THE IMPORTANCE OF TRENDS AND TREND FORECASTING

7

‘A trend refers to a general direction or movement.’ (Stone, 2008.) It refers to the motion of upscale designers featuring a certain key piece of fashion in runway shows which follows on to retail designers featuring it in stores and catalogues and this leads to consumers, buying into this fashion trend.

People tend to believe that new trends are new ideas however, they tend to be similar to existing fashions and are a modification or perhaps an extension of a trend that already exists. ‘Therefore, many new fashions tend to be evolutionary rather than revolutionary.’ (Sproles & Burns, 1994.)

Trends allow the fashion industry to continue to evolve; keeping consumers interested in following fashion; as you can always develop your style with what becomes the latest trend. Trends can be influenced by a range of factors such as, social, economic and technological changes. For example, a social change that impacted fashion was the garconne look; ‘a boyish, youthful style, consisting of men’s jackets, ties and short hair’ it was totally inspired by menswear and ‘was the symbol of progressive women who pursued an independent life’. (Mendes & de la Haye, 1999.) Whereas, some fashion trends appear due to inspiration from economic conditions such as, the 2008 recession that saw consumers turn to ‘inexpensive (store) brands, discount retailers, and basic styles for their apparel needs.’ (Blume, 2008.)

Therefore, trends are vitally important and have a huge impact on the fashion industry as they can alter consumer behaviour in terms of what brands they buy from and the price ranges they are looking for. In today’s society of consumerism, trends allow consumers to fixate on the latest trends, thus increasing demand amongst the fashion industry. Trends are also essential to the fashion industry as communicating trends does not only involve trend forecasters but several other sectors of the fashion industry. ‘Consumers are influenced by fashion trends selected by fashion magazines and buyers, called gatekeepers, and promoted by advertisers and visual merchandisers, called promoters.’ (Kim, et al. 2011.) Thus, trends are important to keeping the fashion industry running as all types of fashion professionals are needed.

8

“Fashion forecasting is a creative, continual process used to predict trends of upcoming seasons.” It also involves a systematic procedure of information gathering and conducting and analysing market and consumer research. There are different ways companies can obtain this information such as, researching and interpreting new trends themselves which is because they wish to ‘keep their originality.”’(Jackson, 2001.) However, some brands choose to source this information externally by subscribing to trend forecasting organisations. Its purpose is to allow fashion brands to focus on particular trends to bring forward onto the runway and retail stores, ensuring that they will be more likely to sell successfully due to, the fact that it has been predicted to be on-trend.

Trend forecasting is vital to the success of the fashion industry because it increases the probability of future success as it allows brands to purchase and design the right products that are more likely to sell as they have been forecast as a new trend. Furthermore, as technology progressed, so did trend forecasting such as, the introduction of online forecasting companies who have become greatly important to the fashion industry. “These companies have revolutionised the industry, offering clients forecasting materials in faster and distinctive ways.” (Kim, et al, 2011.) They save professionals a considerable amount of time whilst the online companies can be used to back up what they have found. “Fashion professionals realise that knowing where the market might be heading is obviously a necessary component of staying relevant and on top of the game.” (Demasi, 2004, p.12.) Therefore, trend forecasting is again important to the fashion industry as it gives brands more of a competitive edge. Trend forecasting also has great importance in the way that there is such a great need to “guide the development of continuously evolving products.” (Kim, et al, 2011.) because of the shorter product life cycles and this can not always be spotted or predicted by fashion professionals alone without the guidance of a trend forecasting organisation.

9

The role of the media plays a huge role in the process of forecasting and creating trends as consumers are greatly influenced by what they see on social media. Whether it’s celebrities or bloggers sharing their new favourite trend, consumers immediately begin to fixate on what they own. “Social media dictates trends today. The trend emerges overnight and disappears almost as quickly.” (Worth, 2015.) ‘Social media has absolutely, totally changed the trends landscape.’ (Chappell, 2015.) As social media continues to take over in today’s society, it is more vital than ever in playing its part amongst trend forecasting and the success of a trend. Consumers are obsessed with owning and styling the latest trend therefore, fashion retailers and houses should take advantage of their social media accounts by posting continuously about upcoming trends so that consumers are more likely to buy into this particular movement.

Marketing also has a huge role to play in trend forecasting and whether a trend will be accepted by consumers. This is due to the success of individual advertisements, for example, if an advert is hugely criticised in the media, consumers are less likely to buy into a trend. Therefore, marketing needs to be thoughtfully designed in order to sell an upcoming trends.

10

There are several current issues that are bound to affect the application of trends such as, the social issue regarding conscious consumption; a social movement that revolves around the increased awareness of consumers’ purchasing decisions on the environment. Consumers are beginning to wonder, why is fashion one of the highest polluting industries in the world? With £140m worth of clothing going to landfill every year (Wrap UK), consumers are wanting to help make a difference.

The rise of organisations such as, Fashion Revolution (http://fashionrevolution.org/) who work for the welfare of workers; consumers are beginning to realise the true cost of fashion and this is affecting their buying behaviour. Therefore, this could have a huge impact on the application of trends as consumers are going to want to purchase sustainable fabrics; if a particular process involved in creating a garment is unethical; some consumers are less likely to follow the trend. Also, with ethical websites such as www.wrap.org.uk and their sustainable clothing action plan (SCAP), consumers ethical knowledge has increased and therefore, sales of unethical products have decreased; thus damaging the success of all trends, depending on whether the garments have been produced ethically.

The damaging implication will vary on which high-street retailer, consumers are buying from, as many fashion retailers are known to be unethical such as, Primark. Therefore consumers may not purchase from these stores. Whereas, other retailers who have not been branded as unethical will not suffer as much unless a particular item has been produced unethically which would mean consumers may only buy certain products which would then decrease the demand for products in their stores.

SPRING SUMMER ‘17 TRENDS 13

After looking into the latest trends, I found that the trends that particularly stood out were the 80s, sheer, 3D and yellow. Each of these trends stood out as they could be worn so creatively and altered to the taste of each consumer.

The sheer trend originated way back in AW68 with Saint Laurent’s delicate pieces and had a new take for SS17 which I titled ‘Bare is the New Beautiful’ as it had a strong feminine essence with the delicate fabrics and soft pastel tones. This also affected the makeup industry with bare, natural make up being on-trend for this season.

The 3D trend originally started from the Commes Des Garcons collection ‘Lumps and Bumps’ for SS97 and designer Iris Van Herpen also has a heavy focus on sculptural fashion throughout her many collections. Commes Des Garcons portrayed this trend yet again in the SS17 collection which was then interpreted by fashion retailers with huge statement sleeves and puffa jackets, enhancing the silhouette in sculptural forms.

Regarding the yellow trend, this was featured particularly in runway shows by designers Chloe, Versace, Tibi and Roksanda. This trend has significant flexibility with the several different shades you can style such as, canary yellow being the most prominent for SS17. This colour trend also influenced the entertainment industry with 2017 films focusing on the colour such as, La LaLand and Beauty and the Beast. High street retailers caught onto this trend almost immediately with Zara creating a #yellow page on their website to allow consumers to follow the trend easily and purchase key fashion pieces.

After working on all four trends, I decided to focus my trend report on the 80s as this stood out visually and the concept of its history was so captivating to research. The 80s is such a broad trend to look at so I decided to look specifically at the use of bright colours in formal wear; it is such a huge characteristic of the 80s style and allowed me to create continuity and focus within my work.

Each trend always has reasoning for it becoming the ‘big thing’, whether it be because the colour palette compliments the time of year, or whether it is reminiscing on an old fashion trend and creating a new take on it; which is what has been done with the 80s.

The 80s allows a lot of freedom of expression due to, the bold silhouettes and dramatic colours, thus becoming an easy trend for consumers to experiment with. Every time the 80s becomes a trend for a particular fashion season, it is taken from a new perspective; meaning consumers don’t find the trend repetitive.

When the 80s became a trend for AW15, it significantly focused on gold lame, power shoulders and velvet. The big designers supporting this trend for AW15 were Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, and Rodarte. Whereas, SS17 is more focused on the colour palette with eye catching metallics and fuschia pink becoming exceedingly popular as well as, patent leather materials and other bright colours.

Therefore, I believe this trend has made a huge return for SS17 due to its creativity with colour and bold statement materials that allow consumers freedom in creating their own style whilst remaining on-trend. Also, the fact that it has such a historical reference to an era of such dramatic fashion pieces that consumers always love to see revived.

17

There is such a huge influence causing this trend to spread, especially celebrity style. With celebrity influence being so huge in our society, it is one of the most effective forces. With stars sporting the 80s trend on the red carpet such as, Rita Ora and Heidi Klum and Gigi and Bella Hadid sporting it for runway shows as well as, day-to-day wear. Also, Olivia Wilde whom tackled the formal side of the 80s with power dressing.

Trend reports and fashion-orientated websites have also had a huge influence on the movement of this trend. There have been articles flooding magazines and websites such as, Vogue. The 80s is being mentioned everywhere; emphasising that it is the must-have trend for SS17. In today’s society many consumers listen and buy into what they are told is the ‘greatest’. Therefore, articles similar to this are going to be enforcing the trend largely in our competitive society.

19

Several high street retailers are stocking this SS17 trend; making it easily accessible. When exploring the retail stores in Nottingham I found the trend especially prominent in Topshop, River Island and Urban Outfitters with bright colours and metallic statement pieces. Firstly, I found that River Island were mainly stocking bright coloured pieces and also formalwear. They are selling two blazers in black and white that link back to the style of the 80s with bunched up sleeves and a slightly oversized look. I then got inspiration from these and purchased a similar blazer for the shoot in order to master this look.

20

When looking in Topshop, I also found several bright pieces but in different colours such as, Fuschia Pink which ended up featuring in our styling shoot. Also, this demonstrates the way the 80s trend has evolved for SS17 as fuschia pink is one of the staple colours. Topshop are also selling a mustard yellow shoulder bag that I then focused on using for the shoot.

Finally, I found some 80s clothing in Urban Outfitters. They had several metallic tops and cami dresses.

Name: Lucy Age: 18 80s Item: Yellow Suede Jacket, Zara Loves the Trend Because: “I love that it has brought all these bright colours into stores, it’s my favourite time of year because my wardrobe automatically brightens and the 80s completely stands for all that.”

STYLING SHOOT

Styling Shoot Outfit Inspiration

26

Styling Shoot Location Inspiration

27

The styling shoot was a real learning experience, thinking about the concept behind the shoot, putting together the right outfits and choosing the right location to ensure the shoot went smoothly whilst getting powerful photos that work well together to tell a story. As previously mentioned, I focused on the bright colours of the trend which would inevitably add a focal point to the images thus, creating the title ‘The Bright 80s’ for the styling shoot. The shoot revolved around formalwear inspired by the historical reference of the 80s fashion period incorporated with a striking colour palette. I decided to focus on this part of the trend because there are several different looks within the 80s trend such as, neon lycra sportswear and I felt that this trend had been interpreted as bright glamour for SS17. I came to this decision based upon primary research in high street stores and looking at Nottingham’s street style and this allowed me to narrow down from such a broad trend and create continuity within the photoshoot.

28

Due to the characteristics of the 80s trend; it is more likely to be marketed towards a younger demographic; from 17-26 years of age (approximately). Therefore, the models used would be of a similar age range in order to connect with consumers and make the marketing relatable. Shoots and marketing of this trend would have to have a playful feel in order to attract and retain the attention of the younger consumers in order for them to buy into the trend. A younger consumer target would make it more likely to be successful as younger consumers tend to be more fashion forward therefore, are more likely to be keeping up with trends.

FASHION EDITORIAL

31

I have created a fashion editorial of how the 80s trend would be marketed in fashion publications. I have chosen to write for AnOther Magazine as I felt it was a likely publication for this trend to be marketed in. AnOther magazine is an online magazine focusing on cultured fashion, beauty and lifestyle. They focus on either promoting products and talking to style icons that their consumers can relate to. Their target consumer tends to be young, approximately between 18-26 years old and extremely fashion-forward.

CONCLUSION

39

This project can teach that trends are not only influenced and created through fashion related factors but also social, economic and global issues too. It is something that is not commonly known but found through further reading. These issues can include global wars and economic issues as particular garments can be made using either more or less fabric depending on the circumstances. For example, during wealthy periods garments tend to be more extravagant and use excessive material. Social factors can have a huge influence on trends such as, the ‘health and wellness’ trend that has influenced the rise of activewear being worn as everyday clothing because of consumers’ focus on appearance over reality. Research from this report can also help you to understand the life-cycle of trends for example, it can teach the difference between a ‘fad’ or classic fashions that recur and always remain on-trend. Furthermore, this project can give an understanding knowledge of some of the SS17 trends. It can be surprising learning how history can influence a trend. Regarding the revival of the 80s, each time the trend reappears on the high street and on the catwalks it has somewhat developed in comparison to the last time it was on-trend. For example, for SS17 the trend features more focus on bold colours and formal wear, whereas in the past the return of the 80s has focused on other characteristics such as, huge shoulder pads in AW15.

The social media exposure for this trend has been massively significant in keeping this trend alive for SS17. It has been published on several fashion and trend websites such as, Vogue, i-D and WGSN. The creation of these articles leads to a mass viewing that then spreads the trend further, especially when consumers are viewing it from high profile organisations like Vogue; they are going to trust their credited opinion on upcoming trends. It is clear that the return of the 80s has featured in SS17 trend articles much more frequently than other trends; already highlighting how this trend is in serious demand. High street retailers picked up on this trend immediately, with stores such as, Zara and Topshop stocking bright coloured formal pieces such as, tailored trousers and blazers in order to satisfy demand. Therefore, it is clear that the revival of the 80s yet again has been a huge success in the fashion industry with constant sales being made on vibrant coloured pieces and metallic garments.

The trend system keeps products in high demand as in today’s materialistic society, consumers strive to have the most fashionable products in order to appear a certain way. Therefore, the trend system will always survive because consumers buy into what they are told is the latest ‘must-have’. However, trends will change massively with the rise of the ethical consumer. It is largely possible that mass retailers will begin to introduce ethical collections in order to satisfy the needs and wants of ethics influenced consumers. Many consumers are more selective with their buying behaviour as they do not wish to associate themselves with harmful brands, this could be significantly detrimental to high street retailers and they will need to make changes in order to maintain and improve their consumer base.
