A MAN OF MANY FACES.

Movie Star John Rhys-Davies

BUYS AN ALLANTE

Earlier this fall I put a beautiful Pearl Red 93 Allante on eBay. The car had only 46,000 miles and was a real “Cream Puff ”. I had it on the auction format and as usual was seeing some nice activity on the bidding. I was also getting quite a few calls on the car. Especially from a fellow in Las Vegas who really wanted the car. He called almost every day the car was up on the eBay auction to tell me he was the high bidder that day and he was going to get that car. He was the high bidder the entire last day, until at the last minute when a bid came in and took the car away from the Las 4

Vegas bidder. A few minutes later I received a call from a gentleman with a distinct English accent. He introduced himself as John Rhys-Davies and said he had just purchased my car on eBay. I talk to a lot of people every day and his name did sound a little familiar. I asked if he was a member of the Allante Club or a previous customer of my Allante parts business. He said, “No, but you might know me from the movies.” He asked me, “Did you see any of the Raiders of the Lost Ark movies with Harrison Ford or The Lord of the Ring Trilogies?”

Come to find out John has over 245 credits to his name. Some of his other works include King Richard in “Robin of Sherwood”, General Leonid Pushkin in the James Bond film “The Living Daylights”. He also starred in the 1980’s TV miniseries “Shogun”. One of his biggest credits is his role as the dwarf Gimli in “The Lord of the Rings Trilogies”. Some of his television success has been with the 1993 series The Untouchables” as Agent Michael Malone and “Star Trek”. John grew up in Salisbury, England only nine miles from

“Stonehenge” the iconic prehistoric ring of stones. Salisbury is the home of the famous 13th century Cathedral and has an original copy of the Magna Carta from 1215. Salisbury is only 35 miles from Portsmouth on the south coast of England. John is now on set in Oklahoma staring in a film called ”Starbright”. John is one of the leading actors in this new production. The story is about a young orphan who escapes realities of her life by fantasizing and entering a fairy tale world. John plays the Angel “Raphael” he told me. John and I immediately hit it off in his first contact with me after being the high bidder on the Allante. He of course wanted to know everything possible about the car. The one thing he told me that stands out to me was his appreciation of the styling and value of the car. He loved the fact that the car was designed and built in Europe, with the power and dependability of a Cadillac drive train. He thought it would be a great convertible to cruise around in “in the States”. John made arrangements to fly to San Diego where I picked him up at the airport. We spent the better part of the afternoon at the Allante Store where I showed him everything I could about the Allante. I also showed him how to operate his new car. How to put the top up and down, adjust the climate control, door locks and window switches, and all the typical questions a new Allante owner has. When he left San Diego he headed to Big Bear California to meet with a friend. The next day he was off to Hollywood to meet with his agent, Jeff Goldberg. From there he was on a cruise of the western part of the United States to end up in Oklahoma where he was back on set to finish his new film, hopefully before Christmas.

A TWEAK HERE & THERE 6

INSIDER VOL 4 • 2016

BY STEVE GARRITY

Being a former hot rodder and car builder, I’m not afraid of making some enhancements to my Allantés, so here are a few of my personal “Tweaks”. As we all know our Allantés are fine automobiles, BUT a few modifications are in order to improve upon perfection. Since traveling over 80,000 miles, I have found a few things which needed to have a little fine-tuning. The first of my adaptations, the Fuel & Trunk button location. I’m an avid tea drinker, so I always have something in my add-on cup holder. It became a real hassle, real quick when I had to lift the armrest, remove the cup holder, then open the compartment containing the buttons, push the appreciate button and reverse the entire process. I knew there had to be a better, simpler way to mount these buttons in a new, more convenient location. As you know, there is no power outlet, except for the cigarette lighter, which is a hassle to get to. Solution, install an outlet under the dash, near the firewall on the left side of the console. A gang power outlet was purchased, which can accommodate the GPS, phone charger and a DC to AC converter for the laptop computer, used on Road Trip 65. The fuse block was pulled and using the proper connector I spliced into one of the 20 AMP fusses. GPS location. A five inch Garmin is used, which sits very nicely in the cavity to the left of the instrument cluster. Not wanting to drill any holes, a bean bag was a great choice. Velcro was attached to the bag and to the back of the GPS, this allows for adjusting the angle as the light changes with the top down. Next, the turn signal indicator light, which can’t be seen and has been left blinking on more than one occasion. Using twin lead speaker wire, of which one has a line and the other does not, one lead was attached to the right rear turn signal wire and one to the left. Then the lead was ran from the trunk, through the center Pullquote here

}

console to the dash. This also requires the removal of the instrument cluster. Between the cluster and the DIC there is approximately a half inch, at the very top, I drilled two 3/16 inch holes for the LED lights. Now when my turn signals are blinking I have a way of knowing they are on, they also come on when the brake is applied. Since the air bag was added, the light switches can no longer be seen. Personally, I always run with my fog lights on for safety, but the button can’t be seen. Answer, go to the hardware, and pick up what they call, bumpers. These are like the little adhesive buttons on the bottom of a jewelry box. Merely attach one of the small bumpers to the fog light button and now you just run your finger over the button panel until you feel the raised bumper, then push and your fog lights are on. Windscreen – if you enjoy working on your Allante this is something you can do yourself for well under a $100 bucks, if you don’t mind going on a treasure hunt at your local auto salvage yard. I’ll follow up in a later issue of the INSIDER on the parts needed and the how-to. A simple overview was given on the “Tweaks” if you have questions on how to do any or all of these, please feel free to email me, we’ll exchange phone numbers and I will be happy to answer any of your questions. KEEP-M SHINY and ROLLIN’!

ALLANTE CAR CLUB - XLR CHAPTER OF THE C&LC PICTURE #1

What's Behind the Fuel Filler Door

PICTURE #2

EMERGENCY FUEL DOOR RELEASE You’re cruising along in your Allanté with the top down on a beautiful day. You notice that you are getting quite a bit low on gas so you swing into the next gas station. You press the button in the center console and the fuel door does not open! That can be a real problem if you can’t refuel. Luckily Cadillac in their infinite wisdom has allowed for just such an emergency. If the button does not activate the solenoid to open the door there is a method that it can be manually opened but only if you know how to find it. The button that opens the fuel door may not operate for a number of reasons. Since it’s electrically operated assuming you have power it could be a blown fuse, a broken wire or a bad solenoid. In any event if it does not work we need to figure out how to open it. The service manual says “To manually operate the door in case of emergency, remove the left rear quarter trim panel and lift upward on the solenoid lever” Since most of us don’t carry the service manual along with us it’s good to know this information in advance but what does it mean?

What is the left rear quarter trim and where is the solenoid lever? The left rear quarter trim panel is the side carpeted panel just behind the driver’s seat. If your familiar with accessing the battery it’s the same panel but on the driver’s side. This panel is secured with clips and slides in and out on a track. Slide the panel toward the front of the car loosening the clips as you go. This will remove it. Once this panel is removed you see a black vinyl moisture shield. This shield protects the electronic box that operates the air bag system in the car. Just above where the shield attaches you can see a white lever sticking up. This is the manual release for the fuel door. You just see the tip of it in the following picture. (see picture #1) In the next picture I have removed the electronic box to get a better view of the solenoid. (see picture #2). You won’t need to do that. You can see my finger operating the lever to release the fuel door. Once this is done the fuel door will open and you can get the fuel you need.

ALLANTE CAR CLUB XLR CHAPTER OF THE C&LC

Allanté-XLR Director Message BY TERRY BRESSLER TERRY@SPECIALSALESUSA.COM On October 22, 2016 the Allanté-XLR community lost a true friend. Bob Klopfer, Director of the Allanté-XLR Chapter of the C. & L. C., died at the age of 80. Bob’s energy was critical to the perpetuation of the Chapter and to the recognition of these great roadsters. Bob had lots of help in the beginning from a bunch of old timers such as Vic Yingst, Mark Dahl, Ken Kogge and all the current Club Presidents, along with a host of others that I am too young to remember. He never stopped trying to continue to carry the banner further nor lift it higher. Bob always wanted to get another group going and to his last days advised me what we needed to do to make our Chapter even better. Bob cared; He cared about the cars, Allantés

and XLR’s; Bob cared about his friends and family; and Bob cared about his members. Nobody ever worked harder to get Chapter Status from the Cadillac & LaSalle Club for his Chicagoland Group. He was proud because he truly believed that cars as good as the Allanté and the XLR deserved the recognition of the National Organization representing the Cadillac Nameplate. One of Bob’s proudest moments came when I recently had the pleasure of advising him that his Allanté-XLR Chapter of the Cadillac & LaSalle Club had succeeded in obtaining Host Chapter Status for the 2019 Grand National Event. That event will be Held in Lincolnshire, Illinois, in June of 2019 and will be his final trophy. Bob strived to not only build a great Chapter he strived to gain the loyalty of his members which he surely gained. We will miss him.

ALLANTÉ ADVICE TIP

Glove Box Not Opening?

Is your glove box door reluctant to open no matter how hard you pull on it? It is a fairly common symptom that may not be a problem at all! The situation is that there is not enough “throw” on the release button to unlatch the catch. That is, the rectangular release button contacts the glove box door before the catch clears its release point. The situation is worsened by the fact that you are pulling back on the cover expecting it to open. This creates a sort of “Chinese Handcuff” scenario wherein the harder you pull, the tighter it holds since you are reducing the available “throw” distance. Sometimes just changing the way you open the glove box is sufficient. Instead of pulling back on the door as you cycle the release lever, push the door forward with either the hand you are using or your free hand. Then cycle the release lever by “squeezing” it rather than exerting rearward pressure. While holding the release lever, release the forward pressure, and the door should open. In severe cases the release lever needs to be “shaved” off slightly to provide more clearance. Whatever you do, don’t keep pulling on it, since the extra pressure doesn’t help. INSIDER VOL 4 • 2016

ATLANTA ALLANTE CAR CLUB

BY PAULA VOPELAK

WOO HOO! ALLANTE’ ATLANTA CAR CLUB’S FALL CRUISE

Friday, October 14th was an early morning for a lot of Allante’s and one BIG Cadillac from our friends of the Cadillac LaSalle Peach State Region. Initially three other Big Caddys were scheduled to join our “Driving the Green-Eyed Snake Cruise” but due to mechanical, last minute schedule changes, etc., could not make the trip. We gathered at McDonalds for a quick coffee, our drivers’ meeting with maps, route discussion and first rest stop. Off we went, traveling through Clayton, GA to Asheville, NC where we picked up the Blue Ridge Parkway for 100 miles of twisty, steep inclines, BEAUTIFUL scenery and surprisingly little traffic. At our mid-point drive we stopped at our favorite place in the mountains, the Switzerland Inn and Restaurant for a very hearty luncheon and two hour rest and picture-taking from the top of a mountain. We were joined by three other Allante’s from SC and FL. So off the twelve Allantés and one BIG Cadillac headed for Boone, NC and the “Green-Eyed Snake”. Friday evening, we gathered in our hospitality room at the Fairfield Inn and Suites for beverages (cosmos), wine and some other liquid refreshments and a fun pizza party delivered hot and tasty with large and delicious salads. We had a few more libations after pizza then had some serious discussions about the Allanté, our clubs, events and future. But that summary is for another later article. Saturday, October 15th dawned sunny and just the right temperature of 62 degrees for the Allante’s to start the drive to the Green-Eyed Snake route. After our drivers meeting, map discussion and detailed route, we departed for NC 105 and NC 194 to VA 58 and Damascus, VA. We experienced three lost drivers (due to turning right instead of left and following someone else) but we all made the drive safely and ended up at the correct restaurant for lunch and refreshment. The drive at times was a little hairy and

frustrating due to the very twisty and not well-marked rural roads (two turnarounds and no GPS). Gotta remember to bring our Garmins next time! Overall the 107 mile day drive was fun; the scenery beautiful; the Allantés performed flawlessly; and our friends stayed in good spirits. But no more curves until the next cruise!!! As an end to our Fall Cruise, we enjoyed a delicious dinner with some folks using the “tipsy taxi” for their driver. It was a spectacular weekend filled with gorgeous fall colors, breathtaking scenery, great friends and Allante’s. Our event schedule for 2017 includes more fun-packed Allanté cruises: participating in the Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Atlanta Motorama (the BIG Caddys will join us again) in April, a day cruise to the National Prisoner of War Museum (honoring all our veterans) in May, the Cadillac LaSalle National Meet in Washington, DC in August, possible hosting of the National Cadillac Allanté/ XLR Meet in Savannah, GA in October and Christmas at Stone Mountain in early December 2017. The invitation to our events and others still stands. Any Allanté, XLR, Cadillac owner is always welcome to join our cruises, our fun and our fellowship. For the remainder of 2016, our next cruise is in December to Johnson City, TN and the Speedway in Lights at Bristol Motor Speedway. We will be staying at the phenomenal Carnegie Hotel in Johnson City enjoying the luxury and the beauty of The Carnegie. Like to join us? Email Paula at vopelakp@bellsouth.net or call 404-788-6121 after November 14. Enjoy your Allanté and XLR! They are great driving vehicles meant for exciting roads, beautiful backdrops and meeting new friends. INSIDER VOL 4 • 2016
