesser >Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but nothing says feminine like a hint of delicate lace. Combine the two elements, and you’ve got one of this season’s most talked-about jewelry trends. Mirroring the lace-ridden ready-to-wear pieces seen on the runways of Ralph Lauren, Louis Vuitton and Valentino, intricate filigree jewelry laced with diamonds seems the focal point of many a fine accessories designer—recently turning up as openwork brooches, bracelets and cuffs, and defining entire Fall/Winter collections. As bold as chunkier pieces thanks to great attention to detail, classic and beautiful filigree jewelry is perfect for anyone wanting to appear equal parts on-trend, timeless and ladylike. Hint: Pairing with last season’s leather and skull extras will cancel the effect.

Where I Live
In The Heart of Downtown
The Syndicate is located in one of the best Downtown neighborhoods. The Old Post Office District is home to Culinaria, Left Bank Books, City Gourmet, the Central Express Library and Left Bank Books plenty of other retail and restaurant options, including one of my new favorite haunts, Bridge.
Top-of-the-Line Design
The Syndicate has everything from threestory penthouses to one-bedroom artist lofts. The sleek interiors and classic exteriors make it one of the most beautiful buildings Downtown. As someone who loves modern design and can’t live without lots of natural light, I especially appreciate the large “Chicago-style” windows, the sliding glass doors and open floorplans. The high-end fixtures, cabinets, countertops and wood floors are totally customizable, so the spaces fit every style.
All About The Amenities
Amenities are unmatched here; while you may not find me playing billiards in the Syndicate’s amazingly furnished game room/ media room, I do utilize the 24-hour, on-site gym. The building also has an art gallery space and workshop area for creatives to work on their projects. One of my favorite things about the building, I must admit, is the heated indoor parking garage—no
more scraping windshields in winter for me! Cars could be optional for some, however; the WeCar car-sharing program is set up for the neighborhood and the 8th & Pine Metrolink station is half a block away.
Culture & Community
I love that I’m surrounded by creatives and professionals alike. I can go to the art gallery housed in my building to see works by my neighbors, chat with the businesspeople in my building or walk across the street to Left Bank Books for a documentary or book reading with fellow downtown dwellers. The Old Post Office Plaza is in my backyard, showing films during the summer, while the new Citygarden is a block away and is the perfect place to gather creative inspiration or take a jog in warm weather.

Savor a New Year Bid farewell to 2010 and ring in a New Year with delicious eats and bubbly sips. By sheniqua faulkner
This year, host a New Year’s Eve fête at your place; it’s easier than you might think. All it takes is some smart preparation, a little time in the kitchen and keeping the Champagne flowing. Cheers!
Marinated London Broil
{The Fare} We love the idea of a sit-down NYE dinner, but that doesn’t mean you have to carve out hours preparing in the kitchen. Schnucks Cooks has created an easy but elegant meal that will keep guests sated through the hours of revelry ahead.
(Serves 4) WHAT YOU NEED: • 1 garlic clove, minced • 1/2 cup dry red wine • 1/4 cup less-sodium soy sauce • 1/4 cup Schnucks honey • 1/2 teaspoon crushed dried rosemary • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • 1/4 teaspoon Schnucks chili powder • 1 Certified Angus Beef® round for London Broil (about 1 1/2 pounds) WHAT TO DO:
1. In medium bowl, with whisk, Log on schnucksc to ook for more re s.com cipes.
{Perfect Pairing} With an refined dish such as this, a wine that’s equally as elegant is in order. We like Sterling Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($28.99 at Schnucks), a beautifully spicy and fruity wine with hints of cedar and toasty oak. The smooth and silky tannins of this pour make it a great accompaniment to beef dishes as well as ripe cheeses.
Forget casual mentions or emailed invites—publicize your party with paper. No matter the length of your guest list or level of formality, Vellum (314.909.1640, velluminc.com) has the perfect customizable invitation for your New Year’s Eve bash. How cute are these cheeky countdowninspired invites by designer Stacy Claire Boyd? (10 personalized invitations, $40)
50 ALIVE STL DECEMBER 2010
{The Snacks} To make it easy for guests to nibble throughout the night, set out an assortment of light bites that take little or no prep at all. Schnucks Des Peres store has an impressive selection of fine cheeses and Downtown’s Culinaria location has so many easy options in their prepared foods department, you’ll be able to offer plenty of choices for guests to enjoy. The folks at Schnucks can even put together a customized platter of party favorites.
2. Preheat grill pan over medium heat. Remove steak from bag; discard marinade. Cook 12 to 14 minutes, turning once halfway through cooking, or until internal temperature reaches 135°F for medium-rare. Transfer steak to cutting board. Let stand 10 minutes. Temperature will rise to 145°F upon standing. Thinly slice steak across the grain to serve.
{The Sips} Keep your guests’ flutes full and their spirits high with high-quality Champagnes. Our picks include Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin, a rich, creamy pour that has a well-balanced quality that make it easy to sip ($44.99 at Schnucks). You also can’t go wrong with Moet & Chandon, a mild champagne with small, active bubbles. It’s a great choice for guests who prefer a lighter, more delicate Champagne ($34.99 at Schnucks). Tip: To open a Champagne or sparkling wine bottle with ease—and to avoid injury or property damage—place a bar towel or linen napkin over the cork and slowly twist the bottle, not the cork, keeping your hand stationary over the top. You’ll have much more leverage. And when filling flutes, pour down the center of the glass for maximum bubbles.

combine all ingredients except steak. Place steak in large zip-tight plastic bag. Pour marinade in bag; seal bag, pressing out excess air. Refrigerate 12 to 24 hours to marinate.

Stress Less Tightly wound from seasonal stress? Relax and release with one of these editor-selected spa massages. By sheniqua faulkner
It’s supposedly the most wonderful time of year, but tell that to your pounding headache and tension-filled neck and back. Who can escape the season unscathed when there are heaps of food to be prepared and mounds of gifts to be wrapped? In a season filled with giving to others, why not give yourself a break? Recharge your yuletide power switch with one of these editor-approved massages, and you’ll be feeling like your brightly spirited self in no time. The Rubdown: Hot Stone Where to Get It: A True Spa This ancient form of massage incorporates gently heated Basalt stones, which are applied to key points on the body. A True Spa’s version is a full-on hour of total relaxation and has benefits beyond the masseuse’s table: the heated stones are believed to increase circulation, a process that helps eliminate built-up toxins in the body. The soothing heat also relaxes muscles, which helps the therapist more effectively perform deep-tissue massage. As you leave the spa, notice as your Grinch-like ’tude is replaced with a merry-andbright disposition (116 Chesterfield Commons East Rd., Chesterfield, 636.537.3227, atruespa.com). The Rubdown: Reflexology Where to Get It: The Spa at Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis After hours of shopping, cooking or running around in the snow with the kiddos, your feet have had it. The Spa at Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis’ Reflexology treatment uses this ancient technique of foot massage to focus on pressure points that correspond to the body’s vital organs. You’ll leave with increased all-over energy and feet that are ready for anything (999 N. 2nd St., Downtown, 314.881.5800, fourseasons.com/stlouis).

The Rubdown: Couples’ Suite Escape Where to Get It: Body Options From arguing with your spouse about money to flying off the handle when your mother makes a comment about your cooking, it seems the holidays can cause tension not only in your body, but also in your personal relationships. Extend a truce and treat yourself and a loved one to a couples’ massage at Body Options, which features your choice of traditional Swedish, invigorating Deep-Tissue or stress-melting Hot Stone massage. Mary Merriweather says the treatment is not just for lovers—customers bring their daughters, co-workers and best friends—and that it’s not just for post-holiday stress. “We get a lot of couples
The Rubdown: Chakra Balancing Massage Where to Get It: Ginger Bay Salon and Spa Although you may think meditation and “centering” are for master-yogi-wheatgrasssipping types, you’ll be singing a different tune after a Chakra Balancing Massage at Ginger Bay. This Aveda concept spa uses a trademarked blend of deep tissue massage of the back and spinal muscles, reflexology and energy work for each of the seven chakras. Ayurvedic tradition recognizes chakras as junctions between mind and body. The belief is when we focus on the chakras, we can connect our physical, emotional and spiritual selves to create balance. MassageLuxe offers all types of massage, from Swedish to Trigger Point, and their gift cards make it convenient to load up on stocking stuffers for your stressed-out friends or co-workers. And with multiple locations throughout the city, this is one gift that is easy for you to pick up and just as easy for your recipient to use. And believe us, they will (massageluxe.com).

Recently Ringed Three St. Louis couples share their engagement stories.
How We Met: We met at one of our favorite Soulard bars on a night out with friends in the spring of 2006. Not looking for a relationship, I was hesitant in giving Mick my number that night. In the end, his continuous persistence paid off. A week or two later, we went on our first date at Hacienda Mexican Restaurant and had a great time. After several months of dating, I learned that Mick would be leaving town in the fall for law school. Even though we knew a long distance relationship would be tough, we knew we wanted to give it a shot. Through weekend visits, long distance calls, and lots of patience, we actually grew closer than I could have ever imagined. The Proposal: Mick and I usually walk our dog, Bailey, through Forest Park together every Saturday. Before we went, Mick said he had to go to the bank to make deposits before it closed. When he got back, we left to walk and Mick kept trying to bring up the future and where I saw us in ten years.
It was a hot day, so to avoid our normal run up Art Hill, I tried to convince Mick to take a shortcut. I wasn’t very convincing, so we started up the hill. Mick trailed a couple steps behind me, paused and said, “Isn’t this view beautiful,” I turned around to find him on one knee holding out a diamond ring. Without hesitation, I practically tackled him and started crying and said “YES!” Then we walked to the side of Art Hill to find a rose and a bottle of champagne. Mick had been at the park setting the scene while he said he was going to “the bank.” The Big Day: September 24, 2011
The Couple: Michelle Anne Kinney, 29 & Andrew Rex Reinink, 28
The Couple: Michelle Frossard, 28 & Paul Paradoski, 25
How We Met: We met our first year in graduate school at Washington University; Michelle in PT school, me in Medical school. We both lived in the med school dorm, Olin Hall, that first year, and I’d see this beautiful blonde girl studying in the little café we had in the hall. We struck up a conversation when she came to the movie night I’d organized, and we hit it off immediately, discovering we both attend the same church (Bethel Lutheran in U. City). But we didn’t begin dating for over two years when finally we realized we were perfect for each other and officially became a couple in the spring of 2007.
How We Met: Paul and I met in college at Southeast Missouri State where I played soccer and he played basketball. We had some mutual friends and knew each other just from being athletes at a fairly small school, but we never really hung out. It wasn’t until we were both back in St. Louis after college when we really “met.” We ended up both buying a condo in Ballwin a building away from each other and ran into one another at a nearby restaurant and realized we were neighbors. One night I got stranded at my condo and went down to see if I could borrow a phone charger. We ended up talking for a long time, and the next day, we went to the Cardinals home opener together with some friends.
The Proposal: We’d been talking about marriage, and had looked at rings together at a couple of jewelers, but she had no idea that anything was imminent. She’s pretty sharp, so I had to figure out a way to make a special night without arousing her suspicions. The Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend marked 2 1/2 years since our first date, so I proposed a nice dinner to celebrate. The location was a surprise, but once I turned south on Big Bend, she knew right away—Harvest! We had an absolutely amazing dinner and then drove to the foot of the Grand Basin, the sight of many romantic walks early in our courtship. The warm air, glowing fountains and dazzling Art Museum overlooking the basin made for a wonderful setting, and while strolling, I stopped, looked into her eyes, dropped to one knee, and with the ring in my hand, I asked her to be my wife. We rounded out the night calling family and friends to share our joy.
The Proposal: He had planned a surprise for my birthday and took me to a nice dinner at the Four Seasons on the rooftop. At dinner he was acting a bit weird, but I didn’t think much of it. After dinner we were going to have a couple of drinks outside before meeting up with friends. We went outside and the manager greeted us and took us to a cabana overlooking the Arch. There was a bottle of champagne, chocolate covered strawberries and rose petals. I was shocked when I saw everything and thought he was really going overboard for my birthday. When we sat down he handed me a really sweet birthday card, and then next thing I knew, he was getting on one knee and asking me to marry him. The manager came back over and said he had one more surprise— we walked out from the cabana and all of our family and friends were there to surprise me.

Classically Glamorous These college sweethearts planned their big day with equal parts tradition and chic sophistication. By Sheniqua Faulkner | Photos by Stephen Seebeck Photography
The C o
uple Macke nzie M e Adver yers, 2 tis 6 ing Ac ing & Marke , c o u nt Exe ttive, an cu27, Me d Sam Brow chanic al Proje n, Engine ct er >After Mackenzie Meyers and Sam Brown met at a mutual friend’s birthday party in St. Louis in 2006, they began dating while both attending the University of Missouri-Columbia. One evening, after a perfect dinner at Eleven Eleven Mississippi, Sam led Mackenzie onto his patio, which he’d filled with flowers and candles and had champagne waiting on ice. As their song, Coldplay’s “Till Kingdom Come,” played softly in the background, Sam took to one knee and asked Mackenzie to marry him. “I, of course, said yes, and we met our immediate family at Trattoria Branica,” says Mackenzie. The next day, the couple was joined by more well-wishers for a Fourth of July/engagement celebration. THE PLANNING: Before the couple dove into the details, they sought the expertise of wedding planner extraordinaire Josie Littlepage of Cosmopolitan Events (cosmopolitanevents.com). “I had particular thoughts on what I wanted, and Josie was great at bouncing off ideas,” Mackenzie says. In addition to Littlepage’s help, Mackenzie and Sam knew they wanted Gebbs Total Video (gebbstotalvideo.com) to capture their big day. To the couple’s delight, Michael Gebben of Gebbs created a same-day edit of the footage he’d taken the morning of the wedding to share at the reception. “I loved seeing what Sam’s morning was like, and the guests loved it!” says Mackenzie. THE FLOWERS: Each of Mackenzie’s bridesmaids carried all-white bouquets arranged by florist Tony Montano of Montano Grant (montanogrant. 56 ALIVE STL DECEMBER 2010
com). “I personally selected each of my bridesmaids bouquets based on the meaning of the flower itself,” says Mackenzie. “Before we left for the ceremony, I gave each of them a handwritten letter describing what flower I chose for them, including its meaning.” Mackenzie’s bouquet was a mixture of her bridesmaids’ flowers, symbolizing how each of the women had helped make Mackenzie who she is. “I also added a family tradition with stephanotis flowers, which my mother and sister-in-law carried at their weddings.” THE STATIONERY: To showcase the couple’s modern aesthetic, they chose black, white and silver square-shape invitations from Vellum (velluminc.com). Each invite featured an embossed alligator border and envelope lining. The couple’s chandelier monogram was a design detail carried throughout the reception on cocktail napkins, dinner menus and illuminated gobos. THE GOWN: Mackenzie says she was set on finding an elegant, one-shoulder gown, and she fell in love with the Romona Keveza dress she ultimately selected the moment she tried it on. The mermaidsilhouetted gown featured a high-wasted belt and dramatic ruffle. A Swarovski-encrusted Toni Federici veil added more glamour to Mackenzie’s statement-making gown. THE CELEBRATION: After Mackenzie and Sam’s June 26th ceremony at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Clayton, guests were ready to celebrate at the reception. The Palladium (palladium-stl.com) had just been renovated, and the loft-like interior suited the
couple’s vision of keeping things young and fresh. For the cocktail reception, Exclusive Events (exclusiveevents.com) draped a white voile curtain from the ceiling to section off the cocktail area; when it was time for guests to take their seats for dinner, the curtain was pulled back to reveal the beautifully decorated dining area. Each table featured six all-white flower arrangements and were illuminated with 15 candles. Other touches included an 8-foot illuminated bar, a white dance floor that was projected with pattered gobos and custom lighting from Aries Co. (ariesco.com). As the evening lingered on, soft lighting shades of pink and lilac progressed to deeper fuchsias and purples. Sam and Mackenzie glided to the floor to their first dance to Coldplay’s “Till Kingdom Come,” the song playing during Sam’s proposal. THE FARE: “My father was intent on having guests enjoy great food and drink,” says Mackenzie. “So choosing the Palladium was perfect, because Butler’s Pantry (butlerspantry.com) did an amazing job.” During the cocktail hour, guests enjoyed passed hors d’oeuvres, including empanadas, crab cakes and prosciutto-wrapped asparagus. For dinner, Mackenzie and Sam chose a surfand-turf option featuring seared scallops—one of the couples’ favorite foods—and petite filet. The Cakery (thecakerybakery.net) created a beautiful three-tiered, all-white cake featuring a cascading satin ribbon that mimicked Mackenzie’s dress. To cap off the elegant evening, guests were provided with sparklers to send the newlyweds off in shimmering style. alivemag.com

Get Involved: Making Spirits Bright Make a donation to a local toy drive and help spread holiday cheer to children in St. Louis this season.
Project ARK’s Holiday Gold for Kids
> For underprivileged St. Louis families, the holidays are unfortunately like any other day; they may not have the means to purchase gifts for their children. Due to the staggering cost of treating an ongoing illness, job loss or just a tough economy, many families must focus on the basic necessities rather than toys for the kids. With the help of caring individuals and groups, the organizers of these three area toy drives hope to bring similes to the faces of St. Louis youngsters during the season of giving. Here’s how you can help. Project ARK’s Holiday Gold for Kids
A division of the Washington University School of Medicine, Project ARK provides services for children, young adults, women and families affected by HIV disease. The center coordinates medical care, social support and prevention services. In addition to providing these vital

services, Project ARK collects toys and funds for over 1,000 children affected by HIV/AIDS in the St. Louis Metro area during their annual Holiday Gold for Kids Toy Drive. Because the cost of medical care for these families is so profound, the toys donated to the drive are typically the only gifts these children receive for the holidays. You can help by providing a new, unwrapped toy for children 1-14 years of age; collecting gift certificates or making a monetary donation to assist organizing with toy-drive shopping or organize a toy drop-off at your workplace or child’s school classroom (projectark.wustl.edu). Marine Toys for Tots Foundation
Toys for Tots, the philanthropic brainchild of Major Bill Hendricks, USCR, and his wife Diane, got its start in 1947. The first year, Hendricks and a group of Marine Reservists in L.A. collected and distributed 5,000 toys to children in need. With the pilot program’s success, the Marine Corps adopted Toys for Tots in 1948 and expanded it into a nationwide campaign. To this day, the organization collects new toys for underprivileged children in the
months of October, November and December so that they can experience the joy of the holiday season. Drop a new toy off at one of the dozens of sites listed on the organization’s local website, including Fox Theatre, Downtown Urgent Care and The Lifestyle Center. If you’re a business owner, contact Toys for Tots to become an official toy drop spot (bridgeton-mo.toysfortots. org). Children’s Hospital Wish List
Throughout the year, and especially during the holidays, Children’s Hospital of St. Louis needs specific items for various places throughout the hospital including their child life playroom, teen lounge, library and waiting areas. The Hospital’s Wish List includes musical toys, puzzles and multicultural dolls for the youngsters, and craft kits, gift cards, books and electronic handheld games for teens. Gifts should be new, unwrapped and safe for children. Whether a child is in the hospital for a couple of hours or for a few weeks, these gifts help bring hope, smiles and joy during their stay (stlouischildrens.org).

hen we last touched base with Bryan Greenberg in 2007, the actor/musician (and Parkway Central alum) was a busy guy. After some minor TV roles (“One Tree Hill,” “Boston Legal”), and a 2005 big-screen part in “Prime,” his career was gaining momentum, and he was prepping for his starring role in the ABC drama “October Road.” Three years later, it’s only gotten more fast-paced, with two films released last year (romantic comedy “Bride Wars” and Wall Street flick “The Good Guy”) and two more coming out in 2011.
ALIVE: You’re getting ready to start a winter tour. Are you going to have any time to spend here in St. Louis when you come through this month? Bryan Greenberg: It’s the last night of the tour, so we’re going to have a good time afterward I’m sure! I’m really excited to come back. I have a lot of love for St. Louis. It’s home, and I try and come back a few times a year. ALIVE: You’re touring with a band this time—what do you think that will be like? BG: It’s going to be fun because I’ve never really done that, I’ve always toured acoustic. It’ll give the fans something different. ALIVE: Who are some of your biggest musical influences? BG: Elliott Smith is probably one of the biggest on this record, and the Black Keys. I love hip hop, so that’s always there in my songs—not overtly, but there’s a sense of rhythm I like to adhere to. I definitely have an indie singer/songwriter influence, too.
But in the new “golden age of television,” the small screen is where he’s currently making the most buzz—his HBO drama-comedy series “How To Make It In America” airs its second season this spring. The series, executive produced by Mark Wahlberg, follows two twenty-something fashion designers trying to hustle their way to the top of the NYC fashion scene—one of whom is Greenberg, an NYU grad who himself had to hustle his way around as an up-and-coming actor, working multiple jobs while auditioning for roles in his first years there.
ALIVE: On your first album, “Waiting For Now,” you wrote all your own material. What about on this album? BG: For the first time, I collaborated with some other songwriters. I was really apprehensive about it, but it was great. Sometimes, I’ve had a hook in my head for years and couldn’t put a verse to it, so it was good this time to be able to bounce ideas off someone else. I’m definitely open to doing more of it in the future.
It seems that juggling multiple gigs suits him; in the midst of all his acting jobs, he continues to work on his music as well. His second album, “We Don’t Have Forever,” is ready to drop and he begins a 13-city tour December 1, with the final show happening in his hometown at the Old Rock House on December 18.
ALIVE: Do you ever worry about being labeled as “an actor who dabbles in music” or vice versa? BG: I do, kind of. But I approach both acting and music from a place of love and passion, and I’m not trying to micromanage how people see me. I’m just creating, and people judge it how they judge it. Hopefully, if it’s all

coming from a real and honest place, then it’ll be accepted. I’m not trying to be anybody but me, not a rock star or a movie star. I’m just trying to do good work in both arenas. ALIVE: How do the two things influence each other—your music and your acting? BG: Sometimes a character I play will influence a song I write. And sometimes after being on tour and performing in front of hundreds of people with just a microphone and a guitar, going into a room with 10 people to do a scene doesn’t seem so scary. When I’m in the trailer shooting a movie or a TV show, I’ll have my guitar with me. They both help each other in a sense. ALIVE: You just finished work on two new films—what are they? BG: I have “Friends With Benefits,” with Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis, which is a romantic comedy. It should be out next summer. And I just finished a dark comedy, an indie called “Normals,” and they may try to take it on the festival circuit. The life of an indie film is crazy. They can sell it, take it to festivals, so I don’t know the future of that. ALIVE: You’ve done a lot of network TV, and now you have a successful HBO series. How is it different working for HBO as opposed to a network? BG: I prefer HBO, because they don’t have any advertisers they have to answer to. They just make decisions based on content. They do whatever they think is good, and it’s great to work like that. I’m just honored to be on a great network and a great show. ALIVE: Would you consider doing another TV series after this project is over? BG: Sure. I don’t judge what context the material is in, I just go by the
material. Wherever there’s good writing, that’s where I’ll be. I’d never box myself in and say I wouldn’t do TV again. I feel like we’re living in the golden age of television right now, with shows like “Mad Men” and “Breaking Bad” and “Boardwalk Empire.” People are watching more TV than movies. ALIVE: At this point in your career, is it easier to get roles? BG: It might be easier to get roles, but the more work you do, it’s harder to change people’s perception of you. That’s what I’m running up against now, trying to get roles that people wouldn’t necessarily see me in. I like doing the romantic comedies, but I also like doing the indie stuff where I can be a little more challenged and test myself and the audience’s notions of me. ALIVE: What’s next? Do you have a “five-year plan”? BG: No, but for the first time I have my year planned out, which for an actor or musician is pretty good! I can honestly say I know what I’m doing in six months, which is an accomplishment! The music for me is definitely much more of a passion—when you go around the country in a van, it’s more than dabbling—but at the same time, I’m not trying to get signed to a major label or anything. I’m doing it because I love it, so I really don’t have a plan when it comes to music. As far as acting, I’d love for the show to continue and for fans to rally around it for a second season. In the meantime. I’d just like to challenge myself and work with great directors and great actors on great projects. Opposite: Bryan Greenberg photo by Melanie Nataf. Rose gold is the new “IT” metal for wedding and engagement rings.
In recent years, white gold and platinum have replaced gold as the metal for the perfect engagement ring. However, gold—specifically, rose gold— seems to be making a comeback. Katie Holmes and Mariah Carey both flaunt rings with this highfashion hue! Why? Every girl wants her diamond to stand out, and choosing a rose-gold band does just that! Since the color has a tint of pink, it is soft and romantic, yet is still traditional. So remember, when you are choosing the perfect gem, rose gold is golden. Mavrik Fine Jewelry is on top of the trend and has been designing more and more of the rose-gold jewels. Visit Mavrik in Kirkwood this winter to choose from the oneof-a-kind, romantic collection.

ALIVE Magazine’s 2010 Annual
Company Retreat at Moonrise Hotel
B
The ALIVE team returned to this cosmically cool boutique hotel to plan another exciting year.
oasting comfort, eye-catching design, attentive staff and accommodating meeting spaces, Moonrise Hotel once again served as the two-day home base for ALIVE to hold its annual company retreat. The choice to return to the quirky boutique hotel was a no-brainer; Locals and visitors alike have recognized Moonrise as one of the top choices for lodging and business meetings. Since opening in March 2009, the hotel has become a top-rated St. Louis area hotel by TripAdvisor.com.
BUSINESS AMENITIES The motif at Moonrise might be an out-of-this-world lunar dreamland, but the hotel’s business accommodations are down-to-earth and practical. The spacious executive conference rooms, named after the Apollo 8 and Apollo 11 moon missions, can be arranged based on any group’s needs. These state-ofthe-art spaces are stocked with everything the ALIVE team needed for productivity, including complimentary high-speed wireless Internet and high-definition audio-visual projectors. And to keep stomachs satisfied and thirsts quenched, Moonrise staff kept the refreshments stocked. The freshly brewed coffee, tea, juice, soda and snacks were a welcome source of energy as the ALIVE staff planned 2011 company goals. SLEEK DESIGN The striking interior of Moonrise is eye-catching from the moment guests step inside. The beautifully illuminated main staircase has been recognized in national design contests, while the lobby features sleek minimalist furnishings, lunar artwork, vintage toys and memorabilia from the Apollo missions.
Moonrise’s guest rooms are equally impressive, and feature luxurious Serta “Enrapture” eurotop beds, top-of-the-line bedding, 32-inch plasma TVs, iPod docking stations, soothing walk-in rain showers and spa-like bath products from H20+. After a long day of meetings, the ALIVE team was happy to unwind in comfortable surroundings and recharge for the next day of planning. Some relaxed in their rooms, while others took advantage of the 24-hour fitness center. DELICIOUS FARE & FABULOUS VIEWS The culinary creators at Moonrise’s Eclipse Restaurant provided tasty lunch options during ALIVE’s two-day retreat. Eclipse’s award-winning menu offered something for every appetite, including staff favorites like the Open-Faced B.L.A.T. sandwich, featuring bacon, lettuce, avocado and sundried tomato mayo on grilled multigrain bread, and the the tempting teriyaki-glazed turkey burger on a soft brioche bun, served with tempura squash fries. Before wrapping up a successful retreat, the ALIVE team was thrilled to take time to enjoy cocktails on Moonrise’s beautiful rooftop terrace, which features breathtaking views of the vibrant Loop and the St. Louis city skyline.

With three locations, Tucker’s Place has been serving St. Louis top-notch, prime steaks for over 25 years, as well as an array of other upscale American eats. At Tucker’s, the steak speaks for itself—tender and mouthwatering cuts that don’t hide behind the sauce and are cooked to perfection. Enjoy top entrees such as the 8-ounce filet mignon, the 16-ounce New York strip or the 20–ounce Porterhouse; all are served with fresh mixed greens, “The Works” baked potato and a dinner roll. The cozy atmosphere makes Tucker’s Place a must-visit spot for a casual lunch or delicious dinner.
Located in the Central West End, Herbie’s Vintage 72 is as top-notch as you can get for prime steak. Each steak is prepared by grill cook Marcos Rodriguez, who has manned the grill for over 10 years. Needless to say he’s perfected the art of cooking a tender, mouthwatering cut of beef and utilizes the kitchen’s wood burning grill to impart maximum flavor. The selection includes the Wellington of Beef, a classic staple at Herbie’s, splashed with golden raisin marsala sauce and served with haricots vert and carrots, and the delicious Beef Tenderloin is a must-order, drizzled with garlic butter and wild mushroom and roasted garlic sauce and served with crispy gnocchi.

SLeeK Steakhouse
and Ultralounge
The phrase “grilled to perfection” is an understatement for SLeeK Steakhouse and Ultralounge. More like cut, selected, seasoned, grilled and served to perfection. But you wouldn’t expect anything less from celebrity chef and owner Huber t Keller, who opened this chic restaurant and lounge in the Lumière Place Casino & Hotels in February 2008. Since its debut, SLeeK has become synonymous with excellent steak, seafood and other upscale delights as well as its contemporary, see-and-be-seen atmosphere. To make it an evening at SLeeK, come for dinner, then stay late in the lounge for cocktails and DJ beats.
Superior Steak SLeeK’s menu features high-quality ingredients, sourced locally when available, and features items like oysters, shrimp scampi, crab cakes, Ahi tuna, French onion soup and halibut. But the real standout is the steak. All beef is hand-selected, corn-fed, USDA Prime and served a la car te, with a choice of gourmet sides such as truffle mac n’ cheese, creamed corn casserole with parmesan, baked sweet potato with brown sugar and potato au gratin. Satisfy everyone’s appetite, whether small or large, in your par ty—SLeeK offers options from tender 6-ounce petit filets to 36-ounce Por terhouses and then there’s the mouthwatering signature 36-ounce Tomahawk Bone-in Rib Eye and the Australian Kobe offered by the ounce. One thing’s for sure—you can add ‘satisfied to perfection’ to the list of aforementioned adjectives.
