The olden days were marked by a simpler time and more relaxing pace. Encounter Abraham Lincoln in a heated debate at a time when the nation was on the brink of the Civil War. Pay a visit to Elijah Lovejoy and listen closely as he gives his life for liberty while defending his printing press from angry mobs. Witness Lewis & Clark and the men of the Corps of Discovery preparing for their trek across the spacious western plains of the Louisiana Purchase. LINCOLN’s time in alton Early in his career, the Lincolns visited Alton often to call on their friends Senator Lyman Trumbull and his wife Julia Jayne. Lincoln and Trumbull served in the Legislature together in 1840. Julia and Mary Todd were attendants in each others weddings. In 1854, in a three-way senate race between Lincoln, Shields and Trumbull, Lincoln withdrew from the race and gave his votes to Trumbull, securing his election. Their friendship was cemented, but Mary Todd would never speak to Julia Jayne again.

Facing an Election, Facing a Country in Turmoil On the morning of October 15, 1858, Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas pulled into the port of Alton on a steamboat. As cordial companions, they shared breakfast and parted ways to prepare for the last of the famous Lincoln-Douglas Debates.
Lincoln traveled across the state to serve his clients.
Lincoln’s first visits to Alton can be traced back to the early 1840s. As a young lawyer, he met with clients and practiced law. It is documented that Lincoln made several appearances at the Ryder Building in Downtown Alton, which served as a courthouse.
McPike Mansion Haunted Tours (618) 462-3348 McPikeMansion.com
Lincoln and Douglas were facing more than an election for the Senate in 1858; they were facing a country in turmoil. Even though nearly 20 years had passed since Elijah P. Lovejoy, publisher of the Alton Observer, was murdered by an angry mob because of his anti-slavery writings, the inflammatory issue of slavery was still bubbling to the surface throughout the nation. Residents of Alton, in the free state of Illinois, and those from the neighboring slave state of Missouri reflected the strong feelings of the entire country as related to the concerns of slavery.
One of Lincoln’s lesser-known ventures to Alton was in 1842 for a duel with Illinois State Auditor James Shields. Following a series of letters written by Lincoln, as “Rebecca, criticizing Shields, Lincoln was challenged to a duel. He chose to meet Shields at a small island across the river from Alton as the location for the exchange.

Stephen Douglas, first elected in 1847, was the Democratic incumbent senator. Douglas was a proponent of popular sovereignty, believing that each state should be able to decide for itself whether or not to permit slavery.
travel er's t o o l s
In 1854, Douglas was responsible for overturning the Missouri Compromise of 1820 with the introduction of the Kansas-Nebraska Act. The Missouri Compromise had been negotiated to maintain a balance of free and slave states. The compromise established a dividing line between slave and free territories, prohibiting slavery north of the parallel 36°30’ north. The Kansas-Nebraska Act opened the northern territories to slavery.
Leading up to the debates, Lincoln was a leader in the Whig party, but he was not well known. As he began his campaign, he argued in his House Divided speech that Douglas was part of a conspiracy to nationalize slavery by ending the Missouri Compromise. He believed that Douglas’ support of popular sovereignty would nationalize and perpetuate slavery. The debates were remembered for the eloquence exhibited by both orators. Douglas went on to win the election of 1858. The wide-spread coverage of the debates gained Lincoln national exposure and led to his nomination as the Republican candidate for president in 1860. In addition to Lincoln, the country was presented with a slate of three other candidates for the 1860 presidential election. Douglas was chosen as the Democratic candidate. The National Democrats, also known as the Southern-Democrats, chose John Breckenridge, and John Bell was nominated by the newly formed Constitutional Union party. Lincoln was elected president with 40% of the popular vote and 59% of the electoral vote. He was not even on the ballot in the Deep South.
Ripples of the War Reach Alton By the time Lincoln was inaugurated on March 4, 1861, seven states had seceded from the Union. Lincoln was in office less than 40 days when the Civil War erupted as Fort Sumpter was fired upon by the Confederates. By February 1862, Alton felt the rippling effect of the war as the first Confederate soldiers were brought to the city by steamboat and imprisoned at the Federal Military Prison. By the end of the war, 1,354 Confederate soldiers, 215 civilians and 240 Unions perished at the prison. Many were laid to rest in Alton’s Confederate Cemetery and across the Mississippi River at Small Pox Island. Today, the legacy of the Civil War can still be experienced in Alton as visitors stand among the remains of the Alton Prison, pay respect to fallen soldiers at the Confederate and National Cemeteries and look out on the river from Small Pox Island.
