Green antifoul solution

The masterminds behind a sea-urchin inspired, eco-friendly antifouling solution for boats have teamed up with Falmouth Harbour and Rustler Yachts to bring the technology to Cornwall in an industry fi rst.

Finsulate’s ‘bio-wrap’ is being trialled on the hulls of Falmouth fast patrol vessel Killigrew and launch Arwenack – with potential for rolling out this prickly antifoul across the bottoms of the Harbour authority’s entire fl eet.

It is the latest initiative in a 150th anniversary pledge to be cleaner and greener which has made Falmouth Harbour ‘Environmental Growth’ winners in the Cornwall Sustainability Awards.

Other recent initiatives include extra protection for harbour seagrass beds and a blackwater pumping facility which removes on board effl uent from vessels’ holding tanks, along with a litterskimming Seabin.

Bamba McDonald, Rustler commercial manager, said: “The current make up of antifouling products as we know it will be phased out at some point and viable eco-friendly alternatives will be introduced to the market place. So, it is great to be working with Finsulate UK and Falmouth Harbour on this exciting and effective solution.” www.falmouthharbour.co.uk www.fi nsulate.co.uk www.rustleryachts.com

New MDL berthing options

From MDL Marinas comes two new berthing products which will enhance boat owners’ on water experience, opening up cruising opportunities and exploration around the UK coast and further afi eld. Maximising the appeal of an extensive network of beautiful marina locations, here and aboard, MDL’s Platinum Plus Otium berthing package and new Cruising Bundles offer boat owners increased fl exibility to cruise between many stunning destinations, with options that can be tailored to suit their individual style of boating.

The Platinum Plus Otium berthing package offers a comprehensive range of boating benefi ts. While enjoying Platinum berthing, boat owners receive complimentary overnight stays at MDL’s 18 UK marinas as well as access to 140 marinas in France, Spain and Portugal. Plus with Otium, MDL’s loyalty scheme which comes as standard with all berthing packages, Platinum berth holders will receive fi ve per cent of their berthing fee back in loyalty points. Otium berth holders can also now use their points to join the gym and spa at the Southampton Harbour Hotel or MDL Fitness at Queen Anne’s Battery Marina in Plymouth. Other benefi ts of Platinum berthing include eight weeks storage ashore at MDL boatyards, points on fuel and boatyard services.

MDL Marinas has also introduced cruising bundles, created to support those who wish to venture further afi eld and make the most of their time on the water. MDL berth holders and visitors with Otium can now use their loyalty points on a selection of cruising bundles, offering overnight stays in up to 160 marinas across the UK and Europe. There are three cruising bundles to choose from. Find out more at www.mdlmarinas. co.uk/cruising-bundles. ww.mdlmarinas.co.uk The £75m redevelopment at Noss on Dart Marina has reached several milestones in the last year and now one of the most signifi cant green infrastructure components has been installed.

Central to the new boatyard facilities is a boat wash-down water recycling system which demonstrates Premier Marinas’ commitment to investing in the latest environmentally friendly equipment and developing sustainability best practices.

Designed and manufactured in the UK by FiltaBund, specialists in wash water collection and processing equipment for the marine industry, it is a closed loop system meaning all debris and water run-off is collected, fi ltered through a three stage fi ltration system and recycled when a boat is lifted out for a high-pressure wash.

This water is then stored in a holding tank ready to be recycled and used again for the next wash down. This ensures that no chemicals end up in, at Noss on Dart, the River Dart.

Premier has also commissioned FiltaBund to retrofi t the wash down system at Chichester Marina.

Premier has a long-term plan to install this new equipment across all of its sites where waste water is not routed into the main sewer system. www.premiermarinas.com

Around the marinas...

Premier Marinas has announced that following a three year monitoring programme of its marinas, a fi nal audit of its fl agship Swanwick Marina, as well as a review of its overall marina group processes, they have been awarded with recertifi cation of ISO 14001:2015 for a further three years.

A public consultation on the latest plans for a new wave screen at a new marina at the Port of Dover closed on 22 January. The marina is lying empty after port offi cials deemed the waters too choppy to moor boats.

A luxury yacht went up in fl ames last month at Ocean Marina in Pattaya, Thailand. No one was injured in the incident, which is under investigation although an electrical issue has been suggested as the cause.

Berth holders at Milford Marina got into the Christmas spirit by taking part in the annual Christmas boat dressing competition. Iris B 2 was the latest winner, complete with fully lit Christmas tree, infl atable Santa and topped off with a star. began in the winter of 2020/21 and now an all-new, 232-berth facility is all but complete. Over the winter of 2021/22, Walcon will add the remaining pontoons and complete the supply and installation of a new bridgehead and a fuel pontoon.

GCMarine is to design, supply and install a full turn-key superyacht marina for Fiji Nawi Island off the fast-developing tourist hotspot of Savusavu. The 130-berth marina, which will be constructed on the Gold Coast then transported to Fiji, has been designed to handle a Category 5 Cyclone.

Two superyachts were destroyyed after a fi re at Hinckley Yacht Services Marina in Rhode Island, USA. The 30m Drinkability was reportedly being repaired when the fi re began, and the fl ames spread to the nearby 32m Danneskjold.

After a comprehensive rebuild over the past two years the entire freehold of the Isle of Wight’s Totland Pier - cafe, pier, moorings - is being offered for sale.

THE CHANGING FACE OF MARINAS

This month we are in the popular South Coast boating spot of Portsmouth at Gunwharf Quays Marina to discover how a focus on their guests’ experience has led to a record number of visitors.

The last two years have been interesting to say the least. The events beginning in March 2020 are well documented and the range of emotions experienced have varied right across the spectrum for both marina operators and their customers.

Gunwharf Quays Marina, at the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour, operates on a slightly different model to the traditional marina in that it has a greater reliance on visiting guests to make its money as opposed to the more familiar line of income that the larger marinas rely on from their annual contracted residents.

With that in mind the words ‘close the doors and stay at home until further notice’ has a potentially greater level of anxiety around it when your job description is to attract and welcome visiting guests.

During the first lockdown the marina’s focus turned to what they could do differently when they re-opened. Some of the questions they asked included: who are we going to be welcoming when we come back? How long will they be able to visit for? Will we see our international guests this summer? Will anyone even want to visit a marina attached to a busy shopping centre and potentially crowded spaces?

The short answer turned out to be yes, everyone wanted to come back, albeit slowly at first, and from all directions including from abroad. They were back in the game.

THE HUMAN TOUCH One of the delights of running a marina on the smaller size is the ability to focus on the customer service element, and the team made a conscious decision to focus all their energy on how to make everyone feel welcome after four months of a life of the exact opposite.

They looked at their two key areas of guest interaction. The first touch point being booking a berth and the second the arrival and ongoing experience throughout the visit.

Gunwharf Quays Marina are firm believers in the human touch and, whilst we live in a digital world, the team knew from talking to guests that speaking to a human over the phone and being greeted by one on arrival has immense value.

Although the marina features on a number of berth booking apps, the majority of UK boat owners still prefer to call, email or click the ‘book a berth’ button on the website.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE With just two full-time staff members there were occasions on busy summer days where welcoming a guest in person became the priority over answering the phone.

To improve that first point of contact they brought in additional seasonal staffing from their existing experienced retail guest services team. Answering the phone quicker improved the initial experience, giving first time guests a greater confidence in the level of service they would get on arrival.

The ‘on berth’ experience of being greeted in person was already a popular feature with regular guests, but an even more impressive experience for first time guests. In fact, the most repeated sentence they hear all season is “we have never been welcomed on to a berth in any other marina before”.

In order to expand this experience they extended the office opening hours into the early evening so that those arriving when the remaining berth locations were a little more tricky to access still received that confidence boosting personal welcome.

The final piece in the jigsaw was how to take care of customers arriving out of hours. Many of us use WhatsApp to message friends and family and this platform is the perfect way to send pictures and information.

Pre-pandemic the team would describe a berth over the phone and ask people to write down gate codes, which all required work from them, and then work by the guest to note it all down.

Now they use WhatsApp to communicate, with images of the marina, berth location and any other information a guest may need to enjoy their stay when the team are not around to welcome them. rapidly growing market of superyacht clients. The pandemic and the rapidly changeable travel restrictions saw unprecedented demand for superyacht berthing in the UK for both UK owners and vessels with UK based crew, happy to freely come ashore in their home country.

With the marina’s deep water

location and three superyacht capable berths of 50m+ in length, Gunwharf Quays Marina was in the perfect position to accommodate this unprecedented demand. The same welcoming ethos was applied to captains, agents and crew and saw them secure a record 11 superyachts in 2021 and repeat bookings for 2022.

So that was the changing face of Gunwharf Quays in 2020-21. Record numbers of guests thanks to a human touch and a warm welcome to every one of their guests. #everyoneswelcome at www.gunwharf-quays.com
