Design Philosophy Design is more than working your way through a concept; design is about making people’s dreams become a reality and that is what I value most when it comes to design. I believe that people can contribute to the design world in a variety of ways. By working together we can help build a better community, allowing the visions of our clients to contribute to each and every design in some way. “It’s kind of fun to do the impossible,” Walt Disney once said; I live by this quote and I encourage fellow designers, thinkers, innovators, and creators to do the same because the feeling you get when you accomplish that “impossible” design is a feeling that can only be described as inspiring.

RETAIL ODYSSEY INC. This retail design project focused highly on brand development and concept development. The brand developed for this project was an eyeglass company called Odyssey Inc. Their mission was to provide customers with an eyeglass purchasing experience that was as simple and stress-free as purchasing a cup of coffee. Their brand was dedicated to creating an experience that allowed the customer to explore their own creativity while exploring the retail space. The final design reflects this mission through its floor plan, material selection, and custom furniture pieces.

Concept Development The concept behind the parametric wall was informed by sea fan coral. The flexible, repeating arms converge from each other to create a progressive growth. The negative space within these arms of coral are what inform the pattern of the wall. Pointed oval shapes of varied size are in close quarters to each other in order to reveal the vertical creeping pattern that is the positive space. The negative space helps to focalize the complex form and acts as an important entity in the design.

The main objective for this project was to design a home for an artist and his family to live in as well as a commercial space/ gallery for the artist to display and sell his work. The building shell that was used for the project is currently in Spokane, Washington and is occupied as a photography studio. The building was originally a school gym and auditorium. I knew moving forward with the design that I wanted to incorporate not only the artist’s aesthetic but also some aesthetics from the building’s original state. The building still had the original gym flooring and an auditorium sign which I included in the design. I specified for the gym flooring to be sanded and restained to keep a sense of history within the space. I pulled many earthy tones out of the slate slabs that the artist performed his work on and used that palette throughout the residential and commercial space. This design called for a very open floorplan with good circulation, allowing the family to move around their home comfortably.

Concept Development Conceptual development is a key component when designing for a client because it helps to give the design a sense of character, meaning, and depth. This is a bench I designed based heavily on the concept of the human form. For this specific project, we interviewed an artist and studied his artwork. I was able to draw inspiration from my artist’s stippled drawings showing off the way the human body moves. A triangular shape could be found throughout many of my artist’s drawings so I held onto that shape while designing the seating piece. Keeping ADA guidelines in mind, I designed a bench made of concrete slabs brought together by a wooden arch that was filled with greenery to bring life to the hard, cold material of the concrete.

Educational LITTLE FREE LIBRARY The found material that my design group collected was an Aria Plano, made in the 1970s in Anacortes, Washington. The concept developed with an end goal of creating a free little library that could return the used materials back to their home in Anacortes. Inspired by the northwest architecture found in Anacortes and the musical qualities of the piano, my design team and I moved forward with our design. The structure developed into a small scale, northwest style house. The rain chains were pulled taught to not only draw the water away from the structure, but to make sound when strummed. This maintained the musical quality of the structure and added an interactive element to the design.

Design Challenges For the Free Little Library project, the design challenge was finding a way to combine ideas from all team members into one final built model. To avoid conflict, we decided to assign roles to each member of the team. My primary role was to create a final video to showcase all of the hard work my team had put into our project. The video can be found at the link below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFk9b96cszw

Commercial ABSTERGO TECH. For this project, we worked closely with a client who was planning on expanding their office space abroad. My client was given a location in an existing building at 60 Holborn Viaduct, London, England. This building was located in close proximity to many small shopping areas with various food shops in the area as well. The building had easy access to a variety of transportation methods in the nearby area including several bus stops and the Chancery Lane Station. The building was to be occupied by several other tenants, allowing us access to one entire floor and 5,000 sf of a second floor. The goal was to create an office space that met the client’s current and future needs.

Concept Development The overall concept for this design was the idea of bringing the old together with the new in one harmonious design. This idea stemmed from the division of the Thames River between historic London and modern London. Inspiration for materiality and custom design features could be found from both sides of London. Materials such as brick and glass were used to represent both sides of London and bringing those materials together was representative of the Thames River bringing the city together as one. Modern day technology came into play when thinking of the future. Then there was the overall mobility of today’s workforce in comparison with the mobility of the city of London. How do Londoners move around the city? They generally travel together on the Tube, buses, and taxis versus traveling alone on their own path. This could be reflected heavily in the overall circulation of the floor plan. Applying the “old and new” into the office design in an exciting and innovative way spoke directly to the client’s fun personality.

Design Challenges The biggest design challenge for this project was creating a space plan that allowed all office spaces to flow together. Workstations, conference rooms, private offices, team spaces, and tech centers were all very important spaces in this office plan. As a solution to the design challenge, I decided to look at the floor space as if it were divided in half (similarly to how the Thames River divides London). I then proceeded to divide all required spaces so each half of the office building had at least one of each. The small portion of the second floor that Abstergo Tech. was given was used for the more casual spaces such as a bar, game room, workout center, and in-office suites.
