TAME IMPALA CABIN Spring 2017 - ENV 102 Our objective is to design a cabin for a writer to escape their regular life so they can work on their projects and pick a song of our choice to gain inspiration for the design. I chose the psychedelic interlude Nangs by Tame Impala. The program requires only a sleeping space (400 sq. ft.) and a living space (250 sq. ft.). No electricity or running water, as the resident is forced to embrace nature. The location is in a Pine Forest, as the cabin faces southwest on a mountain. The design has modern and parametric accents to mimic the fluidity of the album cover. Entry and Balcony depicts the repetitive opening of the song, while stairs emulates the heavy drums. The parametric ceiling represents the delicate piano throughout the song.

SUN FLAG DESIGN Spring 2017 - ENV 102 The objective is to design a flag that represents you. I chose a very linear layout that represents my style and sunset colors to represent my middle name, Tonatiuh, which means God of Sun in Aztec. The flag also has 2 subliminal L’s to signify I have 2 L’s in my first name, since everyone thinks I have 1. Then, I had to make an interpreted 3d model based of the flag. I made the transition from 2d to 3d easier by discovering similar designs I can see within both aspects. Both, the flag and the outline cube had L’s, squares, and the shape of the white background of the flag. I layered the interpretations, by making the flag shape the base to look familiar, then positioned the 2 squares floating between the L’s and the base to hug it all together.

BIG BRO / LITTLE BRO Fall 2017 - ARC 201 This project explored the relationship of 2 sets of relating shapes. First, I had to draw 2 linear lines and 2 horizontal lines anywhere on the grid. Then fill in the space and replicate that shape with a bigger version. After I had a 2 shapes relation, I decide to rotate the smaller brother 90 degrees to have the final form. I explored how to manipulate and modify the relationship in 3d. The black spaces were repurposed as holes, but left a gap in between them. The red rectangles I saw as opportunities to raise and lower them. The bigger rectangle sinks one layer, while the smaller red rectangle is raised a level. Then included three walls that wrap around the black rectangles. I raised and lowered one and cut off where they intersect to give off a more aggressive intersection.

The bridge is the highest point due to depicting my first name. The bridge is positioned on top of the pond to add hierarchy and weightlessness.

CASE STUDY 17 STUDY MODEL Fall 2017 - ARC 201 I had to dissect the Case Study 17 house from 1956 by Craig Ellwood and make a study model. I noticed how Ellwood designed the hallways that enclose the most used and private spaces to give a more spacious and airy feel. To represent that idea I stretched those spaces, pulling through the roof and floor of the model so it’s easily visible. No matter where you look at the model, you can tell exactly where these rooms are. The original house idolized privacy. The front of the house has no windows, while the backside is completely open. So, I wrapped the model with a thin band to represent that ideology. It only hugs around the front half of the house. The back is almost completely visible. This design transitions to my next project, the KMHRP Visitor Center.

KMHRP VISITOR CENTER Fall 2017 - ARC 201 The KMHRP Visitor Center follows the same language the Case Study 17 house had. The building is tailored for kid field trips to learn about and experience the Machado Lake. The building has long extended hallways that wrap around high-circulated areas. The Visitor Center also carries the distinctive U shape the house had, but adds to it by having the private area stick out of the U shape. Courtyards are accessible from any of the long planes for the kids or adults to play or rest in. The main courtyard is enclosed by the U shape for privacy. The materials of the Center are also found within the Case Study House, but with a twist. The Brick, Frosted Glass, and Wood all are see through in some parts, to seem more inviting and open for the public.
