CELEBRATING GOLD
Thanks to a £1.5million investment in Scotland’s most accessible West Coast marina, together with a great team effort, Troon Yacht Haven has been awarded the highly acclaimed 5 Gold Anchors award in The Yacht Harbour Association’s world-renowned marina quality assurance scheme.
Stephen Bennie, director at Troon, said: “We are delighted and extremely proud of our prestigious award. Thanks to signifi cant investment and extensive work from the team – who have carried on quietly and professionally with no inconvenience to customers – our marina now refl ects Troon Yacht Haven’s commitment to excellence.”
Achieving 5 Gold Anchors is no mean feat, with an independent assessor undertaking a rigorous audit: reviewing procedures, assessing customer feedback, mystery shopping and scoring the marina’s facilities.
One of the nine European locations for Yacht Havens Group, this Ayrshire marina has made huge strides in recent years. Securing a substantial investment, Troon has embraced the needs of the 21st century boat enthusiast, upgrading and improving every aspect of the Troon Yacht Haven experience. www.yachthavens.com

DRIVING INNOVATION
Electric charging specialist Aqua superPower has joined the line-up of eco exhibitors at the Green Tech Boat Show, which is returning to MDL’s Queen Anne’s Battery Marina from 16 – 18 June.
Following its attendance at last year’s event, Aqua superPower partnered with MDL Marinas to install electric boat chargers at fi ve of MDL’s marinas.
Returning for 2022, Aqua superPower will be showcasing its dockside charging infrastructure created at Plymouth Sound through the MeLL project.
Part of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition launched in March 2021, the MeLL project is funded by the Department for Transport and delivered in partnership with Innovate UK. Aqua superPower is the technology partner for the project, which is led by fellow Green Tech Boat Show exhibitor, the University of Plymouth in partnership with Plymouth City Council.
Plymouth is to install Aqua superPower’s fast chargers for its expanding fl eet of electric vessels, including the UK’s fi rst marine electric passenger ferry and an electric water taxi.
“Last year’s Green Tech Boat Show was a high-quality event and very relevant to Aqua as we were just launching our network,” said Alex Bamberg, CEO of Aqua superPower.
“We consider MDL and the Green Tech Boat Show to be the best platform and educational event in this sector and as a proactive player in the market, it is important for us to participate in the show to demonstrate our marine fast charge network and its benefi ts.
Aqua superPower is just one of the Green Tech Boat Show’s sustainable boating brands and marine businesses that will be presenting their products to boat owners wishing to make the switch to greener options, and prospective owners who would like to start their boating journey in the most environmentally-friendly way possible.
Visitor attendance to the show is free. Tickets can be booked via the Green Tech Boat Show page at: www.mdlmarinas.co.uk/gtbs A new marine academy that aims to close the skills gap and meet the demands of a changing marine and maritime sector has offi cially opened on the banks of the River Dart.
The South Devon College Marine Academy is based on a historic former boat building yard, within Premier Marinas’ £75 million Noss-on-Dart development, and will offer state-ofthe-art facilities to all its students.
The new South Devon College Marine Academy has been 10 years in the planning and became a reality when Premier Marinas acquired the site and supported the development of the specialist training facility. Marine courses span Further Education, Apprenticeships, Short Courses and Degree Level Study with students aged from 14.
“The curriculum is designed to be accessed by all, inclusive of age and importantly to meet the needs of industry, increasing employability and progression opportunities,” said Steve Caunter, South Devon College Assistant Principal, senior leader with strategic responsibility for the Hi Tech, Digital and Professional curriculum.
Around the marinas...

THE CHANGING FACE OF MARINAS
Comparing today’s crystal-clear full colour shots with the sepia toned aerial images of the 1970s it is hard to imagine they are the same marina, separated by half a century. So much has changed at Hampshire’s Lymington Yacht Haven and for the Yacht Havens Group as they celebrate their fi rst 50 years.

ASafe Haven - derived from the Dutch word ‘jachthaven’ meaning “safe haven for yachts”, their fi rst marina, Lymington Yacht Haven opened for business in May 1972, with annual berthing available at £6.25 per foot. 12 years after plans were fi rst conceived by a group of local yachtsmen, including Dutch dredging contractor Hems Kalis, with one shared vision: to build a marina.
In the early days, when money was tight, Hems provided a personal guarantee to pay Westminster Dredging Company for the design and build of the marina. Once works started, Lymington Yacht Haven proceeded to sell a number of 20-year berthing contracts, raising £600,000 which paid for marina construction works in full.
There were only a few UK yacht marinas in the 1960s and most boats were kept afl oat on river moorings close to a yacht club with basic facilities.
The Yacht Havens Group managing director Dylan Kalis explains: “Boat owners were obliged to park either at or near their local yacht club and row out to their boat on its mooring. The concept of being able to walk down a pontoon and step on to the boat directly was a huge novelty. Cynics said it would never catch on!”
Refl ecting on those early days, Yacht Havens Group chairman Dirk Kalis added: “Walk-on pontoons extended many customers’ boating activities by a good decade.” Then and now In the early days the 200ft vessel Medina served as the temporary marina offi ce with any servicing or maintenance undertaken in the workshop barge Actief, until 1977 when construction began on the main offi ce building.
By the late 1980s Yacht Havens Group were well established, involved in building and operating a number of marina projects around the UK including Largs, Swansea, Hartlepool and Pwllheli.
Fast forward to 2022 and the group now successfully operates from nine locations: Lymington, Plymouth, North Fambridge, Neyland, Troon and Largs in the UK and Jachthaven Biesbosch in the Netherlands. People at the heart of Yacht Havens Group One thing that has remained a constant throughout those 50 years has been the Group’s commitment to providing a fi rst-class service.
To consistently deliver on that commitment across all nine marinas has meant pin-pointing a winning formula, and that is their people. In every one of their marinas you will fi nd a friendly, knowledgeable, service-orientated group of individuals, proud to don their Yacht Haven uniform, keen to serve their boating communities; from responding to berth holders’ enquiries to checking and taking in lines.
Berth holder Chris explains: “With a youngish family we are relatively new to sailing, so we radio ahead when we are coming into the marina and there is always someone there to take in our lines. Nobody sits on their laurels at the Yacht Haven, they do not just provide a service, there are always signs of improvement, from upgrading pontoons to the car park entry system, fabulous shower block and furniture in the restaurant. They are consistently investing in the latest technology to make life easier for berth holders.”
Expansion of Lymington Yacht Haven has also been impressive - now housing over 600 berths (originally 400), parking for 350 cars, ancillary buildings, hard standing for 230 boats, EV charging and a popular bar/restaurant.
For boating enthusiasts Home to colourful characters and talented sailors, the marina has celebrated many outstanding sailing achievements over the years. For example, welcoming the late Les Powles

and his beloved 34ft Solitaire in 1981, after 47 weeks, 329 days and 28,496 miles at sea. He remained a regular and popular face at the Yacht Haven.
A sense of community has always been as important to the Group as it is to berth holders.
Chris explains: “It is more than a place to park my boat, we enjoy family cruising, racing and getting out for local Solent adventures. We have made friends with our berth neighbours, and I often go and sit on the boat for coffee, it is such a lovely place to be.”
MD Dylan Kalis concludes: “We are proud of our association with the yachting fraternity around the UK and will continue to offer our customers a safe and friendly place to keep their boats. It is thanks to the vision, drive and persistence of the original shareholders that Lymington Yacht Haven was built, and we remain indebted to our many loyal customers who have chosen to berth their boats with us since 1972.”
