Nature’s Masterpiece Nature pulled out all the stops when it created the confluence of the Illinois, Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. And area naturalists agree.
Put down your phones. Park the car. Slow down and breathe. There’s no better place to connect with nature than the Meeting of the Great Rivers.
“Lately it seems that people forget about all the natural beauty that is out here with all the hustle and bustle of daily living,” said Amy Curry, Director of Outreach for The Nature Institute in Godfrey. High atop the limestone bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River, The Nature Institute offers miles of trails, natural spring-fed waterfalls, naturalist programming and some of the best views in the region. “Our brains have been trained to care about our phones and other ways to fill our time,” Amy notes. “The beauty we have in the region makes you focus. It’s almost therapeutic and blocks out anything else.” Nature is also on display at the Audubon Center at Riverlands in West Alton. The 10,000 acres of protected land sits directly on the Mississippi River and is home to over 40 percent of the migrating bird populations in the United States. Visitors can spy eagles perched high in the trees with the center’s in-house spotting scopes. Or simply walk to the edge of the waterways to see herons, egrets and Trumpeter Swans gliding along the waters. Near the confluence of the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers, Pere Marquette State Park offers visitors stunning views of the Illinois River. A short ferry ride across the Illinois River, visitors can indulge in the natural wonders of the Two Rivers National Wildlife Refuge. This area is a mosaic of wetlands, open water, bottomland forests and prairies.

Come Out &
Play! What’s
your
pleasure? Rock climbing, zip lining, hiking, golf, canoeing, horseback riding? The list of outdoor adventures in the Meeting of the Great Rivers is simply the greatest and second to none. 6 | Alton Regional Convention & Visitors Bureau
“When people want to get away and travel they search for things to do,” said Jim Scroggins, course manager for Grafton Zipline Adventures, a nine mile course located in the canopy of trees above the confluence of the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. “When people come to the zip line, they are like, ‘Holy Cow – we didn’t know this kind of stuff was here’. Once they are here, they want to see what else the area has to offer.” From the zip line course to rock climbing the limestone bluffs at Pere Marquette State Park, to hiking and biking trails along the banks of the Mississippi River to teeing up at quality golf courses including an Arnold Palmer designed facility, it’s hard to decide how to spend your time. For a relaxing, family friendly day of water fun, Raging Rivers Water Park is the place to be. Situated along the banks of the Mississippi River, the park offers 28 acres of fun including a wave pool, Endless River, Itty Bitty Surf City and more. The park is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day. If you are looking for a more strenuous adventure, then get out your rock climbing gear and head to Pere Marquette State Park. The state’s largest state park has also become Illinois’ newest rock climbing destination. The park offers highly featured limestone formations which are great for climbing. Twelve rock climbing routes are available from sport climbing which relies on permanent anchors fixed to the rock to top anchors for traditional leads. The park is the first Midwestern crag to be solely equipped with titanium fixed anchors according to the Mountain Project. With the Mississippi River in view, there are four major bike trails which crisscross the Meeting of the Great Rivers. From Hartford to Grafton, a total of 41 miles of trails edge along the river banks. The Missouri Audubon Society has endorsed the Great Rivers Bird and Bike Trail which runs from Hartford to Grafton along the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway. View migrating warblers, herons, egrets and hundreds of other bird species native to the region. The Meeting of the Great Rivers is home to seven challenging and dynamic golf courses. The Spencer T. Olin course is a 7,000 yard 18-hole championship course located in Alton’s Gordon Moore Park. The course was designed by Mr. Olin’s friend Arnold Palmer. Rolling Hills Golf Club in Godfrey, The Woodlands Golf Course in Alton, Belk Park Golf Course in Wood River, Rock Spring Golf Course, Cloverleaf Golf Course and Wolves Crossing in Jerseyville round out the friendly, open courses available in the region. Water recreation is at the top of many lists in the area. Boat rentals are available at Grafton Harbor while both Grafton Harbor and Alton Marina offer first class transient slips and long-term docking. River boat rides are also available on the Mississippi River and provide an incomparable view of the river bluffs and striking scenery which can only be seen by river. Grafton River Adventures offers weekend boating excursions on its 49-passenger Hakuna Matata spring, summer and fall. The Spirit of Peoria, an authentic paddlewheel river boat cruises in the Alton and Grafton region periodically through the summer and fall.

5 Things
You Won't Want to Miss
Ok, you are ready to begin your trip to the Meeting of the Great Rivers. But where do you start and more importantly, what should make your ‘Simply the Greatest’ must-see list? Don’t worry. We have you covered.
1
Here is a list of the five places you should visit:
Robert Wadlow Statue
Alton’s Gentle Giant grew to a whopping 8 feet 11.1 inches by the time he was 22 years old. Wadlow was born and raised in Alton and although he died in 1940 he remains an international celebrity. He is still considered the tallest man in the world to this day. A statue in his memory stands at 2810 College Avenue in Alton. See how you measure up to this giant among men. Trip tip: Visit the Alton Museum of History and Art across the street from the statue to see more memorabilia!
3
Lewis & Clark State Historic Site
Speaking of explorers, do you remember learning about Lewis & Clark in school? Well, the two intrepid explorers and their band of frontiersmen started their historic journey from a camp at the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. That camp has been recreated and is now the Lewis & Clark State Historic Site #1 on the epic Lewis & Clark Trail. The site features a museum with five exhibit rooms, a movie and a 55-foot full scale “cutaway” keelboat. Located at #1 Lewis and Clark Trail in Hartford.
4
National Great Rivers Museum
This river-themed museum sits at the foot of the Melvin Price Locks and Dam, the newest and largest lock on the upper Mississippi River. This free museum is open seven days a week and is dedicated to telling the story of the Mississippi River including its cultural significance and ecological importance. After touring the museum, take a tour on the lock wall, 80 feet above the Mississippi, and maybe you’ll catch a barge bringing its cargo through the lock gates! Located at #2 Locks and Dam Way, Alton.
piasa Bird More than 340 years ago, French explorers Pere Marquette and Louis Joliet discovered something amazing painted on the limestone bluffs near the confluence of the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. Members of the Illinois Indian tribe said it was a “Piasa” meaning a bird that devours men. The painting of this mythical creature is a local Alton landmark and currently lives on the limestone bluffs at Piasa Park along Route 100 just west of the city. Pronounced

Good wine leads to good beer in Grafton
Believe it or not, wine isn’t for everyone. That realization prompted Mike and Lori Nikonovich, the owners of Grafton Winery, to add a brewhaus to their highly successful and award winning winery in Grafton. “We were the first winery in Illinois to get a Beer Manufacturing License and at the time, it was very unusual for a winery to offer beer as an option to wine,” Mike Nikonovich said. ”But we wanted to have something to offer the people who don’t like wine. We wanted our own beer.” In August of 2009, the Grafton Brewhaus brewpub opened at the winery. Two tanks made up the newly formed craft brewery and dark wheat and pilsner beers were served. As the brewery caught on with customers at the winery, the choices of beers and number of tanks on site increased. There are now five tanks and the brewery is ready to expand to kegging its beers.

Regionally brewed craft beers have taken the area by storm. Now, local restaurants and bars are stocking a full line of them, like these local hangouts - just to name a few.

Two years ago when James Rogalsky and Lauren Pattan opened the doors of their new craft brewery in Alton, they weren’t sure what to expect. Old Bakery Beer Company, the region’s newest craft beer brewery, and its accompanying restaurant has since become a focal point in the regional craft beer landscape. Housed in the former Colonial Bakery Building, the phantom scents of baked bread mingle with the aroma of the restaurant and the brewing beer. And the beer, crafted by Rogalsky, has been embraced by the local community, the region, and visitors. “For us, it’s more than just being fulfilled running a restaurant and brewery,” Pattan explains. “It’s an opportunity to help build a community around it and to help the area. The most rewarding conversations we have had are when people say they moved to Alton because we have a craft brewery here.”

People Need to See the Views On a cold, cold day in February 1989 Ben Allen looked out of a window of a dilapidated building on Grafton’s riverfront and saw the future. “I came to Grafton and visited the old Boatworks building which had been converted to a mechanical shop. It was run down and in disrepair. I looked out one of the windows and saw the bluffs and the river and knew that people had to see that view too,” Allen remembers. That visit heralded the birth of The Loading Dock, a premier regional restaurant/bar and entertainment center perched on the edge of the Mississippi River in Grafton. “I wanted to create a place where people could come and see the view,” Allen said. “Everyone thought I was nuts.” The Loading Dock has evolved into an iconic attraction for Grafton and the region. With its round white tables and bright yellow café umbrellas lining the riverfront, it has become the go-to location for anyone who wants to sip a drink and munch on some dock salsa while watching the river flow by. For more about The Loading Dock and the Allens efforts to create destinations in the region, go to VisitAlton.com/LocalLegends.
A Recipe for Success Famous for her pies and half pound chicken salad sandwiches, Ann Badasch, the force behind My Just Desserts in historic downtown Alton, has developed a recipe for success. And that recipe isn’t just based on the five cases of chickens she and her staff cook and debone by hand on a weekly basis for her sandwiches. It’s also not the dozens of pies created by scratch daily in her kitchen. Or even her famous Tollhouse Brownies. It really started when she re-located her restaurant to the historic Ryder building at 31 E. Broadway in 1989. The building once was used by Abraham Lincoln for trial work, and offers a panoramic window view of the Mississippi River. With a chalkboard menu that changes daily and is based on family recipes for delectable sandwiches, soups and desserts, Badasch has created a warm, inviting atmosphere that men, women and children enjoy on a daily basis. “The food here is important,” Badasch says. “But what is more important is customer service. I want to greet everyone who walks in here and make sure they enjoy themselves. It’s the customer service that brings people back.” To learn more about Ann Badasch and her passion for the region go to VisitAlton.com/LocalLegends.

Creating an Authentic Alton Behind the region’s revitalized music scene and resurgence of Downtown Alton’s historic business district is the energy and passion of Matt and Sara McGibany. From vendors graduating from a weekend booth at the Alton Farmers’ & Artisans’ Market into brick and mortar storefronts to musicians flocking to the region to experiment with collaborative musical styles, the McGibanys have helped shape the tenor and tone of the area. “The culture of Alton is cooperative and collaborative,” Sara McGibany, the Executive Director of Alton Main Street, noted. “To create a destination, we all need to join forces and promote the wide variety of artistic ventures that are happening. We are all about linking people with others who share a similar vision for the area. Alton is becoming well known for having a broad spectrum of eclectic things to do.” The new artisan and entrepreneurial spirit which has emerged in the region is a shift from the Alton the McGibanys experienced growing up. The two left Alton as young adults but ended up returning 10 years ago. Reconnecting with their hometown also inspired the couple to help shape the community. For more about the McGibanys go to VisitAlton.com/LocalLegends.
Artists First A few blocks from the banks of the Mississippi River, Chad Nelson and Felicia Breen, owners of Mississippi Mud Pottery in Alton, have found their creative and business niche. Their handmade mugs, bowls, plates and platters are highly sought after by people throughout the region. And the ribbons and awards lining the walls of their shop are testament to their artistic talents. “Chad and I work really hard to develop and foster the Mississippi Mud tradition,” Breen pointed out during a short break. Mississippi Mud Pottery was purchased by artists Nelson and Breen 10 years ago when the previous owners Ken and Brenda Barnett retired and moved out of state. Mississippi Mud Pottery has been in operation for a total of 34 years. That hard work has also garnered them an “Illinois Made” designation awarded by the Illinois Office of Tourism honoring the people, and places that create, craft and invent in Illinois. “We wanted to continue the tradition of Mississippi Mud. And here we are 10 years later,” Breen said. “I think people respect our quality, craftsmanship and customer service.” Although the store carries the name Mississippi Mud, the clay used in creating the plates, bowls, mugs and other ceramics doesn’t actually come from the river. But the inspiration for their work does. “The one thing about living and having a store in Alton is every day when I come to work I see the river,” Felicia said. “And every day the river is different. Who would think that it could be a beautiful crystal blue one day, turgid the next, and flat as glass another? The river is always changing.” For more information about the artistry that exists in and around Alton, go to VisitAlton.com/LocalLegends.

Landmark Dining for 140+ years of tantalizing tastes
My Just Desserts
Imagine creamy Italian pasta dishes paired with garlic butter drenched pepperloin steaks. How about juicy secret recipe fried chicken and puffed pillows of toasted ravioli. With menus like that it’s no surprise that Castelli’s Restaurant at 255 and Tony’s Restaurant have become landmark restaurants in The Meeting of the Great Rivers. For more than 140 years, the two family-owned and operated businesses have served up delectable dining options. And they have kept it a family affair with the grandchildren of the original owners now keeping the legacies going.

Four Generations and Counting
Paul Ventimiglia grew up at Tony’s Restaurant, 312 Piasa St., in downtown Alton. He remembers as a child sitting under the bar eating maraschino cherries while his grandfather and founder of the landmark Italian restaurant served customers. Now, Paul along with his wife Erin, have taken over the reins of the 62-year-old business becoming the third generation to run the family-based restaurant. “This place feels to me like it’s my house. It’s part of my heart,” Paul said, sitting in the Third Street Café taking a break from stocking the restaurant. “I have loved Tony’s my whole life.” Tony Ventimiglia and his wife Edie opened Tony’s Restaurant on Piasa Street in Alton in 1954. Dubbed the original “Pasta House,” the restaurant established a robust menu of pastas and its signature, secret recipe Pepperloin steak which has remained unchanged over the years. The addition of the Third Street Café in 1994, added a second bar and pizza-style sideline to the thriving business. Paul and Erin have also added a whiskey bar to the café area which boasts 30 beers on tap. Tuesday and Wednesdays will feature pizza specials and Thursday and Sundays there will be Pepperloin Kabob specials. They also plan to start a Sunday night pasta special which will include pasta, salad, wine and dessert for an all inclusive price.
Eighty years ago, Alfonso and Teresa Castelli opened the doors to Castelli’s Restaurant. Their restaurant quickly became known as a local landmark thanks, in part, to their secret recipe fried chicken. Over the years, the recipe has become trademarked and draws diners from throughout the region. Other homemade specialties, such as the homemade “Roman” house salad dressing and toasted ravioli have also become diner favorites. But it’s the family atmosphere that the original Castelli’s created in the restaurant and which flows through the restaurant today that keeps people coming back, according to Matt Castelli, the greatgrandson of Alfonso and Teresa. “We have customers who find their way here from out of state and they make a point of returning,” Castelli said. “It’s important to keep the traditions of the restaurant going strong."

It was one of the greatest adventures in American History...
...the exploration of the uncharted and unknown upper Midwest and western United States in search of a water route to the Pacific Ocean. And it began right here where the Missouri River meets the Mississippi.
